We used to have great chrome bumpers and trim on our cars. Now everything is body-color plastic. (I'm pleased that there is chrome trim on my Buick, on the door handles and window frames, and the traditional Buick "portholes" -- really just another trim piece -- on the sides of the hood.)

55 The car is moving right to left. I like how the planes of air or whatever bend to demonstrate its motion and speed. The buildings in the back lean counter to the angle of the planes. It creates a nice zig-zag pattern. The red and yellow are vibrant. I like how as the planes compress, their colors change from blue to red -- cool static to warm motion. There's so much energy here.

Ford Model Ts. There were much more expensive cars like Rolls-Royce. And if you had the $$$ or pounds, you could buy a chassis and engine and have a custom body built and installed -- a sporti convertible, say, a lighter body than a saloon (sedan) with an engine designed for much greater weight. A baby rocket.

I think Bugatti was in there too, and Isotta-Fraschini.

105 The City of Madras, Oregon is proposing a new restriction on shopping carts that would fine grocery stores for carts stolen off their property. Many of those carts are ending up near homeless camps.

Stores in Madras who spoke to Central Oregon Daily Tuesday agree there’s a problem, but there’s no consensus on how to fix it.

“We’ve had close to probably 70 to 100 carts stolen in the last two years,” Ericksons Thriftway co-manager Kevin Eidemiller said. “At least once a week to every other week, we go hunting for our own carts.”

The City contacted grocery stores late last year requesting action to keep carts on property.

“When we started to see the relationship between shopping carts not being kept on the retailer’s property and then being used in ways that weren’t intended, we thought we needed to start figuring out a way to solve this problem,” Madras Community Development Director Nicholas Snead said.

... next, the stores will propose hiring vigilantes to track down the thieves and beat the living shit out them, then using the shopping carts to carry their bodies to Willow Creak for dumping.

The Wiki article mentions that I-F offered a model somewhere around 1908 that had 100 hp. My gosh, that must have been something.

On my wall I have a framed poster for Bugatti. The driver and his lady friend, wearing goggles as people did in open cars, look to be caught in a storm of choking dust kicked up by the car ahead of them. The driver is shouting (in Italian -- so this is my loose translation): "That's a Bugatti -- no way I can pass!"

The game there (and maybe here too I dunno) is yiu have to buy a whole bunch of “regular” Porsches before the dealer will sell you a “special” Porsche. So people straight up buy cars they don’t want, sell them for a 30% loss right away (which means $50k loss per car and up) just so they can have an opportunity to buy the car they really want.

It’s nuts.

The monocled, Germanic director is actually something of a combination of Stroheim and Fritz Lang.

However, if he's in some kind of military uniform, that's Stroheim (he was never in the military, but he wore them frequently in his own films as well as one of his most famous acting roles in The Grand Illusion).

----
Logically (unknown term to liberals) it would be on the cops to trace and arrest anyone with a cart outside the parking lot. That's for what the businesses pay taxes to the city. Instead, incredibly(?) not only is the shop going to lose an expensive cart, it will get fined as well. Do they already do that with stolen cars? I know that's the norm with stolen firearms.

This was the highest speed ever attained by a road vehicle prior to WW1 and set up a world record that remained unbeaten until 1919.

The inaugural 1908 Prinz Heinrich Fahrt was won by a Benz driven and designed by another important motorsport figure – Fritz Erle. Erle was already the head of the racing department for Benz, also driving the cars in major races with plenty of success, and he would lead the development of the 200-km/h (124 mph) Blitzen Benz of 1909 that eventually captured all race and speed records until 1919. Initially a run of 100 cars was planned for production, but around 50 were built before WWI got underway.

286 An undergrad student at Fordham University complains that he will pay $90k this year, and that perhaps the university should spend less money on extraneous nonsense:

Many of us would prefer administrators spend time finding solutions to our financial crises rather than working on their environmental action plans, sending constant COVID-19 updates, and wishing us a “Happy Mardi Gras,” as Fordham has done this school year.

Left unsaid, but the obvious elephant in the room, is the cost of Fordham's DEI administration.

The truly astonishing thing is that ANYONE pays $90k for Fordham, which claims to be selective, but has a 58% admittance rate. Of course, the student never considers going to another, cheaper school.

Law proposal:

Any education establishment that receives federal funds must have an administrator to student rate of 50-1 or higher. If the ratio dips below that, the first year the top tier pays the salaries of the bottom tier. If the ratio continues for a second year, the university is cut off from federal funds for 20 years and any university that hires either a provost or president from the university in question is also cut off for 20 years.

Or, all federal funding of universities is cut off today, whichever is quickest.

315 The solution is the West, and the US in particular, providing all of the aid that Ukraine needs. When TFG says he'd let Russia do whatever the hell they want, GOP voters and elected critters publicly separating themselves from TFG and his actions.

Zelenskyy said Sunday that 31,000 Ukrainian soldiers have been killed, "Not 300,000, not 150,000, not whatever Putin and his deceitful circle have been lying about." And on the Russian side, estimates vary from 70k-315k killed. When Ukrainians have the arms they need to defend themselves, they kill up to 10 Russians for every Ukrainian killed.

More money? Is there an end game? Or just war forever more? Just sickening to me, humans dying on both sides.

Putin's demonstrated bad-faith negotiations too many times in the past. The entire world pretty much know that any agreement he signs on to would then be as worthless and meritless as another Munich Agreement.

346 Heyoooo! Seriously, though, Aldi does has some of the more hippie/liberal nuttos shopping there, but I like going occasionally. They have frequently rotating and unusual stock, especially in the meats, cheeses, and desserts. Good dried fruits and nuts, honestly. Very eclectic.

The quality and flavor on some things surpasses Walmart's. And you occasionally get more actual product, i.e., $2.99 for a 12-oz. bag of shredded cheese, whereas the $2.22 bag at WM has only 8 oz.

They also carry (small bottles of) my sparkling mineral water, something WM refuses to acknowledge exists.

Late to the thread, I learned over the weekend, the immediately catalyst for the invasion was a massing of advanced weapons on the border, and that the leadup to the Russians invading was them basically telling the Americans "this isn't acceptable, they must be removed or we're going in."

So EVERYTHING our government says about this whole thing being "unprovoked" is a complete lie.

Even if prices and quality were comparable, Aldi would still win on the shopping experience. When I just need my usual items, I can be in and out of Aldi in 10 minutes. Everything just works there. At Walmart something is ALWAYS screwed up.

356 There's no easy way to type this - I got a call this morning that Bandersnatch passed away last night.

The Horde meant a lot to him and we talked about the art thread and posts here every day. He might not have been around as much recently but this place still meant a lot to him.

Well, crap, ATC! I am so sorry to hear that. I know you and he were close. Please accept my condolences. It is very unexpected, given that he was not quite so 29 as some of us here. RIP, Bandersnatch.

I like going there occasionally also for just basic shopping. Hard to make an impulse purchase there because there ain't that much to impulse on.

362 The City contacted grocery stores late last year requesting action to keep carts on property.

367 251 I read an interesting corollary yesterday.
Imagine that electric vehicles were the norm for 100 years or more. Then an inventor unveils a new thing, the internal combustion engine car. It has unlimited range, refuels in less than 10 minutes, weighs a quarter of the weight of an EV, and is safer to operate.
The world would go wild for it.

368 I like some of the artworks of the Futurist movement. This is good, but doesn't come close to the standard setting "Nude Descending a Staircase, No. 2", a 1912 painting by Marcel Duchamp

I also like "Woman Descending the Staircase", a photography by Gerhard Richter, 1965. How about some artistic photography for the art thread, Ace-and-crew?

Just IMHO.
