The Morning Rant: Minimalist Edition

punk-monkey.jpg

It's difficult to take California seriously as anything other than an unlimited source of ridiculous, freedom-robbing government action. But this one may be the pinnacle of the stupid, authoritarian, post-modern, woke foolishness that oozes from Sacramento.

But it is also a cautionary tale of what may very well be coming down the pike for the rest of the country. The arrogance of the left knows no bounds, and their belief that they have some Gaiaiaia-granted right to dictate how we live every aspect of our lives, how commerce is conducted, and the direction that the country MUSt take is immutable. It will never change, and their goal of complete power over us, including our thoughts, will never change.

California's latest insane gender policy takes effect next month

A law passed by the state legislature and signed by Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) in 2021 is set to take effect in the new year , mandating “gender-neutral” toy sections in large toy retail stores. As the Washington Examiner reported after Newsom signed the bill, “Retail stores that fail to comply with the mandate risk being penalized with $250 fines for initial violations and $500 fines for all subsequent violations.”

Where does the California legislature and their Brylcreem boy in the governor's mansion get the authority to dictate how stores set up their sales displays? Is this some imagined power, or does the California Constitution actually grant complete control over private industry?

Never mind...don't answer that question. With an unassailable majority in the legislature, the Democrat/socialist junta can do whatever the f*ck they please, and be damned with those pesky and outdated ideas of freedom and liberty.

“Keeping similar items that are traditionally marketed either for girls or for boys separated makes it more difficult for the consumer to compare the products and incorrectly implies that their use by one gender is inappropriate,” the legislation says .

The lawmakers who advanced this bill were very clear that gender ideology was driving their decision-making.

“The segregation of toys by a social construct of what is appropriate for which gender is the antithesis of modern thinking,” said Assemblyman Evan Low, who sponsored the bill. “We need to stop stigmatizing what’s acceptable for certain genders and just let kids be kids.”

Social engineering! Ain't it grand! And by an entitled little snot who is, of course, "openly gay!" Because that is just so brave and special in California in 2023. What's next? Maybe Evan Low can mandate a certain percentage of dolls must have epicanthic folds? And how about breasts AND a penis? Wouldn't that be even more inclusive? How about interchangeable genitalia for the gender-fluid kids?

But in the end, the people of California have voted for this sh*t, and they are getting what they deserve. One day the remaining Californians will wake up and discover that the conversion of what once was the greatest state in the nation into a third-world shithole...with walled communities, a subservient underclass, no middle class, rampant crime, no functioning infrastructure, and no recourse to the rule of law...will be complete, and there will be nothing they can do about it.

It would take a heart of stone not to laugh!

Um, when have toy sections *not* been gender neutral?
Never seen a section called "Girls Toys" or "Boys Toys" they just group them by toys typically liked by either sex. No one is stopping anyone from browsing or buying from any toy section -- there's no "You Must Be A Boy to Purchase a Lego Set" or "You Must Be A Girl to Purchase a Doll" rules of signage, for pete's sake. Kids have been enjoying whatever toys they like, from whatever aisle, forever.

This stupidity is so affected it's insulting.
This is not even a silly "first world problem," this is an imaginary problem that everyone knows is an imaginary problem that insists we should all take seriously.
No clothes on that emperor Newsom.

Just as a reminder:
A French national railroad company left California’s high-speed rail project to pursue other work in North Africa — and has already completed a project in Morocco.

SNCF, the French national railroad, was one of the original operators to come to California in the early 2000s to help develop the state’s “bullet train” that would run from San Francisco to Los Angeles. The rail company, however, opted to leave for the war-torn, yet “less politically dysfunctional,” North African country.

“There were so many things that went wrong,” SNCF Project Manager Dan McNamara told the New York Times. “SNCF was very angry. They told the state they were leaving for North Africa, which was less politically dysfunctional. They went to Morocco and helped them build a rail system.”

51 " But this one may be the pinnacle of the stupid, authoritarian, post-modern, woke foolishness that oozes from Sacramento."

Quibbling perhaps, but I've heard people say "It's not Wokeness, it is (social?) Marxism". But that is not it either, imo.

"Woke" is a tactic of the Commie/Marxist/Oligarch attack on free peoples everywhere. It may have first come out of the USSR, with efforts to undermine the family and Christian values (the foundation of America the Beautiful). Or much earlier, the "Red" influencers infiltration of Lincoln and his cabinet. (or before that, but I don't have the history chops to speak to that).

"Woke" is a weapon of mass destruction ... the "commies" don't have it in their own countries (much), it is a weapon meant to destroy societies. And not foolish, but very effective. (yes, most of the people that worship Wokeness are foolish, but they are the controlled masses).

Not unprecedented. South Africa has a scheme they call "Black Economic Empowerment," or BEE. BEE rules do things like this - some number of managers, directors, etc. must be black if the company is to operate in the country. They impose these requirements on foreign firms looking to do business in ZA.

One foreign firm that refused to bend the knee is - in a dramatic example of irony - Starlink. Starlink is not for sale in Musk's birth country - a country that desperately needs a grid-independent communications system because of how disastrous all the rest of the policies are - because it does not conform with BEE rules.

"I thought smoking in restaurants was banned?"

"Owner's customers smoke. So he pays the fine and gives his customers what they want."

It may have first come out of the USSR, with efforts to undermine the family and Christian values (the foundation of America the Beautiful). Or much earlier, the "Red" influencers infiltration of Lincoln and his cabinet. (or before that, but I don't have the history chops to speak to that). ...

Woke is woke, and it's called that because it isn't exactly the other things. There are of course similarities with the others, but is its own thing, developed by western academics for subjugation in the west.

Its closest analogue is in my opinion Maoism (of the Cultural Revolution era), but it isn't an exact fit.

Well, I was told yesterday that believing husbands and wives each have duties to one another was also the antithesis of modern thinking, so insanity isn't only the province of the left.

I think the Tamiya Corp. from Japan, and maybe some other companies, still make 1/35 scale model kits of WWII German Panzers and other equipment. Each usually comes with one or two scale soldiers. Of course you have to paint and assemble the models, which is not immediate gratification for the youngsters like already complete figures and toys, but it's still possible.

I doubt this has anything to do with politics and everything to do with money. LexisNexis probably didn't want to pay the price demanded by WaPo, and so the content was pulled.

Like when Disney-owned channels were pulled from Charter over a price dispute earlier this year. Like that case, LexisNexis and the WaPo will probably reach an agreement - or LexisNexis users will discover that they don't miss the WaPo archives and so WaPo will just permanently lose the revenue. I suspect the former.

Yes - but shockingly, it turns out that brands target certain markets, and so will lend themselves to thematic placement in the stores. It isn't a formal "boy section" and "girl section," but they're often distributed roughly along those lines because it makes sense to do so.

Not only are they in separate aisles, the aisles are walled off with armed guards to ensure the incorrect gender doesn't see toys not meant for them. Of course, the guards aren't permitted to question the declared gender of any child so it's all kind of pointless.

I had one of their .45s! Plus a lot of the Mattel Shootin' Shell pistols, the Single Action Army revolver and "Detective" snub-nosed .38, the Winchester '73 rifle, and even the "Rolling Block" rifle. My brother and I quickly lost the little "bullets," the gray plastic noses that clipped into the brass cartridge and which flew from the barrel when the hammer hit the cartridge -- much like the real thing. But we continued to put the little bang caps on the empty cartridges and happily blasted away.

Never for a second did I ever want a Barbie doll or even a Ken.

It's the only role Penn was mean to play because it's perfect for him.

234 California may be on to something! Why stop at "gender neutral toy displays"?! Shouldn't the legislature also decide other important questions, like how many detergent ads can run during soap operas, and what color cars sold in the state should be? What about models for the SI swimsuit issue? If Sports Illustrated wants to sell in California, the models should "reflect the diversity of the state"? Or something.

256 I'd like to see America 2.0 include a concept for city-states.

Something like increased influence within their borders for decreased influence outside of them, such as:

A city-state is allowed to send representatives to the state legislature, but they are not allowed to vote for governor. In order to vote for governor, a city-state must abandon its mantle as city-state.

A city-state's internal powers will include things like complete control of every aspect of human life, if they so choose.

I dunno. I just shat it out.

294 [Tangentially related, from a couple weeks ago:]

A new (Tranny Tyranny, natch) HHS Rule by The Junta would effectively ban Christians, Jews, Muslims, and literally All Sane People from participating in fostering and adopting children .

The rule would require foster or adoptive parents to support a child’s gender “transition.” The caretakers would have to affirm a child’s preferred pronouns, their “chosen name,” and “allow the child to dress in a way that reflects that gender identity.”

"GOP Rep. Jim Banks (IN) has unveiled a new bill that would cut off federal funding for child welfare agencies who discriminate against Christians and other people of faith."

I think "they" somehow managed to include the Bill of Rights as a limit on "State Sovereignty". Not sure what the "right" position is on that, but being stuck in Marxist run Illinois, am hoping for SOTUS intervention on the current "register your AR-15" law.

Soldier and war toys were big until the late '60s, when the Vietnam protests began. Of course by that time I was in high school and had no interest in such toys, but everything in media had shifted to "War is not good for children and other living things" and "What if they gave a war and nobody came?"

Now that you mention it, I don't recall "Jap" or "Nip" soldier figures offered by Marx or other toy companies. American and German, and of course we had Western figures with cowboys and Indians galore. But no Japanese. Aurora and other companies did issue the Japanese Zero plane as a model kit, but the German Focke-Wulf and Messerschmitt were much easier to find.

26' "Super Mover" truck for a one-way move, pick up on January 6:
San Jose to Atlanta: $6,181
Atlanta to San Jose: $3,415

The theme applies generally. Outbound from CA is expensive as shit regardless of destination. Inbound to CA is much cheaper regardless of origin. U-Haul - that is, middle-class moves - is almost all outflow and the company will give you the truck at damn near cost just for driving it to CA for them. Same for places like Denver.

378 Half an hour to lunch.

Figures: Nowadays they are marketed as "action figures," but in the early '60s Hartland had a whole range of Western TV heroes in plastic, painted, many of them mounted on a horse. There was also the Gunslinger line, standing figures with swiveling arms and detachable hats and guns. Paladin, Wyatt Earp, Roy Rogers and Dale Evans, Jim Hardie, Dan Troop the Lawman and his deputy Johnny McKay.

The best was Bat Masterson: He not only had his derby hat, but a crossdraw holster with his gun, and his silver-headed cane!

I had most of the range, and my mother kept them in storage until her passing. I kick myself every day that I didn't take a few of them with me.

U-Haul "local" moves (which is what you're describing) are paid by the day plus miles.

$50/day plus $1.20/mile. So assuming eight days - tight, but doable - it comes to $7,540.

Conversely, doing the same move from Atlanta would cost $40/day and $0.99/mile - or a total of $6,260. It is not quite enough cheaper to fly out and do it that way, assuming zero time cost.
