Is DEI DIEing?

Eyepatch John McCain introduces a bill to forbid federal funding for any colleges that demand pro-DEI loyalty oaths.

Texas Congressman Dan Crenshaw is the latest Republican politician to introduce legislation to combat mandatory Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion statements in higher education.

On Dec. 18, Crenshaw announced proposed legislation that would prohibit federal funding to any college or university that forces its students to write or support DEI statements.

"We can see the utter moral bankruptcy in higher education with the spread of antisemitism on college campuses," Crenshaw said in a press release.

"Make no mistake -- the DEI bureaucracy is directly responsible for a toxic campus culture that separates everyone into oppressor vs oppressed," he continued. "That's why I am dropping legislation to protect free thought and prevent federal funding for universities that force students to write diversity, equity, and inclusion statements."

More specifically, the bill would amend the Higher Education Act of 1965 "to prohibit institutions of higher education from requiring ideological oaths or similar statements, and for other purposes." If enacted, the legislation would also bar colleges from imposing such statements on prospective employees and applicants.

The Washington Examiner says DEI is in retreat.

Diversity, equity, and inclusion, or DEI, in higher education was deceptively sold as a set of policies designed to promote "the fair treatment and full participation of all people," particularly groups that "have historically been underrepresented." But DEI offices have proved to be epicenters of division and ideological conformity, stirring hostilities and imposing an intolerant monoculture.

Fortunately, 2023 saw more than a dozen states start to take action against the DEI hydra, with six achieving concrete steps that other states should follow.

In Florida, colleges and universities are no longer allowed to allocate any money to DEI programs. Institutions across the state have, in consequence, eliminated DEI jobs, such as chief diversity officers. This is greatly to the good of real education and social cohesion. These officers are often in charge of college "bias response teams" that function as "woke" police on campuses. A Supreme Court case is set to shut many of these programs down, but states can take proactive steps now to solve the problem faster.

Texas and other states are following DeSantis' lead.

John Sexton wrote that corporations are retreating from the hardcore racist discriminatory policies they ran to implement after the non-murder of St. George Floyd.

Quoting Reuters:

JPMorgan (JPM.N) received a letter in May 2022, alleging 10 of its DEI initiatives were discriminatory and unlawful. Around February 2023, the descriptions of the bank's "Advancing Hispanics & Latinos" and "Advancing Black Pathways" programs were changed, according to archived versions of its website.

The programs that were previously for Black and Latino students now invite applications from all students, "regardless of background."...

Investment manager BlackRock (BLK.N), which received a letter in April, removed language stating a scholarship was "designed for" members of specific underrepresented groups...

The companies where Reuters found changes included Pizza Hut operator Yum! Brands (YUM.N), American Airlines (AAL.O) and Lowe's (LOW.N), which declined to comment...

In their most recent executive compensation plans, Yum! Brands removed references to specific racial groups and American Airlines dropped numerical diversity targets.

2 And I don't know if DIE is dying. I know in WA, they are still hiring DIE activists for roles in government jobs. In fact, they're expanding it.

So I expect this war to go on. But it's nice to see pushback and failure.

28 Great. But it's hard for colleges to comply with something like this when Obama or Biden use Title IX to force them to implement DEI. Title IX needs to be reformed or abolished or else this is nothing but a stunt.

The federal government does the same thing to businesses - they use the Civil Rights Acts to force businesses to use DEI but then make quotas and whatnot illegal. Businesses wind up being woke just to protect themselves from lawsuits and federal scrutiny.

If this is where Lowe's wants to go, I have a lot of alternatives that don't gross me out. Plus, it looks like the 5% discount on purchases they're going to negate quite a bit of with a paper billing charge.

yeah, I thought it was Freddie that banged his head on the wall, and they tried to blame the cops that were driving the van where he was in custody. Another guy in the van at first said he did it intentionally ... to make it look like cops had beat him I guess.

He chose poorly, and died from the experience. That was Baltimore "give them room to riot", also where we got the black mom on video, dragging her son away from the riots, smacking him and screaming at him. heh

Reading JJs link on Shigella from the morning report. The article quotes the CDC in saying there are 450,000 cases in the USA annually. I thought this had to be an error.

I looked on CDC website and they have annual reports from 2007 to 2016. They only show about 11,000 lab tested cases in 2016 and no real data after that date other than the number quoted above.

Questions.
1. Why did they stop putting out detailed reports?
2. Has the number of cases soared with illegal immigration?

I am not sure if the 450K number is an estimate based on 11K positive tests, or if it represents a big increase in positive tests.

Also note the photo at top of page. Says a lot. https://www.cdc.gov/shigella/index.html
Data I quote is from data link at bottom of page.

137 Happy to have missed the gay porn thread. To counter that, I can relate what happened no less then 10 minutes ago. Destruction testing one of my carbon fibre suppressors on a Glock 19 compact in 9mm. Fixed the stoppage problem caused by using the standard barrel which we threaded, not an extended threaded barrel, by putting a ring spacer (fiddley thing to make, 2mm by .3mm thick and perfectly round). So it functions well, put a couple of mags through at a high rate of fire. Loaded the single round which had a light strike and boom. Carbon fibre sleeve failed, and as I was not wearing ear protection (due to it being a suppressor and all) and the internal muzzle break was now external, it really rung my bells. Lucky that the doggie was in the truck.

FWIW, it's just one data point, but my parents and their peers are pretty lockstep traditionalists and rejected the counterculture completely.

Silent Generation were the people born before WW2 ended and preceded the Boomers. It was a baby "boom" because all the men returned home from war and people got pregnant.

The biggest problem with Boomers is probably the easy money scam the federal reserve played during the course of their lives. They don't seem to be able to wrap their heads around just how much of the "prosperity" they think they experienced was fake and still needs to be paid for.

231 There is no "official" definition of Boomer.

The guy who invented the category defined it as 1945 to 1960.

Some academics prefer 10 year "generations," some 15 year, and some 20. There seems to be a fairly recent consensus around 20 year, but it is meaningless.

My definition is that "boomers" were part of the boom, which ended before 1960 and those born after were part of the bust -- school attendance was down, etc. and that generation was also part of the Vietnam war radicalism (helped along by people dodging into colleges to avoid draft) and does not include those who were not even teenagers when the draft ended.

237 > Generational attributes are akin to using BMI as an predictor of health.

I would say BMI is a pretty good predictor of health for people age 30-65 or so. It falls apart for tall people, very muscular people, young people who are especially obese, and elderly people.

Elderly people begin to have many health issues in older age even if they're fit. Young people who are especially obese have a window of a few years of relatively good health before their health starts failing quickly. Tall and or muscular people will find BMI to be a poor indicator of health.

242 Oh yeah? We had to stick the pureed squash under the dinner table in order to be excused!

That nasty shit ^^^right up there^^^, kid Bif would have to had his ass beat to eat that. Mom would come to the table with a switch, belt, or flipflop to beat my ass in order to get me to eat veggies. Cousins refused to come visit, as they would get their ass beat too.

243 Where else would you like to start a life?

1946 until 1964. The GIs came home and began making babies. Yeah, I'm a "boomer", born 2 years after WW2 ended, 1947.
