8 Dreaming about? Buying my first house once I retire. Realtor has one that, if I were with an agent and she showed me this one, my response would be, "Let's do it. What's the next step?"

Actually there are several I like. But this particular one, in a historic district of Evansville, IN, ticks a *lot* of boxes for me.

Gin Martinis are an acquired taste. Mostly gin with some saltiness from olives. Green olives. With pimento.

Oh... and a hint of dry Vermouth.

Vodka Martinis are the devil's work and worthless.

But... if you do work through the initial "taste" of them they are quite nice. Made in small, single serving quantities. Like maybe 6 oz.

Depending on where you go to, DMLW, you can get more exotic martinis than just the vodka, vermouth variety. I don't like those ether, but I had a chocolatey/caramel tasting one the other night that included some chocolate liqueur and a caramel schnaps thing and vodka and it was quite good.

46 Almost forgot. I saw a pretty cool antenna design this morning. Guy in Mesa, AZ is 3D printing an almost fishing reel looking body that the antenna is in. It has a hand crank on one side and an SO239 on the other, with the balun inside the body. When you want to use it just pull the wire out of the reel and string it up. When you're done the wire just winds back into the body. Pretty neat all-in-one setup. The person showing the one he'd bought said the builder has dipole and EFHW designs, but then proceeded not to give any contact info.

49 After the discussion about fountain pens last week, I ordered a Conklin Mark Twain crescent feed with a fine nib. It's a metal body and a bit heavier than I expected. Using the century-plus old technology is a hoot.

This is the first new fountain pen I've bought in years and I forgot about the break-in period where the nib smooths out with use. I'm using Diamine Ancient Copper ink which is a nice color.

52 Today I started repairing an old JD RX75 riding mower that I inherited a couple of decades ago. I remember it running as recently as 10 years ago. Put fuel and a new battery in it, turned the key and nothing happened. I shorted the solenoid and it kicked so probably one of the many safety interlocks is not working. Tomorrow I will bypass all the safeties like a real man.

54 Back in the 50s in Italian schools Grade to Middle, dip pens were still in use with inkwells built into the desks. Very cheap, mainly wooden holder with removable nib for replacement. I remember on one occasion this kid's nib was rusted stuck onto the holder so he used his teeth to hold it and pulled with both ends. The nib came off but he swallowed it. He turned white as a sheet in shock; probably thought he was going to die. His Mum took him to the doctor who told him no problem you'll just pass it in a day or two.

58 51 ... Notsothoreau,
The Conklin has a good, relatively flexible nib but I have better nibs on my Pelikan pens. I suspect a medium nib would be smoother than the fine size. I'm going to use it for all my writing for a while and see if it smooths out more. The reviews indicated that would be needed. I'm happy with it since I got it, on clearance, for the retro style and filler mechanism.

I went to the antique tractor show in Apache Junction today. They had a silent auction on a huge lot of stuff from a deceased local collector to benefit the tractor club. I got a little 1930's or '40's hand grinder made of Bakelite. Like a Dremel, but a different maker. And a Toro Flymo lawn mower, that works as a hovercraft. No eels.

66 55 ... Hi Alizarin Crimson,

It will be a writing pen. Tried some sketching with it but it's a bit heavy for my level of control. However, it inspired me to get out one of the Lamy Safari pens for sketching which had better results and was a lot of fun. Pen and ink drawing is attracting me lately as an alternative to dry media, although not being able to erase is still daunting. But the look on paper is so different I will keep trying. To my surprise, I'm enjoying it more than the Pigma fineliners I've played with.

One aspect of the new pen and getting used to it is I'm more aware of my handwriting and I'm enjoying trying to do better forming letters. That's an art all by itself.

Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at March 09, 2024 05:54 PM

It doesn't. The Arduino was a basic microcontroller and a form factor that you could design peripheral hardware (called "shields") for and an IDE that you could use to program it. It really targets smaller tasks to be programmed essentially at the level of the bare metal. The Raspberry Pi is a SBC that was designed to run Linux and drive a multimedia kiosk, which got adopted for a bunch of embedded controller purposes because it was cheap.

So, they don't share the tools or the form factor or peripherals or even the conceptual space. They're kinda the same size, though. If you're not heavily concerned about the details they might appear to be almost the same thing.

78 You don't have to live in the city for medical care. In these rural areas, there can be a clinic and hospital for the surrounding area. This town, less than 2k has a clinic and hospital. I went to the walk in clinic, to the other side for an X-ray and back again. I had better care than at the city I was in before. And there is a transit service in town.

85 A couple of YT channels I found this week about drawing and art generally.

Drawing and Painting - The Virtual Instructor. This guy is an excellent teacher.

Pete Beard. His channel is all about illustrators, especially classical ones. There are a couple hundred videos that cover from Gustave Dore to Howard Pyle to modern illustrators. They are very informative. For instance, I had no idea that Howard Pyle did more styles than his Robin Hood and King Arthur stuff. He was much more varied and creative.

But beware! These channels can soak up all your free time.

I've been having fun matching some of his lower notes. (Yeah, I can do a decent string bass and tuba impression.) No one outside the house can hear me and Mrs. JTB is tolerant and probably amused.

For a good example of what Castelucci can do with his voice and arranging, check out his Far Over the Misty Mountains video on YT. Spoiler: all the characters are Geoff.

101 AOP. How do you adjust the mowing height on this flying mower?
Posted by: Ronster at March 09, 2024 06:15 PM (X/vd3)

Thick shim washers between the blade and the lift fan. Maybe an inch of range, with two half-inch shims. My father was a Toro dealer for years, and sold a few of them. We used one at home for a while. You don't push them like a wheeled mower; you walk slowly and swing it in a big arc ahead of you, and cut an 8-foot swath as you go. Because it is very low at the edges, you can get under overhanging bushes and hedges quite nicely.

Better give the paint shop a call on Monday. A reputable shop should have insurance to cover the cost of damages due to their fuckup. Vehicle hoods are supposed to have a safety latch to prevent that from happening, even if the primary latch fails.

158 That usually destroys the hood, too, and the paint on the front of the roof.

AOP and I know of one particular model, one of the best looking cars on the road, that was notorious for a little-bitty misalignment of the hood hook causing just this. Judges who see these cars at shows know just where to look for evidence of the repair, because they've seen it a lot. "Everybody" knows they're prone to it, but most don't resolve to install the well-known fixes until they see the hood move. That's often just one hour too late.

161 Raspberry Pi is pretty much a single-board Linux box (w/ network, usb, HDMI video) with a lot of programmable digital i/o pins to connect to stuff; but only digital.

Arduino is a lot more of a single-task microcontroller, but it's one (huge & unique) feature: analog inputs! everything in the real world is analog, so easy to use with simple sensors. It has digital i/o too, and built-in PWM.

I tend to use Arduino more because of that, maybe also because the programming UI is kind of like C, at which I am fluent.
Pi is oriented toward Python, at which I am not so much.
