Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Woke Hollywood In a Panic As All Signs Point to a "Full-Scale Depression" in the IndustryFrom January: More and more customers are cancelling their streaming services. And Hollywood bet everything on streaming services.Customers canceled their streaming subscriptions at a higher clip than last year as services like Disney+, Netflix and Hulu jacked up their prices, according to a report. Defections across premium streamers rose 6.3% in November from 5.1% a year earlier, the Wall Street Journal reported Tuesday. Over the past two years, roughly 25% of those who subscribed to AppleTV+, Amazon's PrimeVideo, Max, Peacock, Paramount+, Nettflix, Hulu and Disney+ have canceled at least three of those options -- an increase from 15% before hikes pushed the combined tab of the ad-free monthly costs for those eight streamers to $112.42 a month, the outlet said, citing November data from analytics firm Atenna. In late March, Variety reported that few people are watching the new shows that streaming services are making. They're mostly re-watching old shows, back before the Culture-Killer known as "wokeness" infected Hollywood. Data revealed by Variety in March confirmed that, other than the top 20 shows, pretty much no one is watching any of that woke crap on America's lousy streaming services. "As series output soared to historic heights in 2022, with nearly 1,000 original titles released on the major [streaming] platforms," the useless, far-left Variety reported without ever explaining why "viewership on most services was concentrated among fewer than two dozen shows." "Data ... shows the top 20 most-watched TV seasons" on every streaming service other than Netflix "accounted for the vast majority of original series viewership on almost all of the major U.S.-based [streaming] platforms in 2022." ... Disney+ "released 50 original series in 2022 (not counting kids' content)," and the ten most popular "seasons captured nearly 80% of original series viewing time; the next 10, just over 16%." Disney seasons that were not in the top 20 "accounted for only about 5% of viewing time." Other than Peacock's three percent, that is the worst of all the major streamers. The following is by far the most important revelation... The all-important rewatchable factor:This data also indicates that most streaming originals do not have the rewatch value offered by many older series. Whereas beloved library shows such as "Grey's Anatomy" reliably chart among the most-watched titles on streaming week after week, year after year, new originals are hard-pressed to keep viewers coming back. Looking again at Disney+, only two of the top 10 original seasons in 2022 reappeared among the top 10 the next year: "The Mandalorian" Season 2 and limited series "Andor," both "Star Wars" properties. (The former actually saw its share of viewing time rise year over year, likely bolstered by the third season's premiere.) Deadline from March 18: Industry heading for a "major contraction," some call it a "full-scale depression." LinkedIn is usually used by professionals for networking with people in their field, posting updates when they get a new job or congratulating friends on their promotions. These days, as one former industry type put it, "it's become a therapy site for unemployed entertainment executives" who share their frustrations over the lack of opportunities in Hollywood amid a major contraction. "I've seen lots of downturns, lots of job losses but I've never seen anything like this," one veteran top TV executive said. "This is a full-scale depression for the entertainment industry." Over the past year, there have been waves of layoffs at Disney, Warner Bros Discovery, Paramount, NBCUniversal, Amazon MGM Studios, Lionsgate (which acquired eOne), Netflix, Sony, Fifth Season and most talent agencies including CAA and UTA. The dire situation, "bordering on worst-case scenario," the seasoned TV executive said, was created by a perfect storm of Covid, strikes and "poor management decisions coming home to roost" driven by short-sighted moves by media companies aimed at goosing their quarterly reports to appease Wall Street. ... "I have certainly an influx of executives that reach out and say, they're looking for their next [job]," said top Hollywood executive recruiter Jamie Waldron, Senior Partner, Global Head of Sports, Media + Entertainment, at Modern Executive Solutions. His "conservative estimate" is that "a good 20%" of the VP-and-above executive workforce in media and entertainment is out of work from a year ago. That would qualify as a "depression" in the industry. At the height of the actual depression, 25% of able-bodied men were unemployed. ...Hollywood will be cutting the number of scripted shows it makes by 25% over the next few years. That means, of course, about a 25% loss in jobs. FX topper John Landgraf in February declared Peak TV over as the number of original English-language scripted series fell 12% to 516 from the all-time high of 600 in 2022; he projected a further slide to 400-450 series within the next few years. The year 2022 was pivotal, with the industry shifting gears to kick off the current contraction. ... There is an asterisk with that projection: potential mergers. As rumors continue to swirl about Paramount's future as a stand-alone company, there may be more media consolidation in the next year or so, with Warner Bros Discovery also a target of merger speculation. Speaking of Paramount: Paramount is at risk of bankruptcy as their bonds take on "junk" status. (Junk bonds are bonds which are judged to have a low likelihood of actual repayment.) And experts are already forecasting that 2024 will be bust. After a disastrous 2023 at the global box office, Hollywood's 2024 is already predicted to be even worse. "Gower Street Analytics has revised its 2024 Global box office projection to $32.3 billion," reads the press release. This is a little better than the original prediction of $31.5 billion, but still "down about 3% from the $39.9 billion grossed in 2023 based on current exchange rates." Here's the key figure: "It would also be 18% lower than the average of the global box office totals between 2017-19." Even with population and ticket price increases over the last five to seven years, the movie business is looking at nearly a 20 percent drop. Wow. Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1
I just can't stand all this good news.

From January: More and more customers are cancelling their streaming services.
And Hollywood bet everything on streaming services. ======== It was always a false prize. The entire model was based on continuous growth. They essentially wanted a return to vertical integration that the studios had before the Paramount Accords. It doesn't work in streaming. Our only streaming service is Amazon Prime and it's getting worse by the day.* I'm not surprised all the other mainstream streaming services are failing.
I think the SmartTVs also are killing the streaming services. My Samsung TV has a cable-like service for free on it with some very good stations on it. *Ok, we also have Curiosity Stream which seems to be improving by the day, but is only documentaries. ========= Disney+'s biggest hit has easily been Bluey, a show they license from Australian television. Not the multi-billion dollar investment they've put into the content. Also, that multi-billion dollar investment doesn't matter when it doesn't draw NEW subscribers. Wish getting 14 million views in its first 5 days doesn't mean anything if it didn't increase the subscriber base. The problem is also not a lack of brand titles or a lack of franchises. The problem is that Hollywood's woke crusade has obliterated its customer base. The problem is that Normal People know movies aren't very good anymore. The problem is a lack of appealing movie stars. The problems is that what had once been two hours of escapism is now 2.5 hours of lectures, insults, hectoring, and gay sex.
======== The funniest bit is the other analysts who blame the strikes. The writer and actor strikes affected films that should be appearing in late 2024, at the earliest, but they've been trying to blame the strikes on soft early 2024 box office. The basic premise of a business is to deliver what your customer wants.
If you deliver something that your customer doesn't want, you must convince the customer (e.g., deploy the salesmen) or die. If you fail to convince the customer, you die. Blaming the customer for not liking your product is a poor sales strategy. If you do that, you will die. Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at April 10, 2024 04:27 PM (HnUIn) 36

Whereas beloved library shows such as "Grey's Anatomy" reliably chart among the most-watched titles on streaming week after week, year after year, new originals are hard-pressed to keep viewers coming back.
++++ They tend to be big story arc series, more like a mini-series than an old-fashioned series. Proper serials like sitcoms and primetime dramas are "rewatchable" because they're *also* forgettable and each episode is usually independent. You can jump in and out. People watch them for the characters and each story is a little self-contained thing. It can feel "fresh" a second time with just a bit of time elapsing. Big arc stories are more memorable and once you know how it winds up, there's little point in rewatching. The big arc-based shows are also rewatchable, but the delay between viewings is much, much longer and you're likely to remember how it ended anyway and will skip around. And that is the best case, when the big arc-driven mini-series is *good.* If it sucks, the "rewatch factor" is zero. There are plenty of sites to find things for free, and if those dry up, well, then that's that. The only thing I'd ever consider paying for MIGHT be TCM, but only if it was stand-alone.

The dire situation, "bordering on worst-case scenario," the seasoned TV executive said, was created by a perfect storm of Covid, strikes and "poor management decisions coming home to roost" driven by short-sighted moves by media companies aimed at goosing their quarterly reports to appease Wall Street.
++++ This is "cope," as the kids say. Quarterly earnings are probably not a factor, and neither was COVID. COVID should have seen an entertainment and sports boom because there was nothing else to do, but the audience/audience hours didn't skyrocket as they should have. Hollywood has wrecked its own market. It has steadfastly refused to provide what the customer wants, and then harangued the customers for not liking the "right" things like they were told to. This is on management and the erosion - at the management's direction, or at least on its watch - of creative quality and market responsiveness. The funniest bit is the other analysts who blame the strikes. The writer and actor strikes affected films that should be appearing in late 2024, at the earliest, but they've been trying to blame the strikes on soft early 2024 box office.
Perhaps a side effect of the strikes was a significant number of would-be customers saying "FU, you privileged candy asses" and not going to movies that they otherwise might have. Posted by: Oddbob at April 10, 2024 04:35 PM (/y8xj) 99

I should mention that China always had an effective film industry.
I remember in CA in the 90s a lot of Asians (Korean and VN) that I knew watched Chinese historical movies on DVD. So China was pumping out these dramas that appealed massively to young asian women, even nationals that really hated China, and the shows were so popular back home that they sent them to expats in USA. I was impressed. I assume they were pure propaganda, but effective. One VN boat-girl (ie, her parents escaped VN on boat when the reds took over) I knew admired China. In the 90s. Like the cable and OTA newz stations, entertainment is going to be mostly, if not entirely AI in the next couple years. Some of the newz or entertainment giants are already hemorrhaging money, and their "talent" (such that it is) is a huge drain.
The C-Suites will want to remain, shareholders will demand a ROI so that money drain is going to be addressed in whatever way safeguards the company's value and bottom line. People are expendable. Money, not so much. Posted by: Martini Farmer at April 10, 2024 05:03 PM (Q4IgG) 313

It is surely a *lot* of factors. Feminism is a part of it, but I suspect - but, of course, do not know - that the Oriental approach to breakneck speed, ultra-high-density urbanization and associated residential design was hugely detrimental to birth rates. If you're only *ever* going to be able to afford ~800 sq. ft. of living space and you have no outdoor space that's yours, you're not going to have many kids even if you can find a wife. I've always said that there is only so much money a family can pay for entertainment in a month and given the evasion of subscriptions even NetFlix was over that limit. To collect the most a service would need to easily have access to many forms possibly from other companies so a way for a subscriber on one service to get something from another would work out best.
Instead every company is trying to fund an overbloated centrally organized media production company on this income stream. This won't work, even if the product on it was good. It especially won't work now. Posted by: Oldcat at April 10, 2024 05:22 PM (eoQWY) 422

Overlord DVD has run rumor reports saying the same thing about Hollywood generally. AWFLs have been allowed to run riot, making decisions that turn off the non-woke. The stuff they choose to greenlight and the stuff they reject is so ridiculously out of touch with viewers' sensibilities, it's amazing they're still in business at all.
Remember the complete wonderment Hollywood expressed after Top Gun: Maverick came out? "What?? A feel-good/Americana/good guy movie with traditional morals and gender roles? Who wants that??" And then they shat all over the human trafficking Caveziel movie, which did really well. They just don't get it. I literally cannot think of a single tv drama or comedy out there (or coming soon) that plays to normalcy. It's all more and more violent, more and more prurient, more and more psychologically twisted. Or woke AF. The Terminal List was good (hated by reviewers, natch.) The most recent thing I was excited to see was Masters of the Air, and it was solidly 'meh.' Resident Alien is good (mostly) but I've missed too much of the timeline to jump back in. I end up watching The Repair Shop more often than anything else. Posted by: red speck at April 10, 2024 05:45 PM (0Id0S) 439

Posted by: ballistic at April 10, 2024 04:53 PM (oqH4h) Even without the bad content, the bloat of movie run length shows the decline in moviemaking skill. Part of the skill in making a movie is putting in enough, and cutting what you don't need. You can survive a long movie if that is well done - the re-enactor show in TNT's Gettysburg was long, but it had a lot to show. Also LOTR trilogy. But the Hobbit had too little content for the time it ran, and the hour long Rings of Power were worse from the long reviews I watched. Posted by: Oldcat at April 10, 2024 06:03 PM (eoQWY) 440
"The Mandalorian" Season 2 and limited series "Andor," both "Star Wars" properties.
The only two things that were remotely good on Disney+. The rest was just trash. Secret Invasion was the biggest load of crap I've ever seen. And the marvels - forget "woke" it just didn't make any sense at all. It was boring. Apple TV isn't half bad (Masters of the Air was excellent). I get prime free. Peacock is surprisingly worth it - every month they seem to have one big Universal movie worth watching, which covers the $5.99 cost. Outside of that I wouldn't watch it. I had Hulu and dumped it - way too expensive. I'm willing to drop about $30 a mo. for my entertainment. that means up to 3 services, 4 with free prime.
