Disney Has Another Failure On Its Hands With Activist, Pro-Socialist-Revolution "Childrens" Animation Movie Wish
Plus: Doctor Who/Whom

Even leftwing industry-shill outlets like Variety cannot hide Bob Iger's woke failure any longer.

But they're still trying, as we'll see.

Wish didn't debut at #1.

It didn't even debut at #2.

It came in third, behind the Hunger Games prequel which premiered last week, and behind the R-rated, mixed-review Napoleon. Which is very long, so it doesn't have many showings a day.

Wish, on the other hand, is like 80 minutes long, so it has lots and lots of showings.

"Wish" misfired in its opening weekend, extending Disney's bleak box office fortunes.

The animated musical fable, about the Wishing Star that so many Disney characters have wished upon over the studio's century-long history, failed to become the de facto choice for families around Thanksgiving. "Wish" opened in third place with a dull $31.7 million over the five-day holiday, a far cry from Disney's past Turkey Day feasts. Perhaps King Magnifico, the movie's villain (voiced by Chris Pine), is holding hostage the wishes of Disney executives?

Instead of recapturing the studio's magic, "Wish" joins a long list of its underperforming 2023 tentpoles, such as "The Marvels," "Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny," "The Haunted Mansion," and "Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania." This summer's "The Little Mermaid" didn't completely flounder with $569 million worldwide, but it's nowhere near the billion-dollar threshold that Disney's prior live-action adaptations (like "The Lion King" or "Beauty and the Beast") surpassed with ease. And although "Elemental" finished with $495 million globally, much stronger than its disappointing opening weekend would have suggested, Pixar hasn't restored its former glory after audiences were trained to watch on Disney+. (Disney is hoping that "Wish" has similar staying power during the busy holiday season.)

Disney's only unmitigated success in 2023 has been "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3," which opened in May and generated a healthy $845 million globally. And even then, analysts expected the epic conclusion to James Gunn's trilogy about intergalactic misfits to get closer to $1 billion, or at least end the series on a high. (2017's "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" remains the highest-grossing entry with $863 million.) Without a runaway blockbuster in the bunch, it's the first time since 2014 (except for the pandemic-stricken years of 2020 and 2021) that Disney hasn't launched a billion-dollar release.

It's an unthinkable reality for Disney after one of the most remarkable stretches of sheer box office domination. It reached its zenith in 2019 when seven (!) of the studio's releases, including "Avengers: Endgame" and "The Lion King," hit $1 billion globally. With its repertoire of Marvel, Pixar and Lucasfilm, Disney was minting money with anything it put in theaters. But this year has hinted that Disney no longer has the Midas touch at the box office.

"Disney set an impossibly high bar for itself during the 2010s, firing every cannon in its arsenal," says Shawn Robbins, the chief analyst at Boxoffice Pro. "The downside to success is that it becomes expected every time. The studio was always going to be in a challenged position when the well started to run dry."

Uh, no. So much spinning for Disney. Disney is not merely underperforming compared to their 2018-2019 high. They're outright flopping, no matter what the basis of comparison. YouTubers who follow Disney report that in the last few years, Disney has made four out of the five biggest box office failures of all time, with two of them joining that list of failure in just 2023 alone.

Case in point: "Avatar: The Way of Water," which Disney released at the end of 2022, is the seventh-highest grossing domestic release of this year with $283 million, surpassing the majority of the studio's would-be blockbusters: "Ant-Man 3" ($214 million), "Indiana Jones 5" ($174 million), "Elemental" ($154 million), "The Marvels" ($76 million so far) and "Haunted Mansion" ($67 million), among them.

You can't count Avatar. Disney does not own it, did not make it, and only receives a small cut of its box office. They are merely the distributor of that movie, having inherited it when they bought Fox studios, and James Cameron and his partners own almost all of the box office takings

As the movie theater business recovers from the pandemic, as well as the strikes that pushed several big blockbusters into 2024 and beyond, every studio has been forced to contend with a shrinking global box office. And while Disney doesn't have one of the top three movies of the year -- those spots belong to Warner Bros. "Barbie" ($1.4 billion) and Universal's "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" ($1.3 billion) and "Oppenheimer" ($950 million) -- it still has four of the 10-highest grossing releases worldwide. No other studio has more than two. Some of Disney's modest successes or outright flops would be classified as smashes for its rivals.

This is pure Bob Iger spin -- and pure progressive cope. This is straight from Iger's deceptive shareholder earnings conference meeting. On a simple gross revenues basis, yes, Disney had four of the top ten highest grossing films -- but most of them are actually money losers because their budgets were so huge.

The Marvels has currently made $190 million globally. That would sound like a lot of money, until you consider the film had a budget (with deductions made for British tax credits) of around $280 million, with another $100 million on top of that for marketing. (And of course the studio only takes 50% of the gross receipts.)

Bob Iger is a liar and a hustler and should be investigated by the SEC for making plainly-deceptive claims like this, and Variety should know better than to repeat them uncritically.

Much later in the piece, Variety admits this:

But one of the biggest elements is Disney movies are hugely expensive. They require production budgets of around $200 million, not including $100 million in marketing costs. This means the studio's films have sky-high benchmarks to break even. For any other studio, getting to $500 million worldwide is an impressive feat. But for Disney, it's necessary to rationalize these film's existence. Disney justifies these costs because its movies provide value beyond their theatrical revenues; they inspire lucrative consumer product lines, theme park attractions and eventual streaming releases on Disney+.

Disney spends huge sums of money in the belief that they are creating characters and movies that will feed their parks business.

But does anyone believe that people will flock to Disney's parks to see characters the public has so overwhelmingly rejected? How many people are going to a Disney park for the thrill of seeing a severe-looking Karen actress dressed up as Captain Marvel?

Disney's CEO Bob Iger has admitted the studio's mistake in leaning into quantity over quality during the pandemic. "We lost some focus," he said during a recent earnings call.

He's focusing on woke propaganda and his dream of being the Democrat candidate for president in 2028, not in producing value for consumers or shareholders.

Nolte:

The Disney Grooming Institute had the worst box office year imaginable in 2023. Couldn't happen to a nicer den of thieves of children's innocence.

After losing $106 million on Lightyear (2022) and another $152 million on Strange World (2022) -- both of which featured prominent gay plotlines aimed at little kids -- the Disney Grooming Syndicate roared into 2023, hoping for a much better year.

But...

Thanks to Disney's cratered reputation and string of terrible movies where good storytelling and relatable characters took a backseat to divisive politics, 2023 was an even bigger disaster.

According to my imperfect but good-faith estimates, only one Disney movie went into the black.

That's Guardians of the Galaxy 3, which made a smallish profit but not the big money Disney was hoping for the topper to the trilogy. He estimates that Elementals "only" lost $1.5 million, so that almost broke even.

But when you invest money, you're not looking to break even. If you just parked your money in a money market, you'd make 4.5% profit or something like that. "Breaking even" is actually losing money when you consider the things you could have invested in instead.

And the rest of Disney's offerings lost tens of millions or even hundreds of millions. I heard an estimate that Disney has lost over a billion dollars cumulative for all of its 2023 releases.

Meanwhile, Doctor Who returned this weekend. Or Doctor Who/Whom, as people are now calling it.

The episode was all about transgenderism, baby. Including his new transgender teen companion, and a quick lecture about asking for an alien's Preferred Pronouns.

Trans rights are human rights -- and alien rights, too.

The 60th-anniversary episode of "Doctor Who" featured a transgender sidekick who scolds the show's main character for "misgendering" an alien, eliciting backlash from conservatives on X.

Doctor Who called an alien known as Beep the Meep a "him," when a transgender character, who is the child of former sidekick Donna Noble, said, "You're assuming he as a pronoun?"

"My chosen pronoun is the definite article. I am always 'The Meep,'" the alien said after Dr. Who apologized and asked if the character was a, "he, she, or they."

The character later refers to Doctor Who as "male-presenting."

"You've got all that power. But there is a way to get rid of it. Something a male-presenting time-Lord will never understand."

Men denigrated again. And demanding that men give up their "power" to women and transsexuals.

It never gets old.

>>> Tennant is doing Who again?

I mean, such as it is. He's only doing three "specials," to try to restore interest in the franchise before the new doctor, a gay black man (of course!), takes over.

I should have mentioned that in the original post. Yes, the next new Doctor is gay and black. So they brought in Tennant briefly to try to get former fans to come back.

#RIPDoctorWho was trending on twitter over the weekend. But honestly, it's been dead for years and years.

13 Disney is only going to release 7 movies theatrically for 2024, as their schedule stands today.

They've decided it's now getting too expensive to stick by woke policies and lose hundreds of millions per movie - rather than change the policies, they'll just cut losses making fewer movies - sorry, Hollywood.

2 birds, 1 stone. Keep up the Disney theatrical boycott. Every movie counts...

Yep. You need not only do better than the zero risk return you have to be compensated for your risk. Even getting a 4.5% return would be a loss because you take a risk with your money and only get back the same return you’d get with no risk. If the zero risk return is 4.5% a fair return given the risk would be at least 8%.

GOTG seems to be held up differently than the rest of the MCU, probably because it's the only sub-franchise actually driven by one guy with an artistic vision, whether you like the vision or not.

GOTG3 was obviously the work of someone trying to make something good, as opposed to some no-name filmmaker brought into a machine to follow ever-changing instructions from corporate heads.

I've been tied up buying gifts for grand neices and nephews most of whom I've never met so can now resume my regularly scheduled programming.
The thing about Disney that amazes me is that they stopped making movies for children. The movies are for that insane demographic that loves all the letters in the LGBTQ+ alphabet. The problem is that they don;t go to Disney movies. Disney has abandoned the geeks, romantics and children who want to be entertained not lectured to.
I stopped buying any toy, clothing item that has any kind of Disney character logo or reference. Ihave no desire to ever take my grandkids to Disneyworld. I am not alone in this.

59 I won't get into how or why I saw Wish, but to be honest the story can be read from a conservative point of view. The character that gets overthrown believes he has the wisdom to grant wishes to whom he chooses. He's the central authority for the society. But the heroine believes that the people should have their own freedom to pursue their wishes and succeed or fail on their own.

But also to be honest, it wasn't that good. The songs needed better writers. And it's chock full of "Easter eggs" referring to other Disney IP which goes over well with fans, but isn't really for general audiences. And the references aren't as clever as they think.

Yes. Yes it had. Under Chibnall's reign the franchise has been destroyed for another generation. Just like all the long-running franchises (MCU, Star Wars, etc.) they need to shelve Dr. Who for a decade and then maybe try reviving it again. That's why the New Doctor Who worked back in 2005.

it was cute. way too long. the kids stayed awake so that's probably a good review in and of itself.

Gunn was walking a tight rope trying to make his reputation at that phase when he crosses over to WB and the DCU he started tacking left.

There are only two things that can explain this:

1) he feels liberated in his success and shingle change to let his freak flag fly and go full leftard as seen in Peacemaker and his other DC work

*and/or*

2) WB is if anything even more woke under the hood than Maus Haus and the pressure was exerted on him with compliance

It pisses me off, because GOTG1 was a surprise hit and I had been following its production and knew it was if not anti-woketard 3000 was at least Woke agnostic.

100 GoTG isn't really as folded into the rest of the MCU either. It's kind of its own thing to a point. You don't need to give a rat's hindquarters about Iron Man or Captain America or traditional cape and tights supers to be into a crew of rogues on a spaceship. It's only part of the MCU at all because Marvel is and always been incoherent, insisting on roping supers, spacemen, and various gods into the same thin porridge it calls a mythos.

132 I suspect that part of what we are seeing is accounting games.

It is better to
a/ make a movie that costs the studio $200M and breaks even than
b/ make a movie that costs $100M and has $100M in profit.

That $100M is taxed and ends up as cash, possibly dividends to shareholders. So if you can waste that $100M on salaries, perks for executives, and spending on connected friends, etc, then it is a way of turning shareholder profit into executive and employee profit. That is, assuming their costs are so high because there is a lot of internal waste.

In this case, the "woke" crap is part of the scam as it happens those are the executives in on the scheme. Same with the pedos in DC, they are all in on the scheme, and they can be trusted because of the Kompromat.

I have seen executives in other industries, who have a lot of stock options, sabotage share price and then argue to board that they need a ton more options to make up for the loss, and then they make out like bandits when the stock recovers due to the low strike price and high numbers. Is this happening. (really I do not follow this beyond Ace's posts, so I may be way off.)

I just finished the second season of HBO's Perry Mason. I liked it but I noticed how much everything had to cost. For example, the opening scene concerns the arson of a gambling ship. The arsonist begins in a packed room with roulette wheels and other gambling devices. He moves through many dozen gamblers, waiters etc. all in period costume (1933). Then through the kitchen into laundry where he starts the fire. All that for a minor plot point. And dozens of period cars.

They play some games, but people sniff out that even these costs aren't all included and put the company into the red.

A main issue now is that what comes out from your 250 million but really 350 million movie is a padded out, tired, ugly film with poor special effects that looks worse than a lot of 50 million dollar movies. Someone is skimming money for sure, but its cannibalization, because these duds don't boost toy sales, don't make people flock to the park or by 100 made for DVD/streaming add on shows. The administration is too bloated and can't be supported on this kind of income stream.

Amazon will probably never learn this lesson since streaming programming is just a small part of their revenue stream, if any. They can blow money on vanity projects and deconstructing IP like there's no tomorrow because they make up for the losses with other means.

Disney relies on cruises and theme parks for their alternate cash flow, but those are dependent to some extent on their entertainment product. If one goes, the other will follow.

187 Back in the 00s when Doctor Who came back, I started to get into it. It was cheesy but never preachy. I started to watch the classics which used to all be available on DailyMotion. Good, adventurous fun, although often it would get bogged down with filler since they'd stretch one story over four episodes in a month.

I kept watching the new stuff through Matt Smith but was noticing that they started slightly injecting feminist overtones; By the time the old guy came in, it started becoming a feminist wet dream, topped off with Jodie.

I stopped watching a little bit into Old Guy's tenure and never went back. Gary kept me informed that it became a massive woke cesspool when they brought on Dr. Karen.

From the stuff in this post, they are tripling down on the enormous failure of Dr. Karen's "The Timeless Children" which completely wrecked the character and spit in the face of everyone who worked on the show for the past 60ish years. That they have the gall to further insult the fans by saying "male-presenting guy is dumb" after the worst ratings the show ever had came after they tried to make him a woman - all I can say is fuck the BBC and the dead horse they're trying to ride on

The source material has been troubling in the age of film for a few reasons:

1) the story itself while not offending my own moral sensibility is a revenge tale where like Magneto no matter how sympathetic we are to his cause he crosses the moral horizon regarding balance of reciprocity

2) When it was written society was dealing with the aftermath of a revolution/counter-revolution cycle Dumas had suffered familaly for some of the cycle

3) it is LOOONNNGG and I love it for it, but is long a proper treatment requires either a trilogy or mini-series....

211 I was coerced into seeing Wish. It wasn't as bad as I thought.

Basic plot: magic king collects peoples wishes and puts them in a bubble... and grants one or two a year. Heroine wants her grandfather's wish granted. Finds out that people no longer remember their wish when they give it to the king, so asks for the wish back since it will never be granted... and king reveals it's mostly a power trip for him to rule and make decisions for everyone. The Wishing star shows up, and the star and heroine decide to steal the wish back and give it to grandfather so he at least knows what he wished for.

Finds out that she is now a traitor, and king is spooked by wishing star, seeing it as a threat to his power. Heroine starts a little rebellion, king embraces full on evil magic and it goes rapidly into "fight evil dude" scene.

Honestly, it wasn't as bad as I thought. Didn't have any sappy love story at all, one minor character had a crutch, but no LGBT nonsense. The king was white but his color didn't seem to matter.

Songs weren't all that great, and the donkey is clearly the start.

added bonus that young girl boss wanting HER gramps' wish most of all is not any kind of selfish....

Luckily the young girl boss topples the old evil person whose sin was kind of granting hollow "hope" to the masses before reaching into "evil magic"

great lessons to be teaching kids....bonus points if you understand that with two ounces effort I just made this a damning indictment of Barack Obama who ran on hope did not get a lot of shit done and weaponized the state to do evil magic....

The Count is not that sympathetic in the book as Dumas meant so show a man so invested in destroying his enemies that he would stop at almost nothing to do so. The almost is where he reluctantly spared Albert's life so that Albert could rewin the family honor by being a soldier.

My guess is that the original ending was viewed as turning off women. Mercedes pays the price for her unfaithfulness and Albert becomes an exile.

273 Comment from Nazi magazine 1931, Mickey was popular in Europe.

Blonde, freethinking, urban German youth tied to the apron strings of Jewish finance. Young people, were is your sense of self? Mickey Mouse is the shabbiest, most miserable ideal ever invented. Mickey Mouse is a recipe for mental enfeeblement sent over with capital from the Young Plan. Healthy instinct should tell every decent girl and honest boy that those filthy, dirt-caked vermin, the greatest carriers of bacteria in the animal kingdom, cannot be made into an ideal animal type. Have we nothing better to do than decorate our garments with filthy animals because Jewish business in America wants profits? Down with Jewish brainwashing of the people! Kick out the vermin! Down with Mickey Mouse, and up with the swastika!

To their credit, the Film-Kurier argues to the contrary: “Mickey Mouse, come on! We will brandish you as a cheerful emblem for all sensible people who oppose impiety, denial, and murder. Pin little Mickey to yourself as a distinguishing mark against the swastika and provocation.”

They are all hard to adapt to modern audiences although perhaps more than they should be.

Take his handling of the Musketeers, how many people understand that is was essentially a thinly veiled dissection of the inherent flaws in the French social structure and a treatise to some degree about the fripperies and foibles of any level of power?

Also if you made an actual series about their arc you would win up with one evil by the end.

Aramis goes flat out evil, there is no argument about it.

323 Evening.

Disney films require $200 million dollar budgets like I require this delicious Crown Royal pecan pie. I'm learning that the reason the budgets are so high is because the executives (Iger, Bergman, Kennedy, Feige) do not, for whatever reason, insist upon or encourage any sort of proper pre-production of a film.

In other words, no previsualizations.

So what an intelligent filmmaker does is previz their films, doing extensive storyboarding and animatics. Basically making the movie before making the movie. This allows filmmakers to figure out what works and what doesn't and lets them make the best movie possible while saving money. Apparently Disney *isn't* doing this. Instead they shoot the movie, test screen for audiences and do extensive (and expensive) reshoots based on those early reactions. This is why the movies are three times as expensive and look amateurish. Compare to The Creator which had a budget of $80 million and looked way better than Disney's recent films. They're just flushing money down the shitter when they don't have to.

Iger and his butt sniffing toadies need to go. Shareholders need to sue their pants off.

If they'd really led with the Wishing Star stuff and leaned hard into it while hiding all the PC garbage, they might have fooled me and I might have taken a chance on this movie, like I did with (ugh) "Barbie."
