Ace of Spades Pet Thread, December 9

Good afternoon and welcome to the almost world famous Ace of Spades Pet Thread. Thanks for stopping by. Kick back and enjoy the world of animals.

Would you like a treat?

Let's relax a little with the animals and leave the world of politics and current events outside today.

* * *

Most Intelligent Dogs?

Fun read even though it is full of lies, and in spite of the ads, because the French Bulldog is not mentioned at all!

Do you agree?

My Calico

maggie t. Calico.jpg

Maggie, next to the hole she once fell into

This is a goofy song about a goofy cat. (The song is goofy because it has no meter, only half the lines rhyme, etc.; it's just a little something a guy is humming to himself.) It makes two points: (1) she's very fat; (2) she's the love of the narrator's life.

Whom can I turn to

When my spirits are low?

My only mistress,

My calico!

Click the line to see and hear the whole thing!

I like the poetry. The music is no Bohemian Catsody, thank goodness. Love is evident in this offering of devotion.

Hi there,

if I did this right you should find attached photos of Sammy (born Samson) who is one year old this month (November) and a mix of black Labrador retriever and Cane Corso. We think/fear he has a little bit more to grow, but he is already 75+lbs . . . and we love him to death of course!

We adopted him from-a shelter at age 3 months. He loves meeting people and other pets especially more retrievers and he absolutely adores chasing balls and chewing bully sticks. The squirrels however are at great risk....

Thanks for what you do,
Vox Clamantis

He has a lot of personality! And he sounds big!

Well, normally we would include so many photos from one household, but the contrasts here are extraordinary:

Hey K.T.

Occasional commenter, but mostly lurk. I've had several Great Danes and cats over the years. The mostly white dane is Mule, and the blue one is Hogan. The cat is Joey. The pic with two cats includes Joey's mom, Lela.

Jay

Wow! There are some dramatic photos there. The dogs are dramatic on their own. And it's unusual to see such big dogs with such little cats! There is some kitty personality coming through, too!

1 Sammy!

Today on way to market, another bum with shopping cart.
But... his dog, a pit mix off the leash, approached me.
She was sweet! One of the few dogs that don't think bicycles are related to mailmen. All tail wags and kisses! She somehow knew my hand needed licking.

3 The photo of the kitten looking up at the Great Dane is priceless. Not sure if the kitten thinks it's too big to be real or is the best (and safest) cuddle buddy in the world.

4 From the description of Australian Cattle Dogs:

To put it another way, if you don't give these dogs something productive to do, they'll find something to do with their time—something you probably won't appreciate.

Quoted for truth.

Wonderful dogs. But hell on wheels.

7 That list of the smartest dogs is crap. Poodles at number two instead of the very top? Heresy and lies!!

And no mention of Bichons. Precious is obviously able to learn whatever she wants (if it suits her grand plan). And she has proven adept at training humans. At least two of them.

9 Great pics of the pet morons.
I have an honest question that is pet related.
I ask here because this is the best place for both dating and medical advice on the innerwebs.

Why, are pugs?
Some friends have a 9 month old pug, blacker coat than my heart. Cute as all get out but impossible to take a decent photo because his coat absorbs light.

Why were pugs bred? Do they serve another purpose than being sweet and adorable?
Thanks in advance

And then your list goes to 17. Clearly headline writers are not on the list.

Nor are beagles, as it should be. #1 in noses, somewhere in the hundreds in intelligence.

18 Afternoon, all! Kiera looks a little bit in the markings like Miss Linda's late Angelique D. Siberian, the one who walked up to me in a parking lot and jumped into my car. And the little tri-color kitten with the Great Dane is a fantastic shot.

21 Yay pet thread! Great looking Moronimals.

Just emailed some pix. Why aren't they in here? Yok yok you.

Daisy dog has been staying with her cousins while MiladyJo gets her feet back post-hip fix. Ony cat has been extra vocal and demanding to make up for her.

22 My own Killer Kittens From Outer Space are thriving. Little Dagny jumped on the bed while I was napping and was stretched out next to me when I woke up. Big black Stirling has settled himself on the back of the couch and isn't bothering with humans.

My apartment "management" is going to do a unit inspection this Tuesday, going into all the apartments to inspect. They'll have loads of fun with the condition of mine among others. Either the cats will have to go to Linda's, or she'll have to spend most of the day over here while I'm at work.

Stirling will probably hide when the strange people come. I'm not sure what Dagny will do.

It's something that had never occurred to me since this is the first one I've ever met. They just seem so odd.

25 Come to think of it: Monday will be eighteen months since I drove all the way to Vicksburg to adopt Stirling. Dagny's 1.5 year marker comes up in early March, a week or so before Stirling's (supposed) second birthday. We know Dagny's actual birthdate, but we reckon that the black cat was three months old on June 11, so March 11, we say, is his birthday.

None of these calculations impress the cats, of course. It's strictly a hooman thing.

27 It took several months but Precious is finally comfortable being on my lap. Apparently her original owner didn't want that and she is too short to jump up on furniture. But she has decided that when I'm in the recliner my legs make a perfectly acceptable napping spot. It also puts her in the perfect position for ear skritches. And she doesn't mind when I read while she is sleeping.

Magic, my new tom, got really sick, intermittent fevers and lassitude for nearly 3 weeks after his booster, and I was surprised, the other cats barely noticed it/

34 The weather forecast is calling for some serious rain for the next day or two, possibly with thunderstorms. Very unusual for December. This could present a challenge. Precious does not mind rain and is too deaf to be bothered by thunder. But puddles are a work of the devil. Apparently wet paws do not suit her sense of feminine delicacy.

Posted by: JTB at December 09, 2023 04:46 PM (7EjX1)

35 Hey, those are some terrific pets! Very funny photo up top. I like dogs but have a special fondness for what I call Basic Black dogs. The Great Dane, I always wonder how difficult they are to keep, feed, etc. A daunting task, I imagine.
My 14 year old cat thinks he owns the recliner chair and will howl in protest when I claim it. Then I put him on my lap and he calms right down. This is prime lap kitty weather we're having right now.

My lady cat follows around the workers, sniffs in their bags and watches them work. She's even run up a step ladder into the attic when they are on break to see what they are doing.

I remember a fantasy story that hinged on Pekinese pugs being able to see and drive off Demons.

40 Well Bailey is still hanging in there. At 13 yrs, 8 months she has lived a bit over the expected lifetime for a big lab.

She wasn't eating much and puking everything for 3-4 days, we thought she was a goner. Now over the last few days she is eating and much more active.

Tough call ahead as she has dementia and hip issues, we have to push her a bit up the stairs. But she enjoys life most of the time, now is more playful. Next week we will have a consult w/ the vet.

To be honest most mornings when I wake up if she is stone cold quiet I hope she has died. That would be natural, peaceful and easier. Time will tell.
