The "Mazes and Monsters" Tribute Album You Didn't Know You Needed

"Mazes and Monsters" was a book and then a TV movie. The story was a fictionalized version of a student at Michigan State (IIRC) who went missing. The Fake News account of the disappearance was that he crazy from playing Dungeons & Dragons and disappeared into the tunnels under the school, lost in a fantasy world. This idea was proposed by a private detective paid to find the kid. He couldn't find him, but he seized on the D&D theory.

In fact, he went to some other school to hook up with someone without telling anyone. It didn't have anything to do with D&D.

But the story was out there for exploitation and got exploited.

Below, the very silly conclusion of the TV movie, taking place atop the Two Towers.

After that, choice quotes from that movie, and that scene, made part of a dungeonpunk synth track.

It's all very, very silly.

I've wanted to post that for a year but kept putting it off because basically three people in the world would even get it.

So here's something else for everyone else.

6 Yeah I remember the stupidity in that era like 'Mothers Against Dungeons and Dragons' and lunacy like claiming rock bands were convincing kids to commit suicide.

I always use it to remind people of the reason so many young people joined the left, because they were sick of the religious busybody Karens on the right.

Now, of course those Karens have moved to the left, and wokeness and racism are their new religions.

13 Among my favorite Tom Hank stories, some kid who was supposedly used as a sex toy for the rich and powerful, was going to go public... until he was mysteriously hit by a car that swerved toward him as he stepped off a curb.

Hank subsequently posted a tweet with a photo of the spot on the curb, and some number or whatever, that is used by the Illuminati or some such org.

I don't know if it's true or not, but I could see Tom Hank being a member of the Hollyweird pedo ring. Well, one of the Hollyweird pedo rings. There are several. Allegedly.

----------

I remember the story of this IBM cubicle drone who was always talking about how much he hated the grind and how one day he was going to chuck it all and head for a tiny island in the Caribbean to live out his years in a carefree paradise.

One day, he didn't come in. Didn't call, didn't email. He just disappeared. Nobody had a clue what happened to him.

Over time, a mini-cult developed around the guy. Folks at IBM would gather in bars periodically to commemorate the one slave who broke the mold and decided to live life on his own terms. They would imagine where he was now and what he was doing. It always involved beaches, sunsets, grass huts and beautifully exotic women.

Years later one of the IBM workers ran into him. In a convenience store in San Jose. Turns out the guy had left IBM for a better job offer at Compaq.

I love this story for its hope-crushing qualities.

125 So my true D&D story.

I was playing with my brother and a couple of friends of his in the early 80s. One of his friends was the DM and I don’t remember the particular quest or whatever. I was an elf wizard (lawful good I think).

Anyway I had acquired a fireball wand somewhere during our quest. We eventually made it to a dungeon or caverns in a mountain and after awhile we came upon some altar with candles burning. A demon started coming out of the altar so I started using my fireball wand, I didn’t stop either, just kept pumping him full of fireballs. I think my brother and his friend were taking some damage from the blowback (maybe me too) but I didn’t care.

Eventually I defeated the demon so I got to roll for power increase or whatever you call it. After rolling the dice and the DM looking in the manual, he looked up in disbelief and told me I was now a level 85 wizard. At that point the game was pretty much over. I think I was so powerful that Gandalf, Sauramon, and Sauron would’ve been my bitches. LOL.

I was so amped up I wanted to find the nearest skyscraper IRL and jump off to see if I could fly.

167 LA has some darker, seamier history for sure. Lots of murderers and the usual depravity right from the start. Lots of fires, too. Dave McGowan wrote a book about Laurel Canyon and inhabitants that discusses some of the weirder things, and there were a lot. One of the earliest, if not the first “hippies” in LA was a Rockefeller cousin. True story. The “Counterculture” was an OP, brought to you by Time-Life.

Freedom Rock!

The “Black Dahlia” murder was an indication of some weird stuff in the 50s.

246 I knew someone in high school who did indeed go somewhat crazy after losing himself in DnD. I don't think the game itself drove him nuts -- I believe he was diagnosed with schizophrenia -- but the "quest lifestyle" and middle-earth fantasy ethos certainly inspired him. When they found him, he was living in a cozy little compound he had built in the infamous ravine at the west side of (then-named) Toronto International Airport. Also knew someone in university who lost at least one year to her obsession with DnD. She could recite many of the rule and expansion books by heart, but could not focus on her classes. Lost at least one year; was not looking good for her following year when I lost contact with her.

So, D&D encouraged kids to be lawyers? Wow! D&D really was satanic!

249 Dad's friends told me they would try to get Dad liquored up for Trivial Pursuit because it would slow down his reflexes on hitting the button, and that was the only way they could get an advantage outside of sports and entertainment.
Dad was a genius and could hold surprising amounts of liquor.

250 A YouTube series War and Truth brings up lots of errors and downright made up things in the Band of Brothers series. Some guys had stories spot on, others get back stabbed or wrong time events . It's a good video series

251 This is why they now have all of the themed editions. But you have to find other people who specifically share your interest in whatever the theme is or it's no fun.

Ya know what really grinds my gears? People who think that the "Genus Edition" is the "Genius Edition" and that they're geniuses if they don't totally suck at it.

252 The only movies I have seen Tom Hanks in are "Sully" and "Saving Mr. Banks" which I think he did a good job in and as the voice in "Toy Story".

I like "That Thing You Do". Brought me right back to a very happy time period in my life. The movie was written and directed by him and he also wrote a few of the songs used in the movie.

253 >>>20 This was pre-Satanic Panic, wasn't it?

people roll it into the Satanic Panic but as I remember it, this was pre or proto Satanic Panic. This was like 1983-84, and I dont' think the real Satanic Panic started until Geraldo and Sally Jessie Raphael in the early 90s.

254 >>>25 The Greatest American Hero had a similar episode that was even more painfully over the top. I don’t remember the name of the game but it involved lots of candles, rote phrases, and no separation between player and character.

That was after they cancelled the show. I think they burned off the last episodes in a couple of nights.

Simon and Simon had one with a game called "Angels and Demons."

255 I used to have 'Mazes and Monsters' on a Beta cassette. We taped it off TV. ABC Movie of the Week or something. 80's film staple Chris Makepeace was in it too with his giant Jew-fro.

256 I am surprised Tom Hanks didn't buy the rights and bury that stinkbomb.

257 The movie was silly.

The book by Rona Jaffe was very good.

Playing D+D was a way for some of the books characters to entertain themselves, get away from some of the pressures of family and college life for a while. The main focus of the book was the characters relationships to each other.

I read the book 35 or so years and and still vividly remember it.

The movie tried to cash in on the late 70s - early 80s D+D craze, and didn't succeed.

258 206 Tom Hanks's best role ever was in a "Wayne's World" cold open on SNL as Garth's cousin who was a roadie for Aerosmith. He gave it 100% like he was acting for an Oscar.
