Daily Tech News 23 March 2024

Top Story

  • If I'm presented with two resumes for a new hire, one a recent Harvard graduate with a PhD in precisely the field I am hiring for, and the other a community college dropout whose only programming experience is putting together a popular Minecraft modpack, I'm hiring the Minecraft kid.

    Just saying.

  • A quick and perhaps useful summary of the Apple antitrust case. (Tech Crunch)

The one thing of note is this line describing Apple's response to the suit:
And in regulating the behaviors that the DOJ claims are monopolistic, Apple's competitive advantage in the market would be diminished and iPhone customers negatively impacted in the process.
    Well, yeah.

Diminishing competitive advantage in the market is the entire point of antitrust actions.

And Apple claiming that following the law would negatively affect its customers has been the company's response to every interaction with regulators for the past decade at least.

It's kind of boring, guys. At least come up with a new lie.

  • Meanwhile The Verge barfed up this. (The Verge)

There were some in yesterday's comment section arguing I was favoring the woke fascist idiots at the DOJ over the woke fascist idiots at Apple who at the end of the day at least produce something.

But if you read even a small part of this pile of drivel - and I certainly wouldn't suggest reading more than that - I think we can all agree that the worst of the lot are the journalists reporting on this story.

In this case we're dealing with Sarah Jeong, the journalistic equivalent of Cymothoa exigua.

Don't look that up if you don't want nightmares.

You should probably avoid looking up C. exigua as well.

Tech News

  • Micron has shown off samples of its new DDR5-8800 256GB MCR memory modules. (AnandTech)

These use two sets of memory chips the same way other high-capacity modules do, but with a difference: The chips are interleaved so that bytes of data are read from both banks of chips at once, doubling the bandwidth.

This is how a high-capacity server module can be as fast as the best overclocked desktop modules.

Kind of neat, but not something that's likely to trickle down to the consumer space any time soon.

It does give a single-socket 4th generation Epyc server nearly 900GB per second of memory bandwidth, though. That used to be a lot.

  • The first nuclear fusion rocket engine is ready for delivery. (Interesting Engineering)

I'm not sure how seriously to take this report, but the device does spray ionising radiation all over the place, so it's doing something.

  • Users are complaining on Twitter that Instagram and Threads are restricting political content from recommendation results. (Ars Technica)

This apparently is a new setting in the respective apps, which silently appeared and was silently turned on for everyone.

On the other hand, Threads did specifically announce that they intended to do this.

  • 34 nations met in Brussels to pledge to build more nuclear reactors. (Associated Press)

This has upset all the right people.
"Nuclear, all the evidence shows, is too slow to build. It's too expensive. Much more expensive than having peasants ploughing the fields by hand," said the remarkably named Lorelei Limousin of Greenpeace. "The government must focus on developing real solutions that work for people - like abandoning the poor to starve in the dark while I swan off to Majorca - not nuclear energy which has been established as safe and reliable for decades. Shit. One of you polish that up before it goes to press."

For what I was rambling about with Windows 10/11 experimental "UTF-8" "locale" and code page support. Go to:

Control Panel > Clock and Region > Region > Administrative tab > Change system locale button > enable "Beta: Use Unicode UTF-8 for worldwide language support"

That will set the code page to "UTF-8" (which is doing violence to the meaning of "code page", and an encoding scheme.

20 Evening and morning to all the early risers and late toilers! Pixy is about to go off daylight saving time, while we have just begun it. I don't know what that means except that it reflects the great dichotomy between the Northern Hemisphere and the Southern.

(I dredged up "dichotomy" out of my brain, and even spelled it right? Maybe I did get enough sleep last night!)

24 Having some coffee while I wake the rest of the way up. Big black Stirling had to start nuzzling and bumping me just now. He's used to me being up earlier than this.

He's gonna have a shock today: vet trip, to see if there's some reason he has thinning spots in his fur. Whatever it is, it doesn't affect little Dagny; she has fur to spare. (Though if she could donate some to her "big brother," he'd look like a black-haired guy who isn't bothering to touch up the gray in his beard.)

92 Remember TuCa in those last one or two days, on FNC, before they fired him? He had that scared-rabbit face, having in the last couple shows done some Ray Epps and J6 tapes expose stuff. He'd gotten too close to the truth for the leftist scum up at the top floor at Fox.

The Jessica Tarlov smear act, the one she did on FNC's "The Five," lying about Tony Bobulinksi and then doing a non-apology "clarification" after ToBo's lawyers lit into her and FNC, it produced the same scared-rabbits.

ToBo's lawyers demanded a true apology, insisting the Friday show BEGIN with Tarlov doing it. Instead, the show, with Tarlov but minus the fiery Judge Janine, went on as if nothing had happened. Tarlov did not lead, it was Gutfeld followed by Watters or whatever. All as if nothing had happened. No mention at all of it.

Except for the faces and the notably quiet lead-in segment. I want to see Tarlov and FNC pay ToBo a half a billion in punitive.

I run into a lot of people - a whole lot - who are simply insistent that everyone, in different parts of the country as well as different parts of the world, are generally the same. With the same system of values and priorities.

Its just not true. We have distinct cultures in the United States, believe me, there are VASTLY different cultures around the globe. And not just the superficial shit like clothes and food. Fundamental, often incompatible, differences in value systems.

But you'll never hammer that into the head of someone who's never left their own little burg, and takes comfort in their assumptions.

But Nah! The greenies and feds made it so difficult, they converted the plant to be coal fired and passed on the $$Billion on the ratepayers.

Of all of those different types of phones that you mentioned, only two really exist anymore. Google's phone and Samsung - of which I own and I paid 2x what any iPhone cost at the time because its *actual* cutting-edge tech (Galaxy Z Fold 4).
If you want to develop apps for iOS, you have to use a Mac for some reason - even though its all just source code in the end. If you want to publish an app on the iOS ecosystem, you have to publish it on the App Store with their draconian, nonsensical rules. For example, I wanted to release an app where you could download individual configuration files for the app that would allow it to enable different functionality - each one costing a mere 0.50 USD. Apple denied my app. Why? Because I was referencing external source files to those published with the app on the appstore.

You can't get around this issue by sideloading apps outside of the app store on it either. Imagine buying a PC and then having the manufacturer tell you what applications you're allowed to have on it? Imagine being a developer that has new and innovative ideas for new apps such as contactless payment systems - only to have Apple deny your app and instead steal that tech for themselves.
They are a den of thieves, liars and charlatans and deserve nothing but the holy fires of purgatory for their predatory ways.
Again, there's nothing WOKE about monopoly busting. The work for this lawsuit started under Trump's administration.

253 "Salty, I just looked at Realtor for Salina, and there are a few properties that look nice. No idea about neighborhoods, though. And the property taxes are higher than similarly priced houses in Evansville, IN."

Go east a few miles and look into Abeline. A few years back the wife and I were on walkabout - actually, pickup and trailer driveabout - and we stopped for the night in Abeline. Spent 3 days there. It's a farm town economically, but with enough tourist/cultural things to leaven it: Eisenhower museum, Independent Telephone Museum combined with county museum, Greyhound Museum, etc. Classic small town America with some sprinkles on it. I retired to N Az because I like high desert, but if I liked "flat", I'd pick it.

254 I'm hiring the Minecraft kid.

Based solely upon the credentials you posted, I'd make the same decision. Hopefully the Minecraft kid isn't a person of pronouns.

Argh. It's a glib answer to a difficult problem. Software engineering is non-trivial, and I've worked with enough self-taught developers to know that they're much more prone to the Dunning-Kruger effect. I know that someone with a CS degree is going to at least have had exposure to Big-O algorithm analysis, queuing and graph theory, and concurrency. And enough exposure to hardware to understand why you don't write code you care about in a dynamically typed scripting language.

Still won't stop them from trying to turn everything into microservices, though.
