THE MORNING RANT: Decentralization versus Libertarianism

Liberty Bell.JPG

Earlier this week I posted a piece titled “More Winning in the Culture Wars at the State & Local Level.” It discussed major victories against woke capital, green energy, DEI, etc that are occurring at the state level. The thesis of the piece was that we will never win these battles at the federal level – certainly not in the halls of Congress - but we are winning them at the state level. A conservative Republican elected as state Attorney General, or to the state Utility Commission, or as Treasurer entrusted with investing state funds, is far more important to our cause than any US Senate seat.

State-level victories in the culture war are also an important reminder about the importance of federalism, which perhaps could use a re-branding as “Decentralization.”

Those of us on the right who cherish freedom, the Bill of Rights, etc have long championed federalism, but we often conflated the idealistic personal freedom of libertarianism with the vast economic and political freedom that federalism makes possible.

With 50 states offering 50 “laboratories of democracy” there are 50 different permutations of political and economic freedom (or lack thereof) that are possible.

Perhaps because “states’ rights” is a term that carries racial baggage, too many conservatives abandoned the idea of federalism altogether, and instead became obsessed with the utopian notion of liberty via national - or even global - libertarianism, which is just as unrealistic as “true communism,” due to human nature of course. Instead, we ended up with a freedom-crushing level of corporatism in which government tyranny has been outsourced to an oligopoly of obedient mega-corporations, who monitor, censor, and control allowable thoughts and behaviors on behalf of government and/or the ruling class.

As Nick Hudson notes, unelected “world leaders” such as Klaus Schwab are most afraid of not having top-down control over all political and economic activity. Schwab does not fear any disobedience from a mega-corporation that has been entrusted as the enforcer of the WEF’s anti-freedom agenda, but he is very fearful of decentralized bodies that are not under his control. Per Mr. Hudson:

The “anti-system” to [Schwab’s] world-destroying authoritarian one is not libertarianism, but decentralization; a world where ideas compete in an open society and many alternative systems are free to flourish or fail.

Roger Kimball has also recently been discussing the importance of Decentralization.

“Our Democracy™: The Democratic Weaponization of Government and the Need for Decentralization” [American Greatness – 01/28/2024]

The overriding imperative, as I have argued before, must be to do everything possible to reduce the place of Washington in the metabolism of American political life. To this end, Trump should endeavor as far as possible to govern the country from outside of Washington. The first symbolic act should be to hold the inauguration someplace other than Washington. I do not insist that it be held in Mar-a-Lago, but why not?

Decentralization goes beyond politics, obviously. Corporate monopolies, oligopolies, and cartels must be broken up so that authentic, competitive marketplaces can return. A greater number of smaller competitors might also rid us of global-celebrity CEOs who have more power and influence than do many heads of state - power and influence that they are using to pursue suppression of personal and economic freedom.

Decentralization rather than libertarianism looks like the best hope for liberty right now.

3 Sorry. Libertarianism is what brought us the unmitigated disaster at the border.

3.4 Free Trade and Migration

We support the removal of governmental impediments to free trade. Political freedom and escape from tyranny demand that individuals not be unreasonably constrained by government in the crossing of political boundaries. Economic freedom demands the unrestricted movement of human as well as financial capital across national borders.

Even an "open society" is not a prerequisite as such.

One decentralized, independent component - a town, a church, an entire country, whatever - can be authoritarian as hell and still be decentralized. That's the point. If you want to live under authoritarianism, you're welcome to it - so long as your authoritarian hellhole doesn't try to impose itself on its neighors.

Where it makes sense or is possible, shop local. There's probably a non-chain (or at worst, regional chain) restaurant or store you can frequent, or a decent local credit union you can use. Sometimes, it's a bad fit but if it isn't, consider shopping local first.

31 this is a major element in fights over concepts now.

decentralization taken to the ultimate extreme is libertarian.
Libertarianism, at least among some factions, is focused first on decentralization, and going on from there. They are taking to heart Murray Rothbard's position that if you abolished the state tomorrow, by the end of the week you will have another one, and that one will be missing all the restraints that had been built into the old one

66 They like to call Americans “anti democratic”.

Take a guess how many times “Democracy” is mentioned in the text of the Declaration of Independence or the Constitution or Bill of Rights?

Not once, that’s how many times. Restricting the vote to landowning males wasn’t going to remain, however “Universal suffrage” doomed the enterprise.

Democracy is a form of government, ostensibly ruled by the masses, results in license, agitation, and discontent. Attitudes toward property communistic. Mob rule. Sound familiar? It should.

Government is now chock full of opprtunistic crooks looting the treasury, exactly as predicted.

Posted by: Common Tater at February 23, 2024 11:20 AM (HYyZn)

67 An even greater threat to Americans are the unaccountable bureaucracies that make laws outside of congress. I don't recall voting for net zero, or X percent lower carbon by 2030. I certainly hope the supreme court plows the Chevron ruling under. I realize that this will force congress to actually vote on things their constituents don't want, or, maybe congress will finally see the cost of going against the American people.

Posted by: Thomas Paine at February 23, 2024 11:21 AM (lTGtQ)

68 On topic, being ruled by your neighbors IS prefereable to being ruled from afar...unless your goal is to ignore onerous laws. One problem with local rulership is that it's harder to be ignored. If you're living in a repressive regime, like CA or MA or WA, state laws are more directly enforced. If they are unjust laws, that's extra pressure and attention you don't want.

In theory, it's easier to make change at the local level but in practice....you might get screwed harder and more personally. I suppose the solution to that is to move but that's a tough pill to swallow for many.

85 If Trump were to manage a reelection I'd still hold the ceremony in the capitol city. If, true to form the Democrats responsible for the steal opt out of attending, it would made good political sense to have them arrested and jetted off to Gitmo without any fanfare.

If they attend, drag them through the mud, verbally, then have them taken to Gitmo.

Either way..... but in all seriousness I think there are people that need to hang for 2020 if for no other reason than a warning to the rest of them.

It's hard to push back against some bureaucrat halfway across the country from you. When the bureaucrat lives in your neighborhood, and shops at the same grocery store...unpopular policies can make his/her life painful. That’s why they should be not only local, but not paid so much that they can avoid living amongst the normies.

A conservative Republican elected as state Attorney General, or to the state Utility Commission, or as Treasurer entrusted with investing state funds, is far more important to our cause than any US Senate seat.
----------
To wit, a headline from last week and after having elected a firmly conservative majority in the 2022 election (they didn't think to steal those seats ... yet):

Arizona Corporation Commission moves to eliminate energy efficiency rules, renewables targets

The proposal is “a big step backwards” for Arizona, said Mark Kresowik, senior policy director for the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy

Cry MOAR, asshoe!

[Pull quote:] "The Arizona Corporation Commission on Feb. 6 initiated a proceeding to eliminate energy efficiency and renewable energy rules that conservative regulators say have cost the state’s electricity consumers billions of dollars but no longer provide much in system benefits."

I'm still convinced that The Republic is a satire of students instead of an earnest attempt to design a perfect society.

Socrates starts with a proposition that's so ridiculous that his students reject it. Socrates then uses a series of logical steps to convince the students of the justness of the proposition. The students then become fervent believers in the proposition.

The pols prowl the halls of power, finance and industry.

Both prey on the people caught up in the gears of the machinery, and neither is challenged so long as they don't intrude on each other's domains. The pols stay off the streets, the hoods stay out of the board rooms.

135 Why do people dislike Kamala Harris? People doubt her ability to govern should something happen to Joe Biden. But when I try to research why, all I've found are vague opinions.

Back in 2020, an interviewee said “She police.” I think that sums up a lot of poorer folks’ opinions.

She has boobs and dark skin. That makes some folks "uncomfortable." I love her. I don't think she'll ever be President, though, and that makes me sad.

Those on the left don't like her because she was an effective district attorney, and the "defund the police" crowd doesn't like that. A lot of animosity toward her has been unfairly pushed by the illustrious "libural media". VP Harris is capable and smart. There is no doubt she has been unfairly treated.

You see the way women are treated. It took them 30 years to smear Hillary down. Now they’ve got the playbook, they start right on Kamala. We live in a patriarchy and one of the myriad consequences is women are judged far more harshly.

I really feel bad for Hillary. We should never have had that rapist sick fuck in office. But it was so much easier to demonize her because she is a woman.

230 OT: Lenten lunch win. Made a French Toast casserole with my kid's homemade PB (she makes it salty with almost no sugar from Aldi's jarred peanuts - but it can't hang around forever), hugely discounted coconut egg nog, eggs, a small amount of sugar (b/c egg nog is presweetened), and spices (cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger) on crusts of white bread. I made the PB sandwiches, diced them, and through them in the "custard" overnight and baked this morning and served.

It was delicious. The PB saltiness was perfect. Some had a drizzle of maple syrup, some went plain...and a 9x13 is all gone.

And it's nice to have a double protein lunch before soup dinner b/c I struggle with protein on Lent days if I'm not going for fish (and even sometimes then)...

236 "States' rights" has additional baggage in consideration of the Declaration of Independence and the distinction between rights and powers.
"Rights" are inherent and transcendent aspects of the People.
"Powers" are delegated to government by the People for the sole purpose of securing "Rights".
If "Rights" are granted to government in any manner, they will invariably be used against the People.
Start with something "minor" like eminent domain. If it is accepted that government has a Right to claim land rather than merely a Power to do so, then the Right of the People to their property becomes meaningless.
Extend that to a Right of the government to protect from violence, harsh language, religion, and so forth, and the Bill of Rights evaporates.

Federalism is fine. But it does not require states to have Rights, merely their proper delegated and recognized Powers.
More importantly, federalism is a state level thing. Decentralization affects things with a state. There is no aspect of federalism or the Constitution that protects the counties and towns of a state from the state governments. Decentralization is needed in addition to federalism, rather than instead of it.

Well that's where things get messy because the Bill of Rights is supposed to override state laws. So in the case of guns, no I'm not for a state say banning handguns, even though I think we should defer to states.

But for the record, I'm 100% okay with abortion being decided by states and then MOVING ON from this issue. My guess is 45+ states will have pretty liberal abortion laws post Roe vs Wade. Likely worse than they were during Roe vs Wade. In a weird irony, I think overturning that probably hurt the pro-life movement.

In a Representative democracy, the polity has the right to be "wrong", as long as they keep it to themselves.

For instance, when I was young into middle age, we still had blue laws against stores in general being open on Sunday because that is what the voters wanted. (it is changed now because THAT is what the voters want). In the previous case, I tried to persuade the voters to allow stores to be open, I didn't try to impose this value onto a majority that thought otherwise. I could deal by driving to the next county over. The reach of my county's voters didn't go that far.

Is she a white woman? I would guess that she's a racist. If you talked to her for five seconds on this subject she would no doubt offer up that poor women of color are disproportionately bla bla bla. But what she means is, they're too poor and stupid to raise kids.

GnuBreed's own daughter posted a death notice here this week, under his nic. And GnuBreed himself told us a few weeks ago that he was entering hospice care, and that the end was near for him.

We also need to get Captain Hate added to the Absent Friends list.

385 The problem with liberterians is that they allowed the dopers to take over the Party. the idea originally was the
same idea the founders had. the minimum gov possible to maintain he state and national security. A party that cares nothing about the gov but drug use is worthless.

I wish people would drop "authoritarian" when what they really mean is "totalitarian." The former is Franco, the latter, Lenin. Easy choice, that.
Posted by: Eeyore at February 23, 2024 11:57 AM (1bNHn)

I've always looked at it as authoritarians just demand that you obey. You can think what you want, and if you don't like the ruling regime, you're free to leave. Just don't DO anything against the law.

Totalitarians on the other hand, they insist that you believe. They don't just want to control your actions, they also want to control your thoughts. And don't even think about leaving or they'll put a bullet in your back.

You can tell the totalitarian states by looking at which direction the machine guns are pointed.
