Meet The PetMorons

callie m medic.jpg

Good evening;

This was our cat Callie. She was a backyard sort-of feral that charmed her way into the house. We notice she had abnormal respiratory effort and took her to the vet, where we learned she'd had some trauma in the past leaving her with one functional lung and a mess of scar tissue in her chest. We had roughly three excellent years with her, discovering her love of my wife's hair scrunchies, naps in freshly dried laundry, unsecured jewelry, and salted butter. She passed unexpectedly last month in my wife's arms; she is greatly missed.

I'm a long-time lurker, but you can use my nom de internet "Mausermedic".

So sorry that you have lost beautiful Callie. She was lucky to have you and your wife to love her.

tippy t s mar.jpg

From Jewells:

This is Tippy, an 11 year old terrier mix. A lady paid her neighbor $50 if she would let her take Tippy to a shelter. Tippy spent most of her life chained outside. She is very energetic for an 11 year old. She hasn't had much interaction with people and it shows. When I met her last week, she was jumping all over me and getting in my face to give kisses. We gently pushed her away and said no and she calmed down. So .. she's trainable even at 11 years old. Sad story but a happy ending because of Shep's Place.

An inspirational story! Looks like Tippy is still full of life. Thanks for sharing Tippy's story and photo.

My new granddog . . . . My daughter's third dog. His name is Frank. My daughter acquired Frank while her husband was away on a business trip. They are still married.

Conservative Hippie.

A classic story and a classic photo. Frank is adorable. Thanks for sharing.

My Conor Frenchie pup and friend as they guard the property!

Thanks for the variety of specialty threads you provide for the Horde, of course, Conor and I are devotees of the Pet Thread, but all of them are good. As an aside, the daffodils in several different locations here have apparently survived the winter again even though they always seem to die back in July and try to convince me I will never see them again. Yet at the end of January or in early February, there they are again.

Hrothgar

Conor has learned well from his friend! He looks like a wonderful guard dog.

15 Ok, so two weeks ago we went overseas for a family reunion, on a long haul flight. As soon as we got off the plane, I got a text from doggeh's sitter/breeder- doggeh had bloated and was undergoing emergency surgery because of torsion.
I almost turned around to go right back home (family convinced me not to - sitter is a pro who would take excellent care of him)
Spoiler alert - doggeh is fine, recovering, but they had to remove his spleen.
Any tips on extra tlc /diet supplements for spleenless pups?

16 Great photos and I loved Frank in the boot. LOL.

Our cat, Pynchon, named after a novelist-Thomas Pynchon-whom my son likes-follows around my husband like some dogs follow their owners. If he goes upstairs, Pynchon follows him. If he goes to the kitchen, Pynchon follows. He sleeps on FenSpouse's lap. He sleeps on the bed next to spouse-on the other side than me. The only place he doesn't follow him is onto the bathroom. Can't figure out why he tags after spouse because we both feed the cat. Pynchon has a new toy-a fish filled with catnip. He loves to throw it around, probably not only because of the catnip but because it makes an interesting crackling noise from the catnip. We tried to teach Pynchon, " Go get the fish", but he hasn't learned that bit of English yet.

19 Had to have a growth removed from above Precious the Bichon's eye. The surgery went well, she isn't pawing much at the stiches and we just learned the growth was benign. Good news all around. At 15, giving her anesthesia could be a problem but she does fine with it. (Although her shaky antics the rest of the day can be amusing.)

29 The New Cat was a fail for over a year. She got adopted from a no-kill shelter and just was not even having it. Finally I had totally given up on this animal as an anti-mouse utility and she came jumping up on me and now, for reasons known only to Herself, is a House Cat.
But, she had a dreadful habit of, being, on the kitchen table in a certain spot. It was her Place. I did not like it, but she was very specific. so I put down a towel for her furry ass to sit on.
That has now been there for over a year but the other day I WASHED it.
Oh no, it is a completely different Thing, I cannot sit on that.

Doing a quick search, a diet without grains or other foods that would cause gas should be used with the spleen gone. Also, moist is better than than dry. We are NOT experts but there are a bunch of sites dealing with doggy diets after the spleen is removed.

Long story short she tried to jump a fence that was low on the side she started from, didn't make it and I found her hung up. Cut the fence so she was not hung up and then Veterinarian and muscle help from neighbors we got her rotated so her legs were on the mild downhill and got her up. Then on Jan 1 she got into dry beet pulp pellets and had a bad choke.

Since she started eating good a few days after the choke she is loving life, getting a bunch of soaked senior feed and beet pulp 3x/day and a bit of hay to have something to chew on whenever she wants.

Thinking back on my young life I really think the biggest motivation for owning my home was pets. I hated renting and being limited to ones friendly to pets. 67 SQUEAK(almost 6)
I named her thus becayse she gives ut a tiny squeak. Ocasionally a real miew but that's rare. Found by my wonderful nextdoor neighbor as a very tiny kitten hiding in the hen coop. He brought her over and she's been attached to my elder daughter ever since. In the last two years she's takeen to me as well but I'm only #2.
She comes to me when she needs protection from bully cats. However until recently she'd hiss at my younger daughter and has never gone on her lap. She'll stay with me all day until daughter gets back from work. She's not a sociable kitty with the other cats. Sometimes she'll sleep with me all night and has thus grown to tolerate Bailey who does usually sleep with me. Squeak will give me chin nips and also wash my hands. She is very small and probably the smallest of all the adult cats.

I think getting a dog was a far more intense commitment than letting some chick move in with me. I did a lot of serious work to make sure anywhere I lived 'took dogs' and yes, huge motivator for home ownership.

78 Left my kittehs for the first time for an out of town weekend trip last week. They seemed to have fared okay. I usually have two litter boxes in the house and one in the garage. For the trip I brought the garage box inside . And I had previously purchased a 30x 36 x 8 plastic container with a lid to use as a litter box in case I had an unexpected emergency that I could just pop the lid and go. I also used that one.

And since they free graze already, it was no issue leaving the extra food out since they wouldn't eat it all at once.

80 66 Ciampino's Rescue Kitties

I like checking out what the Rescue Kittuhs are doing at weird hours. I'm up all night anyway. They are usually doing kittuh things; sleeping, eat, staring out the window, more sleep, chasing stuff, moving to another part of the room, sleep some more, eat, poop, pee, sleep, eat, sleep. Kittuhs!

82 Afternoon, pet people,

The big black Stirling cat just climbed into my lap. He does that at odd intervals.

Beautiful animules today.

Update: Well, lap time didn't last long. He's off on his usual cat affairs. No idea where Dagny La Siberienne is -- no, wait, she's atop my briefcase in the armchair. With her gray-brown coloring, she's hard to spot sometimes.

Well we caught the pregnant Calico Girl and put her in the room. Of course we chased out all the other cats which they didn't appreciate. You know 'cats and closed doors'! They do try and sneak in when we go in for feeding and cleaning. Anyway we didn't want problems once she gives birth and the other cats could bother her even of only curious.
So the webcam will show one cat until the kittens come. She likes to lie on the chest of drawers by the window and look out. Probably pining for the yard.

I tried many years ago to read Gravity's Rainbow. I failed.

Part of it as about a couple (or maybe just a man?) who discovers that wherever he & his partner have made love, a German V2 rocket soon explodes.

The premise sounds funny, but the novel was way too "dense" for me.

92 Greetings, Pet Threadists!

Last night, GoodSon brought a new toy for our Daisy dog. A Fennec fox toy, with crunchy-krinkley tail, squeaky head, and no stuffing. Daisy was greatly delighted and played ith it exclusively since.

This morning, Ony cat was crossing the room, and young Daisy, as she sometimes does, tried to get old Ony to play, by lunging, play-bowing, and barking at her. Ony, as ever, just hissed and hunched up. I told Daisy, show Ony your new toy! Surprise -- Daisy fetched her new toy, brought it over to Ony, and demonstrated its squeakiness.

Ony ignored it of course, and went on her way, but Daisy's gesture was really cute.

Of course you are! If I wasn’t opposite of you, I would gladly foster her for you so it would be one less thing for you to be concerned about while you got your feet underneath you. I just wanted to be sure you and Paisley both had a place together- so I hope it didn’t come across as thinking you should be worried about you and not that sweet dog.

106 Both the cats are mad at me for reasons... well they are mad at me as I have to do some Stuff to do, so the routine they depend on disrupting, isn't there. That's it, I swear. They both now depend on my coming home from work and then both harassing me, but if I do housework or stay up, it disrupts THEIR disruption.

Cats will never forgive this.

Had a 2 yr old German shepherd bloat. In ER, gave us 50% chance survival of the surgery, 50% chance living two years.

They stitched the stomach to her ribs to prevent future bloat, as once it happens they a prone to it.
That dog lived to 13. Which is long for an 85 lb dog.

We were very careful after that to always allow at least 30 min of rest after feeding. Never ever allow large breeds to exert themselves after food.

111 Enjoy the pet pix & stories in the comments. Rooting for Northernlurker & Paisley.

More dog toy tale:

I may have mentioned how glad we are that Daisy learned what her toys are, and no longer chews shoes, clothes, or furniture. She has lots of squeaky things, chewey things, and of course lots of balls.

We put her toys in a nice wicker basket. She refused to understand what we meant by "put your toy in the basket." But she was excellent at pulling them out.

For a few days last week, she started up-ending the basket, dumping everything out. We started finding bits of sticks, and realized she was chewing the bottom off the basket. Guess she thought, you know, it was hers.

The basket got retired, and all her toys now reside in a plastic storage box. I think it makes it easier for her to search for the toy she wants. Anyway, she hasn't dumped them all out of it. So far....

Brilliant Belgian Malinois, but kinda manic still, sometimes. And loud! Very loud.
