Economists Predict Recession in 2024; Oil Likely to Hit $100 Per Barrel Again

Wouldn't it be nice if we were producing our own oil, like we did for four years before this usurper was placed in the White House by a criminal conspiracy to defraud the United States of a valid election?

Oil prices are expected to rise in the new year after some OPEC+ oil producers voluntarily pledged to cut output.

The oil cartel on Thursday released a statement that did not formally endorse production cuts, but individual countries announced voluntary reductions totaling 2.2 million barrels per day for the first quarter of 2024.

Leading the cuts is OPEC kingpin and largest member Saudi Arabia. Riyadh agreed to extend its voluntary production cut of 1 million barrels per day -- which has been in place since July -- until the end of the first quarter of 2024. Russia said it will cut supply by 300,000 barrels per day of crude and 200,000 barrels per day of petroleum products over the same period.

Oh, Saudi Arabia is cutting production again? I guess maybe you shouldn't publicly accuse the Crown Prince of a major oil-producing ally of murder, especially if you also plan on restricting US oil production at the same time.

Meanwhile -- and I doubt that economists have factored this just-announced production cut into their forecasts -- economists say the economy will slow in 2024, and that the odds of a recession are 50/50.

"The NABE [National Association of Business Economics] Outlook Survey Panel anticipates stronger U.S. economic growth projections for 2023 than in the October Outlook survey, but panelists expect growth to slow to 1% between the fourth quarter of 2023 and the fourth quarter of 2024," said NABE President Ellen Zentner, chief U.S. economist at Morgan Stanley, in the group's latest survey.

U.S. GDP is expected to slow to 1.2% in the fourth quarter as tracked by the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta's GDP Now, which was updated on Dec. 1, citing a slowdown in construction spending and manufacturing.

1% growth! That's terrible. And of course they're also saying that we'll have a recession, two quarters of negative growth, in addition.

atlantafedprojection.jpg

The old saying is that the public's sentiments about the economy are formed, what, nine months before an election?

A few months ago Biden attempted to affirmatively run on his miserable, immiserating economy, instead of running away from it. He really thought that his media allies still had the public's confidence enough that they could brainwash citizens into believing Biden's economy was some kind of miracle.

Well, that did not work. And now House Democrats announce that they will not be joining Roomba Joe in his suicide mission of saying "If you love this economy, vote for me!"

This is Axios, which is Politico for the Developmentally Delayed. And I can't believe I just inadvertently suggested that Politico is not for the Developmentally Delayed.

House Democrats have rejected the White House's months-long campaign to sell the term "Bidenomics."

Why it matters: Democrats are going into the 2024 election divided on how to communicate about the economy at a time when most voters are dissatisfied with it.

What's happening: House Democratic leadership stopped pushing the term months ago.

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee and House Majority PAC, two key fundraising arms, are also avoiding it on social media and press releases, as polling indicates the tagline is ineffective.

In a meeting this past summer to discuss economic messaging strategy, House Democrats decided to stick with "People Over Politics" rather than "Bidenomics," one senior Democratic leadership aide told Axios.

Zoom in: The "Bidenomics" catchphrase seemed to present a host of issues, according to Democratic sources.

The term was seen as tone-deaf to voters still struggling economically and also invoked a president with lackluster polling numbers.

One Democratic strategist said the biggest problem wasn't using "Biden," but that the term was too philosophical and required too much explanation.

This is always their excuse -- their claims are "too complicated" for the stupid American public to understand.

No. The truth is pretty easy to understand, especially in cases like this. People know they have less wealth than they did before. That's easy to understand.

The lie -- that they're actually wealthier than they were before -- is "too philosophical and complicated" because it requires accepting a host of false premises to accept. False premises like "you're not unemployed, you're funemployed" or "inflation is really Winflation."

people are noticing, and the usual "corporate greed" deflections aren't working, even on leftwing social media

84 If you guys have a way of reading the Kagan article in the WaPo without giving Bezos any money or clicks - you should check it out. It is incredible. It reads like a rationalization and plea to the CIA to assassinate Trump, and it also reads like a campaign ad for Trump. And the lack of self awareness on Kagan's part is also amazing - asking things like - what happens when a regime targets its political opponents? How will the public react?! It verges on parody at times. But it is dangerous - it shows how desperate the left and the institutionalists will get. Pretty scary

This is another reason why the elite doesn't care as much about inflation, wages, or other similar indicators. They value their wealth by their assets. Those assets include equity portfolios. Since those portfolios are doing very well, to them that means they are doing very well.

132 In my neck of the peoples socialistic democratics republics of northern virginia, I am wondering how residential real estate prices are holding steady?

The short answer is that sales are way down, because nobody is buying or selling. Inventory is very short. People with homes can't afford to move, or don't want to go from a 3% mortgage to an 8% one. Also, this area tends to be maximum price sticky. People are assuming that prices will eventually start back up, so they're waiting. It can take a year or two, or more, for people to give up and sell at current prices.

Buyers are looking at 8% mortgages, when for many people, all they've known was < 4%. They're waiting for rates to drop again.

Posted by: Archimedes at December 05, 2023 02:39 PM (I/Qkd)

133 Bidenomics mostly comes down to Core CPI.

Hunty's up to his brilliant nutsack in blow and hookers, and I'm rounding it out with the pralines and mint chips, jack. America's never done better when it comes to economic drivers like Crack, Prostitutes, and Ice Cream, and you can take that to the Chinese bank, fat.

We haven't been flush like this since I founded the World's Fair in London back in '51. It was free-base back then, and we called 'em doxies, but the ice cream was the same as it's ever been, since my dad Benjamin Franklin invented it. Democrats have always churned when the people have spoken.

Posted by: Brandon at December 05, 2023 02:39 PM (0FoWg)

134 I think a recession is extremely likely next year, if not starting already. Interest rates are doing what they do. There is a staggering amount of uneconomic activity going on for the past 20 years (30, depending on how you count) on the back of interest rate repression. The air is going to come out because rates make its continuation untenable.

This continues until the source of inflation - the deficit - is cut out.

Someone should point this out to some of those asshats on some Sunday morning talk show and follow it with a question like 'what's gonna be different after the next election, assuming you guys are still in control?'

177 The United States is among at least 60 countries backing a pledge on Tuesday to cut cooling-related emissions by 2050, U.S. State Department officials said at the U.N. climate summit in Dubai.

The Global Cooling Pledge would mark the world's first collective focus on energy emissions from the cooling sector. It calls for countries to reduce by 2050 their cooling-related emissions by at least 68% compared to 2022 levels.

It's a tough task, given the cooling industry is only expected to grow as temperatures continue to climb.

With installed cooling capacity set to triple by 2050, cooling emissions are expected to surge to between 4.4 billion and 6.1 billion metric tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent by 2050, according to a report published on Tuesday by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). That would equal one-tenth of expected global emissions, the report said, and would strain electric grids.

More solar! Residential and commercial building cooling emissions can be reduced easily with more solar and possibly battery backup. I don't know enough to work out an obvious solution for industrial cooling emissions reduction beyond "more solar"!

181 The stock market is not reflective of the economy as a whole, and it will come down - possibly by a lot.

You may have noticed that a lot of bellwether companies are seeing lower profits despite higher prices. Unlike Biden's assertions of price-gouging, a lot of enterprises are seeing margin compression. Prices are going up, but not enough to fully offset the rising costs of inputs. This will be squeezed out in job losses (especially uneconomic jobs like diversity officers and coordinators and whatnot) but stocks will comes down, too. Earnings are down, and so will prices be, eventually. Not to mention the erosion in earnings due to higher costs of money (interest) and erosion in prices as things like buyouts and other stock-based trading also get more expensive for the same reason.

Stocks will hold up better than some asset classes because they can also be a way to beat inflation and, as BlackOrchid pointed out, the "close to money" thing. But it isn't invincible and will come down and possibly by a lot. The best possible outcome is sideways movement (essentially, stagnation of prices).

We need to get back to talking about capital gains taxes?

I do recall Trump having some broadly popular positions before Covid took over. But the GOP hates those positions as much as Democrats.

201 BLS (Bullshit Liars Service) has so far adjusted every single number in the rear view mirror to worse then originally published. But people know the reality. They aren't reading the print, they are living it. Core inflation has probably peaked, but the question is how fast will it get to the Fed target. We shall see what happens when it comes time to raise or hold the rates again. Irrespective I see a general malaise on the horizon. We are already technically in a recession. Consumer spending has stabilized by there is a lot of credit out there and Commercial Real Estate is blowing up. Add to that a lot of the Blue States are running out of money and will probably raise taxes again. With energy prices high, I don't see any drop in prices coming soon and with consumers tapped out, that means things probably won't get better in 2024.

If you've had a minivan that's actually been used as a minivan, 8 years is when things are breaking down and the interior is trashed. We have a 2007 that we're looking at having to replace. If we're spending $10K, we'd expect to get a something that's not over a decade old, especially a Mazda that's over a decade old.

That used to not be a problem.

209 Supply is really low in most areas, helping costs stay up.

Most sales these days are Cash sales. Upwards of 60% or so...

I would not be buying a home with anything more than I could afford in a cash payment, in this environment.

Depends on market, but real estate prices are being shored up by extremely small inventory (tight supply). With mortgage money at *least* five points higher than it was three years ago, the prices can't be supported by earnings in a lot of markets anymore. Most people don't buy houses, they buy a payment. If your payment capacity is $2,000, it's $2,000. If rates go up, that payment buys "less house."

Since we haven't seen much "forced selling" where the owner *must* sell (job loss, divorce, mandatory relocation, layoff and underemployment, etc.), inventories have collapsed instead and that provides price support. Nothing is on the market, so prices remain high because supply is constrained by the choice of the owners who know they're stuck if they sell.

When forced selling starts (likely coincident with major layoff activity), look out below.

Well, there's your category error right there. Cars last a lot longer than they used to do. Engines last longer, bodies don't rust out as fast. Styling doesn't change as fast, either. So a 2015 car is still a "late-model used car" and retains some value. Beaters start around 15 years old now. There is still plenty or reliable transportation for moderate dollars in the 15 to 20 year age range.

267 More solar! Residential and commercial building cooling emissions can be reduced easily with more solar and possibly battery backup. I don't know enough to work out an obvious solution for industrial cooling emissions reduction beyond "more solar"!

You want to reduce cooling-related emissions? Re-permit the banned refrigerants R12 and R22, which are more thermodynamically efficient than their lame substitutes, and reduce the fuel consumption needed to power the cooling units.

But it's very useful for explaining how Democraps suddenly and inexplicably crush it at the ballot box. Rather than admit they stole the election, Dems instead pretend there was this huge swath of new Democrap voters who wouldn't otherwise have voted, but for abortion. It's bullshit.

Houses are selling everywhere. Even during the worst housing recessions there are houses sold. What matters is relative to last year or two years ago. How much is selling? And how long does it take for the median sale? And the answer in the vast majority of markets is less is sold now than a year ago and time in the market is longer.

Because goodness knows that the early 2000s Chrysler and Dodges that didn't have any rear windows that opened/vented and no air vents for the back either are totally reliable and great replacements for a freaking Sienna.

Sure. Go street-by-street (or zip code by zip code) and there will be variance. There is always is. And rates dropping will bring in more buyers and support higher prices - but rates *aren't* dropping. That's my point. Rising rates make it much, much harder to support current price levels and will also have consequences on big corporate property portfolios (those "all-cash offers from Company X" are backed by credit elsewhere).

303 Nearly half (46%) of all Americans 18-29 in the survey, and 56% of registered voters, said they will "definitely" vote if there is an abortion referendum on their state ballots next fall. Among those voters, the pro-abortion rights side dominates, with 64% of those calling themselves "pro-choice" saying they would vote in that case, and 34% of young voters who describe themselves as "pro-life" saying they would definitely vote under those circumstances.

Further, 22% of young voters who aren't committed to voting for president next year nonetheless say they would definitely vote on a state abortion referendum, an opportunity for candidates who would then need only convince those voters to make a choice for president while they were already filling out a ballot. Even among those who say they will "definitely not" vote for president in 2024 say they would show up if an abortion referendum is also on the ballot.

338 I got my house because my realtor showed me it before it was technically on the market. When I was moving in last year, a mom and daughter pulled up to the truck I was unloading. "Are you moving, is this on the market yet," and so on. You have to be like a house-hunting alpha predator to get anything, even in a relative backwater like this.

However... whether you have one or not, if you aren't of child-bearing age, or otherwise are unable to have a child, you don't get to vote either.

I'm sure that's true, but I don't always fault these guys. Some of them WANT to be fathers, and the system won't allow them to do so. Either because mom flushed the child, or she had it, didn't tell him, and named him a decade later. So he's on the hook for 10 years, plus penalties.

When I inherited the folks' place in Orlando, FL, I sold it by working with a realtor from Redfin. 1% fee on their end, but alas, the buyer's realtor wants (as always) their full 3%.

Still though, the service rendered was every bit as thorough and professional as any "full commission" realtor, and without a lot of the pretentious foo-foo that attends such performance actors.

We did *no* crap such as refinishing, painting or staging. Simply had an estate sale, then a charity emptied out the house and left it "broom clean" for showings. I ended up having to replace the ancient HVAC, but I "fixed up" nothing else. Successful offer on the 3rd showing, proceeded to closing with nary a speed bump along the way.

389 Climaphobes are all in for killing folks. Lots of 'em.

An efficient way to accomplish this would be to cause massive inflation and scarcity.

How to accomplish this? 1) Flood the economy with money, 2) Flood the economy with non-productive consumers and 3) Greatly restrict or even halt economic growth to restrict the investments needed to fill the demand for goods created by 1) and 2).

But how to do this?

Easy. Blow interest rates sky high to make raising long term capital damn near impossible and destroy the possibility for any reasonable ROI. You can even use the rapidly rising inflation print as cover: Just blame the inflation on Consumers That Just Spend Too Much Money.

That said, the FED is ALL IN on this charade. Anyone that thinks otherwise is completely naive.

You'll see the 30 Year Treasury north of 7% before inauguration day 2025. If a conservative gets elected (by accident) you'll likely see it much higher. In fact, it's a perfect response to any kind of electoral revolt.

Want To Know More? Look at the weekly chart of the 30 year. You'll something rarer than hen's teeth: an impulse wave.

Ironically, it started on March 23, 2020.

Prepare accordingly.
