19 Morning to all you insomaniacals! (Did I misspell that? Never mind, I coined the term, I can spell it however I want.) 'Tis a ridiculously warm and muggy 70 F. here at nearly five a.m., canyabelieve it. Supposedly we will get rain tonight and cooler temps by Pudgy Tuesday. We'll see.

No workout this morning; I can go to the local grocery chain early and not worry about self-checkout being the only choice (they don't have it). With luck I'll be back and settled in for the Book Thread. I have a Stephen King rant -- and since I've been one of his defenders here, this should come as a shock to you. Be warned.

20 America’s Fleeting Chance to Resume Leadership. The United States can't be the “indispensable nation” if it doesn't lead in Ukraine.

...stop the disastrous downhill slide in American power and influence in the world. We face a choice: resume our role as what Madeleine Albright called the “indispensable nation,” or to sit by and watch the world become more dangerous for us and our allies.

...there was Donald Trump’s “America first” approach, which actually meant “America alone.”

...Ukraine...marked an important resurgence of American global leadership. The United States rallied the free world to the defense of a sovereign democracy beset by a murderous dictator. By midsummer 2023, European allies began to outstrip us, providing more aid...as a percentage of GDP, America’s contribution to the war effort lagged behind that of Norway, Lithuania, Estonia, Latvia, Denmark, Poland...

Trump bases his appeal on a promise to make America great again...everything he says about Ukraine and NATO suggests a retreat from the world and from American greatness. No one in Europe will follow our lead if we abandon Ukraine.

21 I'm going grumpy and political early, so feel free to skip if that will wreck your morning:

It gets called a lot of things these days. Cancel Culture. Social Justice. Being "Woke". ThE MeSsAgE.

But there was already a perfectly good word for it. This "it" that seems to escape classification or definition, that seems so nebulous and difficult to pin down. A perfectly good German word that means "facing the same direction, together".

Gleichschaltung

It was the strongest tool of the Bolsheviks, the Red Army Faktion, the Brownshirts, the Cultural Revolution, et cetera et cetera. You don't just run around dressing like a ned and cracking skulls in dark alley ways. You get cleaned up and go to the municipal council meeting to shout people down. You enroll into schools and colleges to browbeat the faculty into submission with threats of retaliation for them not adhering to your vaunted Principles. You instill not just fear but an actual conditioned subconscious reflex of going against Them.

22 Last night, avoiding parade traffic, Miss Linda and I went out to our local pizza/pasta/sub restaurant. It's good food, and I get two meals out of it, but $40 including tip . . . gah. Anyway, we were the only people in the place dressed up even a little bit. Everybody else wore T-shirts and jeans, and one girl still had on her parade marching group outfit, all purple, green, and gold sparkles.

But then, we often are the only grownup dressers when we go out -- and frequently the slimmest and youngest-looking. Heh, heh, heh. . . .

23 "America Alone" sounds like a pretty good thing. I just finished reading a history, an overview of the Roaring Twenties. America had some overseas adventures during that time, Haiti and Nicaragua, but generally we were isolationist. "Mister, we could use a man like Calvin Coolidge again."

24 Gleichschaltung

I introduced that word here, oh--- a decade ago--- and got laughed off the blog......... (yeah, nobody recognized the handle & it wasn't the one I use now. They thought I was a troll or whatever)

Anyway. Yeah. Dude, we all do what we can. Or *what we're willing to do* and it won't be enough. Because it's nearly impossible to get away with 'cracking skulls in dark alley ways' now..............

Maybe there is a sane position to hold between totalitarian autarky and untrammeled anarchism.

Maybe, as people, we're supposed to look at things as things and not as interchangeable and completely congruent members of some abstract class or category.

I look at it the other way around. If he's a real friend, he doesn't go around picking fights with people. I've seen too many psychos find their way into my circle of friends and be nothing but a hassle and a liability, thinking that a friendship is immortal and gaslighting everybody into thinking *they* are the bad person for putting up with their bullshit for years on end.

But... yeah, i was pretty much shoehorning a geopolitical analogy into my own personal hangups.

I didn't realize the US and Ukraine had a deep and committed relationship. I remember Obama mocking Romney (?) for his concerns about Russia ("80s called, want their foreign policy back"), and he and Hillary "resetting" the relationship with Russia so we'd be friends. Why aren't we upset that corrupt Ukraine has been mistreating the ethnic Russians within the borders, prompting Russian intervention?

I completely understood the analogy, and it was a pretty good one. I guess the only thing I'd try to emphasize is that a 'friend' is someone you cultivate a relationship with, not just someone that you're frequently around.

You can always walk away from those you're frequently around, but you gotta stick with a true friend. It doesn't mean you have to let him get hurt but you don't have to prevent him from taking a lump to learn a lesson either. Let alone take a lump with him because he's being stupid.

Heh. I think it actually dovetails into the other point i was making. There is no analytical expression for when or when not to punch a guy in the mouth. You have to judge the situation as a situation, and if you cultivate a life where you habitually try to make good judgements, you stand a better chance of making the right decision in the moment when your idiot buddy say "lol Yvonne is a girl's name you borscht guzzling Nancy!"

Or... you know... whatever.

Punching everyone everywhere, and punching literally no one ever for any reason, are both untenable lifestyles.

86 We lived in NOLA for a few years and only went to MG once. Parked a buddy's VW camper along the route so we had access to a bathroom and a place to crash. The noise, and the filth, and the number of women who would show their tits for a string of tiny beads was astounding. I have to admit that I never saw a single woman get groped or pawed though, despite being in the midst of a drunken mass. I literally tossed my shoes in the garbage at a stop on the way home.

95 Hey, Bulwark DOES have comments on articles. None(!) on the one I posted earlier, but some on this one: Inside Trump’s Takeover of the RNC: “In 2024…

Chaos, dysfunction and even death follow Trump wherever he goes so I am pretty excited about his annexation of the RNC to the Trump Organization. It could hollow out whatever still remains of a viable GOP. The sooner the GOP dies the sooner an authentic sane conservative party can be given birth.

Staying in the GOP is broadcasting your fealty not to a set of principles, positions, or policies, but to one man. I didn’t realize Republicans were so thirsty for an abusive daddy.

There is no "America First wing of the Republican party." There is only Trump First. Putin Second. America Last. (Thank you, Thomas Friedman) Today's GOP has become "Government Of Putin." literally indistinguishable from a DU post lol

During WWII, the overwhelming majority of citizens knew it was down to them to save the country. I wish people today realised the same responsibility rests on their shoulders. It's not Biden that will win November's election. It is "We, the People."

True, when I was a kid there were the strip clubs and other bars along Bourbon. But the Quarter, which is about 100 blocks square, had service businesses, mom-and-pop grocery stores, etc. A Pontiac dealership (still around in the 'burbs, though selling Jaguars now) existed on the northern edge of the district. There were a couple of gas stations on the southern edge. You had paperback book stores, two Woolworth locations, ice cream shops, all sorts of things, without "voodoo" or "daiquiri" in the name of every other shop. And my father always found a spot to park within two blocks of our place -- there were nowhere near the number of hotels with blocked-off parking areas.

The Quarter had a Bohemian vibe, I'm guessing, but middle-class people like my mother who worked in the nearby downtown lived there too. It was not expensive then.

104 Bluesky CAN mass block content. It does, and it will do more as it grows. It is CSAM for now....

“The analogies here are really just, this is how the web works,” Graber said. “So what you do when people are building things on the web that could be dangerous? There’s different levels of intervention. First of all, don’t promote it, don’t send it out to more eyeballs. And then you can disconnect from it, don’t link out to it. So make it less discoverable.”

This is more of a hands-off approach, which also relies on users to take advantage of Bluesky’s customizable moderation tools to determine what online safety means to them. But that might be a lot of responsibility to place on the individual user. In more extreme cases — like the dissemination of child sexual abuse material (CSAM) — the team behind the AT Protocol will step in to eliminate the violative material entirely.

Exactly.

I've lived here since I was five, went to school here. And I have never felt as though I belonged here. I see no value in sitting out in heat that would stun a Cape buffalo in order to pull apart red-black insectoids (crawfish) for a flake of meat smaller than my fingernail. Drinking, I have been sober for several decades. And the more crowded and party-ish the place gets, the harder it is to move around and actually enjoy yourself.

I'm retiring someplace smaller. How's Wolf Hole, Arizona, this time of year?

127 The plot putrefies. Willis can use the "But I am standing up to the bad orange man" defense.

Merchant's filing suggests that the romance between Willis and Wade was commonly known at least in Wade's offices, and perhaps in Willis' as well. Merchant served subpoenas on people in both offices and may have other witnesses who will be forced to testify to their own knowledge of the start of the relationship.

Why does this matter? First off, if Willis lied about it in her filing, the court won't just throw her off the case; they'll refer her to the Georgia State Bar for committing perjury, at the least, which could result in disbarment. It's also substantive to Merchant's claim of a conflict of interest and that Willis receives financial benefits for pursuing the prosecution,

That magic touch with the press and the people, and if he just gets out there, he can win people over with his folksy anecdotes, quips and shit eating grin. Assuming his staff aren't trying to sabotage him, they've got to be trying to limit and control his public appearances as much as possible.

Does Joe listen? Does he understand how he's being handled, and is he willing to play along. I think he was, previously, but the very direct attacks on his competence and mental acuity seem to have him rattled, and he's stubborn and vain. I think he REALLY wants to prove himself and beat Trump in a media/public forum.

I saw some advertisement touting the latest vaccine/booster whatever saying "54% in reducing symptoms!"

You know. Of the cold virus where people were required to wear masks because they wouldn't know they had it because there were no symptoms.

It's weird to watch all of this at work and to know it works.

It's completely win - win for Pfizer. Oh, it didn't help? You must've had a BAD case of COVID. But if you don't get any worse then it was because you took Paxlovid. Because that's Science. Also don't pay attention to your unvaccinated friend who never takes anything and whose body responded exactly like yours to the cold. It was the Paxlovid that helped you.

The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement would have received $7.6 billion, of which “$1,287,102,000 shall be for …. the Alternatives to Detention program.” The program is used to release economic migrants into the care of Democrat-affiliated non-profits, even though federal laws say the migrants should be detained.

They understand. They are the public face of the people really running the show.

I did business in the Middle East for years. Everyone knows that no country wants the Palestinians. Everything DC politicians tell us is bullshit. We've been the lead funders of UNRWA for years other than when Trump shut it down. Technically, it was the State Department doing the funding but there really is no distinction anymore between the State Dept and the CIA.

Our government has been knowingly funding groups like Hamas for year while publicly proclaiming their support for Israel. That's why Biden and Blinken sound so confused now, they know what Hamas did but they are not fully supporting Israels right to lay waste to the terrorists.

This is what happens when foreign policy is outsourced to the spooks.

One of the best stays we ever had was at one of those places. It was near Legoland. Quiet and safe area and neighborhood and I was kind of confused until the second night when I saw that the Indian owners lived, cooked, had their kids there, etc. with them while they were helping guests.

I'd probably do it too if I were leaving the office to go help folks in their rooms.

This is my thought on it, too. Satan, moloch, etc. don't care if you believe in them. Just that you worship them. The demon on the other side of the ouija board doesn't care if you think it's a game or not, only that you open that portal by touching the little triangle.

274 Shirred eggs on homemade whole wheat toast, the bread made with water, yeast, salt, and 100 percent WW flour.

Butter, heavy cream, coarse ground pepper, and some fresh chopped chives all part of the egg dish.

Pour-over coffee, french roast dark.

Yum.

We were up on Gasparilla island a couple days ago, standing on the lighthouse deck at the south end of the island, looking across the channel to Cayo Costa, the island that the eyewall of hurricane Ian crossed going west to east.

The wind rotation, the wind speed and how long it sustained with the eye moving slowly, the new moon and tide, and the shallow Gulf with its huge shelf going out 40 miles, all combined to create a storm surge of almost 14 feet to the eye's south, ruining Fort Myers Beach, and only going 3 feet onto Gasparilla, its winds coming across the narrow sound from the mainland.

Worst storm surge in 150 years.

275 I see that Maduro is uping the bellicose game. They've moved more military assets to the border with Guyana. What struck me was part of the statement by the WH advisor. “We certainly don’t want to escalate tensions, but we have our own strategic relationship with Guyana.”
This concern for escalating tensions seems to be their ongoing theme. Concerns about escalation are valid, but that shouldn't leave the strategy meetings. Put a couple Naval assets outside their maritime border and don't say a thing.
These inept idiots couldn't win a neighborhood gang war.
Maduro is a pawn, and at some point his piece is going to get moved.

It's probably very easy. Created against your will, and not allowed to undo that creation? Forced to serve a master you never chose, or be condemned eternally? Blamed for every ill and misfortune for simply existing? It's real easy to find sympathy for the Devil if you don't already have a healthy relationship with your Father. We may be created in God's image, but we're also created in Satan's situation. And everything goes quite literally to Hell when you embrace that self performing profession of non serviam.

277 So the border bill was a big payout to illegals!
ETC....

They are claiming, "We are trying to secure the Border!"while holding down your little granddaughter to be gangraped by the savages they let in and then pissing all over her face.

I really am beginning to think the 'elite' really REALLY WANT the people to rise up and execute them en masse in ad hoc street trials for treason.
Do they really think the military and savages will within days white knight them by nuking Des Moines etc., enslave the middle class, and move them into camps while most of the 'elite' collect the plunder?

282 Ignore me if you like, I'm just riffing on the idea... all the stuff about goat horns and hooves and serpents, all that "satan-y" imagery.... it's really a bit distracting. What Satan "looks like" is a father saying "oh, fuck those little brats, they've got twelve games this season and i had a hard day at work, i deserve to sit home and put the real game on and crack a beer." He looks like a politician accusing innocent people of the crimes he is actively committing in plain sight and getting away with. He looks like an entire generation being trained to be so obsessed with their Identity that they never develop an identity. He looks like stealing a whole case of Toblerones from the Walgreens because you're "just trying to feed your family".

Satan doesn't look like a goat. He looks like a normal ass human being.
