Planet Fitness Founder and Former CEO Says the Trans Gym is "Basically Destroyed" by Boycotts

The Bud Light Effect .

Planet Fitness Inc. Founder and CEO Mike Grondahl detailed a history of rampant abuse at the company and alleged it misrepresented its financials during a recent interview with controversial right-wing X user Libs of TikTok.

This comes after weeks of calls for boycotts of the brand after the company canceled the membership of a Planet Fitness gym goer after speaking out about a biological male in the women's locker room.

Planet Fitness's policy allows gym members to use the locker room associated with their gender identity. But this policy has led to a few high-profile cases of women feeling uncomfortable in Planet Fitness women's locker rooms, and some women and children have reported abuse and sexual harassment at the facilities. Many of these incidents resulted in the women losing their membership, but an arrest was made in at least one instance, as previously reported by Benzinga.

In the 15-minute interview, Grondahl outlined the history of the company and the reason behind its founding. Grondahl started the gym, noting the Judgement Free Zone was meant to be a welcoming signal to novice gymgoers looking for a place to start. But when speaking about the company today, Grondahl says it's "devastating" what it's become.

"Planet Fitness was like another child for me. And I put my heart and soul into building that company and it's been pretty much destroyed in, ya know, it's lost all respect within the country within the last couple weeks," he said. "There's no common sense standing behind this."

Grondahl told Libs of TikTok he didn't approve of the policies or the response to them in recent weeks. Grondahl sold the company to private equity in November 2012 and lost control. Following the sale, he remained CEO until he was ousted after he reported that the chief administrative officer (CAO) and general counsel hired by the private equity firm had been found guilty of multiple charges over several years and abused minors on several occasions. In two instances, he was a teacher and was found guilty of abusing his students. The CAO left Planet Fitness in 2017.

"When we went public, the majority of the board knew that this lead attorney was a pedophile. It's in the culture." Grondahl said during the TikTok interview.

The Planet Fitness "culture" includes accusations of widespread abuse at the company.

"It started at the corporate office, this attorney started abusing employees, then he's abusing them sexually, now the culture leads into the people doing the right thing are being thrown out of Planet Fitness," Grondahl said.

The model was based on a huge customer pool of people who don't come to the gym very often. However, since it's only $10 month, they don't cancel because psychologically, they have a gym membership. In practice, Planet Fitness is a no-frills workout place. It was a great model. Emphasis on past-tense.

Their entire business model is that you pay such a small amount that you don't quit, but also you don't go to the gym.

It like a subscription to TELL people you belong to a gym but never actually go and if everyone who had a membership actually used it, the gyms would be overwhelmed.

You'd think a business model that basically requires people to forget they have a membership would do EVERYTHING to not be noticed.

The institutional equivalent of Gresham's Law. It's how we got here.

Gresham's Law is about fiat currency eliminating strong money very quickly when it's introduced. The law is "bad money chases out good."

Well, the same applies to institutions. "Bad people chase out good." You can survive a rotter on the production line or pushing paper through the mail room. It's much harder to survive a rotter in the C-suite, because he can - and will - replace other high-ranking people with rotters like him and eliminate non-rotters who might object to him.

37 Covering up the cause of cancellations is a different matter. If they really are doing this, and it's a corporate-wide directive rather than the owner(s) of a few franchises (I assume Planet Fitness has a franchise model), then they are potentially engaging in fraudulent financial reporting.

You don't have to be a publicly traded company to get into major trouble for falsifying financial statements.

That would be true of most gyms in America. They are crowded beyond belief around the New Year as folks who've decided "this is the year" hit it hard and wrong.
After a few weeks of ever increasing pain and sometimes injury, it tapers back to the usual regulars.

Planet fitness has an entry level price that is truly low, but IIRC that is just for that site. The next level up gets you access to nationwide sites, and then you can have towel access, yada yada.
Most people spring for something other than the base membership.

If the membership is actually used, probably.

But most memberships are not used. Gym membership sales soar at New Year's time, as people get ready to pursue resolutions. Then it doesn't last very long, but the membership fees keep rolling in for a goodly while, sometimes for years. Tons of people paying that $10/month rarely or never step through the doors. You don't need to build capacity for them and they cost you almost nothing in terms of processing.

"I pay, but I don't go" is the population that makes the gym chains profitable.

A gym that banned phones, cameras and video equipment would probably find a market for itself. A full ban would be detrimental - the phone and the walkman converged back in 2008 - but a "if you bring it in here, it stays in your pocket unless you're changing songs and if it comes out you get a warning and if it comes out again, you're banned" policy or something like that would probably be something many people would welcome.

If you're not already fit, going to the gym is humiliating enough when you're the guy bench-pressing an empty bar or the fat lady on an elliptical. Who wants to run the risk of being made social media famous when you wind up in the background of some gym THOT or rude dudebro's "fitness influencer" stream and pilloried by the "content creator" and his or her audience?

"In every position I have held, from junior associate to Senior Advisor, there have been opportunities to challenge the forces that seek to silence women and those most vulnerable in society. In those board rooms, in the tight knit working group, in the advocacy and activist spaces and in grand bureaucracies, there are mechanisms and cultures which dispute the humanity and ability of people like me to be trusted to lead. This happens, not because we are unprepared or unwilling, but because the rules created in our organizations and baked into their very foundations, are often riddled with racism, patriarchy and exclusion. These are chinks in the armor of traditional leadership that refuse to reconcile with a colonizing past, or recognize that time has run out for experimentation and tweaking of a failed historic model."

Also, the value of the company is basically flat over the last five years. If the company is destroyed it hasn't hit the bottom line yet.

However, they would seem vulnerable to a boycott by getting the payers who aren't using the facilities to cancel.

Planet Fitness needs the Boy Scouts treatment - sued into oblivion.

Posted by: Anna Puma at April 10, 2024 12:20 PM

The trial lawyers conspired with the Boy Scouts of America and a host of state legislators to go "bankrupt" while retaining 80% of their assets. The assumption was that about 10,000 former scouts would join the suit and they'd receive about $300,000 a piece - which is kind of middling to low for sexual abuse cases.

Instead, nearly 90,000 scouts reported abuse of a sexual nature. You can easily do the math on what kind of settlement they'll end up getting. Meanwhile the trial lawyers don't GAF because they get 1/3rd of the pie no matter what. The judge handling the case is a female and I hope she asks the BSA, "Compared to female cases of sexual abuse isn't $35,000 per scout remarkable low?"

But the fix is in I'm certain.

The NAIA states that besides cheer and dance, every other sport “includes some combination of strength, speed and stamina, providing competitive advantages for male student-athletes.” But numerous scientists and activists contend that trans women — who were assigned male at birth — do not have an inherent advantage over cisgender women.

Civil rights activists were enraged by the move. “It is a shocking and devastating development that the NAIA, an organization that has done so much to open doors, is now slamming those doors shut on transgender athletes, based on ignorance, prejudice, and ginned-up public hysteria. Research has amply demonstrated the many benefits for students that flow from participation in school sports..."

Often the same people who claim their pills make it impossible to lose weight based solely on some fine print in the label, without ever having tried any serious, sustained calorie reduction.

Most people can lose weight if they try. Admittedly, it is less fun than eating whatever you want. But simple calorie reduction will work for most, without a bunch of other dietary voodoo and gimmickry. But admitting that would require people to acknowledge they're making bad choices and reaping the consequences.

232 Just eating less will not be effective because your metabolism will slow down in response.

One must also increase caloric output through increased exercise.

Now denying them the 'right' to do so is 'literal' genocide

235 Often the same people who claim their pills make it impossible to lose weight based solely on some fine print in the label, without ever having tried any serious, sustained calorie reduction.

Most people can lose weight if they try. Admittedly, it is less fun than eating whatever you want. But simple calorie reduction will work for most, without a bunch of other dietary voodoo and gimmickry. But admitting that would require people to acknowledge they're making bad choices and reaping the consequences.
Posted by: Personal Responsibility? No Thanks

Frankly, a lot of it is both eating habits, and the foods that you choose to eat.
High carbohydrate diets tend to put on a lot of weight. And of course, the modern crisis
1) High fructose corn syrup as a sweetener
2) seed oils; canola, etc

My wife and I were looking at an article that had people on the beach in the 1970's versus people on the beach today.
Nobody was fat in the 1970's, and just about everyone is overweight (some by a LOT) today.
It's more than just "eating". The government and big agribusiness are literally trying to poison us all. The FDA will approve about anything in food.

Free with my healthcare plan. But they get charged only $2.00 every time I visit. Which is a good deal for the healthcare provider as I usually only go in the winter months.

After they've broken up they're determined to get back in shape. She goes there and is surrounded by male instructors that are in shape. These women are ripe for the plucking and a-holes take advantage of it. This is what has given CrossFit a reputation. Its happened a lot. It's too bad because it is a great way to stay in shape.

260 Biden's new State Department diversity chief labelled America as "failed historic model" with "colonizing past." Come read her word salad.

It is, however, apparently permissible for her to dispute the humanity and ability of people she doesn't like.

Compare some of the same "labeled" food products sold in Europe and sold in the US. The US food products have a whole host of additional ingredients; preservatives, color agents , etc., that are not present in the same-name products sold in Europe or the UK.
Why is that?
A clue is a lot of these things are not healthy, but the FDA permits these things because....they are paid off.
Eating healthy can be hard, because you really have to peruse the labels of a lot of things sold in the supermarket. HFCS, seed oils, toxic preservatives. And be careful of what kind of meat you buy. Especially chicken, as a lot of chicken producers load up their livestock with antibiotics and steroids, and other things to keep them healthy and fattening prior to slaughter.

Also, modern day Republicans (well, the voters at least) seem to have real problems with Wilson's vision of an all-powerful administrative state which is odd if the GOP is descended from Wilson's party of the 1910s.

An eclipse that's a once-in-a-lifetime "event"? I've worked at the county level. If my county could turn out a 2 to 1 election vote count for my party, I'd be ecstatic.
