Ireland's Woke Prime Minister Announces "Bolt Out of the Blue" Resignation

He resigns in disgrace.

Leo Varadkar, Ireland's first openly gay taoiseach, or prime minister, said Wednesday that he would step down -- a shocking move that he said was for both "personal and political" reasons.

Varadkar, who became Ireland's youngest taoiseach in 2017, said he would also relinquish his leadership of the center-right Fine Gael party, which forms a ruling coalition government along with Fianna Fáil and the Green Party.

"I'm proud that we have made the country a more equal and more modern place," he told reporters gathered outside government buildings in Dublin.

Sounding emotional, he said there was no "real reason" behind his decision and he "had nothing else lined up."

"I have nothing in mind," he added. "I have no definite personal or political plans."

A senior Irish official told NBC News that the announcement would be "a bolt from the blue for the Irish public," which "throws everything up in the air." The official, who was not authorized to speak publicly on the matter, added that Varadkar, who trained as a physician, "didn't see a lifetime in politics."

Varadkar's departure, which comes less than a week after he met with President Joe Biden at the White House before St. Patrick's Day, will not automatically trigger an election.

Despite NBC "News" making a mystery of this sudden resignation, Ed Morrissey opines that the explanation is simple: The woke gay PM pushed forward two constitutional amendments to redefine the family and rebut gender stereotypes and the Irish public stood up and finally said "NO."

The leftwing propaganda site The Guardian agrees:

Varadkar said his reasons for stepping down were "mainly political" but did not elaborate on what they were. Earlier this month, he was widely blamed for a crushing twin defeat at the ballot box, including the biggest ever referendum loss by an Irish government.

The ruling coalition had proposed rewording the 1937 constitution to change outdated references to family and women. Critics said Varadkar had rushed the debate in a "gimmicky" effort to hold double referendums on International Women's Day, and accused him of presiding over "incoherent messaging".

Voters rejected the family referendum, with 67% voting no, and buried the other proposal, which related to women's care-giving role, in an even bigger landslide of 74%. Varadkar later accepted some responsibility, saying: "There are a lot of people who got this wrong and I am certainly one of them."

Until Wednesday's resignation, however, the political fallout from the debacle had widely been expected to be limited. Varadkar has also faced increasing discontent within Fine Gael, with 10 of its members of the Dáil Éireann -- almost a third of the party's total -- announcing they will not stand again at the next election, which must be called by early 2025.

Fine Gael has lost five recent byelections, prompting some to see Varadkar as an electoral liability. "His legacy will be that of an electoral loser," Eoin O'Malley, a political scientist at Dublin City University, told Agence France-Presse. "He promised to be a good communicator, but it turned out he was bad at it. He had no clear agenda, and delivered little."

44 Alabama Governor Signs Law Banning State Funding of DEI at Public Schools, Universities

A new Alabama law that bans state agencies, local boards of education, and institutions of higher education from sponsoring so-called diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs or offices, was signed into law on Wednesday by Gov. Kay Ivey.

Under the measure, “divisive concepts” about race, color, religion, sex, ethnicity, or national origin would be banned from being taught or sponsored by a state agency, local board of education, or public institution of higher education, such as public universities and colleges.

The legislation outlines eight “divisive concepts,” which include teachings that any race, religion, or sex is inherently superior or inferior, or that, by virtue of an individual’s race, color, religion, sex, ethnicity, or national origin, the individual is inherently racist, sexist, or oppressive—whether consciously or subconsciously.

Other “divisive concepts” include that individuals, based on factors such as race, religion or sex, are responsible for actions committed in the past by other members of the same race, color, religion, or sex.

52 Both this and the preceding thread called to mind something I've been thinking about. Until the 21st C, we in the English speaking world were pretty convinced we were the goods. Not just that being American, but the whole Anglosphere seemed much better than the rest. (I'd always said that if I couldn't live here for some reason, I'll look at Australia first.)

But no more. Badly as the West is crumbling, we all seem to be doing so worse and faster than the others. I do know that both we and the Brits have long pushed two variants of Whig history that was, basically, bullshit. How much did that have to do with it? How much is pride?

I'm too old to move nowadays, but were I young, I would be looking elsewhere. Even if we win in Nov, it's still likely we'll go under.

Their end. The long dirt nap. And they've got society to shape before they go.

We often talk here ... why don't Pelosi, Schumer, Biden, McConnell - Hell, all of them, simply take the money and slink off and enjoy the remaining time. The answer is simple - they can't. Because those generations, since at least the time they were memorialized on film and paper in the 60s, just can't live like that. They have to "make a difference".

We all bitch about Obama and his "we are the ones we were waiting on" line. It wasn't Millennials. It's this current bunch. One foot in the grave and the other on the necks of the rest of us. And just like C.S. Lewis warned, they're well intentioned. They believe they're doing it for our own good. If we like it or not.

132 Varadkar also has a Biden problem - Ireland is being overrun with "migrants", and it turns out that this is not popular among the Irish.

With, of course, continual gaslighting by the establishment media.

The worst riot in modern Irish history occurred last November after an Algerian immigrant stabbed some kids and a teacher outside an elementary school in Dublin.

The establishment media described him as an "Irish citizen", and avoided discussion of his immigrant status, and the fact that he had been unemployed for the two decades he had been in Ireland.

These facts were only publicized because of social media.

The response of the Irish government was to propose a massive crackdown on social media, to keep people from disseminating accurate information which the Irish government disapproved of.

That may be the effect, but I do not believe it's the cause. They're not simply good people gone astray. Not the top of these couple generations.

And look, it's went on for a long, long time. All the way back to the post-WW II fallout and the societal change of the Cold War. Perhaps it's simply the result of the Industrial Revolution, and the inevitable failing of large bureaucracies.

But I'm positive there is more to it. Because of the reflexive desire by many of those same cohorts to fall in lock-step and defend the obvious excesses of both ends of the modern political spectrum. Part of it is brand loyalty, and it's application to all things political and social.

178 I wonder if the Irish are getting tired of the "woke" lunatics? Besides this attempt to change their Constitution and migrants killing native-born Irish, a couple of elderly Catholic religious sisters got sent to prison recently: supposedly for abusing orphans decades ago.

The accusations were lurid but there was zero physical evidence. The religious sisters even got character testimony from adults that had been juvenile orphans under their care (back in the 1960s - 70s). One man even stated that one of the religious sisters was the only mother-figure he ever knew.

There's a reason why statutes of limitation exist. But nothing seems to deter the "woke" in their maniacal (I would say, even demoniac) quest for a Communist utopia.

Now that the question is up to the individual states, the practical result is that they are mostly killing future Democrat voters.

This is what happens when karma joins forces with the law of unintended consequences.

(It also explains why they are compelled to import more Democrat voters.)

See ? There it is. A "pick a brand" loyalist. You're either a Republican or Democrat. American or National league. Ford or GM man. Marlboro or Winston. Miller or Budweiser. Like the damn Stones song ... he can't be a man 'cause he doesn't smoke the same cigarettes as me.

What if I honestly don't trust either party ? Either ideology. Yours is simply the least dangerous one because you're not only out of power - but pretty consistent that you lack the will to grasp it ?

How does one support reform, when the only options ever put forward are to support one of the two entities that make reform so necessary ?

261 The side that had to go over there twice and fix their shit.

Kinda' ties into my theme of the day today.

Leslie McNair was the general that defined our WW II armor doctrine, right down to vehicle design and tactics. The man was also spectacularly wrong. By all definable connotations of the word. And told so by the constant feedback from the battlefield that started as soon as American boots hit the ground in North Africa.

Yet he defended his wrongness, regardless of failures, right up until the war turned. Regardless of body count. And it turned during Operation Cobra - when he went to the front lines to watch the Normandy breakout - only to eat some friendly fire and vaporize from a tactical bomber run.

And suddenly, US Armor doctrine got better. Within months. McNair is obviously older than any of the current fossils in charge. But that mentality is pretty much baked into the cake of American culture.
