THE MORNING RANT: Roundup of the Latest EV Follies (02/16/2024)

EV on Fire for Header - Cartoon.JPG

Legacy automakers made a catastrophically bad bet on EVs. They are now suspending some new product launches, slashing production on existing EV products, canceling multi-billion dollar battery projects, pivoting to hybrids, and redeploying employees from underutilized EV factories to plants that produce the vehicles that consumers actually desire, e.g. those with gasoline engines.

“The Six Months That Short-Circuited the Electric-Vehicle Revolution; Automakers went all in on battery power, but buyers have proven more hesitant” [WSJ – 02/14/2024]

Some auto executives acknowledge they got ahead of the market with overzealous demand projections.

“Some auto executives” could have avoided billions of dollars in unnecessary losses if they had talked to me before committing so heavily to the EV fantasy.

[Ford CEO Jim] Farley and other industry CEOs are still confident that EVs will eventually take off, albeit at a slower pace than initially envisioned. But for now, the massive miscalculation has left the industry in a bind, facing a potential glut of EVs and half-empty factories while still having to meet stricter environmental regulations globally. “Ultimately, we will follow the customer,” GM Chief Executive Mary Barra told analysts this month.

It’s good that Mary Barra is now acknowledging that General Motors has no choice but to “follow the customer.” Unfortunately, she had previously promised to take GM all-electric in barely a decade, mistakenly believing that GM has the capability of leading the customer down that path, rather than following the customer. GM does not have that capability.

I’ve previously covered how Ford is having to retrench from its failing EV programs. But as noted in the quote up above from the Wall Street Journal, Ford’s destructively inept CEO, Jim Farley, is still a believer in the EV transition. He is clearly willing to destroy Ford Motor Company in pursuit of the globalist anti-carbon agenda.

So how did Ford’s EV division fare in 2023? “Ford’s electric-vehicle business lost nearly $4.7 billion in 2023 and could lose another $5 billion this year, but CEO Jim Farley argues the automaker is undervalued…”

A ship that is taking on water is rarely “undervalued.” How do you “undervalue” a business that is willing to lose $10 billion in just two years on a product that customers don’t want?

Ford sold 72,608 electric vehicles in the US in 2023. Its $4.7 billion loss on EVs averages out to over $64,000 for every electric Ford sold in the US in 2023. Ford’s Board of Directors will have to address the crisis in their CEO office sooner rather than later.

*****

Even Californians Are Giving up on EVs.

In “EV friendly” California, total electric vehicle sales declined in the third quarter (Q3) of 2023 from the number sold in Q2, and then the bottom fell out in Q4, with EV sales declining another 10%, or about 11,000 cars.

“EV sales start to fall in California; Consecutive quarters of falling EV sales could derail state's zero-emission vehicle transition target” [Automotive News – 01/31/2024]

The pain was spread among all EV manufacturers, with Tesla’s sales decreasing by about 5,000 units, and the other manufacturers combining for a decline of about 6,000 units.

“Tesla California registrations fall for the first time since the pandemic” [Reuters – 01/31/2024]

Registrations of Tesla dropped 10% in the last quarter of 2023, the first fall in more than three years in the state, which is one of the most important markets for the electric carmaker and considered a national trend setter.

Is it possible that Q4 EV sales plummeted in California because total vehicle sales also fell? Nope. Not the case.

This was the fifth consecutive quarterly increase in new car sales in the state. The Q4 2023 pace of new car sales showed a slight acceleration compared with Q3, posting a 6% increase.

Sales of the various forms of hybrid are rising rapidly as even California car buyers are starting to reject EVs.

*****

Speaking of Tesla…

We’ve talked a lot in these EV updates about how part of the appeal of Teslas is the “exclusive” hassle of owning one. Here’s another exclusive hassle, the new Cybertruck is prone to rusting and needs lots of swabbing. Just a few months after the first ones were delivered, customers are already complaining that the “stainless steel” isn’t stainless.

“Cybertruck Owners Say They're Already Rusting; So much for ‘stainless’ steel” [Futurism – 02/13/2024]

It's only been a couple months since Tesla started delivering its long-awaited Cybertruck to customers. And as expected, its unusual stainless steel exoskeleton, which can ward off bullets but not stains, is already turning out to be a headache for owners.

"Just picked up my Cybertruck today," they wrote. "The advisor specifically mentioned the cybertrucks develop orange rust marks in the rain and that required the vehicle to be buffed out."

Tesla super-fans want to believe that the Cybertruck is going to steal a lot of business from traditional full size pickup trucks. It won’t. The Cybertruck will likely be popular with the existing Tesla demographic, serving in the role of an electric El Camino, but heavy-duty pickup truck buyers are not going to buy a vehicle about which one Cybertuck owner wrote, “I think as long as you don't drive it in the rain, or get it wet, it will be fine.”

Consumer Reports’ “Talking Cars” video series reviewed the new Chevrolet Blazer EV (embedded in the linked story below), and the best they could say about the car was that ”the door handles worked,” which was more than they could say about the seat belts and floor mats.

“Consumer Reports absolutely shreds new Chevy Blazer EV In negative review” [Torque News – 01/24/2024]

The problems are not all related to “software.” The testing staff found that the rear seatbelts were unusable, and the crew at Consumer Reports had to repair them before they would work. It took two team members, one of whom is a mechanic, to resolve the issue. There was also a problem with the front floor mats that required repair.

Looking for bright spots to offer some balance to the negative review, the team resorted to saying the brakes felt “normal,” and that the door handles worked.

Chevrolet (General Motors) was extremely proficient at making mass-market gas-powered cars, but their government apparatchik CEO decided the company should abandon their core competency and transition instead into being a manufacturer of an entirely different product. Now the hopelessly distracted company cannot even reliably manufacture vehicles with a functioning floor mat.

*****

Three years ago Volvo announced that it would be fully electric by 2030. Their passion against ICE vehicles was so strong that their press release made it clear that they wouldn’t even produce hybrids, which still use gasoline.

“Volvo Cars to be fully electric by 2030” [Volvo press release - 3/02/2021]

Volvo Cars is committed to becoming a leader in the fast-growing premium electric car market and plans to become a fully electric car company by 2030. By then, the company intends to only sell fully electric cars and phase out any car in its global portfolio with an internal combustion engine, including hybrids.

Volvo also entered into a joint venture a few years ago with its parent company, Geely Auto of China, to manufacture EVs under the name Polestar.

Unsurprisingly, it’s all falling apart now.

“Volvo, An Early Electric Car Adopter, Cuts Off Funding for Its EV Affiliate” [WSJ – 02/01/2024]

Volvo Car said it won’t provide further funding to Polestar, the electric-car maker it created with Volvo’s Chinese owner Geely — the latest EV retrenchment by the global auto industry.

*****

Speaking of Polestar…

Many of us had a good laugh at Hertz’s $245 million dollar hit when it finally decided to stop the bleeding on its Tesla debacle. Hertz dumped 20,000 of its Teslas and changed direction on its previous promise to purchase 100,000 Teslas.

But Hertz had also promised to buy 65,000 Polestar EVs, some of which had already worked their way into Hertz’s fleet. Hertz will not be fulfilling that promise.

“Hertz will stop buying EVs from Polestar, too” [The Verge – 02/05/2024]

[Polestar CEO Thomas] Ingenlath told Financial Times that Polestar agreed to waive the requirement to buy all 65,000 vehicles as long as Hertz agreed not to sell off its current stock of EVs too quickly or cheaply.

In other words, there is such a lack of demand for used EVs that Polestar fears the impact of collapsing prices if more than a few of its unwanted vehicles hit the market at the same time.

*****

With Hertz being mismanaged by a CEO who does not understand either his product or his customers, you will not be surprised to learn that Hertz stock has fallen by more than 60% in the past year, from $20 to less than $8 per share.

So who is the CEO of Hertz?

Stephen Scherr is Chair and Chief Executive Officer of Hertz. He is focused on transforming the iconic American company into a global leader in shared mobility, electrification, and digital-first customer experience. Prior to joining Hertz in February 2022, Stephen spent nearly three decades at Goldman Sachs.

With Scherr’s resume, his global-communist agenda, and degrees from Princeton and Harvard, poor Hertz doesn’t stand a chance with him at the helm.

And, of course, as Hertz hemorrhages money and its stock price collapses, Mr. Scherr is looting the company. “Hertz CEO Stephen Scherr’s total compensation of $182 million made him the third highest–paid chief executive in the U.S., according to executive-pay-data and analytics company C-Suite Comp used in a report from the Wall Street Journal.

A reader from Minnesota wrote me the following recently:

“My wife and I are friends with a very wealthy couple who recently replaced both of their high-end luxury cars, which were only used for city driving, with two Teslas. During the recent deep freeze their home chargers were taking so much power from their house that the breaker would trip if they tried to open their garage door. So, despite all the tech in a Tesla (and it is pretty awesome - I took a ride in someone else’s Tesla recently) they couldn’t even get out of their own garage without raising the door manually!

Mind you, our friends have their Teslas parked in their garage and plugged in ALL THE TIME, yet they were still not getting a full charge during the deep freeze. They also don’t drive their Teslas long-distance. I’d be surprised if they ever used 50% of their charge on a daily basis. The farthest they might go in one direction, pretty much, is to the airport and back. They use their Teslas as a wealthy couple could and should: for local errands and shopping, visiting friends, going to the club, and to the local office for work. Everything within a “close circle.”

After being quite pleased with their Teslas this summer — they were raving about them then — they are now very concerned about owning these cars. And if you know any very wealthy people, many of that class do not like any inconvenience … at all.

I’m sure the bread winner of this couple has already looked into the resale value of their Teslas. And I'm guessing he’s not happy. I expect a Mercedes and a BMW to be in their garage instead of those Teslas in 2024. I will definitely let you know if that happens.

I’m calling this couple the “Bellwethers.” I’ve asked my correspondent to keep me informed if/when the Bellwethers sell one (or both) of the Teslas, and what they replace it/them with.

*****

Electric vehicles are significantly heavier than their gasoline-powered equivalents, up to 50% heavier in some cases. Aside from damaging roads and putting parking garages at risk, the force of a moving EV is also more than many guardrails can withstand.

“Crash tests indicate nation’s guardrail system can’t handle heavy electric vehicles” [AP – 01/31/2024]

Last fall, engineers at Nebraska’s Midwest Roadside Safety Facility watched as an electric-powered pickup truck hurtled toward a guardrail installed on the facility’s testing ground on the edge of the local municipal airport. The nearly 4-ton (3.6 metric ton) 2022 Rivian R1T tore through the metal guardrail and hardly slowed until hitting a concrete barrier yards away on the other side.

Barriers along the medians of divided highways serve to keep out of control vehicles from crossing over into oncoming traffic, thus preventing high-speed, head-on collisions. That simple safety mechanism has saved a tremendous number of lives. Thanks to the “EV transition,” we’ll just have to get used to mangled cars and mangled bodies due to head-on highway collisions again.

*****

There is plenty more bad news out there for those still clinging to the fantasy about an all-EV future, but this is enough for today.

Have a great weekend.

They didn't get ahead of the market, they went all in on the grift from Uncle Sugar. Forget what the consumer wants.

Look at Toyota. They have hybrids, sure. But they have cars. Not just SUVs. Ford/GM/Chrysler can't say that. Toyota is growing. US auto manufacturers? Making money but losing their collective asses on EVs.

And since the automakers have been bailed out (sometimes >1) by Uncle Sam - what is their downside?

18 If you got rid of CAFE, it would create a renaissance for the traditional Big 3. When you buy something like a full size SUV or truck, a lot of that price is to build the compliance shit nobody wants and get it off the lots. That's part of why you now have $80k plus trucks and SUVs.

It;s funny that even "socialist" countries don't have such a crazy system for regulating the auto industry where there is an "average" fuel economy.

Nixon really fucked up cars with CAFE.

47 The lack of understanding of the consumer when it comes to the auto industry is astonishing. For decades we heard about American's "love affair" with automobiles. Whether it was sports cars or truck or SUVs or luxury cars there was an acknowledge that Americans and many other around the world saw autos as an extension of their desires and the open road as a ticket to adventure. Car companies knew this and catered to it.

EVs where never going to be anything other than a boutique industry for those who saw them as their choice to express their desires. The belief that everyone was going to accept a vehicle that didn't support their desires and lifestyle was not based in reality and one of the dumbest moves I've ever seen an industry make.

78 From the Art thread - It wasn’t power steering necessarily that was the show stopper for female drivers - though it was a factor. It was the manual crank engine starter.

It was tricky, and required upper body strength. The ignition timing was set to a late or retarded position. Engine kickback had a nasty habit of causing the crank to break fingers or wrists.

In fact, the impetus to invent the electric engine starter was because a good friend of the head of General Motors had been killed helping a stranded female motorist, apparently. The engine kicked back, and the crank handle broke his jaw. He died about a week later. Kettering was put on the job.

79 Electric vehicles are significantly heavier than their gasoline-powered equivalents, up to 50% heavier in some cases. Aside from damaging roads and putting parking garages at risk, the force of a moving EV is also more than many guardrails can withstand.

As a side note, I did a study with one of the larger tire companies in North America. If you happen to buy and EV, be prepared to replace your tires at three times the rate of an ICE.

How about you also admit regret for the not fighting the various nudges and accepting financial incentives from Biden and Congress, too?
And also incentives you discussed and agreed upon at WEF conferences?

It's not like all these execs woke up and independently thought, hey, I want to lose billions in pursuit of EVs, that'd be sooooo cool!!!

No, they discussed this with globalist leaders and did so as part of a group goal of eliminating non-EV cars -- without sharing or buy-in from the American people -- because they knew better what was good for us the planet, regular people be d@mned. They happily worked with governments to accept financial benefits, and the sale of fleets of EVs to fed/state/city governments, in exchange for meeting certain EV production goals.

No, you don't get to just shrug and say "My bad!"

82 I'd consider a hybrid vehicle if I liked the car. I really would. But invariably, GM teams an underpowered ICE unit with the battery, so that the car is sluggish on gas power. My Buick Regal, not a heavy car, had the 2.4L four-cylinder engine, not a turbo, 180 hp. I had to downshift the auto transmission to get some extra oomph to climb the fairly-steep bridge I use every morning. The 300-hp six in the heavier LaCrosse handles the same thing without my noticing it.

Guess which engine GM offered in the hybrid LaCrosse? Yeah.

It's much worse than that.

The study found that essentially, road damage was related to the 4th power of the relative loads. That means that if one vehicle carries a load of 1,500 pounds per axle and another carries a load of 3,000 pounds on each axle, the road damage caused by the heavier vehicle is not twice as much, but 2 to the 4th power as much (2x2x2x2 = 16 times as much road damage as the lighter vehicle).

Hertz biggest problem with their Tesla's was mileage. They were rented with unlimited mileage and ride share drivers jumped on it. Putting on 40000 miles in one year, 3 times what is normal for rentals. They did that because the Tesla's had low operating costs

Here in Central CA, most of the chargers are set up all the way at the far end of the parking lots. Most likely because the land owners saw the price tag for running the underground power line to each charger.

On the other hand, the local National Guard armory has four chargers along with great big motorized solar panels that track the sun. All four are in the first row of parking spaces. You might as well save a couple of hundred K for each parking space by putting up a sign that says "Unit Commander's Parking Only". The effect would be the same.

Hey, I'm happy for people who have chosen to purchase an EV. I can understand having one as an additional city car.

However, we've been living in an environment of government nudge, nudge, nudging people to make the "right" choices since Obama took office. The whole point of the "nudge" is to eliminate the "bad" choices (e.g. get automakers to reduce/eliminate producing them so you can't find or afford the car you want) in order to give people the impression they chose the "right" choice (EVs). People here hostile to EVs are reacting to *that* - we've seen this play out for years with all the talk from globalist and government people about conversion to EVs as if we'd all already agreed to it, that it is a foregone conclusion this will happen. Granholm has been particularly clear about this.

Hopefully, the garage will warm up without burning down. It's one of those tall heaters that fall over all the time.
Probably should check once in a while, or just get out there and get to work.

To give an idea of what the electronics enable, Toyota's newest gas engines output 40% of the energy produced by burning the gas to the wheels. That's roughly double what pre-computerized cars could pull off.

-----------

I've been driving old Gen 2 Priuses (2004-2007) for the past six years for work (85,000 miles/year).

I buy them with around 150,000 miles on them and always get to at least 300,000 miles before junking them (got 465,000 miles on one before it threw a rod when I believe my Walmart oil change was botched and not enough oil added).

Get between 43 and 47 MPG on the highway -- and more in town. Relatively low maintenance (e.g. rarely need brake jobs since the design is regenerative. Biggest maintenance expenses are directly related to hybrid battery (usually needs replacing every 8 years or so) and it's cooling system (pump, control valve, and/or fan failures).

Only other negative issue is the older ones drink A LOT OF OIL, so it must be checked and replenished frequently.

Oh, and suspension is horrible -- and road gators (blown big rig tires wreak havoc on the low clearance.

there is two things going on, trucks and SUVs have a less restrictive standard under CAFE than cars, and there is that footprint rule that determines if a vehicle is required to comply with mileage requirement. It is hard to get a sedan as big as a Ram 350 or a Toyota Tacoma which are now the size of a battleship
It is all screwed up because of the gas problems in the 70's which were caused mostly by Jimmah screwing the international markets and pissing on OPEC. I will not cry when he passes, though I might feel sorry for his daughter's loss

308 I think Biden is bluffing about statehood to try to impress his backers here. It's a stupid bluff that will backfire spectacularly, but that's not going to stop him.
Here's why: who's going to lead it? Abbas? The Palestinians in the West Bank hate him almost as much as the ones in Gaza do, plus he's 88 years old with no designated successor. Is he going to pick Hamas to lead it? Yeah right. Is Biden going to create some "election" when there is no process to hold one? Or is he going to pick a name out of a hat and try to impose it in them? The entire concept is idiotic.

And snow country: I was recently in UT and CO, and can affirm that 1) there were very few EVs parked at ski hills, and 2) there were even fewer charging stations up at ski places or elsewhere up in the mountains. 376 All of the problems with EVs are engineering problems.

Steam cars faded because there was a typhoid fever epidemic, and the sanitary commissions filled in all the free horse-water ditches that were needed to replenish the boilers. I suppose you could call that an "engineering problem," too.

The continent-wide lack of unicorn fart rechargers is an engineering problem, which we can all solve together by simply building a second, parallel, electricity grid as big as the one we have now, out of our sock drawer money. "Engineering."

381 There are 120,061 gas stations in the USA.
Let make the math easy and say 10 pumps each.
1,200,610 gas pumps nationwide.
There are 125,000 electric chargers in the USA.

1. Growing this 10X is probably a 20 to 30 year project.
2. I do not think most station have the electrical infrastructure to add more than 1 or 2 chargers. (super chargers take >30kw transformers).
3. I do not think most current retail locations could even get their local electrical providers to double or triple the power available of that section of the grid.

384 Nice Rant.

FACT SHEET: Obama Administration Announces Federal and Private Sector Actions to Accelerate Electric Vehicle Adoption in the United States
The Obama Administration is taking responsible steps to combat climate change, increase access to clean energy technologies, and reduce our dependence on oil. That is why, today, on the heels of the United States Department of Energy’s (DOE) first-ever Sustainable Transportation Summit, the Administration is announcing an unprecedented set of actions from the Federal government, private sector, and states, as well as a new framework for collaboration for vehicle manufacturers, electric utilities, electric vehicle charging companies, and states, all geared towards accelerating the deployment of electric vehicle charging infrastructure and putting more electric vehicles on the road. The collaboration, forged by the White House in partnership with DOE and the Department of Transportation (DOT), the Airforce and the Army, and the Environmental Protection Agency, and is centered on a set of Guiding Principles to Promote Electric Vehicles and Charging Infrastructure that nearly 50 organizations are signing on to today.

387 I have occasion to translate for FCA (Fiat Chrysler Automobiles), which now pretty much includes all the famous Italian brands: Alfa Romeo, Lancia etc. So I have translated a lot of EV material regarding salesperson training, repair manuals, info for dealerships, etc. These texts have been an eyeopener, and let's just say, I think I'll live out the rest of my life without ever owning an EV. The last cutie I translated involved the new feature of a sound to warn pedestrians there's a stonking great car looming up behind them...a weird feature of EVs is they are soundless. Creepy.

390 There are basically two kinds of articles on EVs today:

1. Articles about how EVs are no good and nobody is buying them, that should end with *except Tesla.

2. Articles about how self-driving is hopeless, that should end with *and rockets can't really land themselves and be reused, either.

Posted by: Ray Van Dune at February 16, 2024 12:53 PM (8Ta2Y)

391 Never EVER buy a used EV. The life of the entire vehicle is tied to the life of the battery. The cost to replace the battery can reach to $20K-$30K. If the car is out of warranty - it is worthless.

Warranties on the battery might be the earlier of 8 years or 100,000 miles. So, a 3 year old EV has only 5 yrs left in it AT MOST. After that, a repair costs more than the car is worth. Also, charge performance in those last years is extremely poor.

EVs are already a dead end. They are all just zombies at this point.

392 Toyota has been very deliberate about EV's, opting for a big push on hybrids, but that's about all.

Speaking of manufacturers following customers, take a look at the Toyota IMV 0. It's a $10,000 truck with a modular design that's going to sell like gangbusters in many parts of the world. It won't, of course, be sold in the US.

393 This just in from another Vail, Colorado (Ski Country) friend who read your article…

…I’ve got a CRV Hybrid (non plug in). Gets mid 30s mpg overall (up to 45-50 just around town) and love it. But decided long ago to keep it until they get a lot of the below issues worked out.

Several Vail condos here that have underground parking (lots of snow fall here) have been told by their insurance companies they cannot allow EV’s to be parked in the condo garages due to the fire danger. Of course the big Ski Vail parking structures have all the EV chargers on the lower levels.

I read the Vail, Fire Department is very concerned if there was an EV fire on the Interstate 70 or in the Eisenhower (I-70) tunnels because all they can do is try and contain the fire until it burns itself out. Reportedly an EV fire takes up to 30,000 gallons of water to contain (summer Colorado forest fires?) Irreparable damage that could close the I-70 tunnel for months?)

394 "Sales of the various forms of hybrid are rising rapidly as even California car buyers are starting to reject EVs."

Ford offers the little 4-door pickup branded as "Maverick" in either 4 cylinder ICE or with hybrid ICE/battery They simply can't keep up with demand for the hybrid -- can't get batteries, electronics, etc.

I've bought two. The '22 model had all the problems associated with prototypes. Traded for the '24, which is smooooooth. Trade value, at present, is high. Not sure how value holds as the supply meets the market and the batteries wear out. I guess we'll see.

396 My understanding is that federal law will impose an EV quota on manufacturers. I don't remember the ratio for certain but I believe it is 30%. This is not a sales quota; it is a manufacturing quota. Failing to meet that quota will result in a $22K fine per vehicle. So, assuming low/no demand for and sales of EVs, a manufacturer has an interesting choice: either increase production of EVs no one is buying or pay $22K per EV not produced, which is a sure fire way to help the consumer.

Tinfoil Hat Time: Assuming these superbrainiacs intend the results their policies bring, it is clear that the SBs don't want us to be able to travel. Your choice is a vehicle that won't work or a vehicle that works for a price artificially inflated by the fine financed at crazy interest rates. And if everything goes as planned, the automobile manufacturing industry will be functionally destroyed. The good news is you have no carbon belching vehicles to buy and will have saved the planet. Good job.

Airbus however is hamstrung by the beginning disintegration of the EU - Britains pullout made the supply chain a bit less tenable, and the entire flimsiness of the EU as Germany continues to kind of vanish. Airbus is on borrowed time. Boeing knows it, though you are right, the Boeing BOD needs to fire the entire C suite and get some new blood in there.
