Wyeth Day Dream1.jpg

Day Dream
Andrew Newell Wyeth

Long-time commenter, and friend, Bandersnatch passed away yesterday.

He loved Andrew Wyeth, for both prurient and esthetic reasons, and we would often talk about Wyeth's work, and his position as one of the titans of 20th century American art. During one of those chats, he gleefully recounted a snippet from an interview, in which Wyeth spoke proudly of the work he had done to render pubic hair perfectly.

We once spent a few cold autumn hours on the patio of a local pub, drinking beer, smoking cigars, and building and tending a fire in the firepit. He was a ferocious competitor and was confident that he was the world's greatest fire builder; a claim I contested. We ended up with a roaring fire and a bunch of empty pint glasses, and I was left with a memory I will cherish.

RIP

15 Morning, folken!

I'm sure we've had this one before. Good to see it again. No doubt represents a hot climate, or a hot mosquito-plagued season in a more temperate one, or there would be no need for the mosquito netting.

Me, too.

In fact, I have a framed print of this very piece hanging on the wall above my computer monitor right now. I first saw it on an Art Thread and had to have a copy. I hung it my home office so I can see it whenever I want.

The mosquito net is particularly well-rendered. It's perfectly gauzy and must have been damned hard to do this well.

189 Yeah two 24 year old white upper middle class chicks stealing purses is the #1 crime issue of the day. Thanks FBI.

I saw a picture from a store in some big blue shithole where they even had the cans of SPAM in those glass boxes to make them hard to steal.

I wondered to people really steal SPAM?

So I went to ebay and searched for SPAM and sure enough there were hundreds of people selling it at low low prices.

Now, I'm sure there are plenty of legitimate, uh, SPAM merchants, but I'm guessing ebay is a great place to fence goods as well...

288 Very late to the thread. I hate when life gets in the way of important stuff like the art thread.

Thanks for choosing a Wyeth, always, and this one is an excellent example. Yeah, Helga is very feminine and Wyeth did a wonderful job depicting her. But the very sheer curtains catch my eye (as well as the girl). I can't figure out how he achieves that look. His usual technique of a bland background, natural light, and spots of color is so effective. There is a depth to the painting. I could study this for weeks, or longer, finding aspects that are appealing and effective. If I were an art student (the art world is glad I'm not) trying to copy this one would be an education in itself.

294 There's nothing more subjective than "art." Well, almost nothing.

I've told this story before; in junior high art class we were supposed to do a collage. My first attempt, various colored pieces of mesh arranged just so earned me a "D" and pissed me off. The teacher said I could submit another piece, but it had to be the next day. So I glued a bunch of trash I found in various trashcans to a piece of stained cardboard. Totally random. Took me all of 5 minutes to make.

Got an "A" on it.

Says more about the art teacher than anything else.

347 117 One of the most gripping stories I read as a young lad was Jack London's "To Build a Fire".

Nah, I find her voluptuous.

That word has unfortunately been co-opted. It means "full of delight or pleasure to the senses: conducive to or arising from sensuous or sensual gratification," not "fleshy" or "pudgy." A "voluptuary" is not a chubby-chaser.

Sofia Vergara or young Raquel Welch: voluptuous.

Lizzo: FAT.

349 Sorry about Bandersnatch. I think he must have been a good German teacher. He was clever and amusing and probably had ways to keep order.

I don’t understand Wolfus, the woman in the painting is not fat and certainly falls under the term voluptuous.

352 What a fine eulogy, cdb. And what a great memory. Beers, outdoors, a fire, cigars, and an appreciation of fine art. This is why we're just more fun than 'they' are.
