I'm not a fan of the artist's style overall but this one has a certain appeal. Bob has the look of someone who has been around the block a few times and seen things. He now enjoys the simple pleasure of beautiful, fragrant cut flowers, a corn cob pipe and a good book (Bible?). The objects and simple background almost detract from Bob's figure but almost, not completely. And the match holder/ashtray on the right adds another homey touch. (As a pipe smoker I wouldn't mind having one like that.)

Wait, that's a black dude? [From online search:] "Uncle Bob is a painting by Archibald J. Motley, Jr., an American painter associated with the Harlem Renaissance. It is the first work by Motley to enter The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s collection. Motley is known for his depictions of everyday life in the Bronzeville area of Chicago and his portraiture practice. He was born on October 7, 1891, in New Orleans, Louisiana, and passed away on January 16, 1981, in Chicago, Illinois." Posted by: I am the Shadout Mapes, the Housekeeper at April 19, 2024 09:40 AM (PiwSw) ++++ The Vase, The Book, The Bowl and the Metronome A Study of Common Anglo-American Ecclectica, ca. 1870-1920 The expansion of readily-available consumer goods during the late 19th and early 20th centuries led to a greater consumption of a wider variety of goods, particularly in the United States and the United Kingdom. One side effect of this increased consumption was the development of a "collection culture" where objects were acquired, retained and displayed rather than commonly or routinely used. This growth of "collections" and associated increase in acquisition for its own sake is examined through an ethno-anthropological framework, with comparisons drawn to contemporary "consumer culture," with recommendations for reducing excessive consumption to reduce the social effects of wealth disparity and the ecological effects of climate change. Huh, I cannot find this one on wikiart. 1929.
I like the artists style. Feels very 20s. He seemed to like naked women, the figures are more realistic than idealized. The page on this one at the Met: "He painted several family members—usually elders—throughout his career. His sitter in this instance is his mother’s half-brother, Robert (Bob) White, who was born enslaved in 1850 but eventually owned his own farm. Motley portrays him at home in Arkansas seated on his porch, wizened by age after decades of labor. The table next to him features a still life arrangement of a vase of flowers, an ashtray complete with match holder, and a book, perhaps a Bible, a detail that might signify White’s literacy." Me: or maybe Bob's devotion to God? Crazy idea, I know, Mr Commie Writer. Posted by: Aetius451AD at April 19, 2024 09:50 AM (di6C2) Posted by: Bulgaroctonus at April 19, 2024 09:50 AM (9yWhg) 103

You'd think, with the overall look of the painting, Uncle
Bob would be holding a corn cob pipe. But that one, though the right color, has a narrow decorative band between the pipe body and the stem (the part that goes into your mouth). Normally cob pipes don't have any frills like that. Still, it's neat that he is clearly sitting on his porch, with a book and his pipe. True Codger-hood is only attained when one wears a belt AND suspenders. Uncle Bob has sadly, fallen short.

One of the Bobs (the tall skinny one) wears suspenders that are made out of those woven leather belts. "His sitter in this instance is his mother’s half-brother, Robert (Bob) White, who was born enslaved in 1850 but eventually owned his own farm. LSMFT has another slang meaning that I heard many years ago when I was working blue-collar. It's prob. not appropriate for a family blog.
Lucky Strike had an ad campaign in the Forties after America got into the war. Apparently their cig packs used to sport a green stripe, or were green. After Dec. 1941, LS canceled the green, and ads proclaimed, "Lucky Strike Green Has Gone to War!" I guess they wanted you to think that the green dye was essential to the war effort -- that they were sacrificing the old packaging for the duration. (I don't think the green package ever came back.) Columbia president Minouche Shafik repeated this claim at a meeting of the university’s senate. "Demonstrators," she said, "were sprayed with a toxic chemical."
It now appears that the "toxic chemical" was a harmless fart spray purchased on Amazon for $26.11. According to a lawsuit filed against Columbia on Tuesday, the suspended student had in fact dispersed "Liquid Ass"—a "gag gift for adults and kids," per its product description—at an unsanctioned pro-Palestinian rally. When the magnets break loose and the convergence is out of whack.
Posted by: Sponge - F*ck Joe Biden at April 19, 2024 10:12 AM (Zz0t1) ++++ Service recommendation: When assembly 243571-J or derivative assemblies are in use, it is recommended to also check for accelerated wear-out of the green electron gun. Yellow-shafted flicker is usually related to convergence drift, but absent physical damage, it rarely occurs in the absence of abnormally reduced green intensity. If the green electron gun is at reduced output, increase its drive until it returns to normal range and advise the owner that the set will likely need to be replaced within five years. The black man in the background looks like a racist caricature, because he is. They're "between acts" in a musical revue, and that character was a mainstay (Mister Interlocutor) from minstrelsy right up to the Technicolor era.
Bert Williams, who wrote the first all-black show on Broadway, used to have to wear black-face makeup because he was Bahamian, and didn't blend in with the other actors. When the "coon show" started to go out of style due to white folks' racial sensibilities both ways, black performers complained bitterly because the buck'n'wing high stepper characterizations had been good steady work for a long time. Ha, go figure:
I dipped into the market a month or so ago and bought 10 mighty shares of Netflix (NFLX) at around $570 per share. I usually do not buy (sometimes to my detriment) the latest thing people buzz about. NFLX has been around a while, and I watched the DEIsney earnings call two quarters ago, and compared it to NFLX's call a few days later. Compared to vague, blue sky bullshitting Disney, those Netflix fuckers were focused, raging capitalists intent on making money. They knew their shit cold. So, I bought those shares for fun. Fast forward to yesterday. NFLX earnings call was decent, but they said they were going to stop reporting subscribers numbers and average revenue per subscriber, because that metric is misleading, since the price points are different in each country. Logical to me. The market freaked out over it, and NFLX dropped like 40 points (LOL). Now I am back to even. People are sheep. Go figure. Immigrants and American Anxiety. Tune out the demagogues and look for the deeper economic and cultural sources of our unease.
REPUBLICANS TORPEDOED a tough, comprehensive bill that would have brought serious and much-needed reform to our southern border...Republicans...decided they could not win the 2024 election if the border was not visibly chaotic....Trump, offers one central explanation for the source of Americans’ problems: immigrants. Without immigrants streaming into the country, Republicans would be forced to deal with the complicated reality of why Americans feel more alone and unhappy than ever before. It turns out impoverished people making a desperate play for a better life are not the true source of our angst, so even if the border were brought under control, our spiritual crisis would have remained. It falls to us to rebuild a sense of obligation to each other—a new American solidarity. We need to build concrete policies that prevent excesses and cruelties now permitted in the name of profit. we need to rebuild a culture that prioritizes the common good—the idea we owe more to each other than just whatever the market will allow us to get away with. Without immigrants streaming into the country, Republicans would be forced to deal with the complicated reality of why Americans feel more alone and unhappy than ever before.
