Good afternoon and welcome to the almost world famous Ace of Spades Pet Thread. Thanks for stopping by. Kick back and enjoy the world of animals.

Would you like a treat?

Let's relax a little with the animals and leave the world of politics and current events outside today.

Pet News

From By-Tor:

I'll summarize so you don't have to read it:
Don't hold your pet's head and hold his eyes open and point him at the sun during the eclipse. He doesn't care about it.

Apart from that, they will be fine.

Nature or nurture?

A certain well-known Canadian blog recently featured this longer video of two border collies at work in Scotland. With a human. A lot of this has to be "nurture".

Meet The PetMorons

Hi and thank you for the Pet Thread every week! I'm a lurker and rare commenter, usually going by uafanct.

All of my pets of the past 12 years have been graciously featured in the Pet Thread at some point, except for the one I have now.

I'm submitting this in memorial on the coming anniversary of his crossing the rainbow bridge. This handsome boy, Muffin, was found by me at my place of work at the time just over 12 years ago apparently abandoned, and foraging in the dumpsters for who-knows-how-long to that point. He chose me to be his human for some reason and honestly, the Lord could not have gifted me a better cat.

He was the most loving cat ever - literally loved to be held in a hug position, hugging me back almost as long as I wanted, and sometime grabbing my neck to keep me from putting him down. That's how he got his name - he was just a big ole' love muffin. I called him many names, including little lion because he was so regal looking. He was also fiercely protective, which seemed unusual in a cat, and almost all who saw him wanted him because he was so big, sweet tempered and beautiful. It was heart wrenching to let him go, but far too selfish to not. He will always be special and I will always miss you my buddy.

A beautiful memorial for a beautiful cat. Thanks.

Kira and Rudy Treat.jpg

&&&

Rudy2 July 16 2020.jpg

We had a rough March this year as our 11 year old Somali-mix Rudy suddenly developed fluid on his lungs. After watching him become more lethargic and hiding a lot, we took him to the Vet. We tried medications but between the Thursday and Saturday before Holy Week he deteriorated, finally struggling to breathe. He passed in the car on the way to the vet's office to try emergency surgery.

My wife and I (mostly her) fostered him and his four siblings from 2 days old. At 2 months, we gave three of the siblings up for adoption (they all found homes within a couple of days). His sister Kira stayed with us. She is aware something is wrong and seems to be wondering where Rudy has gone.

He was a wonderful, intelligent and impatient friend who loved to be scritched and stroked and insisted that we add ice cubes to his water bowl before he would drink. We have been proud to be called his faithful servants.

The photo shows Rudy (the orange one) and Kira (buff and white) a few months ago. The other shows Rudy keeping my wife company at her work desk.

Thank you for your Pet Thread. It's always a comfort to see that goodness and innocence still exist in our darkening world.

Mitch in Tucson

So sorry that you have lost wonderful Rudy. Give some extra love to Kira for us. She is a beautiful cat, too.

CBD has graciously formatted Bonecrusher's short video of little Sarah playing with big brother Buster. Looks like a fair match, don't you think?

They were featured on March 16 in a glamour shot. Click on the photo. See if I formatted this thing correctly.

17 Reading the content for some reason caused the room to become very dusty.
We lost Belle recently, after 17 years of companionship. She occasionally contributed to this blog by finding mysterious key combinations on my laptop.
Our cat Mocha, who recently had ear surgery, has tumors on her lower jaw and under the tongue. We are going to lose her. Right now she is okay, still doing cat things and enjoying her food. Vet says 6 -12 months. Mocha is 14 and has been with us since we found her in our back yard at about 4-6 weeks. She is the most intelligent of all our numerous cats. She knows her name and we only have to say it once and she'll turn around. She talks to us. I firmly believe she knows many English phrases.

18 Border collies are amazing dogs. I all most got one for the family but was educated about what it takes to have one. Didn’t do it, probably for best for both the dog and us.

Posted by: Rufus T. Firefly at April 06, 2024 03:46 PM (o5xMZ)

19 Nature or nurture?

Both.

We've bred dogs to highlight one particular instinct. Herd these, or fetch that, or guard this. Five thousand years ago you were a wolf, now you're a golden retriever. "Nurture."

But try to get a herding breed to not herd things, or a retriever to not play fetch. It won't work. The couple two doors down has an aussie shepherd. She's so happy when I meet them when they're out walking her. She got more humans together in a herd! And you can see two little Blue Screens Of Death pop up behind her eyes when I walk off in a different direction. She wasn't trained for herding, but it's in her blood anyway.

So at this point, it's "nature."

Pressure wave, the P-wave, hits a few seconds before an earthquake is felt. Pets with good hearing might feel that phenomenon that humans can't.

26 Our 1 yr old Weimaraner has developed an autoimmune disease called Masticatory Myositus. It started around his left eye, swelling and redness and went around to the left side if his head. Then he couldn't open his jaws to eat. We got him to the vet and she diagnosed it almost immediately. She also aspirated some of the fluid from his face and it was filled with bacteria. She put him on antibiotics and prednisone and sent out blood to confirm her diagnosis. The medications worked almost miraculously and he started eating and drinking again. He is nearly back to normal but has to stay on an immunosuppressive for at least 6 months. I had never heard of this but she said its pretty common in large dogs especially Golden Retrevier and Weims. He scared us but he's getting better.

37 Our senior rescue Bichon can still learn. We always put our pups in a pen when we run errands. Precious has learned what 'bed' means and sloooowly walks into the pen. She does not really approve of this practice, since she should be in the car with us. But knowing she will get a snack when we return helps. All her predecessors knew the word but that was from puppyhood. Precious got it at 15.

On the other hand, she has trained us. We walk her in the same area every day. If we vary from her 'approved' route, she stops and looks at us as if to say "There are some things that should not be changed." Of course, that attitude lasts until she smells where squirrels or rabbits have walked on the grass.

47 Afternoon, Pet People!

Muffin and Rudy (esp. in the second pic) look much like my late Arizona, the part-Coon (?) red tabby with white who shared my life for sixteen years and a bit more. AZ had less whit ethan Muffin and more than Rudy, but the resemblance is remarkable. I also used to call him the mini-lion despite his tiger stripes, because of that full ruff like a lion's mane. My first longhair cat, and the one who changed my preference to the longer-haired felines forever.

48 I give our Luna a tablespoon of pumpkin puree (NOT pie filling) every day to stabilize digestion. Apparently it's good for upset stomach, constipation, and diarrhea.

Told a neighbor about it and it cured his dog's recurring diarrhea. I doubt it would work for dogs with serious digestive system problems, but it might help with run-of-the-mill upsets.

49 As for Chez Wolfus, cat statuses: Big black Stirling is quite pleased to have to himself while little Dagny visits, a sort of summer camp, with Miss Linda. She tells me Dagny, who is not a strongly demonstrative cat, does hop on the bed with her now and then, and comes walking over when called -- the same as she does here. She, Dagny I mean, does not seem to miss Stirling, but he is clearly bored without her and is showing me even more affection than usual.

Perfessor, we won't have more than 80% of the thing on Monday, even if it is clear. Though I recall in May of '84 we had close to a 100% total here in the morning. I do recall the birds around the house -- I lived in a double across the street from a newly opened park -- got eerily quiet in the near-twilight and coolness. Temps dropped about ten degrees too, I think.

Arizona, the shaggy red tabby I mentioned above, freaked out. He would stare out of one living room window, squeak in distress, run to the other and peer out, then race back, stopping to glare at me with a "You're in charge of weather! Fix this!" look.

We are supposed to get about 95% totality around here. This will be the second such eclipse for Penny, Jasmine, and Kaylee. It will be the first for Hexie and Allie.

I'm sure they'll be fine, but perhaps a bit agitated when I get home. It's supposed to occur during prime cat napping time (2 p.m. local), so they may just sleep through it.

53 Stirling has taken to sitting with me on the couch. Normally he settles atop the back, where I have a blanket folded for the cats to nap, but yesterday evening he settled down right alongside my leg as I read, and now he's grooming himself on the couch cushion to my right.

Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at April 06, 2024 04:43 PM (omVj0)

54 Being in Florida we won't be affected by the eclipse. I'm pretty sure Lincoln would yawn since its not a stick or a ball. But he does react to dog TV. He'll bark at the screen and then stare at me like its my fault that there are dogs running that he can't play with.

Posted by: Megthered at April 06, 2024 04:44 PM (BolxK)

55 The otter video is really cool. The late Wolf would reach out with one huge paw while on the bathroom counter if he thought I hadn't petted him enough, and Stirling likes to snag my shirt as I walk by the kitchen counter. "Hey, don't forget me!"

The quote from Suzanne Clothier posted on X is exactly right about our relationships with our animal friends.

57 Re: animals learning word sounds . . . The late Marie-Antoinette the smart black longhair cat knew her name or any variation of it ("Marie," "Twanette"), even to noticing once when a character on TV mentioned the famous French queen. And that was not her name from kittenhood, either. The woman who rescued her at less than one year of age, and gave her to Linda, did not know her previous name and dubbed her M-A because of her regal assumption that she owned and ruled whatever she beheld. (Like all cats, I guess.)

Arizona knew his name, the word "No" (though he'd often look at me and then ignore it), and "feed." I fell into the habit of saying aloud, "Have to feed a beast," and he swiftly connected that with meal delivery.

58 > Re: animals learning word sounds . . .
__________

Personally, I think it's the inflection one uses. I can shout "stop!" or "yellow!" at our cats and they'll run off.

Cooing "stop" or "yellow" will yield nothing but some yawns and being ignored.

But... "who want's din-din" will yield the expected results no matter what... so maybe there's something going on here.
