The Armorer On the Rust Set Says That All During His Firearms Safety Training, Alec Baldwin Was Texting and FaceTiming with Other People

I always said that Alec Baldwin's twitter addiction would get him.

Well I didn't say that but it seems obvious in retrospect. I mean, I should have said it.

We all should have.

Rust film armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed testified that Alec Baldwin spent time texting, FaceTiming, and having his assistant shoot video of him with the gun for Instagram during firearms training, RadarOnline.com has learned.

Alec Baldwin spent time texting and FaceTiming during firearms training.

On October 21, 2021, Baldwin fired a prop gun that shot and killed the film's director of photography Halyna Hutchins.

"She was my friend! My wife and I had dinner with what's-her-name! My wife ordered pupusas and pollo con arroz! Even though we were at Outback Steakhouse! It's just what she does, I can't stop her!"

Gutierrez-Reed held a training session for the dozen or so actors whose roles called for them to handle guns, but Baldwin was unable to attend.

"I was very impressed by the training session," Halls testified to the OSHB. "She made sure that all those actors were holding the gun properly, pulling it out of their holster. They all shot blanks."

The armorer claimed that she held a private training session for Baldwin at the church....

The armorer said that Baldwin spent much of the planned session on his phone texting, FaceTiming his wife and children, and having his assistant shoot video of him for his social media.

Oh, of course. Selfies before safety (TM)!

After the session, Gutierrez-Reed said she requested the producers grant her more training time, "Particularly with Alec, just because his role is so gun-heavy, and I wanted to make sure he was familiar with his weapon."

Gutierrez-Reed testified, "I told them that he needed more time to practice his cross draw because I didn't want him to have complications with it on filming day."

The article doesn't say if Baldwin agreed to that additional time. Based on context, I'd think he didn't agree, but I'm not sure.

G-R is not blameless in this. 68 62 There is no reason to have an actual functioning firearm on a movie set. Have you seen some of the cast rubber prop "guns" used for movie and TV production? Up close they are hilariously fake-looking but they look fine on screen. If the director insists on "authenticity" then at a minimum the barrels should be plugged.
Posted by: Oddbob at February 16, 2024 01:17 PM (sNc8Y)

Real guns are cheaper. There are guns that are modified to only shoot blanks but they do need to be specially modified and that costs money. Rust was a production on the cheap.

Max Armory is a long time seller of blank firing guns of various sorts. They are actually quite a bit cheaper probably due to mfg/sellers having less liability and being made abroad.

Back in the Navy, the officer who thought he was in charge would, from time to time, give an asinine order. We would try to convince them that they were an idiot. Usually that worked because they were inexperienced and not actually stupid but every once in a while.

At that point the watchstander in question would ask for a red pen so that they could log that they were taking this stupid action as the result of a direct order.

I saw the red pen asked for 3 times during my service. The officer always backed down at that point.

Several crew members, including the gaffer Serge Svetnoy, complained about lax gun safety in the days before the fatal accident, when Baldwin aimed the gun at Hutchins during a rehearsal for a scene in an old wooden church. True. Unfortunately it does not prevent idiots from pointing a gun at things they don't intend to shoot, no matter how much training they've received. Clint, Lee van Cleef, and innumerable others have pointed and fired blank-loaded guns at people, animals, cars, and buildings on movie and TV sets. The best plan for movie set gun safety begins with no live ammo anywhere near the sets. Then having a competent and watchful armorer.

But he is an actor and an idiot and I think that was well known. The armorer should have treated him like the disobedient 6 year old that he was. I also don't think any safety protocol that relies on actors checking every gun and handling them responsibly is viable. That should be a third level backup done because it is good practice and not because there is ever a possibility of the armorer handing a loaded gun to an actor accidentally.

Pretty much every question you have about this case can be answered by "because of the dipshit".

Sometimes you're referring to the armorer, sometimes to Baldwin, sometimes to the director, or producer, or whoever. The answer remains the same though.

251 A couple more points

- Directors like real guns because there is a difference in how the actor reacts. It looks more real. Also with HD all this is becoming more apparent -- the look of the gun, the wince, etc.

- I think a lot of times real guns are used because everyone likes the toys and playing tough guy. It is a perk.

Eh, a Uberti Single Action at issue here has an authentic single action and look but is not an antique.

A genuine period Single Action Army Colt has a frame designed for black powder only for that era and even well used is well north of $1000 or so. A genuine antique might not hold up to firing blanks unless you use special black powder blanks.

Blank powder is some nasty crap that is a VERY fast burning powder leaving a bunch of carbon and crap behind. You should always clean blank powder asap out of a regular firearm if you fire them as they can lead to rust in the barrel among other things. Black powder is also sometimes used in very cheap blanks from overseas.

Before expanding bullets, large caliber heavy bullets at a slow speed did the job by sheer size of the hole and momentum generated by the heavy bullet to penetrate at self defense range.

It was expanding bullets that pushed the older paradigm to be changed until the bullet manufacturers could figure out how to get similar performance from heavier and bigger bullets at slow speeds relative to the 9mm and 38/357 revolver rounds.

The first 40 S&W rounds were a ballistic redo of the old 38/40 revolver round 180 gr at about 900-1000 fps.

A nasty habit of those whose minds are driven by ideology is that they double down even when confronted with evidence that their plans have never worked.

Same idiocy had Brits walking to their deaths against entrenched machine guns in the Somme despite 2 years of evidence to the contrary that the result would be butchery of the Brits with little effect on the entrenched Germans.

The easiest thing that can be done by Britain is to use their shale oil resources and drill baby drill if they want to hit Russia where it hurts. Ditto for the US and Iran.

Lira said before he made a run for it to Hungary that if he were intercepted he'd die in prison since his health wouldn't survive the hard labor. He died of pneumonia that wasn't really treated from what I understand. Our diplomats did nothing to intercede for him on any of the times he appealed to them before when he was in house arrest.

388 The easiest thing that can be done by Britain is to use their shale oil resources and drill baby drill if they want to hit Russia where it hurts. Ditto for the US and Iran.

That wouldn't hurt Russia at all as they have plenty of customers even now, like the US after a fig leaf laundering via India.

It might help their own citizens and industries and result in a better life for Britons, so of course they won't do it.

389 Her daddy being an established armorer had more to do with it, most likely.

That would be Thell Reed. He was a former Fast Draw champ and coach and armorer for about a zillion Westerns in the late 50's and 60's. He had to have been about 60+ when she was born.

390 While Baldwin ought to have paid attention, it was the armorer who was responsible to ensure there was no live ammo on the set. Legal Insurrection did a 3-part piece when this happened, by a gun attorney in NM; he laid it out very succinctly - Baldwin is guilty of reckless use and reckless manslaughter - whatever the legal term is.... but someone put live ammo on the set, and it probably wasn't him.

391 Baldwin Called his Daughter a Fat Selfish Pig Did stupid ads for PETA(with Pamela Anderson to)ruined Kids Classic Book Cat in the Hat with a putrid movie and wrote a book about Childcare for Single Fathers which was Not a Best Seller and gets away with Murder we have more reasons to Boycott his putrid movies

392 As much as I hate Baldwin and would love to see him rot in jail... Any movie armorer that had live ammo anywhere near a movie set is an incompetent bloody moron. Plenty of blame to go around here.

393 Yes, I would have Ace, if I gave a shit about Alec Baldwin and his equal deranged wife. But I don’t.
