BAD THERAPY: Why the Kids Aren't Growing Up

press dept ed.jpg

No matter how profoundly they've failed, their response is always:

"Give us more money. Give us more power. Let us do more."

Abigail Shrier

How Bad Therapy Hijacked Our Nation's Schools - Free Press

* * * * *

If you want to climb a mountain, don't go two steps and ask, 'How do I feel?'

Nearly all public schools offer some type of counseling, mental health or "wellness" lessons, writes Abigail Shrier in Free Press. But kids are more troubled than ever. Often, these interventions "target the healthy, inadvertently exacerbating kids' worry, sadness and feelings of incapacity."

In her new book, Bad Therapy: Why the Kids Aren't Growing Up, Shrier complains that social-emotional learning has gone far beyond teaching students how to disagree respectfully or "get a grip." It's become "a curricular juggernaut that devours billions in education spending each year."

Teachers are encouraged to start the school day with an "emotions check-in." At a conference for California teachers, counselor Natalie Sedano shared her check-in: "How are you feeling today? Are you daisy-bright, happy and friendly? Or am I a ladybug? Will I fly away if we get too close?"

What could possibly go wrong? Maybe something like this?

A Salt Lake City mother told her about an "emotions check-in" for fifth graders in which the teacher asked: What "is making you really sad right now?"

. . . one boy began mumbling about his father's new girlfriend. Then things fell apart. "All of a sudden, he just started bawling. And he was like, 'I think that my dad hates me. And he yells at me all the time,' " said Laura, a mom of one of the other students.

Another girl announced that her parents had divorced and burst into tears. Another said she was worried about the man her mother was dating. Within minutes, half of the kids were sobbing. It was time for the math lesson, but no one wanted to do it.

When Every Day is a Mental Health Day

Via J.J. Sefton's Morning Report, Feb. 28, Kay S. Hymowitz reviews Abigail Shrier's new book, Bad Therapy: Why the Kids Aren't Growing Up

Abigail Shrier's first book, 2020's Irreversible Damage, launched the mother of all cancel campaigns. Because the book attributed the sudden and inexplicable rise in juvenile gender anxiety to social contagion rather than the activist-approved explanation of social progress, Shrier, an occasional contributor to City Journal, was branded a "transphobe." Amazon employees demanded the company remove the book from its virtual shelves. Unlike the suits at Target, who briefly did exactly that, Amazon stopped short of cancelling the book and settled for banning any paid advertising. Despite growing questions about juvenile transgender treatment, including among practitioners, many libraries continue to treat Irreversible Damage as radioactive. Only last month, a Japanese publisher reneged on plans to publish the book, proving that, whether or not transgenderism is contagious, the urge to cancel those out of line with approved ideas unquestionably is.

Shrier's new book Bad Therapy, an astute and impassioned analysis of the mental-health crisis now afflicting adolescents, may cause a similar emotional meltdown in some corners of American culture. Shrier's target is more expansive than it was in Irreversible Damage; she aims her fire at the therapeutic mindset that pervades not just the offices of psychologists and counsellors, but elementary, middle, and high school classrooms, best-seller lists, middle-class homes, and government agencies. It's a pernicious development because a therapeutic mindset easily paralyzes kids' natural defenses and resilience, hence the crisis we confront today. Assuming a Bad Therapy backlash comes, it is unlikely to be as heated as it was in the case of Irreversible Damage -- therapists, who have the most to lose if Shrier's analysis were to win out, are a more sedate crowd than trans activists -- but one hopes that for the sake of the rising generation, any pushback won't prevent people from heeding the warnings of this important book.

Shrier's general thesis is that Gen Z's distress is iatrogenic in origin. That is, it is caused in large part by the treatment -- in this case, bad therapy -- meant to cure it. . .

I'm not sure that the academic set and the federal bureaucracy supporting it are easy opponents. They may not be pushing the end of all that is "normal" like proponents of Queer Theory, but the left is the left. They already have a history of pushing the more traditional psychologists (say, those who do not support pathologizing maleness) out of universities.

Shrier's chapters on the schools' contribution to this era of bad therapy make the most compelling case for iatrogenesis. Schools are now wedded to Social and Emotional Learning, one of the latest of the recurring fads that regularly excite American educators. SEL has the effect of promoting "unceasing attention to feelings" and nourishes hyper vigilance and, she argues, anxiety. Teachers schedule "mindfulness minutes" (to bring attention back to the present moment) and "emotion check ins" (how are we feeling today?) Though untrained and without any thought-out theory of the juvenile mind, teachers encourage kids to share thoughts making them sad or angry -- their parents' divorce, a fight with a father -- in front of other kids. Woe to the shy or introverted child: educators seem intent on subjecting their students to the stares and gossip of their classmates, though they may be effectively preparing them for the TMI spirit of social media.

Moreover, as in the case of the nurse with the child-suicide inventory, SEL-inspired professionals are quick to insert themselves between parents and children. In a number of states, laws allow 13-year-olds to go to a counsellor without notifying their parents. In a number of school districts, a similarly misguided deference for juvenile privacy applies to kids who ask teachers to change their pronouns and names in an effort to change their sex with no parental input. "Social-emotional learning," Shrier quips, "turns out to be a lot like the Holy Roman Empire, neither social, nor good for emotional health, nor something that can be learned."

When fragility is adults' default assumption about children, when trauma is assumed to be omnipresent -- Atlantic writer Derek Thompson notes that the TikTok hashtag #Trauma has more than 6 billion views -- it has a pernicious effect on children's perceptions. It frames their expectations and understanding of their experience, denying them opportunities to learn how to exercise their natural resilience. By the time they are in high school, they are walking psychiatric manuals, casually reciting all their friends' maladies. . .

Yipes!!!!

7 No one is going to confront it, but the reality is if we hate this generation, who were their parents? I know the world I grew up in my parents didn’t tell me to do or think anything they just led by example. I guess I could’ve gone lefty, but to be honest that wasn’t possible why would I have even thought of such a thing? No one wants to be to blame for their kids, but we keep talking about these young generations, as if they didn’t have parents.

Ok, setting aside porn (which impact cannot be missed) there are other things about cell phones I have a problem with at that age.

I think about the number of times I went with my Mom to the public library and she showed me how to look up answers to questions that she or Dad could not answer. Asking Dad about cars while 'helping' him change the oil or spark plugs. It's not just that that got me out of the house or improved socialization (with parent training wheels) but that it also added context to info you do not get by merely asking the black square a question.

The thing about the French is they don’t move here they don’t try to break our laws and immigrate here or act as illegal. Aliens as we used to call them. As many Americans want to go to France for whatever reason as French people that want to come here. That is what makes us so bitter, we both think we are the be all and end all. if someone questions my American bona fides because I say that they’re just wrong. I’m the most hard-core right wing American you’ll ever find, but I finally understood this thing about the French that many Americans do not. By the way, this is not some type of protection of the French politicos. I think they suck Chirac, Macron, all of them, legit jagoffs. They say Mitterand was the most pro American president. He was awful, but I think they were right.

By the way, they hate all our presidents and all Europeans hate our presidents. Never listen to a European talking about an American president, they are dimwhities and they want us to be weak

44 I said it in the other thread, but my cousin and I used to go to the Texas Embassy in London. It was the restaurant. The restaurant was within a block of the actual Texas Embassy, that Texas had with London after gained independence..

The food was just OK but it was a really cool place and I’m sorry to hear that has been closed down. I went to a couple Tex-Mex places in England because I was there a long time, and every Texan needs some chips, salsa and margaritas once in a while. Also went to some TexMex places in Paris and those were actually better. They all sucked because let’s be honest why wouldn’t they?

I love small town America, but it is shocking but people think it’s good Mexican food. I am legit biased as hell and I do think Texas and California do it way better than anyone else. And I’m not talking about “Authentic Mexican” whatever that means I’m talking about legit TexMex and I guess Cali-Mex.

69 Legitimate use/need for therapy could be over-run by this shove toward therapy for everything. When my grandson was between nine and ten he started second, third, fourth, and etc guessing himself for some reason over making decisions, even as simple as what shoes he wanted. He saw a (male) therapist for a few months. He's eleven now and no longer having trouble.

76 63, I looked back at my life because it’s pretty obvious that many kids of conservatives have become a liberal for whatever reason. I Think About how my parents raised me, and a kid figure out exactly what they might’ve done or I might’ve done to change things. my parents lead by example, they just live their lives, and that was enough.

I don’t take this slightly because I truly believe many conservative people have raised leftist kids and I don’t understand why. I do understand we all have to go our own way. But I am not going to pretend to understand why conservative parents raise leftist kids. I think people should delve into that. I think it’s an important issue.

I am not blaming the parents, but at the same time that world is so far from the one I grew up in it is very difficult to understand.

97 About That Poll (NY Times). Trump is winning 97% of those who say they voted for him four years ago. In contrast, Mr. Biden is winning only 83% of his 2020 voters, with 10 percent saying they now back Mr. Trump.

That suggests that the main reason Biden is trailing is that his supporters have not come home yet. It makes some sense. Trump has been formally running for president since he announced just after the 2022 midterms. Biden has spent this time governing the country. It’s a good bet that Biden’s supporters will ultimately come back to him as the campaign heats up.

too many Americans are used to to being entertained. They expect a candidate to create a sense of excitement. JFK said that people are attracted to a candidate who has "charisma". Biden seems dull to many people.

Trump doesn't have charisma either. But he knows something about show business. He's always in the news. Remember the old hollywood maxim: "There's no such thing as bad publicity."

Unless people are lying, that quote makes it worse not better.I personally find it hard to believe that 10 percent of people who voted for Biden now support Trump.

My daughter married the son of immigrants from the north side of the Mediterranean. He's pretty much an Area 51 believing, lunar landing disbelieving, sort of leftist. If he wasn't a really good mechanic he'd be working at a sandwich shop.

My son married a savant (formerly 'idiot savant' now labelled 'savant syndrome'), who has the incredible ability to read and retain information, but with a barely 100 IQ - if even that. She's a leftist of course, married to Big Brother through her work. NPR is probably on every one of her car radio presets.

So two conservative parents pretty much had their offspring nullified by their marital mate. I have very little if anything to do with either of them anymore. Last talked to my daughter a year ago, my son five years. I just don't need the conflict at this stage in my life. I'd rather go fishing, make great meals, maintain a great home in a great location. I just know the life I grew up in with my parents. By the way, my dad was a Marine Corps officer, think of the movie the great Santini, other than all the drama and bad stuff. Our lives were idyllic really. But I can’t think of a time, when my father or mother told me what to think politically, but also, there was never a time I wasn’t a hard-core conservative.

I take pride that when I was in third grade, our school voted on Carter versus Ford in 76 and in our school Ford won big time. I wasn’t a subservient kid I love to explore, and I even gotten some trouble only was exploring and nothing else. But I never thought of being anything else, but a conservative, which has been who I’ve always been my entire life. New Yorkers do consider Scranton to be hicksville if not exactly rural. Most rural areas would not accept or excuse the level of violence we see in the big urban areas.

Where the hell do these people think they’re going to go? I know they all think they’re going to France or Italy, but nothing could be further from the truth.

Americans have been mentally abused when it comes to history and civics. Reality is none of those countries want you and they will not let you in. They all think America has this incredible burden where they have to let every person who comes in illegally in. France won’t do that, Italy won’t do that, hell Mexico won’t do that and if you think I’m joking, just try them.

I'd go back even further then that - the movie 'Dog Day Afternoon' (1975) was about a bank robbery to pay for a sex change operation. The movie 'Car Wash' (1976) has a terrorist, a convert to Islam, a prostitute, a cross-dresser, and other assorted misfits.

Hollywood has been pushing the ball toward the goal-line for nearly half a century. Obama pushed it within a few inches, now they handed the ball to the demented quarterback and hope he runs in the right direction.

They only check passports at established 'ports of entry'.
They also do customs and agricultural inspections at POE too.

And it's not that they are just waving people through at other location - those CBP are helping hold down the concertina wire and other physical barriers, handing out fruit baskets, teddy bears, and soccer balls.... and parole papers, notice to appear years in the future at unspecified loacations, gift cards, and transporation to remote corners of the country.

I don't work with kids, and of course there are plenty of cases of real PTSD. It's like everything else though, when terms get into the vernacular, people misuse the term.

What I tend to see in adults is the real thing, and generally when I hear what they experienced as children, I can see why the trauma carries into their adult lives.

The problem with people who self-diagnose though, just like when you hear people say they're "bipolar," more often than not, anyone going around telling you they have it, what they really have is a personality disorder.

Now, PTSD and POs often go hand in hand, but if they're telling you about it, it's a manifestation of the PO.

About 10 years ago, the army gave up using the grenade course for basic training. The argument was young men today didn’t grow up throwing rocks etc.. They were always playing video games and the drill instructors spent way too much time teaching them just to throw something so it wasn’t worth it.

197 Sleight of hand. He's counting legal immigrants in the 'migrants' number.
Posted by: Chuck Martel at March 02, 2024 12:53 PM (fs1hN)

And even though his stat is sleight of hand he is also helped by the crime rate of a certain sector of American born citizens . Also his parameter gets to ignore children born here of illegal immigrants.
Posted by: Alizarin Crimson at March 02, 2024 01:02 PM (MNhXM)

No, sorry, there's no "even though." The stats are COMPLETELY COOKED by trying to factor in legal immigrants.

The actual numbers, those that are gathered for ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS show numbers that are staggeringly higher than any grouping of people who are legal residents in this country.

Including those groups you're hinting at.

199 I know I mentioned this weeks ago, but it bears repeating; while at the DMV over 3/4 of the people there were Hispanics. Most every one of them had the same piece of paper, filled out by computer; "Application for Driver's License." Some had the "Resident" card given to them by the Feds that (get this) allows them to obtain a "Real ID" license.

And it's not "just" the Hispanics. The Chinese and Middle Eastern single men who flooded over the border by the thousands get one of those "Resident" cards too.

The thing is, I wouldn't put it past these caravans to abandon a little kid, so it's believable to me.

I also agree 100% that EVERY ONE of them should be deported, and if they have citizen-kids, they'll have to take the kids with them or find foster parents in the US. And end birthright citizenship.

The last time I was at the DMV in a 'Main Line' neighborhood (snotty Pennsylvania area outside of Philadelphia) it was like being in a 3rd world country. The outlier was an Amish couple and my wife and I. I heard very little English being spoken. It was all very hushed tones, like a criminal conspiracy at work.

I agree that this should be done. I'm glad PDT is talking about it. It should be done like Bukele rounded up the gang members in El Salvador. The disruption to families seeking a better life will be sad but necessary. I do think that many illegals are coming as an invading army that must be taken out.

gourmand, Yes, I'm in Cali. I'm aware of all the difficulties small businesses in Cali face, and the supposed evils of dry cleaning solvents.

fluffy, I admit, I strenuously avoid buying anything that says "Dry Clean Only."

And the owner is right about the foot traffic, although I still don't quite get it. I go for a walk on weekends and it looks like a ghost town -- although it isn't one. People just aren't out walking and cruising around? I guess we got used to cocooning, sheltering, distancing, isolating, etc. Weird. It's considered a scenic, touristic place.

217 I just had this weird feeling that for some reason young Americans think it is normal to just show up in the country and say well here I am. I knew when I grew up, you couldn’t move to Germany or France or Japan, unless you had some extreme skill that none of their own people had. I seriously doubt this is changed. In fact, it is probably become worse if possible.

I did meet some Americans working in London but if you saw what their job skills were, you would be surprised. They had extremely specific skills that the Brits could use to help Britain. It is weird that they work that way. I honestly believe the biggest issue we have is most Americans are so dumb. They think they can move to any other country, and nothing could be further from the truth. Once they realize that they are not welcome maybe they won’t be so welcoming.

225 Heck, I lived in California in the late 70s in a very right wing area. It was still too lefty for our family. Anyone who says California was conservative. Yes, they had lots of conservatives, but the state itself was already warped that’s for sure.

San Diego has great weather and they always had the military bases. My understanding at least in the early 70s it was a great place to live. There are others I could choose but my point was a lot of the places people like I want to go where in the past. I’m not saying that’s a good way to think but it’s how I think.

230 >>> There is zero chance Americans, or anyone else will move to Japan en masse or be allowed to do so.

En masse, no, but it can be done.

The impression I have is that the government knows the straits they are in, and people acknowledge the issue in the abstract, but not many want to be the employer, neighbor, landlord etc that takes the step.

Posted by: fluffy at March 02, 2024 02:09 PM (86W+h)

231 It is a racist country and I don’t see that lightly. Literally everyone in the international community knows this they just let it go because it’s an island nation. You’re right that they have a dwindling population because they don’t procreate. The last thing they’re going to do is invite other people in I just think many Americans have been taught it is just normal to allow anyone in who wants in and literally every other country that controls its borders thinks otherwise.

The correct term is "illegal alian". An "iimigrant" is one admitted with a valid immigrant class of visa. Any who enter by an means other than presenting for inspection at a point of entry are "illegal aliens".

Illegal aliens are commiting are breaking the law every moment they are here. At best on the level as illegal parking.
If there are ten million illegal aliens here then every day illegal aliens commit ten million crimes as a baseline. It only goes up from there.
