Retired General: Lloyd Austin Went AWOL and Deserted His Post. Fire Him.

But-but-but -- he's a Very Private Man! We can't expect a Very Private Man who Values His Privacy to remain at his post until relieved!

That's racist!

Ed Morrissey:

Kenneth Israel has had enough of the apologists at the White House and elsewhere trying to defend the indefensible. In an essay today at The Messenger, the retired major general blasts those spin efforts to hide what everyone can plainly see happened at the Department of Defense.

Lloyd Austin went AWOL, regardless of his personal desire for privacy or the illness for which Austin was being treated. Everything else is just "crazy excuses" for abandoning a post, Israel declares...

Furthermore, Israel concludes, Austin's selfish actions in pursuit of "privacy" contradicts everything drilled into the men and women who serve under him in uniform. Any one of those would be punished for quitting a post without proper relief. What kind of signal does it send when their penultimate civilian commander decides to simply disappear out of a concern for his pride?

I abandoned my sentry post because I wanted to be alone with my thoughts for a few days. I'm a Private Man. How dare you question me disappearing without leave for a long weekend!!!

More at the link, including excerpts from Israel's post.

At RedState, Andrew Malcolm writes that Austin needs to go.

Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, who presides over 1.4 million U.S. military volunteers, left his Pentagon post without notice or authorization and kept his absence a secret for almost a week. That's called AWOL, even if you're in charge.

...

Colleagues describe the veteran as an intensely private person.

Sorry, you give up privacy when you take on an appointed job that's high up in the chain of presidential succession, leading the men and women volunteers who comprise our national defense.

How's he going to prosecute the next Bowe Bergdahl who leaves his guard post without notice and his fellow troops vulnerable?

He can't.

...

The event and its bungled handling also create a widening array of difficulties for an administration that's already acquired a convincing reputation for incompetence.

...

Word at the moment is that Joe Biden is not considering seeking Austin's resignation. Biden hates facing up to such confrontations, so he won't. And the world sees this weakness in someone supposed to be commander in chief.

Senator Tommy Tuberville: Austin lectured me about military readiness.

Then he went AWOL.

Tuberville said, "It's outrageous that the head of the largest military in history has been hospitalized for a week and he didn't tell anybody. You know what that tells me? There's no respect for Joe Biden being the President of the United States. Somebody was told, I promise you that, but they didn't tell Biden because he's the Rodney Dangerfield of being President, no respect. This puts us in danger. Thank God our enemies didn't take advantage of it. These people just spent months lecturing me about acting officials, these promotions I've been holding for abortion. They've been telling me Sen. Tuberville's holding back on military readiness, and we have an AWOL Secretary of Defense that doesn't tell anybody. ... At the end of the day, this is Joe Biden's responsibility. He should have been fired."

The Very Private Secretary of Defense needs to Seek Further Opportunities in the Very Private Sector.

Much easier to get out of the wind than inside the guard shack. So... at whatever point it was, I was comfortably snoozing in the back of one of the trucks, and a warrant officer came up, and sort of apologetically told me I had to vacate my post. Whatever they were using the trucks for, they had to start loading up.

Damn fine of the man to be as cordial as he was.

He literally just fell off the map, including to his staff, to go to South America to be with his mistress, a journalist. He was gone for a few days. It became a scandal. He showed up, claiming he had been hiking in the Appalachia's. He even got his wife to back him up.

It came out where he really went. His personal life completely fell apart. His political career came to a stall (going from presumptive contender for the R nomination in 2012 to a joke). He disappeared for a few years, coming back to run in the special election to fill SC-1 when Nikki Haley appointed Tim Scott to be Senator. It was a big field of about 15 candidates, Sanford won pretty much based on name recognition. He served four terms or so, participating in the Freedom Caucus and accomplishing little (because the Freedom Caucus is a joke) and only gained "new respect" when he went against Trump, first backing Cruz in the SC primary and then just being an ineffective thorn in Trump's side in Congress until he just refused to run for re-election again.

Remember a story out of USSR this junior officer was such a drunk (embarrassing by Russian standards!) that the regimental staff connived to have him sent off to training school. But then they had to fake a bunch of glowing reviews of him, recommend him for promotion, etc. But eventually was out.

After graduating, and another promotion he volunteered to take the posting at the same regiment, but now he was less drunk and more vindictive of anyone who crossed him back then.

I tend to get him and McGreevy mixed up. I know Gay Mac had his wife up on the podium, once his scandal broke, and the poor woman had to stand by her man... for a time.

I don't recall if Sanford's wife did the same, but that was a cliche for a while. Catch the guy in a sex scandal, then make the wife stand there looking like she likes it.

Such a perverse kink. And of course Hillory perfected the role.

I'm sure none of this stuff matters anymore, but back in the day, they'd say if you read a newspaper, believing everything you read is at least an attempt at getting it right, wait until they write a story about a subject with which you have intimate familiarity.

This has happened to me, and it's astounding how much they get wrong. And don't care to correct, once you try to correct them.

McGreevey is the absolute pinnacle of NJ politicians, as far as I can tell. Accused by his wife of running gay orgies in the Governors mansion (she liked to attend, it turns out), he was pressed to resign and finally did when it emerged that he appointed his favorite butt boy, an Israeli spy, to advise him on "homeland security". Then it came out that he was collecting two state pensions while also governor, as Mayor of his hometown of Woodbridge and as a State legislator. When he resigned, the rumor was he got to keep collecting those pensions, as well as triple-dipping with a Governors pension.

Then, he became an Episcopal priest. I'm told he is very entertaining.

301 “They Don't Want to Hear It”. Christie’s hot mic truth bomb. CHARLIE SYKES. Right up until the end, Christie — that deeply flawed, infuriating, exasperating, irritating man — was a magnificent beast.

He admitted that he made mistakes and told the truth. In Republican politics these days, that is vanishingly rare. And he did it more forcefully and clearly than any other Republican whose name is not Cheney or Kinzinger. That’s what made him absolutely toxic in the GOP circa 2024. “I would rather lose by telling the truth than lie in order to win,” Christie said. So he never had a shot, and now he’s gone.

...as a Never Trumper, I’m used to disappointment, and I’m now bracing for a replay of the GOP’s many capitulations to the low-rent wanna-be Caesar from Queens.

Christie’s departure was worthy of the rest of his campaign, including (especially?) his refusal to endorse any of his Republican rivals...Last night, he posed this stark challenge: "Do you think (The Founders) could imagine that the country they risked their lives to create would actually be having a conversation about whether a convicted criminal should be president of the United States?

I got up this morning, felt like someone dropped a pallet of Iranian cash on my head, so I decided to stay home (feeling a little better now).

Sent the boy off to his day program, and went back to bed. Cats kept clawing my face, as if to check if I was still alive, or to let me know I didn't belong there, in my bed, during their shift.

When it was time for me to put to sleep, the BEST CAT EVAR, we had the vet come to the house. She did a great job setting it all up, and when we were pretty much done with the process, she told me to look at the other cats.

They were pointed in the opposite direction, alert and perched, as if on guard duty. I never noticed it before, but it really did look like they were at attention, keeping watch while their brother was guided on to the next life.

The PA Secretary of State illegally mailed out 250,000 mail in ballots before the 2022 election. Those were simply out in the world to be cured and returned. Nothing was done to the PA Secretary of State. In fact, he became governor.

How does DeSantis (or any other Republican candidate for president, including Trump) counter that?

Please...say lawsuits. That would entertain me.

345 The original story said elective surgery. So whether it was elective surgery, or treatment for prostrate cancer, they're switching it up.

This of course, in copland, is how they try to getcha eventually. Mark down where you switched your story, until you don't remember anymore, and somehow the truth manages to emerge.
Posted by: BurtTC at January 11, 2024 04:17 PM

Technically it was elective surgery, because it wasn't an acute emergency requiring immediate attention. But they knew that to most people, "elective" = "nothing serious.". So they made sure to call it "elective" until it came out that he has prostate cancer.

There's lots of valid, bad things you can say about his really stupid idea to hide his illness, but it being "AWOL" is not one of them. You can compare it to being AWOL, but it isn't AWOL.

Also, you can't court martial him for this.
