THE MORNING RANT: Conservative, Inc. and The Conservative Case for Removing Statues of Our Founding Fathers

The statue of Thomas Jefferson was just removed from New York’s City Hall. This was inevitable, with America’s left now comfortable in its spitting hatred of the United States’ heritage.

“Thomas Jefferson statue removed from City Hall after 187 years” [NY Post – 11/23/2021]

Keri Butler, executive director of the Public Design Commission that voted to banish the statue, at first tried to block the press from witnessing its removal. Butler relented after members of the mayor’s office and City Council intervened.
The commission also attempted to vote on the statue’s removal without a public hearing on the controversial move until The Post revealed the plan.

This was also enabled by the polite conservatives of Conservative, Inc. who cheered on the initial rounds of statue removal a couple years ago.

Rando Jefferson statue NYC.JPG

Rich Lowry of National Review was a pom-pom waving fanboy of the left’s statue removal agenda in 2020.

National Review - Lowry - Statues.JPG

Secession was a traitorous act that threatened to destroy the American nation, and the South’s leaders don’t deserve to be given a place of honor.

Lowry was also trying to get a dig in at Trump.

For his part, President Donald Trump has been a steadfast defender of the statues and other forms of recognition of the Confederacy. He has come out in favor of preserving the names of military bases named after Confederate generals and pointedly said that we should build on our heritage rather than tear it down.

Conservatives tend to think the same way. They reflexively oppose politically correct campaigns to destroy anything giving offense. They fear where the slippery slope of woke iconoclasm will lead — first it’s Jefferson Davis, ultimately George Washington.

We conservatives feared the slippery slope because we knew it was inevitable. To be fair, I suspect that Mr. Lowry also knew it was inevitable that statues of Washington, Jefferson, and Lincoln would be torn down soon thereafter. His role in the faux-conservative movement is to ease conservatives into polite surrender to the left’s agenda.

Rando Lowry.JPG

There is nothing before 2008 (Obama’s election) that the left doesn’t despise about this country. It’s not stopping with monuments of the founding fathers either. The Flag, the National Anthem, patriotism, and the Constitution (including the Bill of Rights) will all be targeted by the left, and there will be plenty of surrender-cons like Rich Lowry to explain the conservative case for each incremental erosion of our heritage, our liberty, and our national identity.

If you have a spot of history and culture in your educational background, you know where this leads.

After conquering, the first thing the invaders (or revolutionaries) do is tear down the statues and symbols. When the USSR failed, the statues of Stalin and Lenin came down toot sweet. When we conquered Iraq, the statues of Hussein came down promptly. When the Muslims - the closest in spirit to the contemporary Left - take over, they raze *every* cultural artifact within reach.

We've been conquered, and so the statues are coming down. ConInc knows it, they're just a version of the Vichy regime.

Burning the flag, taking down statues, graffiti on monuments, all that is one thing, but our oath is to support and defend the Constitution. So, when the lefties start spiting on, trampling on, and burning copies of the Constitution, what will you do?

23 The Charlottesville fiasco (PsyOp to establish the "conservatives are white supremacists" meme) attracted a lot of the general public who thought it was about conserving the RE Lee stature. That was transformed into KKK versus America by the media, though only the "save the statue" group had a permit to meet, not the Antifa goons.

RE Lee in Lee Circle in New Orleans was also a key removal, hated by much of New Orleans. I don't think they melted that one down though.

25 It's disgusting that so many on the "Right" (like the idiots at NR) pretended to accept what the MSM was saying and never said what the statue removal was really about. It wasn't about "racism" or "white supremacy" or even the Confederacy - it was about destroying the Consensus about the aftermath of the Civil War that had been in place for 140 years. And that was the idea that both sides fought hard for what they believed, one side won, one side lost, and the best way forward as a nation was to re-integrate and accept all the blood spilled as the full price to be paid.

It was viciously manipulative and wicked to try and refight the aftermath of a war that had been over for 140 years.

Secession occurred before they were governed by not-Democrats. Their declarations of causes centered around slavery.

There aren't oither immediate grievances to point to at the onset of the war because the Democrats had been the dominant party of the country, with the Whigs defunct and the Rs a new party on the block.

65 At my job, our "Christmas" tree in the front lobby of the hospital this year is a 6' fake birch tree that is lighted. It isn't called a Christmas tree, or even angel tree...just a giving tree. Names of needy Veterans kids are placed on the tree every year with their Christmas wish for a toy or clothes. Every year employees, including myself, will take a name or several and buy the wished for gifts for the kids and then are distributed. This is the first year that it isn't an actual Christmas tree.

Directly across from this fake birch is an actual Christmas tree beautifully decorated in red, white, and blue with American flags at the top and was set up by the local VFW. They were instructed to put a sign by the tree saying that this was donated by the VFW. I guess so the VA doesn't have to take responsibility for this Christian holiday tree.

This makes me sick. Sick enough that it would be a shame if the local press got wind of this.

when you remove a statue, you are saying 'that part of history never happened'

we can't deny our history- we should examine it and learn from it, and carry on

not pretending that taking down a statue changes the historical record

The Four Olds is exactly right. The modern "woke" (postmodern, 'cultural marxist,' etc.) shit on the Left is pure Maoism.

For those who don't know, it was a slogan of the Cultural Revolution in Red China. The Four Olds were Old Ideas, Old Culture, Old Customs, and Old Habits. They were, of course, to be replaced by the Four News - new customs, new culture, new habits, new ideas.

Anything old - that is, anything pre-socialist - had to be destroyed and replaced. The "culture war" in China became a war of naked conquest by the Party against the people.

Your statement that "slavery isn't the only reason" misleads by suggesting some equality in the other things. If slavery wasn't under threat, there's no secession or war.

It is the driving reason, the other stuff amounted to petty squabbling as far as the politicians were concerned.

Your original argument about government overreach makes no sense at all, aside from the Fugitive Slave Law the federal government wasn't particularly invasive.

169 32 Let's not forget the "conservative choice of GOPe" Nikkiii Haley was the first to embolden them.

Oh, all the racial healing and goodwill toward all, with forgiveness and tolerance for all that she delivered as promised by removing the Confederate flag from the state Capitol!

That was all they wanted and no more, just removing that newly-discovered symbol of hate.
Posted by: People's Hippo Voice - Personality Commentator at December 01, 2023 11:07 AM (TzW+Y)

THIS.

This is my first - and main - problem with Haley. As a black guy who lives in CT, the Confederate flag meant nothing to me; heck, as a youth I saw the Dukes of Hazzard and laughed along with the rest of America. I thought we moved past the Civil War.

However, if SC wanted to get rid of the flag, they had the right to do that under a regular, deliberative legislative process. That never happened. Blacks moved to the South in droves anyway. Instead, Haley panicked at the first opportunity and rode a wave of emotion to get rid of it, simply to score political points. You can draw a straight line between her folding on that issue and the Summer Of Love in 2020 a few short years after Emmanuel.

Posted by: I used to have a different nic at December 01, 2023 11:25 AM (1Z8zZ)

Well let's consider the two alternatives

1. Southern victory and a series of wars leading to eventual annexation of the North and more enduring slavery
2. Enduring and periodic conflict between two countries(this is very ugly and high casualty stuff in a region)
3. Slower Northern victory with more antagonism and death

Seems to have turned out ok. Could've been a shorter war, but certainly not the most painful way to have a resolution.

It WAS about slavery for some Northerners. It was about national unity for many more. Breaking up a strong and growing nation into two smaller, weaker nations was opposed by a lot of people. And, don't kid yourself, opposition to the EXANSION of slavery was absolutely a primary driver of the Civil War 1.

189 The Longstreet remembrance was good. Attached is this comment: "Confederate Lieutenant General James Longstreet is one of the most controversial figures of the American Civil War. His political views after the war turned a lot of his former comrades against him."

The situation is even more interesting than that; in the 25 years after the War ended, the former commanders put a lot of effort into putting out memoirs and stories of what happened, trying to both take credit for themselves and deflect blame for any disasters. As a part of that, the dissension and hate inside the surviving officer corps of each side become intense, while at the same time many ex-Federal officers became personal friends with the Confederate officers they had opposed on the battlefield, and vice versa.

And when you read them, you find the primary reason they give is slavery.

It's not complicated. the Southern gentry believed they were slowly losing the political battle on slavery, though Lincoln's victory did not present an immediate threat.

As they viewed slavery to be essential to their wealth and status, they went to war over the issue.

The Mexican-American war was to expand slavery. They wanted to invade Cuba to expand slavery.

It's not exactly a hidden motive.

221 Robert E. Lee Doesn’t Deserve a Statue, But Thomas Jefferson Does. Lee was no hero. by MONA CHAREN OCTOBER 20, 2021

In New York City, a statue of Thomas Jefferson has graced the City Council chamber for 100 years. This week the Public Design Commission voted unanimously to remove it. “Jefferson embodies some of the most shameful parts of our country’s history,” explained Adrienne Adams, a councilwoman from Queens. As if on cue, TFG chimed in with a statement chiding the city for “evicting” [him]...

When iconoclasts topple Jefferson, they seem to validate the argument advanced by defenders of Confederate monuments that there is no escape from the slippery slope. “First they come for Nathan Bedford Forrest, and then for Robert E. Lee. Where does it end? Is Jefferson next? Is George Washington?”

Do we overlook Jefferson’s shameful private behavior? No, but we take him in full. His contribution to human liberty, despite his personal behavior, entitles him to a place of honor. There will always be an asterisk, but to say that statues honoring him “shouldn’t exist” as the New York City assemblyman did, is to dismiss the Declaration, the American anthem.

Do governments ever put their (DeepState) real intent into their "mission statements"? Or do they find a popular cause to get the public on their side?

The argument has been made that the tariffs benefitted the wealthy, and was a driving factor. Of course the wealthy Southern elites wanted/needed the slaves to keep their agricultural profits, but the tariffs put an "undue" burden on them.

Slavery could have been ended over some longer term (20 years?) without the death and ruination, but there were other forces at work (perhaps).

235 We conservatives feared the slippery slope because we knew it was inevitable.

You can always tell who the liars are on slippery slopes because their argument invariably is that it doesn't follow that "if x, then y," as if we are just debating formal logic, while ignoring the mountain of evidence that the people at the top of the slope intend to and are working toward pushing people down that slope. It's not that gay marriage simply had to lead to "bake the cake," it's that it was the plan all along. Cultural warriors are engaged in a war; the individual battles are not their objective.

The Ottomans eventually surpassed it (I think with the Sulimaniya) but them claiming the dome for Islam was very very significant. Former seat of the eastern church etc etc. but the visual of the dome is so dominant, and still standing, that to me it's really the symbol.

288 The Civil War was because Southern opinion leaders did not connect the end with the beginning. They let their states be dragged into 1) secession and 2) war by their most radical elements.

All this to preserve the Southern states' God-given right to grow cotton and rice in WY & MT.

299 I have thought a great deal about the real reaason the war was fought, considered slavery and economics. I used to have long discussions with my father about it, who was quite the Civil War historian. I haven't just read resources, I've read letters written by men of the time, not politicians or leaders, but ordinary soldiers.

And I've concluded that the answer is something our society cannot really conceive of now, not even those of us who consider ourselves conservative. It is because the men on both sides thought it right, proper, and fitting that they should volunteer to go die for their political beliefs - nothing more or less than that. Most of them didn't even hesitate, and although Death was not to be welcomed, they also did not fear it. That's why hundreds of thousands of them did it, on both sides.

and every last one of them would look down in disgust at the craven cowards we have all become today. Some psychopathic man wearing a dress shits in the middle of the street, and we're scared to even say boo. Every last one of them would have killed such a man on the spot.

300 These ends it endeavored to accomplish by a Federal Government, in which each State was recognized as an equal, and had separate control over its own institutions. The right of property in slaves was recognized by giving to free persons distinct political rights, by giving them the right to represent, and burthening them with direct taxes for three-fifths of their slaves; by authorizing the importation of slaves for twenty years; and by stipulating for the rendition of fugitives from labor.

301 We affirm that these ends for which this Government was instituted have been defeated, and the Government itself has been made destructive of them by the action of the non-slaveholding States. Those States have assume the right of deciding upon the propriety of our domestic institutions; and have denied the rights of property established in fifteen of the States and recognized by the Constitution; they have denounced as sinful the institution of slavery; they have permitted open establishment among them of societies, whose avowed object is to disturb the peace and to eloign the property of the citizens of other States. They have encouraged and assisted thousands of our slaves to leave their homes; and those who remain, have been incited by emissaries, books and pictures to servile insurrection.

304 This week, Judge Valeri Caproni of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York granted leave for Energy Policy Advocates (EPA) to file an amicus brief with that Court in City Of New York v. Exxon Mobil Corporation et al. The brief includes an appendix of over 100 pages of emails and memos sent to and from the New York Attorney General’s Office (NYAG), which were recently obtained by Government Accountability & Oversight (GAO). Most of these emails were recently released for the first time and following years of stonewalling. All of this reveals the Rockefeller Family Fund’s (RFF) instrumental role in originating the ever-expanding climate litigation campaign which began with the New York Attorney General’s November 2015 subpoena of ExxonMobil.

In a breathtaking read, the public now sees in the principals’ own words that the admitted objective is to obtain discovery for help with, and otherwise help move along, a national campaign of lawfare designed to coerce defendants “to the table” in support of unpopular national ‘climate’ (i.e., energy-constraint) policy.

Observing the forms of the Constitution, a sectional party has found within that Article establishing the Executive Department, the means of subverting the Constitution itself. A geographical line has been drawn across the Union, and all the States north of that line have united in the election of a man to the high office of President of the United States, whose opinions and purposes are hostile to slavery. He is to be entrusted with the administration of the common Government, because he has declared that that "Government cannot endure permanently half slave, half free," and that the public mind must rest in the belief that slavery is in the course of ultimate extinction.

I had another idea for a series set at the very end of the First Romulan War.

An admiral offers an older ship to a wounded captain in an effort to reclaim what Starfleet was about: exploration, since most of Starfleet's efforts had become about fighting the war. The ship goes in a brand new direction (we could call it up) and ends up in the middle of a large, harsh vision of space without any intelligent life to be found. Perhaps the first season would end with them meeting some kind of terrible and huge intelligence kind of like V'ger.

And it did. The slaves living in the South in the period just before the CW (1860-ish) were valued at over $3 billion. The slave market was completely decoupled from the market for cotton, and at those values there was no capacity for the North to purchase and free the slaves either - much less the South. In their eyes, the South couldn't afford to free them. Their hand needed to be forced.

340 I have Sandburg's 6 volume book on Lincoln. I need to dust it off. He's a complicated man.
I agree, I think he personally thought 'all men should be free' but I don't think he was politically committed to it until later in the war.

I think Lincoln was something of a proto-Trump. An outsider, who everyone in DC thought was a bumbling fool.

Of course he wasn't. He was a man, flawed, and it's relatively easy for any of us to point out those flaws. One of the telling facts of Lincoln though, is when he went to Richmond, after the fighting there stopped. The black people saw him as a savoir. a living saint who was there to change their lives forever.

He seemed to have been deeply touched by the experience, and I think if he had lived, he would have been much more committed to improving the lives of black people in this nation. We would have been better off, all of us, if he had lived.

342 325 the Democrats had a decade of nearly uncontested control of the government prior to seceding. There didn't really exist other ongoing grievances to fight about.
Posted by: Red Turban Someguy
___

They had been feuding for a long time over a variety of issues. Trade, banking, foreign policy, the power of the central government. Their place at the table, etc.

Just like the moving of the capital from Philadelphia (North) to DC (more South) was about who controlled the nation. And that was in 1790 when slavery was unquestionably legal everywhere in the US.

Posted by: Blago at December 01, 2023 11:52 AM (zdp32)

The secession happens before their elected opponents do anything. Before they take office. And again, these are things they've tolerated the back and forth on for decades and overall were not very material.

Compare it to say the Whiskey tax which promoted an immediate revolt. Some government policy can be a pain point for people, but Congress was mostly doing irrelevant dicking around for the first few decades, which was in many ways ideal.

I remember that. Star Fleet issued a mandate that ships were not supposed to exceed a certain warp factor, Four or something like that. Which would have added years to many interstellar trips.

(Kind of like the 55-mph speed limit on interstates in the '70s and '80s. Imagine Riker singing: "I can't drive -- Warp Factor Four!!!")

Wilson and FDR were lying sons of bitches. I'm not going to get into how FDR got us into the war, but Wilson was, in every respect, the bad guy. The Germans attacked merchant ships because they thought we were using those ships to send munitions to their enemies.

And we were.

Well in alternate history musing, dispense with the slavery part and imagine what the Caribbean could have been if starting 150 years ago, the US had taken control of it and nurtured it? Rather than a collection of the biggest international basket cases, the Caribbean could have been one of the greatest, most beautiful peaks of civilisation known. Instead - we have Cuba, Haiti, and Jamaica.

Long before the Boston Tea Party, Rhode Islanders were attacking British ships up and down Narragansett Bay. Newport, Bristol and Providence were major shipping ports back then and RIers were a pretty rebellious lot that didn't much care for the taxes the Brits were whacking the merchants with.

But the cultural appropriators in Boston who dressed up like injuns get all the press.

372 What I like most about the ACW debate is its "even though the heavens should fall" quality. Slavery is bad and had to be ended no matter what, and that determines who the good and bad guys are. Period. Kinda like South African apartheid did. But ending apartheid didn't work out so well for South Africa, did it? And, looking at the U.S., it's increasingly hard to conclude the ACW worked out well for us in terms of all its consequences too. This is no pro-slavery brief. But I think an awful lot of people would cut a great road through America to get at this particular devil. And they're so busy doing so, they've lost sight of all else. And the irony? With all this "ending whiteness" talk, we really haven't even achieved better views on race. But the "right side" hath prevailed. Thank goodness.
