Lazy, Low-Skill Generation Z Zeros Say They Should Be Hired for Their Personalities, Not Their Qualifications or Job Performance
Tech companies actually were hiring unqualified ninnies for their "personalities," and for diversity checkbox purposes. Photos of the staff at tech firms often featured lots of young dorky-looking men -- the actual workers -- and also a lot of cute bubbly sorority girls. These were hired for purposes of decoration and giving the dorky dudes something to look at in between coding.
They're doing less of that now that the Era of Dirt-Cheap Credit is over and shareholders expect them to start turning a profit. But young useless "workers" insist they should be hired no matter how unqualified they are because they bring good "vibes" to an office.Forget the resume -- Gen Z thinks you should hire them for their personalities. According to the youngest generation in the workforce, their humor and wit provides a certain vibrance older employees apparently lack. They've even invented a term -- "personality hire" -- to describe their self-perceived function in a corporate setting: to provide all the jokes, banter and playfulness needed in order to "set the vibes." TikToker and corporate America employee Bella Rose Mortel, a 22-year-old self-proclaimed "chief vibes officer," told Business Insider that her previous managers have appreciated her "energy," calling it "the nicest compliment" she's received. After her series of TikToks calling for an "unserious" workplace and the integration of Gen Z lingo into office parlance went viral, Mortel said her manager at software company Beehiiv found the videos hilarious. "In a team call yesterday, he was like, 'Before we get started, Bella Rose, do you want to set the vibes today for our call?'" the social media strategist told Business Insider. Mortel's videos have sparked realization among fellow so-called "personality hires," who feel their mission is to lighten things up, not lighten someone else's workload.So... In the video, which scored 6.5 million views, the "personality hire" plays with her colleague's hair and, despite having "no idea" what a certain project is about, fearlessly volunteers to call the "terrifying" boss and sweettalk him into an extension. "The personality hire is also the client whisperer," commented one viewer. "The personality hire is critical to the social equilibrium of the workplace," voiced another. ... For anyone eager to take on the burden of the "personality hire" and "stay playful at work," Mortel recommends slowly integrating Gen Z slang terms into the office to transform your boss into a "girlie." "This is what you gotta do," she instructed, advising viewers to call their managers "king." "Every time they're like, 'Hey, great job,' you say, 'Slay.'" When they begin to say it back, that's when you know you've met your performance goals, or "brought the vibes to the workplace."Basically, they want to change the name of "Diversity Hires," which almost makes it sound like businesses are hiring people who are unqualified for the job (almost!), to "Personality Hires," which makes it sound like unqualified people with bad work ethics are somehow really bringing a lot to the table. Business Insider euphemizes these unqualified deadweights as people with "soft skills." Of course the idiots on TikTok are all self-IDing as personality hires, or demanding they they be given jobs as personality hires. There's a video of the article at the TikTok dullard who started this new meme. She's absolutely insufferable. The "vibe" she brings is a violent hatred of the human race and a desire to see it ended. So the big thing she brings to work is getting her boss to say "slay." But the youngest generation, Generation Alpha, says that's a trap. Saying "slay" is now passe and makes you sound old.
Using the words 'slay', 'bet' and the laughing emoji makes you look old, according to Generation Alpha. The slang terms, popular with Gen Z (those aged 13-26), are 'out' and newer terms including 'GYAT', 'preppy' and the crying emoji are in. Influencer Nicole Pellegrino, 31, from New Jersey shared a clip to Tiktok speaking to her 'Gen Alpha' sister and her 'bestie'. Gen Alpha, those currently aged 13 and under, believe that when texting, if you laugh you should send the crying emoji instead. 'If something is funny, you do the crying emoji, no one laughs by laughing,' Nicole's sister explains in the clip. 'The skull is used if you're insulting someone, as a joke,' she adds. She then goes onto explain that if she got a text saying 'I have a bigger GYAT than you, she would reply saying BSFR ('be so for real') followed by a skull emoji to imply that she disagrees. A dictionary to the new Gen Alpha slang terms Gyat: A term used to describe a person's curvaceous behind (girl your a** thick) Rizzler: Someone who is a good at picking up women Skibidi: Derived from the YouTube animated series Skibidi Toilet, used in gaming to describe someone who is evil or bad Fanum tax: Someone who steals your food, comes from a creator named Fanum who was often seen grabbing bites of his friends' meals Preppy: Wearing pink or pastel Vanilla girl: Wearing collegiate style clothes Crying emoji: Something is funny Skull emoji: Something is funny in a jokey mean way Bet (favoured by Gen Z, now out): For sure Slay (favoured by Gen Z, now out), you've done wellUgh. Once upon a time my company decided to try and put me in management. I did well with getting things done correctly and on-time. My workers liked me, But...
Managers go to meetings. Managers are expected to produce powerpoints with transitions and animation and shit... the stuff which prevents them from doing the job they were nominally hire for. My powerpoints would be one slide with 5, or fewer, words.
I was transitioned back into engineering.

Soft skills are real, and in customer service and support jobs, it's something we look for. Comfort will smalltalk. Rapport. Empathy. All good things, as are writing skills and tone (E-Mail work) and speech clarity/enunciation (phone work).
If you give me two support engineers where one of them is technically brilliant but a buffoon and the other is merely technically competent but nice and people like him or her, I'm putting the latter on the phone and holding the former in reserve for just really bad problems.
Soft skills are real, and they matter. Soft skills, however, are an *adjunct* to the job. They are sometimes a job requirement, but are never the *only* job requirement. If all you have to bring to the table is "soft skills" - real or imagined, I don't care - then there is no place for you at the table. You have to be able to do something with those skills.

The absolute pride in not knowing how anything works is a weird cultural phenomena.
Years ago, I was out at dinner with a group of coworkers / friends, and was laughing about how my then-girlfriend didn't know how to change a tire and had to call me from the side of the road to change the tire for her.
Turns out no one at my table had ever changed a tire. Basically got variations of "that's what AAA is for" or "I don't even know if my car has a spare" and they thought I was the weird one. And they all seemed proud of their ignorance.
I've run in to that many times in my life.
I'm an older millennial FWIW, but I think the younger generations are even worse.

I read something a while ago which attributed this to the rise in data retention technology. Once you had to memorize everything, then you could write stuff down, then you could buy a book which contained stuff others had written down, now you have the internet on your phone.
All the world's knowledge, unless banned by the algorithm, at you fingertips but you don't KNOW anything. No one retains anything because you can always just look it up again and they'll just blindly accept whatever comes up first in a google search.

I had summer jobs in construction and a loading dock way back in the 70's when I was in school.
There would be a dust-up almost every week, sometimes with punches being thrown. Then it was over and you'd go back to work. High-T.

Yeah, I think it was a textbook case of why civil actions are better than government regulation.
McDonald's lowered to temperature of their coffee from nearly boiling to just pretty fucking hot after that lawsuit.
Average home coffee maker brews at like 160 degrees. McDonald's amped it up to 200-210 degrees, despite knowing that at those temperatures, 3rd degree burns are all but guaranteed. But they got a hire yield of coffee from the beans AND they could brag that their coffee stayed hot longer than their competitors.
And the plaintiff had to have like major reconstructive surgery of her genitals. It wasn't a minor burn.

When I was younger, I used to think about what it must have been like to be a peasant during the dark ages. They saw the roman roads and aqueducts and crumbling infrastructure, but no one knew exactly what it was for, how it worked, how to maintain it, nor did they have the (political, I guess) will to do so.
Must have been very weird.
I think that it is possible, maybe even likely, that future generations will experience that as well.

McDonalds was selling coffee at a temperature no normal person would expect it to be at. Literally just a few degrees shy of boiling. A good 30-40 degrees hotter than coffee you make at home or buy in a bodega.
At those temperatures, you only need it on your skin for seconds before you get third degree burns. Normal coffee spilling on you will cool down before it causes any kind of severe burn.
McDonalds was in the wrong. They were selling an inherently unsafe product that was causing severe burns if it leaked.
So the question becomes, how do we as a society, discourage that kind of thing? Through regulations and government dictates, or through civil actions where a jury decides if you were wrong, and how wrong you were?
I definitely land on the civil suit side of things.

Step-daughter's Northern CA Bay Area high school had a mandatory requirement to graduate of a semester of "volunteer" work (as a cheerleader, she "volunteered" to coach Pop Warner football cheerleaders).
I used to mock "That's the old volunteer spirit!"

So she was an older woman in the passenger seat of the car, her son (or maybe even grandson) was driving. The drive thru guy handed them their order, driver hands it to grandma, it ends up all over her lap.
She's in excruciating pain, they tried to get the clothes off, and --- yes, the medical details are pretty horrific.
It's disputed whether or not the lid was on tightly, whether the driver fucked it up, or the grandma squeezed the coffee too hard and the lid popped off, etc. etc. but what is not disputed is that McDonald's policy was to serve coffee are ludicrously high temperatures.
Which is why the jury found for the plaintiff.
Also, another part of the story is that the appeals court knocked down the jury verdict pretty dramatically. Grandma did not get rich off the case at all.

Obviously we don't know the exact details of settlement discussions, but it sounds like McDonald's (or, more likely, their insurance company) did try to settle. They just came in really low.

I volunteered for one, and chatted with about 4 groups of 5-6 students. Each guy was interested in programming, enthusiastic, was already doing something in tech, using actual languages, writing actual code and had a good idea of what they wanted to do when they joined the work force.
The ladies on the other hand, all but one, had no real interest, just saw the offer of a visit to a company and signed up. They were studying all sorts of subjects - good subjects like math, economics, but no idea or interest in tech, they had nothing to say, nothing to ask.
Women had no interest in the workplace when it was 12 hours down a mine getting black lung, as soon as they think its surfing the web all day in an air conditioned office in a mangerial position they are all over it.
Also, there is a super strong correlation between DEI enthusiasts and people who stand around all day talking, playing games and well, doing anything but working.
