They're not much better now. In the inner cities at least. Security guards, cops, metal detectors. Bars on the windows.
But even my old school in the burbs feels prisony -- all the doors are locked except the front door, and you need to check in with a security guard to walk in.
I hope schools in red areas are better off.

I was wondering why Israel agreed to the ceasefire given the very real negative consequences of relinquishing the initiative to Hamas. I don't think it is Netanyahu's fault. I'm now thinking that Biden, Blinken, etc. coerced Israel into backing off. The decision doesn't make sense unless the US gave Israel an ultimatum.

My point from the beginning of this mess is that we really REALLY don't want to get involved in this.
Things like muslim and black students rioting in schools against pro-Israel teachers is one of many reasons why I feel this way.
These kids have been brought up learning that they should view the world through critical theory. The oppressors vs. the oppressed. The good guys vs. the bad guys. Life is like a Marvel movie.
So we now have a situation that in their mind an evil genocidal regime (the people with power) calling for the death of the poor underdogs (the people in Gaza) simply because they look different than them.
And the US is picking sides with the bad guys.
How do you think this plays out domestically?
Not to mention all of the international repercussions.
Plus, you have a decent portion of the population pretending that it is not more complicated than "bomb them all to hell! They're just animals!"
That does not help the situation.

The Israelis accomplished their first goal before they agreed to this pause. That was to create a buffer zone between No Gaza and So Israel and to stop the rockets. They basically wiped out Hamas strongholds in theh North. This pause them gives them time to regroup, use the intelligence they collected and develop updated battle plan. Also resupply troops. And they get the most vulnerable hostages back.

My personal opinion is that Bibi is going to have a tough choice to make in the not too distant future. I can see Hamas turning over all the hostages except for the Israeli military (provided they are still alive). Hamas, will also hold onto a few of the US hostages (there are a couple who are probably military).
Historically, Hamas has held Israeli military hostages before (when Bibi was in office)...and they were able to negotiate the release of 1,000 Palestinian prisoners in exchange for one single Israeli soldier. That's a lesson not lost on them.
So, Bibi (who I'm convinced is focused on ending the threat) will have to decide whether to sacrifice those hostages in exchange for a better chance to remove the threat once and for all. He will have pressure from all sides telling him not to do it (mostly from the US)...but I think he pulls the pin and goes for it.

I came across a pretty fair and balanced Wiki recently on 'Christianity in the Middle East' that proves rather shockingly that the islamists are actively forcing Christians out of those countries, sometimes by brutal and barbaric actions rivaling October 7th in Israel.

My cousin and his family actually did suffer horribly due to his addiction. His son is an addict who will steal anything to fund his habit. Daughter was similar but got clean by confining herself to a year long rehab program. She had to give up her kids to their grandparents. She will never get custody back.
I do know addicts and the hell they live in. I know no one who has suffered like Hunter Biden.

The Israelis accomplished their first goal before they agreed to this pause. That was to create a buffer zone between No Gaza and So Israel and to stop the rockets. They basically wiped out Hamas strongholds in theh North. This pause them gives them time to regroup, use the intelligence they collected and develop updated battle plan. Also resupply troops. And they get the most vulnerable hostages back.
