Wednesday Morning Rant

They Can't Stop

America's media complex is a vast system committed solely and entirely to the purpose of creating artistically and creatively bankrupt propaganda. Shocking, I know. There have been some signs of a grudging acknowledgment of Hollywood failure recently, from Marvel's "retooling" to Amazon deciding that the audience's preferences might matter after all. There are some signs of that complex showing some stress fractures under the weight of years of catastrophic financial losses. "News" aside, there have been some potential signs of change out of "entertainment."

If you're in the "watch it burn" camp and hoping for continued self-immolation, though, don't worry. Feel free to sleep easy. Despite the recent evidence of some reconsideration within the industry, there is far too much in the pipeline and far too many true believers within the studios for change to come quickly enough to matter. As I was wandering around trailers and releases recently, I came across a true gem that serves as a case study for what's wrong with Hollywood.

The new product is called "Girls on the Bus," and will be airing on Max (formerly known as HBO Max) next month. If the trailer (also embedded below) is anything to go by, it's going to be a stupendous stinker. "Girls on the Bus" looks to be a grrrl power take on campaign coverage. It follows a group of four professional women while they "Sex and the City" it up as groupies - excuse me, I mean "journalists" - embedded in a presidential campaign. The trailer hits all the high points. If you watch it, you'll be treated to plenty of teases about "Our Democracy," racist conservatives, meaningless trysts, alcohol abuse by professional women, etc. - and it's all presented as glamorous. It is also, of course and not by coincidence, coming out in an election year.

The show is based on a book called "Chasing Hillary," written by a woman embedded in Clinton's campaigns. The book came out a couple of years after the 2016 election, and is apparently something of a self-laudatory celebration of herself and her time on the campaign trail and the highs and travails of modern journalism and journalists. Hooray. I think I'll give it a miss. It does, however, sound like prime fodder for a Hollywood that just can't help itself.

The industry machinations to make this program come to fruition are themselves somewhat notable. This adaptation started on Netflix, but that company dropped it. It then moved to the bastion of high-quality American prestige television: The CW. Even The CW - the dregs network of American television that brought out such trash as "Batwoman" - didn't finish this one. But this show is "important" or something and mustn't be allowed to die. It was canceled at The CW and moved to Max. This may have something to do with Warner Bros. Discovery selling off The CW, but I am not sure. It doesn't matter.

Several years and three networks later, this celebration of slutty propagandists shilling for Democrat candidates while destroying their own lives presented through a lens of glamorous and meaningful "work hard, play hard" freedom fighting and truthiness will finally be released. The bottom tier of the entertainment press is trying to prime the pump for it among the only audience a program like this could ever have: self-impressed AWFL activists. Per The Mary Sue, this show appears to hit the high points that really matter:

This series looks like a blast and falls into my favorite genre of Max show: Four Ladies Doing Things (see Sex and the City, Girls, The Sex Lives of College Girls, And ... Just Like That, etc.).
"Four ladies doing things." What an endorsement.

As Hollywood continues to fail to find the much-discussed "Contemporary Audience" it craves, it will continue to make shows like this one - predictable failures aimed at a hypothetical audience but that push propaganda to the redline. They must make these shows. Hollywood pathology demands it.

43 There are so many great thriller books out there that could be made into good and profitable movies. Many recent works by Dean Koontz come to mind. He even had a series featuring a strong and dangerous woman who was former FBI. But with rare exceptions (Terminal List), Hollywood will not touch these stories. We were both having more fun yelling at the screen than watching the actual movie. It didn't ever really start, it didn't go anywhere, then it was over. It introduced mystery after mystery without answering any questions. It did everything it could to vilify the members of the white protagonist family. Then the credits rolled and we saw Barack and Moose credited as Producers... and then everything made sense.

154 As Hollywood continues to fail to find the much-discussed "Contemporary Audience" it craves, it will continue to make shows like this one - predictable failures aimed at a hypothetical audience but that push propaganda to the redline. They must make these shows. Hollywood pathology demands it.

I have disagreed with this conventional wisdom for a few years now, that Hollywood is trying to "find a contemporary/modern audience".

I do not believe they are trying to find an audience, I believe they are working to create the audience through indoctrination with their product. They indoctrinate through television shows, movies and through their amusement parks. They also indoctrinate through all the interviews the producers and directors and writers do as well as those done by all the actors/actresses.

It's the same as with the auto industry and EVs. They are not trying to fulfill an EV market, they are forcing EVs on people and you will either accept or reject them. And if you reject them, you will be smeared for it.

Same playbook they use for Hollywood and culture overall. You will accept "the message" or you will be smeared and shunned.

The whole streaming thing is hilarious.

The entire industry went whole-hog on it. The entire industry. They thought they were going to replace theaters, cable, and OTA television with subscription models, and the subscription model is a giant shitshow.

The only one who could still be considered a success at the highest level is probably Netflix, and that's mostly because they're backed by so much investment money through their high stock price. Disney is losing hundreds of millions of dollars a quarter on Disney+ while their stock cratered to just over half of the highs they had a few years ago.

They are Icarus.

Dune definitely has some of what are now considered conservative ideas. Look at how it handles fear for example.

I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.

Fifty years ago everyone believed that a man needed to stare down his own fears and do what is right...but now that is a "far right wing" view on the emotion.

Consumers are stopping them because they simply are not buying the woke product anymore and cable cutting due to tough times is likely to accelerate loss of audience rather than increase it.

We have what is called a secular shift in the market caused by streaming going on. This is also killing the gatekeeping function of cable tv providers and carriage fees for the declining channels. Even ad revenues are flat because of Google and Meta getting the advert revenues formerly given to print, radio, and tv.

Media companies are going to have to adapt or die like the dinosaurs they are.

That probably works decently well, but it doesn't get you everything because studios are putting up walls around their own content.

I think of Spirited, the AppleTV+ exclusive holiday movie staring Will Ferrell and Ryan Reynolds. It has this feel of wanting to be a holiday classic to be rewatched forever, but you have to have AppleTV+, and number is honestly not huge (apparently 25 million paid subscribers). That's a very far cry from It's a Wonderful Life, in the public domain, on the three networks every Christmas because it was free to show.

Never cared much for Dune but the crisis of monarchy is that you don't have a scramble generally for succession of leadership but you do of sound leadership.

The Roman adoption system was probably one of the better than simply relying on biological chance for succession. The Ottoman approach would actually make for some decent entertainment albeit Game of Thrones on steroids. The politics of the seraglio plus the Highlander type competition among sons was some pretty fierce competition to become sultan.

I don't think it applies to the actual rentals ($4 for 48 hours of access to the individual title), just what they have for "free" on Prime Video.

They're apparently going to fold FreeVee completely and just make it all Prime.

You should be able to get $5 credits each month with late shipping or leaky liquids if you chat when something is wrong. You probably won't even get a human. Just put "cost adjustment" in at the prompt and it will likely pick out what's wrong and offer you the credit.

333 The book came out a couple of years after the 2016 election, and is apparently something of a self-laudatory celebration of herself and her time on the campaign trail and the highs and travails of modern journalism and journalists.

She stands there, head held high. The wind gently waves her hair as the light of the setting sun paints her face in its gentle glow. "I am a Journalist," she thinks to herself, "no matter what happens, I will seek the truth!"
She does not see the kids on skateboards bearing down on her with the water balloons, and who escape laughing. Later, her ruined Dior pantsuit reflects the tragedy of her chosen career. She enters the Editor's office and begins to undress...hoping she gets another big story to cover.

336 The Ottoman approach would actually make for some decent entertainment albeit Game of Thrones on steroids.

I was explaining how the Ottoman succession processes worked to a friend I was watching the Ottoman v Vlad Dracula mini series that was on recently.

As Sultan you get as many wives as possible at least 5, but more if you can manage it. Slaves are good choice as well if they are good looking. Anyway, then you make sure you have a LOT of kids. Then the boys kill each other to make sure all the strongest succeeds perhaps with your wives helping to assassinate each other's sons as well.

And Mehmed II was especially screwed up. He took one Greek Princess as a sex slave for a couple of years, got bored with her and gave her to a retainer then demanded their oldest daughter from their marriage as a consort later...

Needless to say my non-history junkie co-watcher was horrified.

381 The Magical Negro is a trope in American cinema, television, and literature. In the cinema of the United States, the Magical Negro is a supporting stock character who comes to the aid of white protagonists in a film. Magical Negro characters, often possessing special insight or mystical powers, have long been a tradition in American fiction. The old-fashioned word "Negro" is used to imply that a "magical black character" who devotes himself to selflessly helping whites is a throwback to racist stereotypes such as the "Sambo" or "noble savage". I mentioned up at #218 she was unofficially campaigning a bit to raise her profile in case the Dem convention was brokered. Couldn't remember the exact details of how she was doing that, and your example is one of a few recent appearances I know she's made. She hasn't let the dream go lol.

I watched intently as Barbara Eden, the manicurist, got off the bus in Mayberry, soon to upset the entire town. That was over 60 years ago.

389 Or, you know, read the book. It's a pretty good book.

I liked the first two - thought the next two were "meh". After that ? Awful.

392 Licensing is a complex world of individual and bulk, non-exclusive contracts.

Dune is on Netflix (well, until tomorrow). It doesn't mean that Max and Netflix have merged.

True but the interfaces are identical unlike Netflix and Max. And like I said they aren’t just sharing movies, they’re in the exact same order.

I would volunteer to pick Cholla spines out of her skin, which she would likely get plenty of, if she ran off that road.

Those “lies” seem to include a lot of evidence that you and your dad do nothing but lie and take bribes.

The interfaces aren't exactly the same. They have very similar structures, but even the searches operate differently.

Amazon and Paramount merging would be honestly huge news. It didn't happen.

397 Delaware does no sanctuary cities, towns. It has taken in about four (4) legitimate Refugees in a decade.

OTOH, it's loaded with small strip malls with liquor, cigarettes, and 'spas/massage' and also convenience stores for scratch offs, sandwiches, and stimulate drinks.

Wilmington is rather attractive in daylight, totally ghost-like by 3 pm. Wealth is at the shore.

402 I was explaining how the Ottoman succession processes worked to a friend I was watching the Ottoman v Vlad Dracula mini series that was on recently.
