Kevin McCarthy Will Leave Congress "At the End of the Year"

Not at the end of the current Congress, which extends into January. But at the end of the year.

This will leave us with only a 1 member majority for a period.

Former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., is resigning from Congress early and will not run for reelection next year, punctuating a historic Capitol Hill career after 15 rounds of voting to become speaker in January and getting ousted 10 months later by a conservative rebellion.

"I have decided to depart the House at the end of this year to serve America in new ways. I know my work is only getting started," McCarthy said in an op-ed in The Wall Street Journal.

Though McCarthy's next steps are uncertain, he has promised to stay involved in Republican politics. The California Republican declined to make another bid for the gavel after being removed as speaker in October.

Marjorie Taylor Greene supported McCarthy like she was possessed, likely just because McCarthy had not sided with moderate/Establishment GOPers who wanted to discipline her. She's still raging about deposing McCarthy.

But she makes a point: the Republicans who just voted to oust Santos should have done some simple arithmetic before doing so.

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene

Follow

Well..

Now in 2024, we will have a 1 seat majority in the House of Representatives.

Congratulations Freedom Caucus for one and 105 Rep who expel our own for the other.

I can assure you Republican voters didn't give us the majority to crash the ship.

Hopefully no one dies.

Hopefully McCarthy will get a high-paying job as a lobbyist which will allow him to move out of Frank Luntz's couch.

Gaetz, on the other hand, continues taunting McCarthy, tweeting "McLeavin'." Maybe he should consider what would happen if McCarthy left now instead of at the end of December. Maybe a little grace in victory would be prudent.

I'm just really getting tired of people we elect into positions of responsibility who just want to use their jobs as Congressmen as an entree to the job they really want, Social Media Influencer.

I know Matt Gaetz has his defenders. Let me give you the take from the other side: There are certain people who, like the Kardashians, are always making demands on our attention, and frequently have very little to contribute. Their bids for attention turn out to be nothing but bids for attention. Again, like the Kardashians.

Now if you really like the Kardashians, you might like when they demand your attention.

If you are meh on them, you begin to hate them. You begin to really get tired of their attention-whoring antics. Public figures should worry when the amount of attention they actually deserve gets greatly outpaced by the amount of attention they demand.

This is why I just don't cover Trump unless absolutely required to; he's just exhausted me. I cannot put up with the drama and bluster and constant demands on my attention.

I think a lot of people have similarly reached the limits of their Trump endurance.

I think Trump is benefiting from being relatively low-profile, compared to his previous media omnipresence. Getting banned from most social media and propaganda legacy media has inadvertently helped him. But he may lose some of that tolerance when he's back in the media more often.

24 So, McCarthy (with his people) ousting Santos and then quitting is Gaetz's fault?

Yeah, Gaetz did us a HUGE favor. If we're gonna throw the House in 2024 like we did in elections past, at least this time, the seats being thrown are the Uniparty ones, and not the real Repub ones...it's better to have the person in charge actually NOT be Uniparty...and that's finally who we have in Johnson.

He may not be able to do anything b/c he's a minority leader, but he also won't let things get done that continue to stab us in the back over and over and over again.

Thank you, Gaetz. We needed a light shone on the House, and we finally got one...

Even if we have to punch ourselves in the balls to hold our failures accountable, it beats the normal status quo of letting THEM kick us in the balls, from behind, with no ramifications.

This is entirely the fault of the GOP leadership, not the small group of Reps holding them accountable to the will of the base.

And?

I'm not being contrary for it's own sake. What's the point of an impeachment inquiry? From my read, the *only* thing such an inquiry could do is force some of the things that the press ignores into the coverage cycle for a brief period, at least partly offset by the surge of "OMG OUR DEMOCRACY" anti-Republican fear reporting. The House almost certainly will not impeach him and the Senate absolutely will not convict him even if the House ends up going the other way.

What is the point? The House has real power it *could* use, but it chooses not to do so. That choice is the reason why McCarthy got fired in the first place. How does a meaningless impeachment process move the ball? What is lost by losing the opportunity?

And yet, one of the primary reasons Johnson got kudos was because he started releasing the Jan 6 tapes. The focus (IMO) would be to tear through them and identify FBI agents and informants instigating most of the activities and actions. BUT, what does Johnson do? He requires faces to be blurred before release to public. And, all they needed was one single FBI agent identified and Christopher Wray's adamant denial of involvement to Rep. Clay Higgins under oath is fair game for contempt charges.

Ace has a reasonable position, as I see it- Trump is exhausting, he "lost" in 2020, there's a good chance he'll perform worse in 2024 (presidential losers rarely come back successfully), and comparing DeSantis' record in Florida to Trump’s in DC clearly shows DeSantis has the more conservative credentials.

Trump, however, has energized and motivated a large chunk of voters that are exclusively loyal to him. He successfully played the Left and GOP Establishment to get elected initially, which was no small feat, and increased his votes in 2020 by something like 18%, which is unheard of (especially with a "loss").

I can understand being frustrated that the objectively better conservative is crowded out from even competing with an embarrassing clown like Trump...but that's the hand were dealt, and Trump will be the nominee unless the Left and GOPe conspire to deny him the nomination...which is an even greater threat.

LOL. Yup. This is one of my problems with the "if not for the GOPe, there's no GOP at all" argument, which is what a lot of it boils down to. The cucks suck, but it's all about numbers and bodies in the house and whatnot.

It doesn't really matter to me. The GOPe does not represent me. It does not stop what I want stopped, nor does it advance what I want advanced. It has a damn near perfect 0.000 batting average. There are occasional confounding events, of course, but they're fairly rare. There is another party in Washington that has that same average. There is a rhetorical difference between them, but not much of an actual difference.

That isn't the argument in the slightest. McCarthy promised as a condition to his elevation to Speaker to return to regular order.

He didn't. He waited to start then slow-walked it, did little if anything to advance the bills, then recessed the House as the deadline approached. That isn't failing to "unilaterally fix the government," that's simple refusal to do what he promised as a condition of getting the job.

Whatever politics (in the Clausewitzian sense) there is left to be done anymore has precious little to do with politicians. Which ass is in which chair makes no difference, because it's an entirely different category of asses that make the decisions and perform the actions that affect anyone's daily life. The battle isn't between blue ties and red ties, and they all feed at the same trough that gets filled by the latter category of asses anyway, so there's no point getting invested in them directly. Whatever victory there is to be won likely won't be televised. Business, communities, individuals, etc. gradually becoming "ungovernable", the bombastic decrees from the swamp becoming increasingly irrelevant to actual daily life... that's where my hope lies. No politician can deliver that in Current Year, even if they wanted to.

Oh yes, you absolutely can. It requires balls and leadership, which the GOP does not have.

Create your budgets, ram through the House, send them to the Senate and then recess and go home. The Senate can pass them and the President can sign them, or they - *they* and not you - can shut the government down. What the Senate does with them, or what the President does with them, is not the House's problem. They control the purse.

Social media where news is discussed and where election matters involving that news are discussed, and those elections won and lost.

Pearl Harbor level news, and no one cares. No elections can be even remotely legitimate so long as those actions are occurring.

361 I blame Trump exhaustion on the media. It was the media making a big drama about everything Trump did. I'm not going to blame one person for what other people, playing political games, decide to do to try to associate drama and discomfort and chaos with him.

Trump was not the circus; the media was the circus. They were trying to distract him, hobble him, and make him odious. Plus, they are unstable, hysterical, stubbornly ignorant idiots. I refuse to have my perceptions manipulated like that by people like that.

364 I do not understand why Republicans cannot be smart about the use of power. Republicans had control of the House, and they let their minor differences wither their control away until it has become inconsequential. In each degradation, Republicans become willing to betray their constituencies for their own egos.
Kevin McCarthy signed up for a two year gig. He needs to stay in office for two years. The rest of the Republicans should stop expelling Republicans the Democrats do not like. ++++
I'll take a crack at it.

Per the COA-P (Compendium of Acronyms, Political), "LGF" expands to "Low-Grade Food." LGF is not usually literally low-grade food, but rather refers to the nature of Washington politics as being a lot like the institutional foodstuffs served in venues like prisons. It masquerades as, for example, "steak and potatoes" but is really a foul-tasting and foul-smelling slurry that seldom resembles its namesake.

American national politics resemble this "LGF" in that it presents itself as serious work done by august bodies, but is in actuality a bunch of psychopaths and retards drooling all over the furniture.

This frames the first time I saw the facade party for what they were.

Republicans have to go to the middle to bring in the vote. Trump social politics were MOR almost more than any candidate previous to him.

And another reason is to bring in more of the minority vote. And Trump brings in the minority vote to the extent that nobody has seen from this other line of also-rans.

But the facade party didn't want Trump a lot more than I didn't want Trump.

And I started to see the fix.

464 The other thing is at my best back then and still now when I put on my dancing shoes my military historical analysis was top notch, and I have always understood and worked intermittently in information warfare theory.

The democrat party integrated PAO, PSYOPS, and Civil Affairs types into an integrated planning committee to some degree.

I'd bet my life on it, so while the majority of the force did lean right in the LGF era the donks did a better job actually utilizing what was won with blood overseas and took to treating US politics as essentially a foreign COIN influence operation including black PR to control the churn of the news cycle.

I will be very happy once I finally leave the reservation and quit caring....made easier still because once the blackpillers succeed in killing any opposition the US military will be manned by illegal aliens to a large degree in the combat arms.

That will change a lot.

Thanks and fuck you Dick Durbin.
