The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

“An expressed willingness by Israel to forge a new relationship between Israel and the Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank with non-Hamas-led Palestinians would at least give some hope to all sides that there would never be a round of bloodletting like this again,” Thomas Friedman of NYT

Quote II

"I don’t care what sex a firefighter is as long as they can carry a 200 pound Mayor out of a burning building." Former NYC Mayor Ed Koch

Quote III

“It’s not fair that I, as the homeowner, have to be going through this.” NYC Homeowner Adele Andaloro

Quote IV

“People are fed up with the quality of life. There’s a general sense of lawlessness. You go into the CVS and there’s shoplifting. People’s cars get vandalized.” Queens NY Councilman Robert Holden
I may be a deplorable bitter clinger rube to those who govern us. But, at least I am happy with my life and where The Fabulous and I reside.

Well this is certainly surprising. I'm amazed he wasn't jailed indefinitely while MushHead watches the USA burn. He's too addled with dementia to play the fiddle. Charges dropped against Gold Star father arrested for heckling Biden during SOTU address

Schwalb argued that despite the fact that, as the Capitol Police noted, "disrupting the Congress and demonstrating in Congressional Buildings is illegal," Nikoui should not be charged since countless other protestors in recent years weren't.

The father of a US soldier killed in Afghanistan during Biden’s disastrous withdrawal who was arrested after heckling the president during his State of the Union address earlier this month has had his charges dropped.

Gold Star father Steve Nikoui, 51, was cleared of all wrongdoing by Washington, DC Attorney General Brian Schwalb on Tuesday. He had been charged with a misdemeanor of "crowding, obstructing or incommoding," which carries a fine of up to $500 and 90 days in prison.

User Horrified When Glassdoor, a Site for Trashing Your Boss, Starts Adding Real Names
"Glassdoor now requires your real name and will add it to older accounts without your consent...

Glassdoor's whole pitch has always been to anonymously trash talk their employers — but the site has now updated its policies and begun adding real names without consent, sparking outrage among users.

As Ars Technica reports, one Glassdoor user discovered this unfortunate change while trying to get her own information taken down.

Upon hearing about a real-name policy enacted since the company acquired the LinkedIn competitor Fishbowl, which requires user verification, Monica — a pseudonym Ars used to protect her identity — began looking into deleting her account or getting her information taken down to protect her real identity.

Monica contacted Glassdoor support, and was shocked to find that instead of helping her get her information down, the company populated her account with her real name instead, even though she repeatedly asked its customer support employees to do the exact opposite.

You will be made to believe in the climate crisis. And your tax dollars will be used to convert you.

This is another article about New York’s climate “leadership” that I fear will trickle down to a state near you. Ken Girardin from the Empire Center breaks the story of New York’s latest attempt to shore up public support for the Climate Leadership & Community Protection Act (Climate Act). This article explains that the State “is especially concerned about certain areas of the climate program, noting they should be able to “immediately address emerging unforeseen events that draw media scrutiny”.

The Climate Act established a New York “Net Zero” target (85% reduction in GHG emissions and 15% offset of emissions) by 2050. Despite the enormous impacts to energy affordability, threats to electric system reliability, and mandates affecting personal energy choices I believe many New Yorkers are unaware of the law. In 2023 transition recommendations were supposed to be implemented through regulation, Public Service Commission orders, and legislation. Not surprisingly, the aspirational schedule of the Climate Act has proven to be more difficult to implement than planned.

I have good news. And I have bad news. The good news? Pierre Delecto Mitt Romney isn't running for re-election to the US Senate. The bad news? A Romney wanna be is leading in the Maryland Senate race. Larry Hogan who aspired to be POTUS is now seeking to join the Senate.

Hogan leads Maryland Senate race by double digits, poll shows
The former governor unexpectedly entered the race last month and has been boosted by widespread name recognition in the state.

A serious question. Is there any faculty at Harvard that has an original thought?

Harvard professor Christina Cross is a rising star in the field of critical race studies. She earned a Ph.D. from the University of Michigan, secured the support of the National Science Foundation, and garnered attention from the New York Times, where she published an influential article title “The Myth of the Two-Parent Home.”

Cross’s 2019 dissertation, “The Color, Class, and Context of Family Structure and Its Association with Children’s Educational Performance,” won a slate of awards, including the American Sociological Association Dissertation Award and the ProQuest Distinguished Dissertation Award, and helped catapult her onto the Harvard faculty.

According to a new complaint filed with Harvard’s office of research integrity, however, Cross’s work is compromised by multiple instances of plagiarism, including “verbatim plagiarism, mosaic plagiarism, uncited paraphrasing, and uncited quotations from other sources.”

Mexico is doing the job America won't. It is building the wall to keep illegal immigrants from coming back.

PIEDRAS NEGRAS — As the debate in the United States continued to rage over the ongoing migrant crisis along the southern border, Mexico announced plans to begin construction on a wall to keep illegal immigrants from coming back.

The idea to build a wall along its northern border, which Mexican leaders said they came up with all by themselves, will prevent unvetted and unidentified migrants from entering the country, thereby making Mexico a safer, more secure nation.

"It's going to be a big, beautiful wall," said Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador. "We're going to build a wall and we're going to make the United States pay for it. If the U.S. thinks they can just send endless waves of Mexican gang members, criminals, rapists, and murderers into Mexico, they've got another thing coming. A nation without borders is not a nation. We've got to build a wall and make Mexico great again!"

Beach Hero: Melbourne Woman Pulls Three Unconscious Men To Shore
March 20, 2024

Today's good news story comes from Victoria, Australia.

In a display of incredible bravery, 33-year-old Brianna Hurst risked her own safety to save the lives of three drowning strangers off the coast of south-western Victoria. The events unfolded near Apollo Bay at Marengo, south of Lorne, on Sunday afternoon, when a leisurely swim turned into a life-threatening situation for four men.

Certainly Mexico has plenty of resources.

It is amazing they've done such a poor job TBH...but poverty is really associated with government corruption not the availability of resources anyway

208 I had a 6 volt 1960 VW Bus in the 70s where the starter solenoid had gone out, but you could put it neutral, lay on the ground with a screwdriver and jump between the starter terminals to start it. Easier thing was to backup a hill and just roll and pop the clutch. I eventually changed the starter, but kind of made a game of how long I was willing to put up with the weirdness. Like scoping out where to park to get the best roll. I needed treatment even then.

I was a big Syracuse fan from back in the Louie and Bowie days (70's).

And because Christian Laettner was from Buffalo. He went to the school my boys went to, and that I played against back in the day, I was a Duke fan. Actually I was a Duke fan back in the Bill Foster days (Spanarkel and Gminski), so I wasn't just a homer.

But all that's gone now, the conferences, the rivalries, the history ... they effectively killed the game.

352 Everyone tells you to buy ammo, and I agree, brass and lead is a good investment. However I'm telling you to buy silver. Gold, today reached its all time high at over $2200 per ounce, while silver is at about 1/2 its all time high of $50 per ounce. The last time I checked the silver spot price was just over $25 per ounce. With the rate that "shit for brains" is inflating the dollar you can expect silver to do nothing but climb. The people in India and China are buying enormous amounts, and the cartel of banks which has been shorting silver futures is way shy of being able to cover its shorts with actual silver. A pre 1965 dime has about $2 worth of silver in it.

There was no lesbianism, neither of us was bent in that direction. I didn't know any lesbians until I went to an all girls college, wow that was scary. I lived with the Karen progenitors. Some of them were never the same after my high school friends descended en masse for fall weekend. The next morning we discovered that the pay phone (our sole means of communication back then) had been severed from the wall.

I'm kind of jealous you have your own owl. It's not really a pet. It's an opportunist taking advantage of the situation. Maybe it follows you on walks to make sure nothing happens to its reliable food distributor. You feeding it is a hell a of a lot easier than hunting.

The weathermen were nothing like Antifa and BLM in the summer of 2020. You could discuss issues in College classes. We were busy stacking dead Communists by the tens of thousands, not electing them to office. We had nothing like the alien invasion. The lawfare against political foes did not exist. One of my neighbor families were staunch liberals. They were good friends, I even dated their daughter. We had civil discussions about politics. The wife had been president of a PTA in Maryland, Spiro Agnew was her VP. They happily went to Nixon's inauguration when Agnew invited them. All of what is happening today is literally unprecedented.

Regarding the more recent link to the Flushing squatter story that Ciampino posted up thread: one photo showed a young female squatter, with a real nice rack, leaving the scene with her face covered. You know who covers their face when the photographers are around? Hookers. Someone last night speculated here that the squatters were running the place as a cathouse, and I think that may be right.

There were reports of "construction" in the house, and a man was seen carrying a door into the house. Very possible they were subdividing bedrooms into cubicles to increase their uh, capacity. And also explains why the squatters fled. All the publicity is bad for business; the cathouse customers won't show up if cameras are rolling.

432 In re Thomas Friedman, I recall an up-and-coming academic star who despised an older, tenured professor with a decent list of publications. The future star of academe told our entire class at that particular SEC-affiliated university that the older guy was "the most undeserving person ever." (Full disclosure here - the allegedly undeserving guy helped me nail my first decent-paying job in a substantial way, so I obviously disagree with that assessment of the fellow.)

The academic whose star was ascendant was sorely mistaken. Thomas Friedman is the most undeserving person ever. His columns, his books, his commentary are the most inane and shallow pieces of work that one would only expect to find in a developmental English class. He fails the first test of true scholarship - he doesn't even know what he doesn't know. Surely this has to be an open secret among the high-level media outlets, one would have to think, but we are talking about current media, so...

441 To clarify my last comment above, I don't have any dislike for Friedman, unless or until a security or diplomatic was developed based on his superficial and shallow reading of developing trends on either a regional or global level. But judging by the people I've had the privilege to know who deal in such matters, they've got far more academic knowledge and professional experience than Friedman could ever attain, even if he applied himself, which he manifestly doesn't.

No, no dislike for the man, nor even contempt - just pity for someone so far out of his depth with no one being willing to set him straight.

That's the crux of the biscuit: D.E.I., where plagiarism is a white man's crime. So is cheating, which includes plagiarism. They also cannot stand academic study results which go against the evil white man oppressor woke narrative.

Posted by: RickZ at March 21, 2024 02:59 AM (emlEe)

464 The various Studies" fields actually had a promising beginning - they were drawing from the French Annales school of historical analysis, which sought to synthesize insights from as many respectable disciplines as possible.

Middle Eastern Studies, for example, began as a truly interdisciplinary field, where economists, archaeologists, ethnographers, political scientists, historians and sociologists came together to flesh out as full a picture of SW Asia as could possibly be obtained. The door was open to even more academic specialists who felt they could offer further refinement.

New disciplines arose, in conjunction with emerging technologies, an example of this being cliometrics. Scholars had to master the relevant languages of the region, and there was a high rigor expected of any research conducted. For a brief time, it was an exciting field that shaped understanding about a world region that had before been somewhat of an enigma.

The Studies programs you see now are the direct result of people breaching the perimeter of genuine scholarly endeavor and perverting it to their contemptible ends.
