The "Holy Grail of Shipwrecks" Ready to Be Plundered of Its Estimated $17 Billion in Booty

That's some sweet booty.

Since the Colombian navy discovered the final resting place of the Spanish galleon San José in 2015, its location has remained a state secret, the wreck -- and its precious cargo -- left deep under the waters of the Caribbean.

Efforts to conserve the ship and recover its precious cargo have been caught up in a complicated string of international legal disputes, with Colombia, Spain, Bolivian Indigenous groups and a US salvage company laying claim to the wreck, and the gold, silver and emeralds onboard thought to be worth as much as $17bn.

When Colombia tried to auction off part of the bounty to fund the colossal costs of recovering the ship, Unesco and the country's high courts intervened.

But eight years after the discovery, officials now say they are pushing politics to one side and could begin lifting artefacts from the "holy grail of shipwrecks" as soon as April.

"There has been this persistent view of the galleon as a treasure trove. We want to turn the page on that," Alhena Caicedo, director of the Colombian Institute of Anthropology and History, said. "We aren't thinking about treasure. We're thinking about how to access the historical and archeological information at the site."

I don't believe you.

The San José was returning to Europe with treasures to help fund the war of the Spanish succession when it was sunk by a British squadron in 1708, close to the Caribbean port city of Cartagena.

Historians say the wreck could help reveal much about the Spanish empire at the height of its power -- and the shared, overlapping histories of Europe and Latin America.

...

The closest comparison would probably be to the Mary Rose, the flagship of Henry VIII's fleet, which sank in 1545 while in battle with the French fleet off the coast of Portsmouth.

...

But while the Mary Rose lay in frigid coastal waters, the San José sank in deep, tropical waters which will probably have been cruel to the ship and could make the recovery one of the most costly and complex in history.

wagnerspaintingofthesanjose.jpg

Don't look at that painting for too long. Looking at paintings of ships may cause White Supremacy.

I had no idea 10 oz. would weigh that much (because I'm stupid).

Spain's king was dying and the idea of most powers was that the inheritance should be split up. But the king did not agree and made a will to give it to a relation of Louis XIV of France. The other powers didn't want to see Spain and France unified and a big war was the result.

Strict maritime salvage laws say whoever gets there first owns it. I tired that when a Russian barge broke loose from a tow in the channel at GITMO when we were stationed there.

I was out fishing that night in my boat and saw it break loose, I hightailed it over there to claim the barge under international law but security boats wouldn't let me claim my prize nor get anywhere near the beached barge. I tried to fight it the next day but I was told "shut up" .

I have no idea, I just read Wikipedia. I'm glad those guys won. I couldn't imagine doing all that work, it finally paying off and the government deciding they were going to take it. That just doesn't seem right. They could have just as easily found nothing, they were the people spending time and money and risk to find it, not the government.

I find this all interesting. But, what I'm really looking forward to is all the greedy bastards who will try to get their piece of it. The fact that Unesco is involved is all I need to know. There will be at least 40 or 50 claimants filing some lawsuit here or there to get "what's owed to them."

Spain, Columbia, the US salvager...China (who will somehow claim that they control that part of the ocean), The UN will dive in and try to take a chunk. The World Court will somehow suggest that the proceeds need to go to combatting climate change. Museums from around the world will team with Unesco and tie up the proceeds for years and years. The British Royal Museum is an absolute champ at that. This is going to be an total mess and I'm here for it.

Bummer.

Speculation: We've all assumed her "abdominal surgery" was a hysterectomy. Dollars to doughnuts they found either ovarian or cervical or uterine cancer. Likely ovarian, cause cervical or even uterine cancer could be more easily found in a papsmear. Ovarian cancer is much more difficult to detect. Probably also found in early stages. Going from the quotes, the chemotherapy is "preventative."

168 I found a gold ring whilst diving one time. I think my wife still has it. Not something super nice, but when we had it checked, it was 18K. Some sort of band (not a wedding band) with a detailed pattern in it.

--------------

Back in 2002 was on a vacation at an all-inclusive in Negril, Jamaica, wading in the shallow ocean beach water with dozens of other vacationers -- when a newlywed couple starts yelling for people to please stop moving around because the groom's ring had slipped off his finger and had been lost.

So we're all looking for it through the nearly crystal-clear water -- and it was cool because you could see a lot of starfish and sand dollars.

Anyway, after a couple of minutes -- the groom was able to spot it lying on the sandy bottom -- resulting in cheers all around.

[And I'm absolutely stunned that I have not lost my wedding ring in the past 20 years -- although had a few close calls, one necessitating that I go buy a metal detector to find it in the backyard grass.

>>Once you start talking real money, governments move in and take everything.

When I was diving in the Carib I knew a couple guys who were doing treasure diving. At that time anyway they prospected by themselves but as soon as they found anything that looked valuable they had to report it to be legal but also to keep others from moving in on their claim.

Double edged sword. In theory they got government protection but that same government wanted their cut.

Yes and no. If you're just going to melt it down or piece it out as a commodity, then, sure, go radio silent. However, if it's a historical (re)discovery, you have to establish provenance to appreciate the full, "priceless" value. To do that, The World has to know.

See the great little movie, The Deep, starring Nick Nolte and Jacqueline Bisset's wet T-shirt for references.

I was in Ireland in 2000 staying at a B&B operated by an archeologist recently retired from the Eire government. The rest of my group were tired an hit the sack but the owner and I walked to the local pub and had a wee drop. He told me that they had found the wreck of the Spanish Armada gold ship off western Ireland but as they had joined the EU decided to keep quiet about it so they didn't have to share it with the rest of Europe. They were already upset about the Spanish over-fishing their waters.

Individual gold coins not much of a problem. Sell one here, sell one there. Jewelry? Break it up, sell individual stones, melt down the precious metals, and sell small amounts as "bullion recovered from scrap". Sure, you will lose a lot of value from the hypothetical value of "priceless historical artifacts", but if you try to realize that value, you risk getting it all taken away from you, every last cent of it.

223 By some estimates there is between $60 and $100 billion dollars of "treasure" still unrecovered from known and/or suspected wrecks. None "modern." Like sinking ships with EV's on them that burned up.

I think those estimates are on the low end.

The actual amount is probably in the trillions of dollars of unknown/recovered wrecks.

For some... worthwhile to invest in.
