Cellphone Services Throughout the Country Experienced Mass Outages Today;
Is It a Cyberattack?

The outage is affecting 911 calls.

The outage seems to be affecting mostly big cities on the east coast, including Montreal.

The NY Post:

A major cellphone outage affected users across the US early Thursday -- even stopping some police departments from being able to receive 911 calls.

AT&T seemed to have experienced the largest number of issues, with nearly 32,000 reports at around 4:30 a.m., according to data from DownDetector, which tracks outages by collating status reports from sources including user-submitted errors on its platform.

More than 800 service outages were also reported on T-Mobile and Verizon, although a spokesperson for the latter put it down to users reporting problems trying to call people with other services.

Others reported issues on smaller carriers including Boost Mobile, Consumer Cellular and Straight Talk Wireless.

The problems extended from New York, Boston, and Atlanta on the East Coast to Houston, Dallas, Los Angeles, Seattle, and San Francisco -- and even to Montreal in Canada.

...

On Verizon and T-Mobile, spokespersons told The Post their networks are operating normally.

Some fear this was a cyberattack:

Confirmation from around the US on a nationwide cellular network outage. Seems to have affected @ATT first, then later reports from other phones on @TMobile @Verizon and more. I can't imagine this is incompetence or a single node failure. Concerned it could be a #cyberattack.

Maro Roobles is warning that the Chinese have the capability to take out much more than our phone systems.

GOP Sen. Marco Rubio warned on social media that the AT&T outage affecting tens of thousands of Americans pales in comparison to what a potential China cyberattack would look like.

"I don't know the cause of the AT&T outage," the Florida Republican posted on X on Thursday. "But I do know it will be 100 times worse when #China launches a cyber attack on America on the eve of a #Taiwan invasion."

"And it won't be just cell service they hit, it will be your power, your water and your bank."

Single node? Probably not, no.

Incompetence? Perfectly possible. Probably not a single piece of incompetence at one moment in time, but various problem all cresting together when the final piece fell. That's entirely possible.

Possibly. Comms and finance seem like likely targets. The problem is that it's very hard to do at scale and all at once and these aren't passive targets. The big telco and finance companies employ a lot of people and staggering amounts of technology to protect against attacks. Nobody is objectively very good at it, but they are relatively very good at it. To pull off big coordination requires known attack vectors and that those vectors *remain open* until you're ready to exploit them. That is not something you can depend on.

I am not poo-pooing the premise - it is likely true - but it will be a hard thing to accomplish at scale. Energy and water infrastructure should be fairly safe unless the operators do something profoundly stupid like put control surfaces on the internet. Taking down the utility's systems will effect payroll, billing, payments, etc., but won't stop the dynamos and pumps. Shouldn't, anyway, unless they were real stupid.

Worked for a development company back in the ealy 00's named NetRat... which was a series of tools designed to map everything on your network... down to open ports, and slap it into a database so you could see anything that changed.

With proper credentials, it could even get into you computers and do file searches... and even tell you what updates you had installed... and what had changed since the last scan.

Sadly... we could not keep up with all the changes companies were making, and our angle investor ran out of patience.

One of two ways, I suspect. One is that it was a 15-year term, which is not unheard of for student loans. 10 is more common (or was, when I was in school) but some were 15.

The other is forbearance or deferment. You negotiate and quit paying for a while (you're broke, lost your job, etc.), accepting recapitalized interest as the cost of not paying. The balance will increase during that time, and set you back on repayment.

Well you'd hope that the closet computer can't bring down the net.

In grad school the mini-frame for our group one day was running incredibly slowly...like the monitor echo of a keystroke took minutes, nobody could work. Went down to the main terminal, found that one of the login jobs was consuming all the CPU. Traced it to a terminal upstairs that had a handmade null-modem device (swap transmit and rcv lines between devices). And the building maintenance had waxed the floor with 20 gallons of wax that had nailed the cables to the floor and apparently produced some wonky input simulating login keystrokes incessantly. Cracked it out of the wax and replaced the null and everything was fine.

Heh. Had this happen to me. Well, similar.

My office went offline. We could still get to the home office (e.g., the link was up), but no internet and no VoIP. We redirected all routing through the home office (expensive from a latency standpoint, but it got most of the shit online) while we were on the phone with the vendor.

Well, the vendor (Level3, in that case) made a routing error and was dropping all of our traffic to the internet. The head of the network team with my company asked his admins why we didn't fail over to the alternate line. Well, we did. It just had the same problem.

The alternate was CenturyLink. When that system was set up, they were separate companies. CenturyLink bought Level3 and integrated the networks. Our redundant link wasn't redundant anymore, and nobody noticed.

Water treatment is in the process of converting to SCADA across the industry. They have plenty of remote assets that have to transmit data from little (radio I guess?) towers. When I was in grad school they made a PC building network for all the profs and such and our 'activist' IT professor used to put all sorts of things in the login scripts for the system, mortgage reminders, jokes. I didn't use the system much, but I was annoyed at the delay to get a prompt from this trash so I asked him to make it so I didn't have to look at that. So he added a "picky" mode and I turned it on.

A few weeks later he added something that crashed into the system autoexec and nobody could log in, even him. Except me. Now I didn't have access rights to much but I did find I could access a directory searched before the offending program and renamed a program that ran and dumped it there which fixed the problem.

343 I never had to solve a hardare issue, but I recall a software program I cleaned up. There was a report my company in CO had maintained for years. It took *hours* to run. My supervisor asked me to take a look.

The programmer had set a relationship between two tables of about 1000 records each . . . and then wrote the program to scan *each record in both*. 1000 x 1000 = 1,000,000 examinations of the records.

My code said to look for a particular condition in Table B that matched the current record in A. If no match was found, start over with the next A record. If there was a match, then do [block of code]. And there were only about thirty records, we knew, that would match. The report ran in a couple of minutes, and I looked like a genius. (Until I got laid off the next month.)

366 Criticizing Bragg, Arizona Refuses to Send Murder Suspect to New York. Source: New York Times

On Feb. 8, a woman was found dead in a Manhattan hotel room, bludgeoned to death with an iron.

This week, the police announced that a 26-year-old man suspected of committing the crime had been arrested in Arizona, where he was accused of stabbing another woman a few days after the homicide in New York. A Manhattan prosecutor flew to Arizona to discuss bringing the man back to face charges.

In most homicide cases across the country, it would be a routine extradition. But on Wednesday, an Arizona prosecutor refused, saying she did not believe Alvin L. Bragg, Manhattan’s district attorney, could be trusted to keep him behind bars.

389 There's a fun prank where you take a picture of someone's cell phone. When they leave, text them the picture and tell them they forgot their phone. Wait for them to come back and try to get the phone, the phone on which they received the text about forgetting their phone.

Can I call you back? I misplaced my phone somewhere.

6 out of 10. Great tension, but poor resolution. I hated the Bardem figure for a long time, people blabbing about how he's just some embodiment of Fate, etc. I loved the way Jones handles his .45, it's tight and accurate. The entry into the motel room is a masterpiece.

I decided the entire movie is decided on a fairly overlooked moment: the dying Narco soldier asks Llewellyn for water, and he lies; he says he doesn't have any, but he does. He denies a dying man a final drink. That's what seals Llewellyns fate. He doesn't find his own humanity in allowing a dying man a drink he could easily have given, and therefore enters into the World of Chigurgh.

397 I think that's the one where Jonny Fever and Venus get sent to the tower to broadcast from there, and that's where the bomb is. Fever was paranoid around this all being a plot by the phone company and bugs out and Venus chases him out the door before it blows.

That's ridiculous!

Speaking during a sentencing hearing for a Capitol attack defendant who’d previously pleaded guilty to assaulting a police officer and civil disorder, Walton also said that unlike Trump, former Democratic presidential nominee Al Gore “was a man about it” when he conceded the contested 2000 election.
Gore, then the incumbent vice president, conceded the 2000 election to George W. Bush after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in the Bush camp’s favor, ending a recount of the vote in Florida.

402 > My code said to look for a particular condition in Table B that matched the current record in A. If no match was found, start over with the next A record. If there was a match, then do [block of code]. And there were only about thirty records, we knew, that would match. The report ran in a couple of minutes, and I looked like a genius. (Until I got laid off the next month.)

Scan table b and put the "condition" of each record m in B into a hash table. Then foreach record n in A, find the condition you intend to match in B, lookup O(1). Then instead of O(n*m), you get O(n).

Don't recall Llewellyn having any water when he entered the killing field. I do know why Chigurh didn't kill Ed Tom. Its because he left his dime on the removed room vent.

NICE!

In his decision, Carney granted the defendants’ motion to dismiss, agreeing that Rundo and Boman were being selectively prosecuted, while “far-left extremist groups, such as Antifa" were not.

"Prosecuting only members of the far right and ignoring members of the far left leads to the troubling conclusion that the government believes it is permissible to physically assault and injure Trump supporters to silence speech,” Carney wrote in his order.

"There seems to be little doubt that Defendants, or at least some members of RAM, engaged in criminal violence. But they cannot be selected for prosecution because of their repugnant speech and beliefs over those who committed the same violence with the goal of disrupting political events.”

414 Many years ago I worked $DAYJOB at AT&T. Whenever there is a problem with AT&T one should always assume a mistake before anything else. This outage is nothing compared to the 4ESS outage that occurred in the late '80s / early '90s. That one, more or less, halted all long distance service in the entire country for a while until it was figured out what was going on. The root cause was a software coding bug.
