Planet Fitness Loses $400 Million in Stock Value as Boycott Grows Over Its Policy of Allowing Men in the Women's Changing Rooms

You may have heard about Planet Fitness.

Earlier this week, a woman in Alaska photographed what is clearly a man shaving his face in the ladies bathroom.

She said he was in the bathroom while a 12-year-old girl was present.

She reported him to Planet Fitness' management.

Planet Fitness acted quickly: They cancelled the woman's membership and re-affirmed that Gender Is Whatever You Think It Is This Minute.


And now: There are calls for a national boycott of Planet Fitness.

And their stock price is taking a hit:

People calling for a boycott of Planet Fitness over its handling of transgender issues are claiming success after the gym chain's stock market value took a huge hit over the past week, and Elon Musk has weighed in.

On March 17, the right-wing social media account Libs of TikTok posted on X, formerly Twitter, about a 2023 incident involving a man who allegedly exposed himself to a 15-year-old in a women's locker room at Planet Fitness in Monroe, Georgia.

Note that that is a previous incident.


The gym chain's value dropped from $5.3 billion on March 14 to $4.9 billion on March 19. Its $400 million fall has also been linked to a refusal to reverse the cancelation of an Alaskan customer's membership for sharing a photo of a 'trans woman' using a female locker room.

On X, formerly Twitter, [Robbie] Starbuck said: "Wow @PlanetFitness, It looks like letting men into the women's locker room where they can spy on them while they change (including underage girls) is NOT super popular!"

"This pain will continue until you stop letting men into women's spaces," Starbuck added. "We won't stop. #BoycottPlanetFitness."

Billionaire businessman Elon Musk, who acquired X in 2022, weighed in on the matter this week.

"Yeah, this is messed up," Musk wrote in response to Starbuck's post.

Following the incident in which a "biological male" allegedly exposed himself to the 15-year-old at Planet Fitness in Monroe, Georgia, Jakorbie Dixon, 25, of Conyers was arrested. He faced "multiple warrants for public indecency by exposing himself in the female locker room," the local police department stated.

The gym chain had already been facing days of criticism over a separate incident involving a man inside a women's locker room in the presence of a child.

And last week more criticism came after it stood by its decision to cancel the membership of the Alaskan customer who reported a "man in women's locker room shaving" while a 12-year-old girl was present.

30 I used to have a PF membership. I put up with the a-hoes who exhibited TERRIBLE gym etiquette, you know hanging out at their station, talking on phone or scrolling, while I'm waiting to use it...and in general a really low rent atmosphere, which stands to reason because it was ten bucks/month.

But when I leaned down to use the water fountain and saw a glop of spit in there, that was the end. Trannies are the least of their worries.

PF bills itself as the judgment free zone, but they have more rules than many gyms. The front desk employee can trigger the lunk alarm for all sorts of behavior. They have rules against having a large water bottle. They have more strict dress code rules than many gyms. They removed all the benches and squat racks because guys and gals who do Olympic lifts aren't the right type of people.

The "Lunk Alarm."

True story. One Saturday morning I'm at the gym. Small PF, maybe about 5-6 people in there total. Dude was doing deadlifts and seemed to be pushing himself. He was banging the bar against the floor but nothing obnoxious. Like I said, 5-6 people there, nobody cared.

Front desk geek hit the alarm like 4 times. The alarm was the only thing annoying people. I couldn't believe they actually used it, but there it was. I told the guy he wasn't doing anything wrong but I didn't have a fun button to push.

It's a gym, not a library. But I think there are a lot of caveats. I've seen gorillas drop 120+ lb dumbbells in such a way people had to evade the bouncing weights. Dick move. I've also seen people abusing machines by bouncing loads off of stops. Dick move.

It also depends a bit on the floor. If there are people below you and you're not on a lifting platform, it's a dick move to drop your loaded barbell.

But people complaining about you dropping your deadlift the last few inches when you're on the ground floor are annoying. Again, it's not a library.

Having been in manufacturing and having had to do measurements with a decibel meter I can tell you that a 100-110 db noise in a gym is nothing less then nasty, obnoxious, and self-absorbed behavior. On a carpeted floor from 50 feet away, no less. Plus, I have headphones on at 75 db and am walking on a treadmill making 60 db.

In men's defense testosterone effects hearing the bad way. They may not even have a clue they're making that much noise. So somewhere in there is the truth.

I see lots of people doing bigger weights, but they're swaying all over the place, using their back to get to the top, and only doing 3/4 reps.

Half reps can be beneficial if it's what you're keeping the weight within the range where there's muscle tension. I've been focusing a lot on constant tension and you'll feel it a ton if you don't go to full lockout on most things.

My workouts (which have slacked a bit of late - need to remedy that) is body weight exercises, boxing on the heavy bag, and walking/hiking. I do have some dumbbells, but them are the only weights I use.
