The five individuals arrested face up to 12 years in prison if found guilty. Ukraine's prosecutor general says the $39.6 million has since been seized and returned to the defense budget.
++++ Seems .... unlikely. If they were able to get it back, then so much more than that was stolen that there was still this much leftover to be reclaimed. $8 million burns a hell of a hole in the pocket. The idea that none was spent is ludicrous. Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at January 30, 2024 04:31 PM (mwCIn) 7

Only $40 mil?
Posted by: Anna Puma at January 30, 2024 04:32 PM (yHcnp) ++++ That they've admitted to. This is probably part of an op to boost confidence. People - the wrong kinds of people, the sub-human people who question their benevolent rulers, but people nonetheless - know Ukraine is corrupt and have the poor taste to speculate out loud about how much American largess has been stolen. The next round of handouts is tied up in domestic affairs and Ukraine is probably getting antsy. This is probably a straightforward op to acknowledge corruption, but only a small amount of it. It's a mere rounding error on the total, but it's still a problem and they're dealing with it. The speculation was unfounded. Ukraine is honest and a good steward of American money, so please get a move on with sending more. Just a guess. Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at January 30, 2024 04:35 PM (mwCIn) 28

Ukraine Says U.S. Money Not Going To Ukraine, ‘Benefiting American Interests‘ The $130 billion sent to Ukraine so far for its war against Russia is apparently not actually going to Ukraine, but is really “benefiting American interests,” a spokesperson for Ukraine told Breitbart News. The shock claim was in response to a request for information by Breitbart News on whether or not any American tax dollars had gone specifically to Uman, a city in the war-torn Eastern European nation that is currently seeing a condo built on a Jewish mass grave, as previously reported, in violation of a bilateral agreement with the U.S., and in violation of international law. http://tinyurl.com/4rsph2yy Posted by: andycanuck (2yu8s) at January 30, 2024 04:35 PM (2yu8s) 32

Posted by: Jason at January 30, 2024 04:35 PM (yS8bt) ++++ This is ignoring and pretending it doesn't exist, just like the USA does. The Party sometimes throws a bone to the people by pursuing an anti-corruption action. They sacrifice a low-level or mid-level player, pretend that the system works, and continue robbing the bitch blind while hiding behind the anti-corruption prosecution as a fig leaf. They don't ignore corruption, you see. They pursue it. All is well. The government is clean - if it weren't, there'd be more anti-corruption action. DU had one, tiny thread on this subject started on Sunday. It only has 10 responses. They REALLY don't want to talk about it lol.
I'm happy to see Ukraine rooting out corruption and being transparent. This will help them in the long run to become a NATO and EU member. As if Zelensky doesn't have enough to do. I can't imagine. He must be exhausted. It's good that Ukraine isn't attempting to sweep it under the rug. Ukraine has had their share of crooks (and pro-Russian traitors), long before Zelensky was elected. Of course it takes time to catch and prosecute them all. Corruptions is especially prevalent not just in Eastern Europe, but also the Balkans. officials in Ukraine still have the Soviet mindset. When it is something that has ingrained for a long time, it's really hard to get rid of. Like much of Europe, oligarchs in Ukraine have a lot of power. Santos only crime? To the Dems it was being Republican. To Republicans, it was being as close to conservative as you can get.
His fabulism in the context of the abject corruption of everyone else around him was the equivalent of stealing a piece of Bazooka from the candy store. Posted by: J.J. Sefton at January 30, 2024 04:44 PM (x0n13) ++++ But that's not the narrative. The narrative was, "he is a corrupt politician and we don't tolerate that, so we took care of it because we're honest and running a clean government." Facts need not enter into it. "Anti-corruption" actions are usually about reinforcing Party power and taking out opponents. Mendendez is the former, Santos was the latter. 93 It's good that Ukraine isn't attempting to sweep it under the rug.
There is no redemption in their eyes for being right from the start. If there is any acknowlegement at all, it comes with an undertone of contempt. Could Ukraine have been handled better, sure, but I'm wrong for being correct on day 1. A negotiated cease-fire really only could come after tens of thousands of lives lost and billions of dollars wasted. All of the really smart people on the television say so. And on a nicer note, This quote belongs on the earlier thread which mentions "Miracle ", the 1980 Olympic Hockey team which had Kuert Russell as the coach Herb Brooks. It's why Brooks wasn't out wit the team after the win:
"It was not my spot," he said. "I always say sort of flippantly, 'I had to go to the bathroom.' Or, 'If I'd have went on the ice when this thing happened, someone would have speared me or something.' It's a great feeling of accomplishment and pride. They had to do it. It was their moment." Sounds like he was a down to earth kind of man. Russian, Italian and Ukrainian government ministers are hanging out and discussing how they steal tax money. Italian says I was given $200m to build a 10 mile, 4 lane road. I spent $50M and built a 5 mile 2 lane road instead, pocketed $150M.
Russian guy says yeah that’s not bad but let me take you guys to Russia and show you how I do things. They go to a Moscow suburb and the minister says look at this valley. I was given $500M to build 1000 apartments and I only built 100 and pocketed $450M. Italian guy is impressed. Ukrainian says that’s nice but still amateur hour. Let me take you to Ukraine and show you how it’s done. So they go to Ukraine in the middle of nowhere. Ukrainian says I was given $5b to build this ultra modern highway. Russian and Italian look around and say, what are you talking about there’s nothing here, no sign of any highway. Ukrainian says: exactly. Posted by: Montec at January 30, 2024 05:16 PM (YofvK) 246

At least two peer-reviewed medical studies (Fergusson 1982, Vernberg 1984) have suggested that Mr. Yuk stickers do not effectively keep children away from potential poisons and may even attract children. Specifically, Vernberg and colleagues note concerns for using the stickers to protect young children. Fergusson and colleagues state that "the method may be effective with older children or as an adjunct to an integrated poisoning prevention campaign".
