How did we suddenly get such vocal support for "Palestine" in the West?
Well, it wasn't as sudden as it looks. Ed Driscoll picked out a couple of good examples. Steven Hayward:This week's peak demonstration of leftist anti-Semitic madness comes to us courtesy of the Oakland City Council, where a resolution endorsing a permanent cease-fire in the Israel-Gaza war was met with this parade of insane people: "Okay," you say; "It's Oakland. The Bay Area. Krazifornia. What do you expect?" All true, but don't underestimate how widely spread, and supremely vocal, this sentiment is across the country, and it potential for ongoing malignancy in our body politic. Look no further than Atlanta, where pro-Hamas protestors showed up at First Lady Rosalyn Carter's memorial service in Atlanta, apparently taking lessons tastelessness from the Westboro Baptists. Keep in mind that Jimmy Carter was the most pro-Palestinian president in our history, and gave a huge boost to the slander that Israel is an "Apartheid nation."
It is sometimes noted that in the 1960s, only about 5 percent of the college-age population were participants in the anti-war movement and the large protests they organized. (And I've been told by several older Boomer acquaintances that they attended anti-war protests chiefly to meet girls.) My friend John Tamny noted this fact recently, generously citing some of my own work in fact, to suggest the current pro-Hamas protests are unrepresentative and don't need to be taken that seriously. I disagree; the lesson of the anti-war movement of the 1960s--which by rapid degrees became an anti-American movement (remember "Amerikkka") - - is that it only takes a determined minority to de-range the politics and culture of a nation, with baleful results. Back in the 1960s the liberal establishment was befuddled by the New Left and didn't know how to respond, so it mostly capitulated. Seems the same thing is happening today after October 7. In the face of a demented, deranged left, our liberal establishment is once again calling for "dialogue."This kind of behavior is now just expected from the Left. Hayward's piece is a keeper. I'm a student in one of Britain's largest high schools and know no one who supports Israel over Palestine. Some readers might find that shocking. Consider, though, how my generation gets its news. TikTok is today by far the preferred source of news for teenagers; YouTube is next, Instagram third.I accidentally had an online conversation with one of these types this week (while providing data to support a reasonable position take by her uncle). I was a "psychopath" for looking beyond "THEY BOMBED HOSPITALS". Never mind the warnings that the hospitals (other than the one accidentally bombed by Hamas-friendly forces) would be bombed, or the military installations in, under or around the hospitals. That was the definition of "genocide" to her. No quote from a source other than, say, the UN or a university professor was believable. I think I did get her to concede that the KKK engaged in terrorism during the 20th Century. Her uncle was not just picking on Muslims. It was sorta like a struggle session, though. And I don't think she represented the worst of the type. Anyway, the CCP now has a mechanism, through TikTok, to help the Western Left dream of repeating the success of the Left of the 1960s.

The universities only divulged these contributions, which also included some $1.2 billion from China and $1.06 billion from Saudi Arabia, through a Department of Education online portal set up in 2019 to track previously unreported foreign funding.This may not be a good time to send a kid for a semester abroad in Qatar.

Foreign Policy magazine, for example, which aims to provide expert reporting and opinion on the Middle East and surrounding policy debates, is the official podcasting partner of the Doha Forum and the only media organization whose logo appears on the front page of the website for the Doha Debates. Both events are a project of the state-funded Qatar Foundation. . .This kind of patient planning was also exhibited by Hamas in planning the 10/7 attack, even if their planning for what would come after may not have foreseen all possible developments. Could this have an effect on the young staffers currently protesting any pro-Israel policies of the U.S. administration?
The IDF has announced that Hamas violated the terms of the current ceasefire and that it has resumed combat operations against Hamas in Gaza (below). The Times of Israel has posted a long story on the resumption of combat this morning . . .
Secretary of State Antony Blinken visited Israel and met with its war cabinet yesterday. He continues to caution Israel on the law of war, as though the IDF is some kind of a scofflaw. He made it clear that the Biden administration is unhappy with Israel and seeks to impose constraints on the operation of the IDF in Gaza. The Times of Israel covers Blinken's visit here. The Biden administration does not sound like a friend or ally of Israel. . .
Today it is also reported that Hamas branded Israeli child hostages in case they escaped. The Times of Israel covers that story here. Blinken might want to warn Hamas that they stand to be whipped with a wet noodle if they keep it up.

The "normies" sure aren't very good at messaging. I think what's going on in people's private lives is brighter than what we hear about in the electronic world.

Also, those people to the right of the lava tongue in the pic are in a risky place. The front of the lava wall could collapse at any instant, and send a flash flood of lava down upon them.

Orson Welles peice is interesting and sort of points the way toward the radical politics and hedonistic deviancy that are the real legacies of Hollywood. The whole Blacklist affair was correct in it's diagnosis. Now Hollywood is an ossified, coprolitic zombie lurching into the dustbin of history. Good riddance.

Something off about that pic. I'd expect huge billows of steam where the hot lava impinges on the snow-covered ground. Also, those people to the right of the lava tongue in the pic are in a risky place. The front of the lava wall could collapse at any instant, and send a flash flood of lava down upon them.

I saw a documentary about a volcano that erupted, an island off of... New Zealand? Australia? Who cares, one of them. So the volcano erupts, but it's a tourist destination, and people are now trapped on the island. The eruption was more of a steam blast, but it hit so hard, people are literally melting to death. I forget how many died, and those who survived, it's obviously a tragedy, but yeah, nature is trying to kill you. You better respect it.

I've read that a volcano has erupted just offshore of Iwo Jima too. And that a new island has formed near Japan. I'm not sure if all this vulcanism is a new phenomenon or is it just better reporting.
Offshore of Japan at least is pretty well surveilled. Japan is made of multiple islands so ferries carrying trucks is how they do a lot of their shipping. And they obviously keep a *very* close eye on the China Sea on Japan's west coast.

Let me describe a different perspective in the current Israel/Palestine war.
I think Israel is the aggrieved in the current conflict. I believe Hamas is a terrorist organization that must be dealt with by Israel, in complete and resounding fashion to obtain any level of peace in their country. This will likely involve outcomes that have collateral damage.
I also think that none of these realities are necessarily America's burden. We don't have to provide bombs or money or anything at all. We don't need to provide input on their issues and our input is actually interference.
I would not give two shits if a group of Israeli students were decrying a crackdown on abortion or border crossings in America. America's policies are its own for the making and what Israel or Australia or anyone else thinks about it is irrelevant.
BUT, when you involve American dollars and American military lives in the conflicts in Israel, now it does matter what Americans (including Free Palestine protesters) think about the issue, and those thoughts are divided.
I think we should decouple from Israel, to both remove ourselves from the conflict and free Israel from our interference.

I've been close enough to a flowing river of lava to feel the heat from it. Kilauea on the Big Island. I recall having to sign some sort of waiver from the park service to travel on the road that had been enveloped by the lava. I did a lot of dumb things when I was younger...

I think Israel is a good neighbor and their bad neighbor Hamas also directly affects me. My crazy wife wants to help the neighbor Ukraine two blocks from us though over my objections .

Try and name the last time when an American military life was lost in support of Israel; they're the political excuse for our engagement in the middle east, but the actual reason is to ensure that Saudi and the Gulf States are not dominated/taken over by Iran/Russia/China, either individually or jointly. Because that area controls the economy, and hence the political allegiance, of Europe.

The Clintons were heavily "invested" in Haiti. They made a royal mess of the place. So, on the one hand you have an idea what the US would look like if the Clintons remained in political power to a greater extent here. Not that Obama and *biden are any better. They're not. Perhaps worse.
But Haiti could have pulled itself out of the sewer, but didn't. Whether that's the Clinton's fault is arguable. They did funnel a lot of money into the place. Yeah, it was a scam. All their "initiatives" are grifting ops.

The best way for us to do this would be to have massively developed our own energy resources - instead we have been persuing a policy to make our own position, and the rest of the worlds, vastly more precarious.
This country currently faces, in many ways, what in the past was talked about as a "wicked problem" - one in which every possible outcome is bad. There are no good ways out, we can only try to pick the least bad future. (but we seem set on doing the opposite)

Refining capacity is our Achilles heal, IMO. They are big, few, and extremely flammable. That volcano looks like they call a'a in Hawaii. Chunky, crumbly, and slow. Like a gritty push being extrude from a cyst. Went out yesterday with my daughter to run some errands and we saw a cute, very visible set-up for a local charity's annual toy drive. They were in the front parking lot of a prominent mall at one of our main street's business intersections. Sparkly lights, decorations, Santa's elves...all very high profile.
On the way home from the errands, we noticed a small pro-Palestine rally ( about 7 men and one woman wearing keffiyehs and holding the flag of Palestine. ) They positioned themselves up directly across from the big toy drive. Just as I was grumbling that 'they' are crapping on Christmas everywhere, my daughter pointed out that they probably picked that spot because the local news trucks were across the street swarming/filming the toy drive. We live here and didn't know that there would be news trucks at the toy drive. Somehow, the protesters not only knew, but got together to get some on-air time, for free.

IIRC the Russians have substantial military assets in Syria. The naval base at Tartus specifically. A CTG in the Eastern Med is as much a signal to Moscow as it is to Iran, Egypt, Jordan and Israel.

The way I look at it, if the schoolyard bully is starting at you, pacing back and forth, pounding one fist into the other, and he's doing it from about 20 feet away, that's deterrence. He's saying "don't mess with me."
If he's nose to nose with you, he's basically goading you into hitting him, because he wants an excuse to hit you back. And at some point, you kinda reach the conclusion you gotta throw the punch. Regardless of what's coming back at you.

The guy selling investments can make it make sense why you should buy an annuity, at less than inflation rates. It's a logical pitch, plenty of charts and graphs, he's wearing a suit, blah blah blah.
The proper play is "never listen to the guy telling you your money can make more money if you just let him hold it". The proper play is also "never trust the guy or gal telling you to trust them, because they're going to reform the political party that has fucked you for generations".
Hence, my lack of trust in MTG.

Since they're going above and beyond what's actually required by LOAC (Law Of Armed Conflict, not just war), Blinken is a liar or an idiot (or, likely, both) in lecturing them on anything.
By the actual Geneva Conventions (that have been signed by everyone, not just the handful of extra, stupid ones we haven't even made legal, yet), when Hamas, as the actual governing body of Gaza, attacked (act of war) and committed atrocities, every single fighter in uniform became subject to immediate execution upon capture as a war criminal. (Unless they could argue distinctions that could be checked. But Hamas isn't even organized sufficiently to provide that sort of data.)
When the civilians came in and ALSO participated in those atrocities, THEY became subject to the same sort of repercussions. Israel had a right to provide punitive, collective punishment against the "civilians" in Gaza. When they hide behind "civilians" and utilize "civilian" infrastructure as shields for military personnel, equipment, and operations, THERE ARE NO LONGER ANY "INNOCENTS" in Gaza for purposes of LOAC.
Period.

My point being ? When it's a real fight, there are no rules. It's a boxing match when rules are involved.

I gave up on correcting wikipedia back when Bush fired the US AGs and I got into an editing battle with the Left, who insisted that this was somehow "unprecedented" and none of my cites were valid. You can not win against people with no integrity and lots of free time.
I gave up on reddit when they started shadow banning. Serious question to ponder -- why would anyone contribute to a site where they are potentially shadowbanned or suppressed? Is this a point the Right needs to stress to undermine the Lefty social media empire?
On reddit it is out of control and although I only ever contributed to technical subs and only when I was provably correct and helping out others, I often got shadowbanned because the mods are really horrible and have decided they know more than everyone about anything so they must prevent wrong speak.

Just supposin' which is a kinda conservative thing to consider. Trump wanted to buy up a small piece of land in Atlantic City, could possibly have gone the eminent domain route, but ended up building all around her.
It's just a red herring to me. Someone comes out of nowhere with high intellect and latches on to a HUGE RFK Jr issue? Makes me nervous. Not that I think folks in the middle want their quality of life to return to 1923 level. But too many are too dumb to spend five minutes on Wiki learning about RFK Jr. It's all name recognition, too often.
