Good afternoon and welcome to the almost world famous Ace of Spades Pet Thread. Thanks for stopping by. Kick back and enjoy the world of animals.

Would you like a treat?

Let's relax a little with the animals and leave the world of politics and current events outside today.

Meet The PetMorons

Tobie de Joell.jpg

Hi, I'm Joel. I think I sent a pic of Tobie when he was a puppy fresh from the shelter but that was going on three years ago. He's all settled in now and no longer quite so prone to chew sandals to pieces when left alone - though he's still an inveterate counter surfer whenever I turn my back. I'm an old man who lives alone in the desert, and Tobie is doing a pretty good job as my boon companion.

Tobie looks like an exemplary companion.

rooney in box.jpg

sangria in chair.jpg

Rooney and Sangria have appeared before but I thought I'd send some more recent pictures. They are both Maine Coon cats, Sangria is about 20 months old, when we weighed her a couple of months ago she was 12 and half pounds. Rooney is the orange boy, when weighed at the same time he was something over 13 pounds. Even though Rooney is larger than Sangria in both size and weight she still treats him as her kitten and he lets her (same breeder but different parents). The perspective in the pictures is a little off - - Rooney was laying down in the box, that's actually why Sangria is sitting up. It's WAY off in the chair picture but I couldn't resist the picture, with Sangria's arm around Rooney.

Lirio100

Fascinating how the placement of the kitties changes the perspectives of their sizes. They are beautiful.

Our rescue rat terrier Levi - just one look at him and you know he's a good boy.

Yes, indeed. He has that "good boy" look.

A friend of the Pet Thread, with Little Bear, looking dapper and cheerful after a special Valentine's Day haircut.

He has also figured out that the mailman is a friend, and that being a watchdog is a selective job:

He's miniature schnauzer but I like this cut on him.

A great haircut choice.

Little Bear's human Mom is also sentimental for his departed friends, Nikki and Snickers.

8 I think the baby shepherd in the video is the type that grows up to be sort of like a decoy sheep - part of the flock, but able to fight. They are different from the herding shepherds like collies.

Good work on the adoption!

Good work on the rescues!

Youngest daughter went and checked on her most recent adoption. The new cat was curled up touching back-to-back with one of their "grumpy" old cats. The hoomans were very pleased at how well the new kitty was fitting in to his new home.

29 I thought I mentioned Rooney's age--he's nine months old now. We got him when he was three months and quite a bit smaller which is why Sangria "adopted" him. Sangria is two feet from nose to base of tail, and Rooney looks to be bit longer. His breeder thinks he's going to end up close to 25 pounds, although I can't quite imagine that.

31 Pet Thread - Yay!

One of the first times I took a walk with our old dog, Gimli, I was surprised when he took a sharp right, lunging into tall grass. I found myself looking down at the sad eyes of a possum which had just had its neck broken.

There were several more times I had to clean up the corpse of a possum which unwittingly wandered in range of Gimli. An armadillo on the front porch survived, but Gimli was giving the little armored character's neck a good try before I pulled him away.

Last night, Daisy the Belgian Malinois burst out of the house and ran off into the dark, barking like a machine gun. She was on the far side of the driveway when I caught up with her and by flashlight saw her jumping at and barking at a crouching, hissing possum. Amazingly, the possum seemed pissed but unharmed. Also amazingly, Daisy came to me when I called her, let me hook up her leash, and, despite much hesitation, came inside with me.

Maybe Daisy thought it was a cat, because that's how she acts when she wants Ony to play with her. In any case, Good dog. Lucky possum.

36 Afternoon, PEt Folk,

Sangria and Rooney are great, and clearly great together. I knew as soon as I saw Sangria's head and ears that he had to be a Coon. Rooney, for his part, looks much like my late and much-missed Arizona the part-Coon. Or so I've always said about his ancestry. It probably was not true; though he had the heft and the rich flowing coat, he didn't have much of the "gentle giant" temperament the breed is known for. And how could an MC kitten, too young to be adopted out, have been found as a stray forty miles and more from the only breeder in the area at the time?

Didn't matter. He was always my buddy.

38 This is the first winter with 15 year old Precious the Bichon and she definitely has ideas about outdoor deportment when there is snow on the ground. Normally she just sniffs out 'the right place' to do her business but snow changes that. She goes to the grassy edge of the sidewalk or driveway, checks for clearance between her bottom and the snow, backs up just enough and goes on the clear spot. Admittedly, she doesn't have much clearance to work with. It's funny to watch. I keep expecting her to pull out a small ruler to check the depth. She is that methodical.

45 Rooney is more outgoing, Sangria is more of a diva. My grandson was a little disappointed at first when she was a little standoffish until she got used to him. I'm going to try him on a vest and leash when it's a little warmer, he's pretty eager to get outside. We did have both of them chipped--just in case!

47 So Purry is a Special Boy. He's let it be known that he would like to be the Only Cat (not happening). He's already got Publius wrapped around his paw, but having to share space with Della is apparently insufferable.

When it's a hamergency, he gets some strips of ham. Della comes over to get some too. Purry walks away pissed, and crouches by the door, turning his back on the situation.

48 Well, if ducks are pets...

Ummm...yesterday, Aldi's had clearanced out their whole ducks for under $3/lb. It's still winter, and while a pet duck might be better than a cooked duck, if you can't have the pet...

And duck broth based soup is to die for, so you get 2 meals for one with a duck...

So, if you have a nearby Aldi's, check the frozen section this weekend...

49 Stirling the great black cat from MS (I have dubbed him the "Duke of Vicksburg") and little Dagny Sophia the Siberian are now almost two years old. I'm glad they are out of the "crazy kitten" phase, but they still play with toys and each other, and drive me nuts, though less than they did.

They seem devoted to each other. I've been fortunate many times introducing cats who are strangers to each other. Wolf and Chekov made friends in an hour and were in the window together watching birds before I knew it. Little Oreo and young Tatiana got along well, though Oreo was elderly and didn't want to play and romp the way Tati did. Arizona did not like other cats -- but he accepted the existence of black cat Marie-Antoinette, and Mom's tri-color Li'l Bit before that, without going nuclear on them.

Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at February 17, 2024 04:54 PM (omVj0)

50 We have a feral cat visitor occasionally, I named him the Midnight Mambo because he is all black. I think he's a male but he won't let me approach him. Dexter is now too old to fight. He's like me, too old to either give or receive an a** whoopin'.

51 Husband makes excellent homemade biscuits. Even I like them and I'm not that big of a biscuit fan.

But dog is ADDICTED to them. If husband puts a biscuit on his plate and takes it back to his, office she follows him and warts him until she gets a bite. I'm a softer touch so she always starts on me first until she gets the maximum number of biscuit bites.

She likes biscuits better than bacon or cheese, and that's saying something.

Posted by: Art Rondelet of Malmsey at February 17, 2024 04:59 PM (FEVMW)

52 Long time ago now my first cat was a three month old found in a parking lot. He was pretty laid back (my vet loved him!). A couple of years later my daughter and I found a six week or so kitten in a ditch. She turned out to be a drama queen, although never more than six pounds. I heard her screaming one day not long after we brought her home. I ran into the room convinced there was a Big Problem. Tigger was laying on a chair, ignoring her--she was rolling around on the floor in front of him screaming bloody murder. I named her Sotchka for a reason.

Posted by: Lirio100 at February 17, 2024 05:01 PM (I5U35)

53 When we adopted Precious we knew she needed serious dental work. We suspect that's why her owner turned her in at the shelter. But getting the dental care has made a world of difference for her. She eats better, is more playful (her zoomies are hilarious to watch), and she now invites caresses on her face. When she first came home she was very head shy, probably because of the tooth discomfort. We knew there would be expense when we got her. It's been worth every penny as we see being playful and enjoying life.
