Good morning Horde. Thank you for stopping by this morning. Before we get to the Prayer Revival, just a few housekeeping matters. (Rulz for those of you in Hub City)

1) This is an open thread, feel free to lurk, opine and/or bloviate away until Ms. Saturday comes along.

3) Although most rules were meant to be bent, try to remember that you shouldn't run with sharp objects.

Prayer Requests:
12/16 – Jim (in kalifornia) could still use prayers. His wife is in the hospital for a routine procedure to put in liver stents. It didn’t go well. She is on antibiotics. She is in a catch-22: she can’t get chemo until her liver is healthy enough, but the tumors are also damaging her liver. Jim had an abdominal bug and had to go to the ER, but he’s better.
12/27 Update – The doctor confirmed that his wife is going through liver failure. Her “liver” is huge and 90% composed of metastases. He has no estimate for how long she has.
1/25 Update – Jim’s wife has died. He said she went pretty peacefully; her breathing went for deep slow to shallow fast, to so shallow she was getting no air Jim was with her to the end, telling her how much he loved her and recounting the wonderful times they had in their almost 26 years of marriage.
1/27 Update – Jim thanked everyone for their prayers. They are very much appreciated. He posted that he feels her loss heavily at times, and that he has the hope and belief that he will see again some day, wrapped in glory.
12/27 – TecumsehTea requested prayers for a dear friend, Pastor Joe, who has a benign brain tumor. In the past 2 years he has dealt with a heart attack and prostate cancer, and now this. He has deep faith and trusts the Lord. His family is understandably anxious. Prayers for wisdom for the doctors, peace and comfort for his family, for continued mercy and healing for Pastor Joe.
2/8 Update – Surgery was successful on 2/8. It only took 2 hours, instead of the expected 4 hours, and his vitals are good and his brain is functioning normally.
1/6 – Our Country is Screwed asked for prayers for his daughter. At 26 years old, she has been diagnosed with breast cancer. They are still running tests and scans to determine what treatment options are available.
1/27 Update – She will be starting chemo in a couple of weeks, followed by surgery and then radiation. She has a long road ahead of her, but she is strong and has a positive attitude. He said it’s really hard being 14 hours away from her.
1/10 – GnuBreed posted that he has been mostly absent from the comments as he strove to get a liver transplant. He was not able to, due to a worn out body, and he will be entering hospice soon. His end is near. He says the transplant team made a fair judgement.
1/20 Update – GnuBreed said he is doing “the home hospice thingy” and said that it sure helps him out. Some days are mostly good, so he will keep up the fight for a while. He sends his thanks for the kind words and thoughts.
1/12 – Washington Nearsider’s last day of employment has come and gone. He plans to withdraw his TSP and retirement contributions to buy time and then evaluate whether or not to list his house. His ex-wife, learning of his change in employment, is filing to contest his sole custody of their two children, and his lawyer has explained that without a job, he is likely to lose custody. Please pray that he can find employment sufficient to keep his house and his kids before losing both.
2/3 Update -Washington Nearsider has been and remains sincerely grateful for the prayers and well-wises of the Horde. He has withdrawn his TSP and has enough money left to get through late March – early April. He will accrue debt with the custody hearings which begin 3/6. He has 3 interviews scheduled for the week of 2/5. He is also attempting to expand his custom model building services to bring in additional income by leaning on 20 years of experience building models of all kinds: building planes, tanks, ships, etc. Please contact him through the comments or email Annie’s Stew, and she can send you his direct contact information. He sends his thanks for his daily dose of sanity in an otherwise crazy world, and for the constant stream of wonderful Fani Willis euphemisms.
1/13 – Tipperdi asked for prayers. Her cousin lost his 23-year-old daughter in a car accident in mid-December. He’s having a hard time coping and Tipperdi is worried about his mental health.
1/13 – Screaming in digital requested prayers for R, a beloved family member who has pancreatic cancer. He is feeling pretty normal at this point. It was discovered while checking for something else. It doesn’t look like there are any reasonable treatment options for him, though.
1/20 Update – There was some good news for R – the latest test confirms cancer has not spread and is slow-moving. Now they are looking at treatment options.
1/26 – Pooky’s girl shared the good news that they are expecting a baby, approximately 9/21/2024! Please pray that it all goes smoothly for them and the new baby.
1/18 – CBD noted that long-time commenter, moon_over_vermont, passed away at the end of December.
1/20 – Cybersmythe asked for prayers for his sweetie’s son, who is in rehab.
2/3 Update – The son is out of rehab. They appreciate the prayers and hope for continued recovery.
1/20 – Screaming in digital is worried about Mom. She sleeps very late every day then dozes on the couch most of the afternoon. She can’t get interested in doing much, although she is still cheerful and not grumpy. She may be adjusting after the holidays and moving. They’ll contact her doctors on Monday.
1/20 – Jewells said she has spent the last 2 days recovering from the latest chemo treatment. Praise God, it has gone much better. She still had pain, but was able to manage it with oxy, but it makes her very weak.
1/20 – MKC asked for prayers for Mrs. MKC. She is having an elective procedure on Thursday and is, by her nature, prone to worrying about the usual risks.
1/20 – Blanco Basura asked for prayers. Her friend’s child OD’d on prescription meds. She leaves behind a husband and a 5-year-old daughter. She was 26. Prayers for peace and comfort for the family, and the little girl’s future would be good.
1/20 – Tonypete requested continued prayers for his wife’s church buddy Mike, who has advanced bone cancer and is in great pain constantly. He’s a hell of a guy and suffers without complaint.
1/26 – Don Black asks for your prayers for his kidney surgery.
1/27 – Emmie asked for prayers for Mr. Bassman, for his upcoming knee replacement surgery. Also, they are having patient-sitters come in when Emmie has to go out, and there’s a certain amount of anxiety related to both of them. Prayers that it all goes well would be good.
2/3 Update – Thank you for the prayers! The surgery went well and recovery is coming along nicely. His patient-sitters were a big help. The family and church friends have been a huge encouragement and a great resource.
1/27 – Tonypete asked for prayers of thanksgiving for his 14 year old granddaughter. She has expressed a strong interest in being baptized. Her parents are disinterested, so Mimi is picking up the slack here. Hopefully this step leads to many others on her journey to a positive life.
1/27 – Mindful Webworker welcomes prayers – daughter Sugar Plum Fairly miscarried this week. It was the second time in recent years. She and the wonderful son-in-law are hurt, but taking it in stride.
1/27 – RetSgtRN gave an update on her son-in-law, Kenny. His bone marrow biopsy last week showed 100% donor marrow, which means the cancer is gone. She sent a thank you for the many prayers sent his way. This is such a blessing for him, her daughter, and her two grandsons.
1/27 BrianinTn asked for prayers and support for Rich (in St. Petersburg), who is suffering from the advanced stages of Parkinson’s disease, and is to the point where he can no longer work, and even has trouble standing or sitting up for any length of time. Please give your prayers and support to someone who is without a doubt the nicest guy BrianinTn has even known.
1/27 – Dash my lace wings! humbly asked for prayers for her worsening lower back pain. She got checked, and an X-ray showed her spine is all curvy – not scoliosis bad, but definitely not straight. She appreciates prayers that they can get it straightened out and pain-free in short order.
2/3 – Teresa in Fort Worth would appreciate prayers for Leigh, the director of a school for students of all ages with Down Syndrome. Leigh has been diagnosed with Soft Tissue Sarcoma. The tumor was removed this week, and they think they got all of it. Leigh would appreciate the prayers.
2/3 – Reforger asked for prayers for his Coworker, “D”, a widowed mom of 4 who is having a rough time with daughter #1. The daughter is skipping school, was caught 3 times and now police and social workers are involved. “D” is beside herself. She is having to miss work (and pay) to do probation stuff and keep appointments with “therapists”.
2/3 – Naughty Pine asked for prayers for Rachelle, a para-pro who retired from working in Detroit and has to continue working elsewhere. She discovered she was put into the wrong payscale and HR has given her the run-around, despite clear proof. She’s afraid of making waves, but Naughty Pine convinced her that does no one any good, to continue with this error. Naughty Pine would also appreciate prayers for her Arizona-bound neighbors. They have a long trip ahead, with moving van, trailers, etc. Also, please pray she gets good new neighbors.
2/3 – I’m Gumby Damn It requested prayers for an emotional hardship. He trained a two-man crew to install bath remodeling products for his little company, and they went around him and were hired by his vendor.
2/3 – Polliwog the ‘Ette would appreciate prayers for Inspector’s back pain. It’s been bad enough that he’s had to admit it’s a problem. It also keeps him from sleeping or being able to do even mild exercise, both of which are important for managing his blood pressure. They’d appreciate prayers for complete healing, but also wisdom on how to prevent future problems.
2/3 – Brother Tim is currently homeless. He spent the last 3 nights at a hotel, but he’s short on cash now. He needs a new job and a place to stay. He’s looking for another roommate situation, but they are few and far between. He is trying to make new connections, too. He’s not looking for funds, but advice and prayers are appreciated.
2/6 – 496 requested prayers for his wife and daughter as they begin a formal process of reconciliation. Please pray for warm hearts and cool heads at a minimum. He would also like prayers for his boss, “S.T.”. About a year ago his wife’s breast cancer returned. Initial treatment looked successful, but it is back now, and in her brain.
2/3 – Fenelon Spoke asked for “P”, who needs prayers for his return to faith as a Christian. Also, prayers for Pam, who needs continued healing after a pacemaker insertion, are appreciated.
2/8 – It’s me, Donna, asked for prayers after some bad lab tests. It turns out it’s not as bad as thought and easily treated. Thanks so much for the prayers.

7 Good morning! Today I'd like to highlight a couple of movie recommendations: Becket and A Man for All Seasons.

Yes, it's a festival of guys named Thomas, but I think they are perfect for the current moment. Both men had power, respect and the ear of the king, but they refused to compromise their faith, and were willing to die for it.

One of the ways we build courage is by practicing it, and the same is true of faith. Practice makes perfect. As someone who grew up despising organized religion, it took time for me to develop a proper daily prayer routine, and I'm still refining it, but I find it very helpful and the more I do it, the more peace I have.

9 Before I get to the prayer list, I would like to request one for my BIL. He began experience back and then leg pain about a year ago. He was tested, scanned, given Cortisone shots with but no real definitive diagnosis. Yesterday he woke up with no feeling in his legs and unable to walk. After 14 hours in the ER, they discovered a grapefruit sized mass on his spine. He is scheduled for surgery this morning. It is a relatively high risk surgery. He's 6 years older than me, an active and healthy guy. We bought the front half of their acreage 28 years ago. His son lives on the 20 acres below us. He's the glue that holds this family enclave together and one of my few true friends. Prayers would be greatly appreciated.

Went out to the kennel last night to put everyone up, fill food buckets and give Diana and Dutchess their dinners.

Sonny didn't want to get up. He didn't want a treat. I was alarmed. We've had at least three dogs I can remember who didn't want their treats and were dead within hours.

Got a leash and got him up. He was favoring his left front leg. I went over him. No evidence of a snake bite, no swelling of the foot, no blood indicating a fight with his brothers. His stomach was soft, so no bloat. His gums were redder than they should have been. Heartbeat strong.

Took him to the emergency vet all the same because he was in pain. They figure he jammed his shoulder somehow because when they manipulated it, he cried out. Prescribed Rimadyl and Gabapentin for him and told me to monitor him. Got home at midnight, took care of him, took care of the puppies again and got to bed at 1:00.

This morning, he ate his morning food but was dopey from the medicine. Stood on all four legs. He's closed in his pen for the day. I think I did the right thing taking him in.

Coworker D and daughter are doing better.
I mentioned I dropped some money for her.
So. I play $20 in video poker after work every day.
It relaxes me and more often then not I walk out with more than I walked in with.
On my last hand Tuesday I invoked D's name.
I says "give me 4 aces and I will give D another $200."
Hit the button and it dealt them to me, with the kicker (a 2,3 or 4).
That's $500.
So I walk into work the next day.
"D I have a problem and I need your help."
"Anything, what do you need"
I explained "... and karma dictates I have to give you another $200."
More tears. The good kind.

29 Good morning Horde! I’m mostly just lurking now, but wanted to provide an update. First the gains news- down to 190, body fat of 7% (I’ve got abs again!) and running 5th 5k in 5 months tomorrow in Destin. That’s a total of 165 lbs lost from 355– looking and feeling much better. Entered final settlement with the former Mrs. Farmer- mediator said her hatred for me was “palpable.” Still don’t understand, but at peace with it now.

At the time, and ever after, I've said that was pure theater. Election year boob bait for the bubbas. IOW, Mitch blocked that nom to throw a bone to the base, but threw out the "election year nomination" excuse as his escape hatch.

Because he knew in his black little coffee-bean sized heart, just like his Democrat partners did, that Hillary would beat Trump, and then ram through Garland or some other desirable Leftist stooge.

Essentially, his one single "accomplishment" in his wretchedly long career was just another of his usual cheesy parliamentary tricks, except it went horribly wrong for the Uniparty.

McConnell is always McConnell. He's never come down with a case of principlitis.

Gary. He's a guy who barely graduated HS, who is one of the most intelligent , of the AOP variety, people I know. He worked most of his life for a manufacturing company in Spokane , traveling the world, installing and fixing their food packaging machines. It's a good wager that most morons have eaten or drank a product from a machine he worked on. He's a quiet man who is always the first to show up to help wherever there is work to be done or a problem to solve.

Breakfast at my grandparents' house smelled of coffee, oatmeal, and grapefruit. I know there were eggs and some kind of meat, too, but those are the smells I remember.

there is supposed to be a technique of adding graphene or carbon to concrete to allow it to use lower grade sand in the mix. I have to chase down more information on that. The "popular science" version I read discussed using coked down coffee grounds for the carbon.

53 Allow me to 'splain. A few years ago the lovely Missus Muldoon started to pour coffee by starting at the level of the top of the mug and during the pour would raise the pot up to a height of about 8-12 inches above the mug. I don't follow politics, but it's obvious the Dems are about to initiate a battle royale for the nomination. The report is about pushing Biden out and it's anyone's guess who succeeds him.

I stay aloof of such things because God has the final word and I can't affect it anyway. I get more value for my effort doing things around the house.

Agreed. Over the last decade, God has blessed me with a greater understanding of His peace. It is that wonderful and unique aspect of that personal relationship He offers to each of us. I had an emergency bowel resection in October. Some kind of blockage. It was a close call but yay the doc saved me. Since then, I've had a colonoscopy, endoscopy, another colonoscopy, two cat scans, and an MRI. They've all been inconclusive - for sixteen weeks now, no idea what the thing is. Possibly cancer lump. Might be a bad bite of overcooked cauliflower-crust pizza. More exploration ahead.

So, I guess you could say, no news is good news. So far. But I'm never having cauliflower-crust pizza again!

The left believes its own lies. They really think that the "adults" are in charge, and nothing can shatter this fantasy. They think that everything going wrong is due to treason, are still convinced Russia colluded, and that somewhere, somehow, they can prove Trump killed Michael Jackson or something equally outrageous. That is why there is little hope for a soft landing. I don't think they mean to start a war, I think they are convinced the bully works (because it works on them) and that the right is just as cowardly and approval-seeking as they are, but they will at some point go to far.

I've seen it in friends and family - they are completely detached from reality. And when it happens, they'll be deeply puzzled about how we got there.

If the last decade has taught me anything it is that there is no steps the left won't take to get and retain power. They have some delicate decisions to make particularly when it comes to Kamala but they aren't going to nothing. They could solve the Kamala problem with Newsom since they can't run a President and VP from the same state. It would be ugly but there is at least a logic to it if they can get Kamala to play along with some nice parting gifts.

If they can't fix their candidate issue they will fix the election. To do that they will need a big event like the China virus in 2020.

There is a partial way it could be done, if Biden is onboard. Shortly before the Dem convention, Biden has to announce a diagnosis of Alzheimers, cancer, or some other medical issue, and he's doing the noble sacrifice for the good of the nation and not running for reelection.

He ALSO has to announce, that while he doesn't get to automatically determine his replacement, he urges the party delegates to choose candidate X (not Kamala). Has to be woman and/or person of color, with some kind of international diplomacy experience. Justify it as needing an expert on international affairs due to global events, but Kamala can stay onboard as VP due to her "expert experience" in domestic affairs. A dream tag team!

We're in ridiculous times. Biden's corruption not just his senility is becoming a real problem. Nobody would believe Harris could beat Trump, she's not even liked by her own party.

I think sometimes we focus too much on a single person like Obama being a puppet master instead of viewing it more like a living organism with many centers of power focused on mostly common goals but with individual goals as well.

The seeds for where we are in Ukraine right now didn't start with Obama or even W. They go back a lot further to the fall of the Wall and the move to refocus NATO. One of the key architects of that was Dick Cheney. Cheney was also the guy who consolidated our bioweapons research under a single bureaucrat named Anthony Fauci. In every successive administration on both sides of the aisle those positions only got hardened.

I agree. They are becoming much like the old Soviets, machinery over leadership, which tends to make adherents more focused on allegiance and compliance than leadership and that leads to doom.

Not just with the presidency but down ballot as well. But desperate people do desperate things. This is when they are the most unpredictable and dangerous.

There are a lot of people betting that "we can't let Putin win because he is a Russian" is more important than the economy, personal liberty, the inflation and the chance of losing.
I can never get anyone to tell me what would happen if we were to surrender, and if what we lost would be greater than what we have already lost and what we stand to lose if we stay in this course of "proxy war against the evil Russians and that Tool of Satan Putin"

I would disagree with that. We've been fed a steady diet of reasoning on why NATO needed to expand since the Wall came down, namely to stop Russian expansion and aggression. NATO has grown from its original 12 members to 31 and growing.

After the Wall came down the Russians were in no position to start reuniting their former satellites. They were broke and busted and that's when we started expanding.

From Putin's point of view, we are the ones expanding next to his sandbox but we rarely if ever get to hear things from Russia's view, just ours. I've long believed that our post WWII foreign policy on both sides of the aisle has been not just completely wrong and backward but dangerous as it puts other countries needlessly on the defensive and makes us appear to them as the aggressor.

Got it. I do think it's important for people to understand how we got here as well. The uniparty has done a fine job of brainwashing a huge segment of our population on history to justify their actions. I don't think their intentions started nefariously for the most part but they've led us into a bad place and their response is to keep doubling down and call anyone who disagrees and enemy of the state.

A huge reason they hate Trump and us.

I came to this conclusion after years of noticing that even the "serious" movie watches with whom I'm acquainted and who dismiss most Sci-Fi/Fantasy as kiddie flicks, even they would get excited when I brought up the 1997 box office hit.
And why is this so? Easy.
The Fifth Element hits on what current day Hollywood has forgotten how to do, make a FUN movie that is cool to look at with actors and actresses embracing the personalities of their otherworld characters with joy.
Whether it's Milla Jovovich's childlike, yet kickass LeeLoo or Gary Oldman's comically villainous Jean Baptiste Emanuel Zorg, you can tell that everyone involved is having a blast.
Therefore, if you haven't watched The Fifth Element in some time, treat yourself on this rainy (at least where I am) Saturday afternoon, grab some snackums, jump on the couch and pull up this great movie that's not just for Geeks of the genre but for all and for all time.

One last thing. The late Luke Perry has a small part in The Fifth Element, playing an archeologist's assistant in 1914.
