Love this painting. My artistic mentor, the painter Ellie Siskind, was huge on curtains and sheets and folds of all kinds as a study subject, mainly because of their utility in the study of shading and color values. Da Vinci spent countless hours on such studies. In this painting, the sense of flowing movement and the variations in form create a lighter-than-air sensation that just, well, sends me. Would love to see this painting itself, up close and personal.

Regarding the Baltimore ship bridge strike and collapse:
1. The ship was transiting during slack tide on the ebb, which is the time when tidal currents are minimum as the harbor goes from ebb to flood. Going out as low tide is preferable for ships with high "air draft" clearances under bridges. 2. A ship over 900 feet should have had at least two escort tugs to assist the ship in case of emergency, especially if it is transiting under a bridge. Even if the ship lost power, the assist tugs could keep the ship in the channel. 3. The pilots should have been able to talk to the assist tugs even if they lost power because they should have had secondary handheld radios. 4. The only reason the ship may not have had assist tugs is if the Captain of the Port (USCG) waived that requirement. If he is confident that the weather, tides, currents and ship's ability to maneuver (bow thrusters, for example), he can grant a waiver. There should be digital tapes of the radio comms with the Vessel Traffic Service for the area. I would be interested to see what the pilots told the tugs and the VTS watchstanders. Most traffic had been cleared / halted. The ship notified State authorities of the power failure some time before hitting the concrete pillar. There were a few construction vehicles on the span when it collapsed.
In the long version of the clip I saw on Fox this morning you can see 3 semis crossing the bridge right before the collapse. Those guys need to pull over and buy Powerball tickets. "Regionally" is relative - a major port closed for some amount of time. Also this will impact traffic on I95 for hundreds of miles north and south of Baltimore. It is going to add hours to HAZMAT and heavy loads moving through the region. It's not the apocalypse but it's gonna leave a mark. Posted by: blaster at March 26, 2024 10:34 AM (ASVTS) A post 9/11 Hoover ram was closed to trucks which required an extra 2 hours of driving each way. And that lasted for several years until a bridge was built. And there have been other bridges collapse, causing detours. There was one about 10 years ago in Washington where I-5 was closed. Traffic was diverted and life went on. In a 20 trillion dollar economy, a bridge no longer available is a blip. Posted by: Montec at March 26, 2024 10:38 AM (bWsRe) 380

No bridges on my route though. Posted by: nurse ratched at March 26, 2024 *** There's an avenue in the SE part of the metro area here that's closed right now because of structural damage. It won't be the bridge that affects the economy, it is the prolonged blocking of the harbor that will affect the economy.
Which will ripple because ships are trapped in the harbor, ships that cost money and sitting generates no revenue. And those ships who were supposed to dock in Baltimore now have to find somewhere else to off-load and on-load. And then have to ship that cargo. "Drapery Paintings" by David Ligare at Winfield Gallery, Carmel, California, May 2023.
In part, "Ligare’s first exhibition of the thrown drapery paintings was in New York in 1978. The paintings consisted of a piece of white cloth thrown into the air, captured with a camera and then redrawn on the canvas to conform to a geometrical structure. The paintings represented the Classical balance between the ordered and the chaotic. Poet and critic, Peter Clothier, wrote in the 1978 catalogue that, “If the work reaches for a new “Classicism”, then, it does not fail to account for the contemporary mind’s conditioning by twentieth century concepts and technology. The archetype is recontexturalized, without losing any of its ancient values.” No, wouldn't hang this one but it's a smart concept to keep the artist both in vogue & S. Thanks.
