The Classical Saturday Morning Coffee Break & Prayer Revival

coffee spider.jpg

(Musical selection H/T Isophorone)

***

Good morning Horde. Hopefully you don't find any type of foreign objects in your coffee mug this fine morning.

Before we enter the Prayer Revival just a few housekeeping matters to take care of. (Rulz for those of you in Sayner.)

1) This is an open thread, feel free to lurk, opine and/or bloviate away.
2) Please wipe your feet off on the door mat and be nice to one another.
3) Running with sharp objects? Go ahead, no sympathy to be found here.
4) Have a nice weekend.

***

Drinking from a scaley coffee pot or tea kettle? Do you feel lucky, well do you caffeine drinker?

Do I really need to descale my coffeepot and teakettle?

If like so many people your day begins with a jolt of caffeine, you undoubtably have a teakettle or coffee maker in your kitchen. And if you’ve ever looked closely at them while making up your morning brew, you may have noticed a crust or film inside. As it turns out, that annoying-to-clean buildup is composed of minerals from your water, and it's what happens when you aren't following your user manual (now, where did you put that thing?) and regularly descaling your kettle or coffeepot. But is it bad for your health? And can it affect how your beloved cup of joe (or bedtime chamomile tea) tastes? Here's what experts say.

AoSHQ Weekly Prayer List

Please submit any prayer requests to me, “Annie’s Stew” at apaslo atsign hotmail dot com. Prayer requests are generally removed after four weeks unless we receive an update.

Prayer Requests:

2/3 -Washington Nearsider has been and remains sincerely grateful for the prayers and well-wishes of the Horde. He has withdrawn his TSP and has enough money left to get through late March – early April. He will accrue debt with the custody hearings which begin 3/6. He has 3 interviews scheduled for the week of 2/5. He is also attempting to expand his custom model building services to bring in additional income by leaning on 20 years of experience building models of all kinds: building planes, tanks, ships, etc. Please contact him through the comments or email Annie’s Stew, and she can send you his direct contact information. He sends his thanks for his daily dose of sanity in an otherwise crazy world, and for the constant stream of wonderful Fani Willis euphemisms.
2/28 Update – Washington Nearsider has learned that this coming Wednesday, he is likely to lose full custody of his two young children until he can replace the salary he lost after being removed from his federal position. While he is still pursuing a higher-level job, he has started working at the local Home Depot, more to keep his children insured than for the wages. He has several more interviews over the coming week or so and hopes that at least one of them will pan out. His savings will run out in about three weeks, and then things have the potential to become extremely difficult; however, three weeks is three weeks, and anything could happen between now and then.

1/20 – Jewells said she has spent the last 2 days recovering from the latest chemo treatment. Praise God, it has gone much better. She still had pain, but was able to manage it with oxy, but it makes her very weak.
2/15 – Jewells has an update that the PET scan showed great results, and her MRI showed no cancer!

2/3 – Teresa in Fort Worth would appreciate prayers for Leigh, the director of a school for students of all ages with Down Syndrome. Leigh has been diagnosed with Soft Tissue Sarcoma. The tumor was removed this week, and they think they got all of it. Leigh would appreciate the prayers.
2/17 Update – The mass in Leigh’s shoulder is benign, and she does NOT have soft tissue sarcoma. She thanks everyone for their prayers on her behalf.

2/3 – Reforger asked for prayers for his Coworker, “D”, a widowed mom of 4 who is having a rough time with daughter #1. The daughter is skipping school, was caught 3 times and now police and social workers are involved. “D” is beside herself. She is having to miss work (and pay) to do probation stuff and keep appointments with “therapists”.
2/10 Update – Reforger reports that Coworker “D” and her daughter are doing better. He also relayed a funny story that ended up with him being able to bless “D” with another $200!
3/2 Update – Coworker D’s daughter had to be incarcerated. She went nuts, trashed her room, broke things, and even kicked a cop. She could use a lot of prayers.

2/3 – Polliwog the ‘Ette would appreciate prayers for Inspector’s back pain. It’s been bad enough that he’s had to admit it’s a problem. It also keeps him from sleeping or being able to do even mild exercise, both of which are important for managing his blood pressure. They’d appreciate prayers for complete healing, but also wisdom on how to prevent future problems.
2/10 Update – As soon as she asked for prayers, God brought to mind something that helped Inspector the last time, but they’d forgotten to try. His back is substantially better, and he’s become convinced that it’s the sitting, not the exercise, that causes problems, and that is also a victory.

2/3 – Fenelon Spoke asked for “P”, who needs prayers for his return to faith as a Christian. Also, prayers for Pam, who needs continued healing after a pacemaker insertion, are appreciated.
2/24 Update – Please keep praying for “P” and his faith.

2/8 – It’s me, Donna, asked for prayers after some bad lab tests. It turns out it’s not as bad as thought and easily treated. Thanks so much for the prayers.

2/10 – Sock Monkey asked for prayers for his BIL, who woke up 2/9 with no feeling in his legs and unable to walk. After a lengthy visit to the ER, a growth was discovered on his spine. Doctors were only able to remove part of it during an 8.5 hour surgery on 2/10. The mass is probably cancerous, but they don’t know what type. His prognosis for walking again is not high. The family would appreciate prayers for healing, strength, and comfort.

2/10 - Mindful webworker asked for prayers for a dear, long-time family friend, Levi, who is in a desperate, dangerous state of distress and is an immediate threat to himself and others. Please send up prayers that he can swiftly be freed from the demons that confuse his mind and torture his soul, and that his family would be protected, and that he would return to Jesus.

2/10 – Martini Farmer asked for prayers for his son, who lost his job this past week due to DEI.

2/10 – Berserker-Dragonheads Division is in the hospital. He had a cardiac cath, then was sent straight in for bypass surgery.
2/11 Update – He had 2 arteries 100% blocked, 1 that was 95%, and another that was 80%. So he had a quad. He says the hospital and staff are great.
3/2 Update – He is healing well ahead of schedule.

2/17 – Muldoon humbly asks for prayers for his daughter Michele, for healing. She has suffered for years from severe debilitating migraines that have resulted in her becoming largely withdrawn from society.

2/20 – Lady in Black requested prayers for her stepmother, Bonnie. She was diagnosed with breast cancer 9 years ago. About 2 years ago, it came back and she had a mastectomy. Now she has a lump showing in her lung and is getting ready to have a biopsy. She is depressed and very worried. Any prayers for her would be greatly appreciated.

2/21 – TecumsehTea sends many thanks for the prayers for Pastor Joe. He had his post-surgical followup today. Stitches are out, no radiation or other treatments are needed. In 3 months he will have another MRI.

2/21 – Prayers for the family and friends who mourn the loss of GnuBreed.

2/24 – FenelonSpoke asked for prayers for Joanne, who has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, stage 4. Prayers are also needed for Karen, Joanne’s niece, who will have to manage things for Joanne (as the closest family member).

2/26 – Alex the Chick reported that Bandersnatch passed away last night.

2/27 – rhennigantx asked for prayers for his friend Tim, who had a stroke on Sunday.

2/29 – DaveT asks for prayers. We had prayed in the past for him, as he was trying to save his cats and his home from repossession (due to a relative who burned the family home with debt). DaveT is over 65 and is not able to work much. The cats are elderly and one is blind, and the only family he has. Things had turned around and it looked like he was going to be fine last summer, but now a new judge is on the case and seems to want to kick DaveT and the cats out of the house. Please pray. If anyone wants to contribute, Annie’s Stew has the details of his givesendgo.

3/2 – Sa: tolle adversarium et afflige inimicum at asked for prayers for those affected by the Panhandle wildfires. Many still own their land, but literally nothing else.

3/2 – Eromero thanked the Lord for the many blessings already received, for placing each of us on His path, and for the strength to resist temptation, and for Jesus, who paid for our sins.

3/2 – Matthew Kant Cipher asked for prayers for his SIL, whose brother (late forties) died suddenly/unexpectedly this week.

3/2 – FortWorthMike sent some updates. The good news is that his grand niece, who we prayed for when she was in need of a kidney transplant, celebrated her 5th birthday. She is doing well. She is still trying to learn to eat, as she was tube fed since birth. She has a long journey, but the kid is amazing and FortWorthMike attributes it to the miracle of our prayers finding her a donor. The bad news is, his MIL suffered a fall several months back. He got her through the broken bones, but they found cancer. She has been through chemo and radiation. As she is 87, it took a lot out of her. She could use prayers for strength and healing.

3/2 – Vmom posted and asked for prayers for her pup, who had emergency surgery a couple of weeks ago. He popped a couple of stitches and has to wear the cone for a few more weeks. Also, her husband is having issues recovering from Covid.

3/2 – Artruen asked for prayers for his sister. Her son “Mick” was killed on his motorcycle a few weeks ago on his way to church. Mick was a good man: a proud US Marine (three tours in hot zones), proud American, proud Texan, proud father of two beautiful children. He lived hard and fast and is greatly missed.

3/2 – Fox2! Asked for prayers for Margaret K (to overcome alcoholism), Brooke V (to watch over her, a young woman from a broken family), Janet K (to guide and watch over her and her family).

3/3 – Commissar of Plenty and Lysenkoism in Solidarity with the Struggle to maintain Moron standards asked for prayers as he is scared to death of some much-needed surgery. Pain, healing, iyiyi! Even the red tape involved in scheduling. Thank you all again!

For submission guidelines and other relevant info, please contact Annie's Stew, who is managing the prayer list. You can contact her at apaslo at-sign hotmail dot com. If you see a prayer request posted in a thread comment, feel free to copy and paste it and e-mail it to Annie's Stew. She tries to keep up with the requests in the threads, but she's not here all of the time, so she may not see it unless you e-mail it to her. Please note: Prayer requests are generally removed after four weeks or so unless we receive an update.

2 Corinthians 4:8-9

12 At the start of this year, I felt a strange sense of optimism, and it's persisting in spite - or I think because of - the ongoing chaos around us. The old system was unsustainable, and it was also impossible to fix it within the existing framework.

We should therefore expect upheaval and disorder, and use these thing to inspire us to repent and redirect our thoughts and energies to God, rather than politics. None of us can influence the Big Things, of which there are many. It's like a machine whose bearings are starting wear - the best thing to do is just let it work itself to pieces.

20 What will be said to spiders as food? But these form an article in the list of the Bushman’s dainties in South Africa, and the inhabitants of New Caledonia, seek for, and eat with avidity, large quantities of a spider nearly an inch long, which they roast over the fire. Even individuals amongst the more polished nations of Europe are recorded as having a similar taste; so that if you could rise above vulgar prejudices, you would in all probability find them a most delicate morsel. If you require precedents, Reaumur tells us of a young lady, who, when she walked in her grounds, never saw a spider that she did not take and crunch upon the spot. Another female, the celebrated Anna Maria Schurman, used to eat them like nuts, which she affirmed they much resembled in taste, excusing her propensity by saying that she was born under the sign Scorpio.

23 There once were accepted verities that a majority of voters believed in, even if never actually true.

Democrats are well-intentioned and put the interests of the little guy first. Blacks and other minorities especially.

Republicans are the party of the Country Club and Owner Class. Even when they're right about something they have a Black Heart.

Individual media outlets can be biased but the competition in revealing Holy Shit Headlines keeps them collectively honest and the people infomed. "There's always the WSJ to offset the NYT."

Big companies are driven solely by profit, and hence are Evil. (Ignore that they only make a profit by giving people what they want, either well done or cheaply, or both).

People are waking up that none of these are true. There's a potentially large political realignment coming. Let us pray ...

My father will not accept that Big Media covers up stories harmful to their narrative. He's convinced that they're all thirsty for the scoop. Yeah, maybe 40 years ago, but certainly not now.

It is interesting to look back at other elections and see how much things have changed. Yes, the press leaned Democrat and favored them in tone of coverage, but they turned on Carter viciously because he was so incompetent. They weren't willing to see the nation broken and humiliated simply because of politics.

Now they'd burn it all down so long as their side wins.

As faith fades, the demons have more freedom of action, and we're seeing the results.

34 I wonder why the EU can stand up to Alphabet Corp, but the US can't. I'm sure they're every bit as "generous" in Brussels as they are in DC, and the dispute was relatively minor, but it was still a dispute, and the anti-Alphabet faction won. In the US, there would never have been a dispute in the first place, and if in some alternate dimension a faction of our government turned on Alphabet, it would be crushed like a bug.

My theory is that it's a combination of two things, and they both boil down to "kompromat," because the usual enormous bribes didn't work in this case, either.

1.) As corrupt as the EUrocracy is, and as personally vile as its factors may be, it is so much less vile and corrupt than ours that the usual blackmail and intimidation tactics don't work nearly as well - Alphabet doesn't have the goods on every single one of them, because some of them are actually, somehow, relatively "clean."

2.) They are more loyal to their own faction, and won't sell each other out to Alphabet nearly as readily - so Alphabet can't 100% count on those tactics being effective, where they could be leveraged.

If you pray for the thing and don't get it, it's disappointing. If you pray humbly for guidance and the larger picture (I need "a job" not "this job"), you'll be happier.

In the mean time, contemplate why you are where you are, because there is also a purpose behind that.

40 Spider Coffee FTW!

One time after being overseas and out in the boonies for a few months I came home and went to my sister's house to hang and swim in the pool. I jumped in the pool and felt something shift in my head and ear hole. I cocked my head to the side and a big old brown spider flopped out, about the size of a JFK half dollar.

Mr Smith:
It is not from the benevolence of the butcher, the brewer, or the baker, that we expect our dinner, but from their regard to their own interest. We address ourselves, not to their humanity but to their self-love, and never talk to them of our own necessities but of their advantages. Nobody but a beggar chuses to depend chiefly upon the benevolence of his fellow-citizens.

I've got news for you: the same thing happens inside your hot water heater.

And that's why you heat cold water for cooking and making coffee.

There has been a serious erosion in competence across the board. People simply aren't as dedicated or diligent as they used to be. There's very much as "hey, I did enough, and you're traumatizing me" mentality.

The whole actions --> consequences relationship has been gravely weakened. Engineering is just the most obvious form of failure, but it's happening everywhere.

Thank you. I come here in part to share faith with others, but also to remind myself to practice what I preach. I lost an auction last week and was PISSED. The usual story, high bid, big cushion, 40 minutes left and zing! Some unrated user kicked of a bidding war.

Stewed on it for a few hours, then let it go because it simply wasn't meant to be. I recognized that I had set parameters that weren't meant and maybe the winner's need was greater than mine. Who knows?

So I went looking and found a much, much better deal that otherwise I would have missed. I approached that with humility and also restraint, because as the clock wound down I had to admit that I had no right to EVER win an auction, it's just stuff. Useful stuff, but stuff all the same. And I was actually ashamed of my wrath, which is partly why I confess it here.

I have a transparent kettle and tea steeper. Around here, and in a lot of places, the scale is calcium carbonate. To get rid of it, I use white vinegar diluted with about as much water as vinegar. The acidity of the vinegar makes the scale more soluble in water.

You can just leave it overnight, but if you're in a hurry heat will increase the rate of the scale dissolving and the pH of the vinegar offsets the reduction in solubility at high temperatures that makes the scale form in the first place.

Removing the scale doesn't improve the quality of the water, it just makes the kettle work better.

112 It's been a while since I did a Catholic Church update, but here goes for those who care. Fideles Supplicans (which declared it okay to bless sinful couples) continues to bite Pope Francis in his crozier. Twenty-plus bishops conferences (including all of Africa) have rejected it, protests continue to mount and last week the Coptic Orthodox Church decided to jump into the debate.

For those who don't know, the Copts have been in schism with Rome (and Constantinople) since AD 451. Over the last 20 years, a series of goodwill measures have taken place, most recently in a joint canonization ceremony for Egyptian Christians martyred by ISIS. This really looked like a huge win for Francis' pontificate, something to offset all the other disappointments.

Well, turns out the Copts have a problem with blessing sin, so they announced a halt to any further dialog because of it, and will be reviewing the path they've taken to get to this point. This is a massive humiliation, and a likely harbinger of the Eastern Orthodox taking similar action.

123 Making matters worse, the source of the letter, Cardinal Fernandez has himself created scandal by authoring a book of religiously-based sexual fantasies. The sensible thing would be to have him step down, and rescind the letter, but I doubt that will happen. Francis has consistently shown a lack of humility or self-awareness.

What must certainly gall him is the knowledge that this will almost certainly be done by his successor, so his resistance is ultimately futile, and only further damages his legacy.

He wrote a book more than 20 years ago exploring sexuality and faith, but not in a Theology of the Body way, but using explicit pornographic language. This was known to Pope Francis before his appointment, when it became public, no action was taken. So the head of the Vatican theology dept. is a known perv.

Some think this discredits the Church, but it only discredits Francis. The Church is outraged by it, and things like this push the faithful deeper into orthodoxy. It's like his fanatical war on the Traditional Latin Mass. What was once a curiosity is now a hot ticket, particularly among young people.

Cardinal Zen has circulated an anonymous document outlining what the next pope must do, and what characteristic he must possess. It's got to be rough to have senior Church leaders publicly announced they're done with you and it's time to talk about what happens after you're dead.

155 We're house-hunting this weekend, which is one of my least favorite activities in the world. I know now is not a great time to buy, what with the inflated prices and interest rates, but our current dwelling isn't suiting us too well and I'm not sure the market will ever improve. I could drop the price of a new house into renovating our current one and still not like it, so that's not an option. Of course, my idea home would be a bunker in the middle of nowhere, but I doubt I can convince wife and kiddo to go full survivalist.

186 135 Hard and soft water (here comes the Inorganic Chemistry lecture).
Soft water contains little or no dissolved calcium or magnesium salts so does not create scale in the long term.
Hard water comes in two types: temporarily hard and permanently hard.
Permanently hard: contains calcium sulfate (from water percolating over gypsum-containing rocks) which unlike most chemicals, is less soluble in hot water than in cold so it precipitates out in boiling water and produces scale.
Temporarily hard: CO2 in water percolating through limestone dissolves the calcium carbonate and forms soluble calcium bicarbonate. When this water is heated the bicarbonate decomposes back to CO2 and calcium carbonate which becomes scale. The water is now 'softer'.
Vinegar will dissolve both scales, the carbonate will fizz with the vinegar.

Yes, women were never second-class citizens; there was a male sphere and a female sphere. Then women decided that the male sphere was more interesting, and they demanded entrance while at the same time insisting that their sphere remained theirs.

This was ultimately unworkable, and now they've lost their sphere and have to compete against men in both.

The old arrangement was more workable and sustainable. The current one is leading to depopulation and societal collapse.

Human evolution being what it is, there's no doubt if the species lasts long enough, our modern tech will change the way our brains work, and memory will be one of the first things we lose.

I do wonder then, if people didn't have clocks before, or they weren't used by most people to order their days, how have we changed human functioning with them?

Is that part of the reason we're so f'd up as a species? Because too many people are running around, chasing the clock instead of doing what naturally comes with the rhythm of the day?

Those few times in my life when I wasn't chasing a clock, I noticed I was staying up later, getting up closer to noon.

I don't know if that means it's my natural cycle, but in those times I wasn't going to have sunlight as an influence, nor would the darkness have been, because I was indoors. Still, I wonder.

Takes me back to when we were kids, taking a weekend (or longer), staying in the middle of nowhere... one time we came home, older siblings weren't going with us on those trips, one of my sisters comes outside as we're getting home, tells us about a neighborhood tragedy, where someone had been accidentally shot and killed.

First time it ever occurred to me that a person roughly around my age could die. And it changed after the fact, my whole view of the week we had away from it all.

We used to call that camping.
I built my own place it the field behind my house when I was 7. Hole in the ground with a piece of old plywood on it. Ran away one day and that's where I went. So my dad (knowing right were I was) ran away too. Came out and climbed into my hole and had a heart to heart with me. Talked for an hour or so.
Told me I could stay if I wanted to and left. I was home about 5 minutes later.

Oh, I was outraged, because he would have had the pony and I would have wound up in a stable somewhere.

foolish me, I wasn't thinking that if I lived in a stable there would have been all sorts of ponies there.

Considering all the bloodthirsty murderers and wife beaters DeNiro has played, I think that says quite a bit about what he thinks is good.

I never wanted a pony. My aunt, who is only 12 years older than me, had a horse and did the show-jumping stuff as a teenager, so I have vague early memories of mud and trying to avoid falling down in the horse dung. Unhappy memories.

Later on a friend bought a farm, got some horses so his third wife could do dressage, offered to teach me to ride. Not my cup tea. When she left him, he sold the horses, pulled down the fences and put up a shooting range.

372 Re: Europe and techlords, one thing I'll give the Euros for is that they actually enforce their laws. The EU charter is like 10,000 pages long so everything's illegal, but if you're not a good little serf there WILL be consequences even/especially if you're loaded. In America, everything's illegal as well but everything is also negotiable and ultimately decided by lawyers and lobbyists. Such an arrangement favors the techlord approach of doing whatever feels good at the time and sorting it out with the authorities later if called on it.

Also, trade protectionism isn't a dirty word over there like it is here so there's nothing objectionable about throwing the book at foreign interlopers to give the local guy a fighting chance.

tl, dr: EU is the Fourth Reich and it is ruled by the noble houses of Siemens and Bosch.

387 It seems like starting in the eighties maybe, all advertisements turned to inspiring fear of dying or fear of missing out.
Because I blame everything on the lawyers, I have decided it's because positive assertions can be sued for reliance upon, whereas fearfulness is all on the viewer.

That's around the time where lawyers and drug companies were finally permitted to advertise in the mass media. Before that time, lawyers were permitted to place ads in the Yellow Pages. No advertising in mass media either for Pharmaceutical companies.

So, off to buy a new battery.
