Hamas Official: Say, Just Blue-Skying It Here, What If We Drop This Whole "Israel Must Be Destroyed" Mishegas?

Israel's oldest, bitterest, most implacable foe once again demanded that Israel cease its war against the glorious liberation movement of Hamas.

Israel is losing international support due to its "indiscriminate bombing" of Gaza, US President Joe Biden said, issuing his most scathing critique of Israel since the start of the war and calling for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to switch out his coalition partners.

"Israel's security can rest on the United States," Biden stated during a campaign event Tuesday, as he touted his government's strong support of Israel.

Right now, however, Israel has wider support than just the US, Biden explained, as he pointed to the European Union and the international community which has also backed the Jewish state in the aftermath of Hamas' October 7 attack.

"But they're starting to lose that support by the indiscriminate bombing that takes place" in Gaza, Biden said, in a statement that implied Israel was needlessly targeting civilians.

Speculation is high that Biden will ask Israel to constrain its military campaign to oust Hamas from Gaza as attention in Washington is redirected to the 2024 run for the White House within in a geo-political atmosphere of low Democratic support for the Gaza war.

...

[Biden] has remained staunch in his support providing military and financial aid. The US will "do everything in our power to hold Hamas accountable -- every single thing in our power. They're animals. They exceeded anything that any other terrorist group has done," Biden said on Tuesday.

If Israel will just stop doing everything within its power to hold Hamas accountable, Biden vows the US will do everything within its power to hold Hamas accountable.

What?

Biden also said he chastised Netanyahu about his "indiscriminate" bombing, and Netanyahu pointed out that the US had bombed Nazi Germany and dropped atom bombs on Japan. Biden conceded this but said that we set up "institutions" to stop this from ever happening again.

Biden alluded to a private conversation in which the Israeli leader said: "'You carpet bombed Germany, you dropped the atom bomb, a lot of civilians died.'"
Biden said he responded: "Yeah, that's why all these institutions were set up after World War Two to see to it that it didn't happen again ... don't make the same mistakes we made in 9/11. There's no reason why we had to be in a war in Afghanistan."

It was a mistake to go to war in Afghanistan? And Biden thinks we "carpet bombed" Germany?

What a scholar. He's a doctor like his wife is.

Well, I guess I'm being pedantic. We certainly did fire-bomb Germany industrial centers.

But not "carpet-bomb." That's a different thing.

He's old. And when he was young, his brain was still... how best to say... small and rotten and set on rape.

In any event, Israel is not "indiscriminately" bombing. In fact, they're avoiding bombing as much as they can, putting troops in harm's way by going house to house when they could, if they wanted, just level the houses.

Netanyahu responded obliquely to Biden-- with contempt.

Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has hit back at growing international calls for a ceasefire, insisting that "nothing" will stop his country's mission to destroy Hamas, the Palestinian terror group that attacked Israel on Oct. 7.

Netanyahu struck the defiant note a day after the 193-nation U.N. General Assembly voted overwhelmingly to demand a ceasefire in Gaza, the densely populated and Hamas-ruled Palestinian enclave that has been the subject of near-relentless Israeli bombing for more than two months.

More than 150 nations backed the resolution demanding a ceasefire, with 23 abstentions, and only 10 countries, including the U.S., voting against the call.

But Netanyahu on Wednesday appeared unfazed by the vote, saying during a visit to a military detention facility in northern Israel that "we are continuing until the end, until victory, until the elimination of Hamas," according to the Times of Israel.

"Nothing will stop us," he added.

Israel also says the days of the "two-state solution" are over, which again puts them crosswise with Grampa Funnyfingers.

Another significant divide is emerging between the U.S. and Israel, with a senior Israeli diplomat saying the country "absolutely" would not accept a two-state solution following the war. This runs counter to long-standing U.S. policy objectives in the region, as well as recent Biden comments. Yesterday, a State Department spokesperson said "there can be no lasting peace and security" without a Palestinian state.

Israel has begun The Big Flush.

Israel has begun the process of flooding the network of tunnels beneath Gaza in an effort to flush out the impacted Hamas assets lodged there, according to U.S. officials who spoke to the Wall Street Journal. The Israeli military operation has so far involved the installation of seven massive pumps and testing the process of flooding the Hamas holes with water from the Mediterranean Sea, and now the great enema has begun in earnest.

Supposedly -- and I do not know if this site is trustworthy and if it is, how good this tip is -- Qatar can't guarantee the safety of the Hamas leaders hiding out there in luxury any longer:

Israel War Room
@IsraelWarRoom

#BREAKING: Initial reports suggests that top Hamas brass in Qatar have been told to leave for Algeria, as their security can no longer be guaranteed.

You know how Christiane Amanpour denies that Hamas has terrorist bases inside hospitals? Well somehow Israel forces are fought and defeated Hamas terrorists inside a hospital.

IDF troops from the 460th Combat Brigade of the 162nd Division operated in the Kamal Adwan Hospital area with the Shin Bet, with scores of Hamas terrorists being killed or detained.

During the operation, the IDF troops located a building close to the hospital that was being used by Hamas terrorists. An exchange of fire took place, in which a number of Hamas terrorists were killed.

Some 70 terrorists surrendered and left the building with their weapons and were detained and taken for interrogation by the Shin Bet.

Kamal Adwan Hospital is in the Beit Lahiya area north of Gaza City, near the Israeli border.

And now, with Hamas' terrorists being killed and captured and its ratholes being flushed like the toilets they are, Hamas say -- say, how about we reverse our decades old vow that we would never, ever recognize Israel as legitimate and real nation?

How does that sound to you guys? Oh sure we will immediately repudiate that the recognition the moment you've withdrawn your troops, but we will recognize you as a state for about 35 hours if you just give us a ceasefire to let us regroup and hide the billions we collect from donations from other countries.

The Hamas official had broached this possibility earlier today by the PLO's (also fake) recognition of the state of Israel, and saying that Hamas might consider following the PLO's path, if Israel gives them the ceasefire they crave.

Earlier today, he told Al-Monitor, "You should follow the official stance... that the PLO [Palestine Liberation Organization] has recognized the state of Israel."

Hamas politburo chief Ismail Haniyeh said yesterday that he is open to talks for ending the ongoing war and "putting the Palestinian house in order both in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip," potentially leading to a "political path that secures the right of the Palestinian people to their independent state with Jerusalem as its capital."

I don't think Israel is going to buy that.

And anyway, Hamas is already walking it back.

Senior Hamas official Mousa Abu Marzouk tries to walk back comments he made earlier, suggesting that his terror group could recognize Israel for the first time as a step toward Palestinian unity.

Abu Marzouk tweets that there was a "misunderstanding of media statements." He asserts that "Hamas does not recognize the legitimacy of the Israeli occupation and does not accept giving up any of the rights of our Palestinian people. We affirm that the resistance will continue until liberation and return."

"Several points and phrases mentioned in my interview with Al-Monitor were distorted and do not express my position and the position of the movement, which has not changed," he adds.

I guess in Israel's case they can argue that's what you have to do to save hostages - but in our case we SHOULD have been doing "air raiding" as Kerry put it or "indiscriminate bombing" as Biden puts it.

Destroy a few cities from the air and suddenly the local scum won't want to ally with the jihadis...

A second Israeli official says the US has pushed for the current phase to wrap up by the end of 2023...... The New York Times also reported that the US is pushing for Israel to end large-scale fighting by the end of the year.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office responded to the report saying that the premier “made it clear that Israel will continue the war until we complete all of its goals.”

Yes it did. The USAAF ran out of city centers to burn before the end of the war. The two atomic bombs did 3% of the damage to cities. The rest we burned out.

Underreported, the USAAF conducted a mining campaign after the cities were burnt out. No intercostal traffic, as we isolated every harbor and fishing hamlet.

But we should be more humane, and give every Pali in Gaza and the Hamas terrorists in pre-execution custody, a Pfizer COVID-19 Wuhan vaccine. Because we are givers.

82 Anyone remember how the decades long civil war by Sri Lanka against the Tamil Tigers finally ended?

BTW. The Tamil Tigers invented the high explosive suicide vest. Lovely people.

Sri Lanka had finally cleared and isolated the Tamil Tigers to a small area. They brought up the army and proceeded to attack and destroy any Tiger resistance. The UN and all the NGOS were absolutely apoplectic that Sri Lanka was not stopping to "negotiate" with the Tamil Tigers, but merely killing and capturing any of them they could find. They stopped the insurgents once and for all.

Recently, Sri Lanka was in the news because the Leftist government decided unilaterally to ban all Herbicides, Pesticides and Fertilizers. All of them with no warning.

Obviously food and export agriculture products collapsed. Foreign Exchange reserves disappeared, and imports like oil and suddenly FOOD skyrocketed in price. So the government was in deep trouble with riots and such.

Guess what didn't happen? No reignition of the Tamil insurgency.

I think his point was largely just that the bombing was...very large and very expansive.

I think there's an argument that war crimes might be an effort to legalize rules of conquest, elevating the legalese over anything else.

Essentially, my view is if a country starts a war, they need to expect that every inch of their nation will become a battleground. It's an important consideration to make.

There is an argument - and it isn't totally insane - that had the USN had marked merchant preference for the submarine fleet instead of a warship preference (the warships were more or less decoys by 1943 and the IJN was not a powerful force to be reckoned with), it might have obviated the need for the nukes (though probably not the overall strategic bombing campaign) by starving them out a lot more quickly in both food and resources.

When the wolf packs were set on merchant shipping, Japanese survivability started to collapse quickly. It didn't happen until later 1944, though, and by then virtually everything was coming to pieces anyway. No way to test the theory and its hard to argue with the final outcome.

That assumption was almost certainly correct. The Soviets had a fairly easy time of it when they landed on Hokkaido, but Hokkaido wasn't well defended - everything was in the south to greet the Americans.

But that isn't exactly the point of the hypothetical. The point of the hypothetical is that if we had gone after merchant shipping with full aggression starting in, say, mid 1943, it would have been devastating enough that Japan's production and food situation would have been so destroyed that the war would have ended without the atom bomb and with no (or a fairly easy) initial ground invasion of the home islands.

Again, no way to test it and so its all just so much mental masturbation, but the efficacy of the US submarine forces against Japanese merchant shipping was staggering once the US got around to it.

Yup. That campaign was assumed - probably correctly - to be monstrously expensive.

And it would have ended up with a divided Japan. Nearly did anyway. Roosevelt (then Truman) did *not* want Stalin in that war. They gave Stalin free reign over Japanese possessions in Mongolia and Manchuria instead. Stalin doesn't listen too good, though, and did it anyway. The Soviets were in the process of trying to take Hokkaido when the war ended. They weren't very good at amphibious warfare and they had a lot of losses, but had the Japanese not surrendered to us - and it was to *us* and not the allies - then the USSR probably would have ended up with half of Japan like they did with Korea.

That is a valid argument, except for the fact that NavOrd insisted their torpedoes worked great, and the sub skippers were lousy shots.

USS Nautiles hit a IJN carrier (ISTR Kaga) at Midway, and the torpedo broke in two. The air flask saved some IJN sailor's lives.

We needed to fix the torpedoes first, install radar on the subs, and get a Wolfpack command system first.

We were already hitting tankers as priority targets.

They wanted to concentrate on the CBO plan to take out factories of military value and military targets. The RAF was the organization pushing the bombing of cities and the firebombing in places like Dresden. While Germany was certainly hitting London, after a lot of reading and discussion I opposed it as a tactic. The idea was to "break" the German people's spirit. By killing them. You automatically lose the moral high ground, if there is any to be had in war when you wage it against civilians.

You teach people by debellating the enemy of the moment. We did that. We annihilated the German and Japanese and Italian regimes. Dead. Kaput.

Along with a horrifying number of their civilians.

For half a century, every cocksucking wannabe Hitler or Tojo or Mussolini took a few beats wondering whether to fuck with the big dog. And then they looked at the terrified, desperate faces of their hapless subject classes, who were in turn looking at the moment when they may actually have *nothing* left to lose, and thought better of that bullshit.

That's the point of annihilating a Dresden or a Tokyo.

But the British were all too keen to bomb the civilian population, I would say, out of frustration. There was almost no military objectives that could be met by killing a bunch of civilians. If they support the regime, you break their spirit by killing the regime and it's military operation. We didn't win the war because we hombre and firebombed civilians. We won because we ultimately destroyed their capacity to wage war and then fought their army until they had no option but to surrender.

318 "Well, I guess I'm being pedantic. We certainly did fire-bomb Germany industrial centers.

But not "carpet-bomb." That's a different thing."

Oh for fuck's sake. It is not hard to find literally hours of footage of 250/500lb dumb bomb impacts rolling across entire towns and cities, and tens of thousands of still pics of the results. The bomb sights were not nearly as accurate as hoped and the shift to night bombing didn't help either - so if you want to level a factory in town, you're most likely leveling the town in the process.

It's literally the classic example of carpet bombing, which has nothing to do with intent and is simply a method. It also stands in stark contrast to Israel using GPS guided single munitions, obviously.

356 Our modern war fighting challenge has nothing to do with our unwillingness to kill civilians. It has to do with a political branch that either has no desire or stomach to kill the enemy. So they build a bunch of ROE's that make them feel good, but handicap the warfighter and get him, and his brothers killed. It also prolongs the conflict into a stalemate. We also won the wars in AFG and IRQ very quickly. In IRQ we did it twice. Then the Clownshow at State and the political leaders lost both.

Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at December 14, 2023 03:15 PM (J2vNu)

Carpet bombing is a tactical bombing, putting lots of bombs on enemy troops in a defense, hopefully destroying the defenses and laying out a "carpet" for your men to move through without interference. It was done first at St. Lo in the breakout at Normandy after which we moved across France at a high rate of speed.

Bomb raids on cities are strategic bombing, which is another thing all together.

Carpet bombing was not incredibly effective in WWII - the troops at St Lo found it difficult to navigate the blasted landscape there even with very limited blowback from defenders. Modern precision munitions would do a better job with less firepower.

Even with the delay, though, after some work the breach in the line could not be plugged because air cover made moving troops around Normady extremely difficult and costly. Any unarmored vehicle moving in daylight risked getting strafed or bombed or both.

It has become a truism to remind people: the only way to win a war is to put an eighteen year old with a rifle on a spot of ground. You cannot win with an air war against a determined enemy. And say what you will about Hamas, but I think everyone agrees they are determined.
