Hasbro Will Slash 1,100 Jobs, 20% of Its Workforce

A toymaker announces huge layoffs right before Christmas.

Boy this Bidenomics economy is redhot!

Hasbro is slashing nearly 20% of its workforce amid an ongoing slump in toy sales.

Hasbro CEO Chris Cocks announced layoffs for 1,100 workers in a Monday memo to employees, cuts which come in addition to the roughly 800 jobs eliminated earlier this year.

Cocks said the decision to reduce Hasbro's workforce was made in light of market headwinds proving to be "stronger and more persistent than planned."

"We anticipated the first three quarters to be challenging, particularly in toys, where the market is coming off historic, pandemic-driven highs," Cocks said. "While we have made some important progress across our organization, the headwinds we saw through the first nine months of the year have continued into Holiday and are likely to persist into 2024."

Some Hasbro employees will find out whether their job has been eliminated this week, while the rest of the layoffs will happen over the next six months, Cocks said in the memo.

Hasbro, known for making toys such as Transformers and Play-Doh, and games like "Magic: The Gathering" and "Dungeons & Dragons," had 6,300 employees prior to the layoffs, according to its website.

Shares of Hasbro fell more than 4% in after-hours trading on Monday.

Layoffs at the toy company come after Hasbro cut its full-year revenue guidance in October -- just before the holiday season, which is usually the strongest sales period for toy makers. On the company's earnings call, Hasbro's Chief Financial Officer Gina Goetter warned that the company was seeing "broader toy category declines."

However, not all toymakers are expecting weakness this holiday season. One of Hasbro's competitors, Mattel, said in its most recent earnings that it benefited from the success of the "Barbie" movie and the company "expects to gain market share in the fourth quarter and full year."

Huh. So Hasbro's main brands are Dungeons and Dragons and Magic: the Gathering, huh?

I guess it must just be slumps in those brands causing the massive implosion, huh?

Think about a company whose name somehow always gets left out of negative media coverage. A company who the leftwing media always attempts to protect.

A leftwing media company that is currently collapsing -- but you'd hardly know it, if you just watch and read the leftwing media.

There's a major media company whose toys Hasbro sells, and because this major media company has alienated half of the country, and mismanaged its once gold-standard brands so badly that they're now second-rate and going unwanted in Ollie's discount bins.

Have you guessed which major media company I'm talking about?

Of course you have. The company that all other leftwing media companies always protect is, of course, Disney. Disney is a financial competitor, but they protect it because it is an ideological leader.

They approve of Disney's mission. Disney is leading them in the race to theocratic fascist transnational Marxism, and they're drafting in Disney's wake. If Disney can fly to the left without going bankrupt, then they can too.

And yes, CNN is hiding the fact that Hasbro is Disney's partner in selling its no-longer-hot Marvel lines and its ice-cold Star Wars line of toys. (And it's barely an afterthought Indiana Jones toys, but they never caught on for some reason.)

I've been watching World Class Bullshitter's tours of the unsold Star Wars merchandise "rotting on the shelves" for years. It's never been so delicious as now.

If you don't know, Ollie's is a discount merchandiser who buys out the unwanted stock of other stores and sells it at deep discounts. And then they they often have to slash their already-discounted prices to unload this unwanted crap to get it off their shelves.

I will mention again that Big, Bad Ike Perlmutter was forced out of Marvel partly due to his Sexist, Racist idea that boys would not buy girl action figures. Ike had nothing but prejudice behind this woman-hating idea, apart from the fact that he had previously owned ToyBiz and had spent an entire lifetime selling action figures, and in particular, Marvel action figures, when he was Marvel's partner.

When Marvel went bankrupt, he bought Marvel. Disney then bought Marvel from him, and he was on Disney's board.

He told Disney some Racist, Sexist shit like "you can't just try to force a bunch of girl crap on boys and expect them to buy it" and they said "yeah sure okay racist misogynist Trump-donor, don't let the door hit you on the way out" and kicked him out of his own company.

And now?

As (I think) WDW_Pro said, Disney has destroyed not just themselves, but Hasbro. They have also destroyed American theaters, who actually need to show movies people want to see during the holiday season to remain solvent. (Remember, "Black Friday" is so-named because it's the time of year when retailer's books turn from red to black. I don't think this quite applies to movie theaters but the holidays are a huge, huge time for them, and Disney has filled their screens with unwatchable, unsalable shit.)

How many American industries are going to go bankrupt before the Enemy of the People stops covering for the wannabe 2028 Democrat Presidential Candidate Bob Iger?

Answer: All of them. They will literally never stop covering for them.

Just for fun, let's see how Disney's "news" mouthpiece ABC "News" is covering the Hasbro layoffs: lol, joke's on you, they're ignoring it like a good little corporate newsletter

Related: South Carolina just took Disney off its list of companies approved for investing the state's retirement and other funds in, citing its aggressive opposition to free speech as a disqualifier.

As for why the state removed The Walt Disney Company from its approved investment list, Loftis explained in a statement to staff, "Disney has abandoned its fiduciary responsibilities to its investors and customers by joining far-left activist in boycotting legal, taxpaying, employment-creating corporations to further Disney's political agenda."

He further noted that "multi-billion-dollar corporations should not engage in boycotts designed to silence legitimate debate. Since America's founding, freedom of speech has been one of its core principles, and Disney should not engage in nefarious practices aimed at silencing those with less power and money."

Legal Mindset, a lawyer who specializes in the exact kind of special tax district laws that Disney was abusing in its Reedy Creek Improvement District grift, discusses the various laws Disney broke in this video, and the possibility of a state criminal RICO action that can be brought against all the former RCID officers -- and Disney's corporate officers, including Bob Iger, for misuse of public funds.

Finally, Disney is desperately rewriting history on their coming Snow White bomb, pretending that Rachel Ziegler always had the utmost respect for the original 1938 film, and also pretending that they always intended to have CGI dwarves in the movie, rather than the bizarre vagabond Phish roadies we'd already seen in leaked set photos.

Oh, and they're playing the "Only Racists Could Dislike This Film" card again, for the thousandth time. Can you believe that? Because I'm totally surprised.

12 I would love it if Magic: The Gathering took a huge hit over this. Their product has been worthless for years.

The cards are overpowered crap for the most part and they've oversaturated the market with various interpretations.

The Lord of the Rings cards were perhaps the worst offenders since the world and lore are NOT compatible with the "color-pie" philosophy that governs Magic: The Gathering rules.

Putting in language pandering to the alphabet people, their multifarious sexual dysfunctions, and insisting on modern treatments of such things in a game where one's character could actually be transformed and/or cursed into the opposite sex, or into an animal, or a monster, so what's the point in having a "trans character"....

It's the course-setter, yes. One of the reasons why the progs appear to moving to counter Peltz. They don't want to lose money - nobody does - but they would much rather piss money down Disney than allow it to pivot away from being the billion-ton gorilla in pushing The Message.

Just like with X. If they can't control it, they would rather destroy it. That's easier, because it's just Musk's money.

After TSR went bankrupt, it was acquired by Wizards of the Coast in 1997, but Hasbro in turn purchased WotC in 2000.

In a better world, this downturn in Hasbro's business would force them to sell the Dungeons & Dragons IP to someone who actually respected it.

It's a valuable propaganda organ.

The real question in my mind is not whether Disney will survive, because it will.

But we're already - finally - seeing a shift in media consumption. Foreign content has finally been able to breach this market, and it will continue. Korea rather than Japan will probably be the biggest player in this, but it won't be just Korea and Japan, either, and don't count out India or Australia, either (and a few others).

This is a problem. If American media - led by Disney - is pushing The Message in all things but nobody goes because they'd rather go see that Korea rom-com that doesn't, there's no way out of the trap other than forbidding TV/movie imports. Will they go that far?

I dunno. But that's my question.

Some say I am premature with that designation, and that what they've done is to push cases back to the lower courts to be more fully vetted. I'll call bullshit on that in advance and we're already seeing that Kavanaugh and ACB are having second thoughts or at least are searching for emanations and penumbras to limit that decision. Irrespective, the fact is that Democrats and their collaborators are weaponizing the court system against the people and using it as a way to stay in power. What history tells us is that ends in less liberty for the people, and beyond that nothing good. In that regard I believe the time leading up to and directly after our next election will say a lot about what the future will look like and how long people will stand for the overthrow of our government by the Democrats illegal cabal.

My company is in the process of being acquired and we're getting inklings of the numbers for how many are going to be bounced.

It is oddly only *now* that I am hearing lots of buzz about worry from a lot of people. This acquisition has been in the works for more than a year. Some people left immediately. Some people said, "okay, we'll see what happens, but I think I have good chances so it's time to get those savings up and be prepared to lose my job if it happens."

Those two groups comprise a distinct and fairly small minority. The ones who are now starting to worry and didn't do so until we got to the 11th hour, are about half. The rest still aren't worried. A serious majority took no steps to prepare for what is now to happen.

73 The Hasbro layoffs probably aren't that meaningful. WoTC D&D can probably coast indefinitely on cheap labor, an undeserved but somehow enduring reputation , and a player base of youngsters who likely are pretty far to the left (even if not as woke as the missionaries at WoTC). If dumb things like gaying the game up, including wheelchair-bound adventurers, and publishing people based on explicitly racial criteria didn't destroy the brand, what could?

96 Has to has made some very bad business decisions with both DnD and MtG in the last few years that are completely unrelated to The Message.

The latest DND licensing agreement came out this year which attempted to claim ownership of any creative content that people would make with it, effectively giving WotC the ability to take an arbitrarily large cut from groups like Critical Role, who make a living playing the game on YouTube, or anyone that sells fan-made content. This was met with huge backlash among the role playing game community.

They have also been, in my opinion as a (formerly) fairly serious Magic The Gathering player, squeezing that IP dry by doing increasing crossover sets, among other things.

They’re doing the woke stuff too, but like Disney, they also aren’t actually making an entertaining product any more, and a lot of people are starting to get disillusioned.

And even certain marvel sets don't move at all the ones based on wakanda 2 and the massively expensive black Panther bust that received some of the worst reviews in a couple years from long time LEGO fans. It is probably the only merchandise sales Disney can count as a win. But of course they only see money from the license. Not the sales.

When the company announces that a significant number of people, probably people who've never previously given serious consideration that they might lose their job, are going to lose their job... it hurts morale.

160 Re-dropping this here:

Two Japanese studios have made blockbusters for this season:

Studio Ghibli just released "The Boy and the Heron" which topped the box office this past weekend.

And "Godzilla Minus One" is still holding strong.

BOTH movies were made at 10% of the Disney "blockbuster" budgets, but have also both exceeded box office expectations because they BOTH tell emotional and engaging stories WITHOUT any of that "WOKE" shit.

294 Hasbro also owns the Masters of the Universe franchise (aka He-Man and She-Ra). It was a very popular cartoon and toy line in the late '80s. Kevin Smith announced he was releasing a sequel mini-series to the old cartoon. Lots of people were very hyped about it, and Hasbro got ready to crank up the money machine with new action figure sales.

And then odd rumors started to emerge. There were claims that He-Man died in the first episode, and the protagonist was a (newly butch) female supporting character. Smith denied the claims.

Spoiler warning: the claims were true.

The series flopped, and the money machine didn't go "Brrrrrrr!"

301 "Remember, Black Friday is so-named because it's the time of year when retailer's books turn from red to black."

That's not actually true, Ace. The term was first used in Philadelphia in the mid-70s by LEOs to describe the added calls associated with all the shoppers and those coming for a particular sporting event (the specifics of which escape me right now).

Almost everyone I know in retail has told me that they run profits throughout the year. The one exception was a guy who started up a restaurant. He wasn't turning a profit after five months and couldn't afford to stay open.

303 Hasbro had plans to make Magic and D&D into billion dollar brands. Those plans have been going more than a bit awry this because of multiple unforced errors. For D&D, these helped undercut the first decent movie they ever produced and have driven multiple publishers and supporters to become more direct competitors.
They are also stuck with a messaging problem for their planned new products.
On top of that, they want to make it a lifestyle rather than a game, and sell clothes, mugs, and other nonsense rather than game products.
They also want to "monetize" the game by making it a microtransaction product, which will require restricting it to a house server, and that will cause more customer alienation. Assuming of course they can finally make a digital product, something they have failed at repeatedly in the past because they try to do it on the cheap.
As it goes, they have already fired some of their top D&D designers with this, so they are likely some other internal issues going on.
