O.J. Simpson, Winner of Heisman Trophy and Also Winner of the Richard Speck Knife-Spree Prize, Dies at Age 76

He is finally going to prison. The eternal kind.

O.J. Simpson, the former football great who was accused of and ultimately acquitted of the brutal 1994 slayings of his ex-wife and her friend, has died, according to his family. He was 76.

"On April 10th, our father, Orenthal James Simpson, succumbed to his battle with cancer. He was surrounded by his children and grandchildren. During this time of transition, his family asks that you please respect their wishes for privacy and grace," a statement from his family said.

In May 2023, Simpson posted a video on X, then known as Twitter, revealing that he had recently "caught cancer" and "had to do the whole chemo thing." He added, "It looks like I beat it."

The family of the man Simpson murdered, Ron Goldman, issued a statement: "he died without penance."

And he died without paying the $33 million he was found liable for in the Ron Goldman wrongful death civil suit. OJ refused to pay that judgement, and attempted to hide income. Over the decades, that judgment has grown to $70 million due to interest.

How much did OJ pay? Around $132,000. Little of it willingly.

My understanding is that almost all his funds were from his NFL Pension, and various annuities.

Those can't be touched by the courts.

The pension goes away, nothing to attach there. The annuities may or may not dissolve, depends on who he named as beneficiaries ... or if he annuitized them, and on what schedule.

125 I'll note that OJ met the Kardashian guy through his wife, mother of the current Kardashian plague. They were close friends, enough that he sang in her birthday music video. There had always been rumors that Khloe was his kid...

The only REAL mystery to the OJ case has been that two of Goldman's co-workers mysteriously disappeared shortly after the murders. No solution to THAT has ever been found.

At any rate, cancer is a terrible way to go, especially for an athlete. So I think we can rest assured that God's justice has finally arrived in force.

He was acquitted of carving up two people with a knife, which he obviously did, because they were white, he was black, and the jury was black.

The blithering incompetence of LAPD and the DA didn't help, but: it's obvious that jury never would have convicted him. The scabrous ignorant lowlifes slept through part of the evidence anyway. What does evidence matter anyway when they're too dumb to understand it and had decided on "not guilty" before they were empaneled.

"The prosecution was botched" is the "we need better candidates" of the criminal-justice system.

I hate to be the guy who's always banging on about race and tribalism of late, but a lot of white people simply cannot process that other demographics (as a whole, in general) are much more tribal in outlook. They see race and ethnicity in a way most whites were deprogrammed to not see it during the now-past colorblindness era. Chapelle had a great admission of this (if inadvertent) during one of his recent shows, when he acknowledged he knew Jussie Smollet was full of shit from the beginning but said nothing because he was black.

________

Among other things, the prosecution wanted -- and got -- black women on the jury, contrary to what most experienced and smart jury consultants advised. The sole motivation for that was because the prosecution thought black women would despise OJ because he married a white woman. The truth of course is that black women (at least at the time) will rally around black men almost no matter what, and especially if they think he's being racially targeted. I recall the defense team later said they were thrilled with all the black women on the jury.

If a population in the United States are going to determine cases based on anything other than the facts of the case and the written letter of the law, then there is an obligation to make sure that the population is not part of the jury.

Instead, he lied to the prosecution and pled the 5th, so no one was convicted of the murders and 2 familes have no closure for their loved ones.

Do feel sorry for the two younger children from his marriage to Nicole Brown Simpson. Theirs has not been an easy world, losing their mom in murder and suspecting their father.

Quick perusal, I see his rookie card is selling graded copies from about $30 to $200. The highest priced card I'm seeing is graded as an 8 (out of 10), and since I don't buy graded cards, I'm sure it could be found on Ebay somewhere below $30.

That's the thing, these cards are wildly varied in price, as the super collectors all want high graded cards.

Most expensive Topps baseball cards out there are Mantle '52s, and last I heard no one had any Grade 10 cards. Grade 9's were selling over $100K, but if you found an ungraded card, in decent enough condition (some wear and tear, but not too bad) you could probably find one for a grand or less.

271 I never really followed the case, but my understanding is that the cops actually did frame him, and it was apparent at the trial. Something to do with them planting the glove.

All in all, I supported the jury nullification as a way to tell the "system" that if they aren't going to play fair, then we would rather have murderers set free. To me, (a) OJ did do it, and (b) the jury nullification was a good thing for society.
(Better to let him go free than the gang bangers and cartel thugs we currently set free.)

They also turned it into a circus. And when you turn a court into a circus, people are going to think the guys in charge are clowns.

274 The biggest mistake the prosecution made was not having the case tried in Brentwood. Those are much different peers and I doubt would have gone along with the "black power" thing. At least in the mid 90's.

Supposedly it was because the DA at the time thought it would make a bigger splash to not do it there and was running for higher office, so he tried it in Los Angeles County. Where poor black people live and would make up a jury.

351 274 The biggest mistake the prosecution made was not having the case tried in Brentwood.

Theres no court house in brentwood The closest venue would have been santa Monica but Garcetti thought the case was such a slam dunk it would be an easy win, even with a downtown LA jury Big dummy!!

356 I know where I was when the verdict came out. I was at the TNRCC headquarters in Austin, Tx in a small crowd in one of the conference rooms watching. While we waited I organized a $1 betting pool on guilt or innocence.

I was probably the only non-state employee and the acquiters out numbered the guilties by at least 3:1

TNRCC was the Texas Natural Resources Conservation Committee or something like that...Regulators.

Fair enough.
Why?

Posted by: Montec at April 11, 2024 01:48 PM (Y6Wgg)
______________

Lotsa reasons but mostly:

1. Prosecution rushed to trial before they were ready and before all physical evidence was collected.

2. The glove. They relied heavily on it, and it blew up in their faces when it didn’t really fit OJ. Didn't they confirm ahead of time that it fit?

3. They built much of the case around Fuhrman. Dude was icky. Ditto the decision to push obvious bullshit as to why the officers went over the fence.

4. OJ’s blood was found at certain incriminating locations, but prosecution did a poor job explaining it. Prosecution also had no answer for a reasonable belief that OJ would have been covered in Nicole and blood, but tests showed no such thing.

5. Prosecution wobbled on motive. In a purely circumstantial case like this, you need absolutely iron-clad motive.

360 Marc Lamont Hill
@marclamonthill

O.J. Simpson was an abusive liar who abandoned his community long before he killed two people in cold blood. His acquittal for murder was the correct and necessary result of a racist criminal legal system. But he’s still a monster, not a martyr.

My take on it was pretty similar - Blacks who supported OJ for tribal reasons were wasting that protest on someone who demonstrably aren't supportive of the tribe. Which shows the foolishness of tribal thinking.

I mean, this is one of the rare times that the phrase "better 10 guilty go free,...." is relevant.

The system was corrupt. There is a direct line from "testilying" and "juicing the evidence" to where we are today where they brag about going after political enemies.

There are a lot of reasons to want to put guilty people in prison and do whatever it takes, but this was not about protecting the public from OJ, but about protecting the public from the criminal justice industry.

They let/made him wear a latex glove under the elastic glove of his. That and OJ spreading his fingers made it easy to look like it didn't fit. They should have used a different way of showing the fitting, since relying on his cooperation was dangerous.

Simpson had more than ample opportunity to own up to his heinous decisions-into-murder-fulfilled. Nothing sums it up better than the Goldmans' quote: "he died without penance".

To put it in as mild and as Christian way as possible: Simpson's prospects for salvation seem very low.
