Rubens Two Satyrs.jpg

Two Satyrs
Peter Paul Rubens

Satyrs were woodland creatures from ancient Greek mythology. Early depictions were of wild and playful human-like creatures with tails. By the era following Alexander the Great, satyrs had evolved into the more familiar man-goat form associated with debauchery and the wine god Dionysus. This is the image that has been passed down through Western culture to today.

In this work, Peter Paul Rubens presents this creature in all his debased, debauched glory. The figure in front stares full-on at me with this unsettling grin. It’s the cringy type of grin a drunk gives you from across a bar. His cheeks and nose are red from too much drinking and his eyes are watery. In fact, he looks like he is having a hard time focusing on me. His hair and beard are wild and unkempt, with a crown made of grape vines (I think) on his head. He looks barbaric and unruly.

The figure in back tones down the work some. To me, he looks unserious and is just hanging out with no real purpose. In profile, he guzzles wine from a cup, chugging it so fast, some of it spills from his mouth. He is clownish and unserious. In fact, he is so disinterested in anything but his drink, I wondered what would happen to the work if I mentally erased him. It changed the painting dramatically.

Satyrs were sex-fiends that symbolized hedonism and carnal satisfaction. Today, a man with an insatiable sexual desire is said to have satyrism. The front satyr becomes much more menacing when I remove his companion. His nearly nude, muscular body shows off a powerful figure. The animal skin covering makes him wild and earthy. And then there’s that stare. I can’t stop looking at him – especially his eyes. His left eye, in shadow, catches the light, giving it an eerie glow. This reminds me of the publicity poster for The Terminator with its glowing red eye. I feel uneasy around him.

My opinion of this work completely changed while writing this essay. At first, I thought Two Satyrs goofy and light-hearted. Now I think it’s creepy.

16 For some reason I think Western movies when I look at this. The one in front, if you ignore the horns, looks like a miner let loose in the town saloon. He hasn't shaved in a month, and he's eyeing the saloon girl at the end of the bar.

The other looks like Lee Van Cleef! The shape of his nose and that nostril are just like the For a Few Dollars More actor's.

53 Curated from Wiki:

In Greek mythology, a satyr is a male nature spirit with ears and a tail resembling those of a horse, as well as a permanent, exaggerated erection. Comically hideous, they have mane-like hair, bestial faces, and snub noses and they always are shown naked. Satyrs were characterized by their ribaldry and were known as lovers of wine, music, dancing, and women. They often attempted to seduce or rape nymphs and mortal women alike, usually with little success. They are sometimes shown masturbating or engaging in bestiality.

One of the amazing things about Branch Covidians is that they aggressively did not want to know anything about the experimental gene therapy they were taking.

I never met a single one that would say something like "I read the pros and cons in detail from both sides and looked at the available data and chose to take it" it was always just "I respect the authorities."

I don't trust the feral government to accurately assesses whether the sun will rise in the morning but these people literally trusted them with their lives.

159 Maybe Trump has learned? RNC to add new lawyers focusing on claims of election fraud - including one key figure from 2020 challenges. Source: CNN Politics The RNC, now under the control of Trump, is bringing on a slate of new lawyers who will focus intensely on election fraud, an issue Trump has remained fixated on.

The lawyers “will initiate battle on election integrity from an offensive instead of defensive posture,” Chris LaCivita, Trump’s co-campaign manager and newly instated RNC Chief of Staff, told CNN.

162 ...there exists a shadowy figure that has been haunting the folklore of Central European Christmas festivities for centuries – Krampus. This horned, demonic companion to St. Nicholas has captured the imagination of many, but where did this malevolent character originate?

The Ancient Roots
The tale of Krampus finds its roots in pre-Christian Alpine traditions, where the winter solstice was celebrated with various rituals to ward off evil spirits. One such figure, similar to Krampus, was the Norse mythical creature known as the "Yule Goat," believed to accompany the god Thor. This ancient pagan influence laid the groundwork for the emergence of Krampus in later centuries.

The Christian Connection
As Christianity spread across Europe, pagan traditions often merged with Christian holidays to ease the transition for the local populations. In the case of Krampus, his introduction to Christmas is believed to be a counterbalance to St. Nicholas. While St. Nicholas rewarded good children, Krampus was tasked with punishing the naughty ones, serving as a reminder of the consequences of misbehavior

183 ok the two Peters are different:

Der Struwwelpeter ("shock-headed Peter") is an 1845 German children's book written and illustrated by Heinrich Hoffmann. It comprises ten illustrated and rhymed stories, mostly about children. Each cautionary tale has a clear moral lesson that demonstrates the disastrous consequences of misbehavior in an exaggerated way. The title of the first story provides the title of the whole book. Der Struwwelpeter is one of the earliest books for children that combines visual and verbal narratives in a book format, and is considered a precursor to comic books.
Der Struwwelpeter is known for introducing the villainous character of the Tailor (or Scissorman) to Western literature. Some researchers now see the stories in the book as illustrations of modern child mental disorders.

Obviously there are a lot of young, honestly just ignorant leftists

But...you have to remember in general to the left that anything they said yesterday has no hold on them today.

So...the people that screamed about Trump stealing the 2016 election can make statements like this today and not see it as hypocrisy.

Why? Oh they know Biden stole the 2020 election and may or may not actually believe Trump stole the 2016 election but their statements here should really be understood as "Biden should have won the election because I wanted him to, and Trump should not have because I did want him to"

190 Saw an interesting thing on yooToob.

Showed a breakdown of shifts either to Dems or Reps. This was between 2020 exit polls and current polls.

White college grads are moving to Dems even more. 65+ are as well. On the other hand 18-29, 30-44, 45-64, Hispanics and Blacks are all moving to Reps. And by quite a bit for Hispanics and Blacks in particular.

However the two groups moving to Dems are the most reliable voters. The two groups most moving to Reps are unreliable voters.

So overall it’s kind of a wash.

At 53 he married a second time, a 16 year old girl. The National Gallery, in part, "Rubens was clearly bowled over by his new wife with whom he had five children, and she figures in numerous portraits, including a version of 'The Judgment of Paris' in which she appears as Venus." 341 Here's what little I've learned about the Haiti situation.

The cannibal warlord (Barbecue) is a former cop, and the most visible to Western media, and has the advantage of controlling the port and fuel terminal, but is apparently the least powerful on paper of the big three warlords.

The rapper warlord (Izo) has independent access to the actual sea lanes coming into the port, and his own makeshift "ports" that allow him to control the all-important drug trade.

The rebel warlord (Phillippe) is also a former cop, and a professional militant insurgent, with the best trained forces. He has his eye on the Presidency. At one point he won a Senate seat, but the US pulled the extradition card over his involvement in the drug trade during his cop days, and had him arrested and flown to the States just days before he could be sworn in.

That tells me he is the one the State Department dislikes the most, and therefore probably the best outcome Haiti can hope for in this mess.

357 AP, Washington News, yesterday afternoon
Pentagon will give Ukraine $300 million in weapons even as it lacks funds to replenish US stockpile

(In part) WASHINGTON (AP) — The Pentagon will rush about $300 million in weapons to Ukraine after finding some cost savings in its contracts, even though the military remains deeply overdrawn and needs at least $10 billion to replenish all the weapons it has pulled from its stocks to help Kyiv in its desperate fight against Russia, the White House announced Tuesday.

It’s the Pentagon’s first announced security package for Ukraine since December, when it acknowledged it was out of replenishment funds. It wasn’t until recent days that officials publicly acknowledged they weren’t just out of money to buy replacement weapons, they are $10 billion overdrawn."

What can possibly be the plan for this country, especially given a multitude of controlling treaties? /R

I mean, Pan's Labyrinth was pretty trippy, and if anyone can raise the dead to star in their movie Guillermo del Toro could - as opposed to Stanley Kubrick who would kill actors to fulfil their role, only to resurrect them later for the 47th shot.
