Ace of Spades Pet Thread, April 13

Good afternoon and welcome to the almost world famous Ace of Spades Pet Thread. Thanks for stopping by. Kick back and enjoy the world of animals.

Would you like a treat?

Let's relax a little with the animals and leave the world of politics and current events outside today.

Thinking of getting some chicks?

A daschund in a purse is not the worst thing I saw today. Also saw a poodle in a papoose.

Dogs have legs. Let them walk!

When is it a good idea to carry a dog, and when isn't it a good idea?

Happy dog of the day pic, a 9 week old Border Collie enjoying an outing with his new family.

Awwww . . . By-Tor seems to run into a lot of fun dogs.

I recommend eye protection. And maybe a towel to hold the bird in. I used a dish towel to move a fairly large bird out of the house once. It had fallen down the chimney.

This is Ricky a 11 year old chihuahua yorkie mix. He had a lot of health issues and went straight to a foster volunteer from Shep's. Sadly his issues were more than he could overcome and he crossed the rainbow bridge April 8. But he was still a Shep's dog.

Awww, Ricky!

My wife and I have had 11 dogs throughout our 44 year marriage... some came from breeders and some were rescues. Seven of those dogs have been Great Danes. A year and a half ago, our blue Dane named Malakai, was getting on about 6 1/2 years old. That is geriatric for a Dane, so we resolved to get one more Dane puppy to be our last Dane. Enter Strider, a fawn.

Malakai was sweet natured, as Danes are. He enjoyed big, manly play like tug of war, and chasing me around the kitchen island. But he was always a stolid sort... a little stoic. He was the protector of the house who warned us of every one who violated the perimeter. He weighed 160 lbs and loved to sit in my wife's lap.

Strider was a goofy playful clown. Sweeter than sugar. He actually enjoyed full, arms-around-the-neck hugs and nose-to-nose soul gazes. In our experience, that is rare in a dog. Often, in the night he would come to my side of the bed and nuzzle me for a few moments just to say hello before going back to his bed.

Near the start of last February, at the age of a year and a half, Strider came down with a mystery illness. After trips to two different vets we still never identified what was making him sick. By the first of March, he had fought long enough. We didn't have the heart to ask him to fight any longer so we let him go.

A month later, Malakai developed a severe limp and a swollen ankle. He was barely able to stand. The trip to the vet confirmed that he had bone cancer. We let him go to rest 33 days after Strider.

The grief over losing two such sweet souls back to back has been hard. But we still have Zoey, a lab mix. She is an infectiously happy dog who goes loves to go camping with us. I walk her every day. She has stepped up to let us know that we are still loved and adored. She is my constant shadow... laying by my feet even as I write this.

We want Zoey to have a companion and we have a hole we need to fill in our hearts. So we have begun looking into options for bringing another dog into our family. The joy of having dogs in our lives more than pays for the pain of losing them.

-Clay

"The sun is riz, the sun is set...
And here I is in Texas yet."

Sweet dogs. Sorry for your losses. Glad you still have Zoey.

19 Afternoon, pet people,

Grand stories today about Malakai, Strider, and Zoey. (A nice rhythm to those three names.) And in the cat "caught cheating" video, that is exactly the interpretation their body language says!

20 Meow!

When I used to watch my sisters' cats, when she was out of town, they would do what that black cat on the table above would do. Block a view of the TV until their demands were met. Food dish refill, scritches, told how beautiful they were, more scritches, etc. I do miss her kittuhs'. They died a few years ago. Black Persians. Lived a while. 16 years, more or less. Not long enough though.

22 As some o fyou know, little Dagny La Siberienne went off to Miss Linda's last week for "spring kitten camp." In L.'s words, she was "courteous" and a "well-mannered" house guest. Those are not words I would have used to describe an energetic two-year-old cat, but whatever. She did sleep w/ L. at night a few times, something she rarely does with me.

When L. brought her back, she galloped around, checking out and recognizing her old territory; and she and big black Stirling sniffed each other, made the usual cat passwords or recognition signs and everything was fine.

The "crystal" litter product that L. brought Dagny over in part to test, seemed to work fine and did not bother the girl cat in the least.

26 I caught a bat with a piece of Tupperware once. I think maybe the cat brought it in. This was a few months after my husband died, so there was no one else to do it.

27 Pax the cat uses the pellet type litter box. She resisted until she was seriously injured back in December. For some reason, being barely able to walk caused her to stop fussing about the litter and just do her business.

30 Miss Linda mentioned to me that at the Petco around the corner from us, there is a rescue cat for adoption: a male shorthair, white with a light or "dilute" gray patched coat. He seemed quite happy to interact with people. I said, "Your new cat?" To which she shrugged.

We have a couple of ferals here who stop by for dry food occasionally: a red tabby, and a tortoiseshell with a white tail tip. Neither one will let you approach, but the tortie will come up to my step and eat from the bowl, even if I'm standing inside the door, as long as the screen door is shut.

If I'm going to be running a food kitchen for ferals, I need to buy some cheaper dry food, like Alley Cat or Friskies. The Purina One stuff I give my two (along with canned Friskies or Blue Buffalo) is pricier, and I have to save it for them. (Not even the ferals will eat the dry food from Dollar Tree.)

31 A few years ago, I encountered a curious hawk on a tee box. I walked up, tried to shoo it away and it just looked at me. I then used my driver and, gently, waved it in front of the young hawk. It just followed the driver head and looked at me. I took a step forward and the hawk took a step towards me. I then just tee'd up and hit. Once I hit the ball, the hawk flew into a nearby tree. It was odd behavior. Not aggressive at all, just curious.

He wasn't armed but did find out that even though he is 60ish and has some heart and weight problems, he can still run. She was not included to chase. May have little ones around. My town has a variety of hawks, owls and eagles but the most prominent are ospreys. A conservation group in town puts up nests for them and they return year after year.

I was walking with Elvis down by a marsh the other day and an osprey with a fish in his talons came up over the bluff and cruised a few feet over my head and just eyeballed me with a "What are you looking at?" attitude.
