Well, yes - but what can they say? The press openly lies in all things, but at a certain point the lie becomes so extreme and so obvious even to lo-fos that they take a different tack and move on to different lies, equally obvious but less rancid with age.
So by cornering them with the obvious lies they *have* told but are no longer telling, he leaves them with no viable choice. It's the propaganda equivalent of the flight-or-fight response. Like its physical analogue, the press whore faces three choices:
1. Fight (usually by telling a new lie, specifically about the subject they're facing)
2. Flight (reassert the lie, damn the consequences)
3. Freeze
As with many stupid animals unable to process the options with reasonable speed - and as accentuated through human cowardice and entitlement - they froze.

The problem is, there's a tone to the failed campaign of the guy. It's not to be confrontational with the press, and everyone knows why. He's not free to say whatever he wants. Which is the biggest reason his campaign has failed.
I don't mean to start anything either, just that he could have taken this tack, had he come out of the gate, being something closer to what people expected from him, and he didn't.

I think the candidates are just kind of stuck. There's not a whole lot they can do directly. They don't run the secretary of state offices in other states. They can't force precincts to do things in other states.
So, they just...don't address it.

Yeah, everybody knows "presidential campaigns" aren't always about running for President. But whatever Boots was doing, he did it poorly.
Bottom line: No matter who does or doesn't like it, this is Trump's run, he's the nominee, and anyone acting like he's not, is either deluding themselves, or is in on the steal.

They are not "hiding behind" anything. They are loudly putting their position out there, with the idea that you can't even challenge it.
No Political Trial ever starts with anybody hiding a damn thing. It always starts with the State putting their opinion out, clearly and loudly. The trick is - you can't challenge that opinion.
I always like illustrating this, in practical words, by the same assumptions many on the Right used to take as simply bedrock. The idea that "The police and military will always be on our side", for example.
It's generally accepted, now, that that's bullshit. Yet - at the time - back during the Romney Wars - calling it bullshit was simply not accepted, and those that accepted it least screamed "Heretic" the loudest.
Those people didn't hide behind anything, either. They were out front in their notion that such a statement simply could not be.
