Oh Boy: Polar Vortex Will Plunge the West and Midwest into -50 Degree Icebox Next Week

WEATHER FREAK!

(When Drudge didn't have any scoops to report -- which was 96% of the time -- he trolled the wires for WEATHER FREAK! stories.)

Dang, this is going to be horrible.

Bundle up and stock up.

Arctic blast bringing temperatures of -50F - 78 degrees below normal - is forecast to strike West and Midwest next week

That's confusing. They mean temperatures could fall to 50 below, which is 78 degrees below the usual average of 28 degrees.

An arctic blast threatens to bring temperatures of -50 degrees to large swathes of the West and Midwest next week

Meteorologists have said the polar vortex could sweep across the Pacific Northwest and roll into the Central and Midwest over the next five to ten days

By Alice Wright For Dailymail.Com

An arctic blast may bring temperatures of -50 degrees to swathes of the West and Midwest next week.

The polar vortex could sweep across the Pacific Northwest and roll into the Central and Midwest of the country over the next five to ten days, meteorologist Ryan Maue said.

Weather outlooks from the National Weather Service's Climate Prediction Center show the cold blast arriving late next week for Central and Eastern parts of the US.

...

Higher precipitation is also expected, which could increase the possibility of snowfall.

...

The potential blast has been compared to the cold weather disaster of Storm Uri in February 2021, which left more than 4 million Texans without power for a record 70.5 hours.

That came after 365 generators were knocked offline as a result of the storm.

Texas, which relies on its own supply and is unprepared for winter conditions, has buckled.

I guess we'd all better stock up on supplies.

Meanwhile, the south is being hit with tornado and blizzard blizzard warnings.

Tornadoes tore through Florida's Panhandle.

They canceled school for Junior. Second Junior's daycare went into a tornado lockdown at one point today (we kept him home because Junior was home and who cares...it's daycare).

It got pretty gusty outside my window as I watched old Best of the Worst today. The contractors just kept on working on the bathroom. There was just the occasional howl. Also, the wind was up.

58 8 what's worse, extreme heat or extreme cold?

I dunno about comparative danger levels of the extremes, but there have been studies about living costs of hot climates vs. cold (heating vs. AC and such).

IIRC warmer temps were notably cheaper and also had longer/better growing seasons.

I have to think that water freezing causes additional problems not included in the calculations, but maybe that's accounted for.

This weather alarmism is getting ridiculous. They're doing this shit on purpose to get everyone all scared of climate change/globull warmuning.

We had a little rain and blow this morning. Pretty nice little storm event. Peak rainfall rate here hit 4.3"/hr and we had 1" accumulation in 40 minutes here. Total rainfall since midnight is about 4.5". And some wind.

I've never seen so many alerts being issued. Miley's little flip phone went off and got stuck on some damned alert tone. BRAP, BRAP, BRAP! Same sound as the Emergency Alert crap on TV.

I had to power cycle the stupid thing to shut it off.

Posted by: Huck Follywood at January 09, 2024 05:03 PM (w/OAj)

Of course the wind farms will fail.

But, the problem last time was that there were valves in the natural gas lines that were supposed to be cold weather-proofed(properly insulated) but were not and froze.

The state has now claimed that that issue has been fixed. Abbott seems good in that regard. If there's a problem, he'll light a fire under people.

But, we'll see.

The main problem was initially caused by Oblabla shutting down 3 coal-fired power plants with no replacements, except wind power and that's where Abbott and the state failed the people miserably.

Weather stations can be way off if they’re not properly setup. Like for instance to get accurate readings it has to be 6-8 feet off the ground and far away from the house. Otherwise ground/home heat will be a factor. And wind readings can be waaaaay if there’s something either blocking the wind or if there’s some artificial wind runner created, such as two houses close together.

-

There's a band out of Portland or Seattle called the Butchers and the Builders that have two snare (and I think other simple) drummers. It gives them a pretty interesting sound.

youtube.com/watch?v=gzDqCcTeSmY

They're brutal, though. If "There Will Be Blood" was modern sort-of-okay garage-ish Americana music, it would be that band.

209 When Jimmy waltzed into office with a $3 million dollar bash. > The cover of Time Magazine, Jan. 31, 1977, The Big Freeze

A little of the inside story: "Why had the rain turned white? Startled millionaires wintering in the baronial mansions in West Palm Beach, FL peered closer last week at the miracle that was falling from the skies and discovered - could it be? - yes, the substance was snow, the first ever reported there. Since mid-November, pedestrians in Dallas, unaccustomed to such hazards, have been slipping on sleet-slicked sidewalks. Meanwhile, a series of blizzards has smothered Buffalo this winter with an astonishing 126.6 in. of snow."

"... If February roars like January, this winter could be the coldest ever recorded for much of the U.S. - the great winter that millions of Americans will be telling their grandchildren about decades from now."

Guess it happens on occasion. Like the Big Dry of July 4, 1988; The Flood of '93, July 26, 1993; On the Trail of Twisters, May 20, 1996; Are we making Hurricanes Worse,? October 3, 2005, and so on.

We could stop building 3-4 story, prison like, no yard, condos/homes on every available open square foot, too?

273 That's sidebar link is a song that was made back in the days when editing music recordings involved taking a razor blade and actually cutting magnetic tape, then splicing the pieces together with actual tape.

They didn't have a title for the song, but the resulting tape after they finally finished editing had all sorts of splices on it, and the drummer commented that it looked like Frankenstein's monster. They decided to name the song "Frankenstein"

It gets played on classic rock stations around Halloween every year, and I am always happy to hear it.

The original version is more complicated and also shorter. It was fun seeing and hearing the 9 minute live version.

274 had a dream my friend came running through warning us a tornado was coming so we all laid down on the floor but I thought this doesn't make sense, shouldn't we be down in the basement?

This was about 3 weeks ago so I don't know if it was a portent of today. Seems to far ahead of the event.

275 I love the stretch on the temp spread as well- -50 is the WIND CHILL (it never hits -50 real temp unless you're in Nome) whereas the 28 degrees is the average REAL TEMP! Gotta make this EVEN MORE TERRIFYING!!11!! Those of us who live here will just shrug and go to work.

276 My possible retirement bolthole, the Evansville, IN, area, looks to have the worst temps be around 12-13 degrees as highs, 5 as lows, for about two days; then back up to 23/15 after that, and back up to the low 40s by the week following. That doesn't sound like 50 or 78 degrees below normal.

Naw Evansville is totally 90 degrees in wintertime.

277 So the forecast here calls for minus 40°. Does anyone know if that's °C or °F?

278 I paid for seasonal snow plowing of my driveway. So I'm just glad I may get my money's worth. If that snow plow has to do my driveway 3 times in the next few days, I'll be happy.

Check the fine print, the season is summer.
