The Armorer On the Rust Set Says That All During His Firearms Safety Training, Alec Baldwin Was Texting and FaceTiming with Other People

Alec Baldwin spent time texting and FaceTiming during firearms training. On October 21, 2021, Baldwin fired a prop gun that shot and killed the film's director of photography Halyna Hutchins."She was my friend! My wife and I had dinner with what's-her-name! My wife ordered pupusas and pollo con arroz! Even though we were at Outback Steakhouse! It's just what she does, I can't stop her!"

Gutierrez-Reed held a training session for the dozen or so actors whose roles called for them to handle guns, but Baldwin was unable to attend. "I was very impressed by the training session," Halls testified to the OSHB. "She made sure that all those actors were holding the gun properly, pulling it out of their holster. They all shot blanks." The armorer claimed that she held a private training session for Baldwin at the church.... The armorer said that Baldwin spent much of the planned session on his phone texting, FaceTiming his wife and children, and having his assistant shoot video of him for his social media.
The article doesn't say if Baldwin agreed to that additional time. Based on context, I'd think he didn't agree, but I'm not sure.
After the session, Gutierrez-Reed said she requested the producers grant her more training time, "Particularly with Alec, just because his role is so gun-heavy, and I wanted to make sure he was familiar with his weapon." Gutierrez-Reed testified, "I told them that he needed more time to practice his cross draw because I didn't want him to have complications with it on filming day."

It's come up on the gun thread, and will again: when you're the safety officer, no matter how well you know everybody, you have to be a big enough pr*ck to get everyone's attention and make them actually think about the rules you're doling out. You can't just say the words like a lunch blessing. If she had to stop the training, or hold up the whole production over Mister Wonderful, well, that was her job there.

Did she have to sign off that the training had been completed? If so (it seems like something which would be required to be documented but who knows), did she? If she felt as though he might be unsafe why didn't she refuse to allow him to handle a firearm? Why didn't she quit in protest?

Real guns are cheaper. There are guns that are modified to only shoot blanks but they do need to be specially modified and that costs money. Rust was a production on the cheap.

68 62 There is no reason to have an actual functioning firearm on a movie set. Have you seen some of the cast rubber prop "guns" used for movie and TV production? Up close they are hilariously fake-looking but they look fine on screen. If the director insists on "authenticity" then at a minimum the barrels should be plugged.

Back in the Navy, the officer who thought he was in charge would, from time to time, give an asinine order. We would try to convince them that they were an idiot. Usually that worked because they were inexperienced and not actually stupid but every once in a while.
At that point the watchstander in question would ask for a red pen so that they could log that they were taking this stupid action as the result of a direct order.
I saw the red pen asked for 3 times during my service. The officer always backed down at that point.

My recollection is they weren't actually filming at the time. Baldwin was flashing the muzzle around in a crowd like a dope and I bet he had his finger inside the guard and his hand just twitched the wrong way bumped the trigger just right.

True. Unfortunately it does not prevent idiots from pointing a gun at things they don't intend to shoot, no matter how much training they've received. Clint, Lee van Cleef, and innumerable others have pointed and fired blank-loaded guns at people, animals, cars, and buildings on movie and TV sets. The best plan for movie set gun safety begins with no live ammo anywhere near the sets. Then having a competent and watchful armorer.

A good rule in general but I am willing to acknowledge that movie production may require breaking any number of good rules including traffic safety and jumping off of high places. But breaking a rule must be done consciously and with full knowledge of the potential consequences. It's not the rule-breaking per se that was the problem here. It was the attitude with which it was done.

But he is an actor and an idiot and I think that was well known. The armorer should have treated him like the disobedient 6 year old that he was. I also don't think any safety protocol that relies on actors checking every gun and handling them responsibly is viable. That should be a third level backup done because it is good practice and not because there is ever a possibility of the armorer handing a loaded gun to an actor accidentally.

- Directors like real guns because there is a difference in how the actor reacts. It looks more real. Also with HD all this is becoming more apparent -- the look of the gun, the wince, etc.

You should always clean blank powder asap out of a regular firearm if you fire them as they can lead to rust in the barrel among other things. Safer than using real ones--the difference is muzzle flash is a bit excessive with blanks.
