The Morning Rant: Minimalist Edition

punk-monkey.jpg

There is an argument that America should simply stay out of the Middle East; that our foreign entanglements are a burden...financially, militarily, socially, geopolitically. It is a tempting one to embrace because of our current financial and political woes.

In a perfect world that would be reasonable. The Middle East is a nasty and brutal part of the world, with ancient animosities that bubble up constantly and engulf everyone around them. So why not simply stay out of it and defend the most narrowly defined American interests: trade routes and our citizens.

But that argument fails all but the most cursory examination. Oil is the lifeblood of the world, and even if America were to be energy independent, its trading partners aren't. Without a powerful presence in the region, it would be difficult to protect those routes and people. And of course the 800 pound keffiya-clad terrorist in the room doesn't particularly care whether we are engaged or not...the creation of a worldwide caliphate is the goal of Islam (militant or not), and they have been pursuing that goal for a very long time. Pushing back against them, however hamhandedly, is in our long-term national interest.

But this argument also has a subtext, and that is the obvious antipathy toward Israel and Jews. It is difficult to take the isolationist philosophy seriously when it is trotted out only when the topic is support for Israel.

But the argument also fails in the context of protecting American citizens. Israel is the tip of the Western spear wielded against Islam's expansionist war, and its credo is clear that Israel is only the first domino to fall. So withdrawing support for Israel would merely hasten Islam's march on America. And let us not ignore the fact that our military association with Israel is a two-way street. We get intelligence, military technology, a secure place to base war materiel, and a stout and loyal ally.

Oh...and Israel is the only free country in the region. Perhaps support for such a country pays dividends in the fight against encroaching totalitarianism. Of course, we also support despotic dictators and countries whose behavior is an affront to freedom. But that is the world we live in. Consistency demands that if we withdraw from the region, we also withdraw our support for all of the bad actors in that region. At that point Israel would be far more able to defend itself on its own against its local enemies, although much of the world would be in the dark and cold, because Iran, Russia, China and a host of other nations would rush into the void and promptly throw the world into even more chaos than it currently endures.

Positing a minimally engaged America, and then suggesting that our support for Israel is misguided is simply thinly veiled anti-Semitism. We have allies throughout the world...should we abandon them? South Korea? Japan? Taiwan? Does anyone think that Taiwan...and the worldwide microprocessor industry...would survive a month without us? Could Korea withstand a North Korean artillery barrage that lasted three months? And Japan...against China or Russia or North Korea...could they ramp up domestic production and create a large standing army before they were inundated?

Yes; America should choose its allies more carefully. We are simply a checkbook for dozens of countries that are neutral at best and actively hostile at worst.

No; America should not abandon one of its most loyal allies simply because of the Jew-hate that is bubbling up everywhere in the post-modern world. To allow that to govern our geopolitical decisions will propel us down the same path that the world was on in the 1930s, and that is a very bad history to repeat.

61 Just another one of the white colonialist Jews killed in combat a couple of days ago:

Feleke’s family made aliya to Israel from Ethiopia in 2004 and lived for a year in an absorption center in Beersheba. From there, they moved to Bat Yam, where Feleke graduated from a yeshiva high school. The family moved to Kiryat Gat four years ago.

While volunteering with the fire and rescue service and guiding in the Bnei Akiva youth movement, Feleke participated in a program that combined Torah study with preparation for army service. He followed that up with additional Torah study in Safed.

According to his brother, Feleke wanted to be drafted into the Commando Brigade but did not initially make it. He was accepted by the paratroopers, and when he tried out again for the Commando Brigade, he made it into the elite Duvdevan unit.

“He had recently finished the training course for that and received a company excellence award. He was supposed to go to officers’ training, but because of the war that got delayed and he stayed where he was to fight,” his brother Noam says.

Good luck defeating a country that has people like that.

80 Very rationally put. The tendencies of some towards isolationism grate on my. One other thing the isolationist crowd doesn’t get is that the enemy gets a vote.

-----------------

I think most people are not arguing for complete isolationism, but more than what we have. We have never been truly isolationist. The Monroe Doctrine set forth what seemed like a reasonable structure. Plus this was coupled with British control over the seas enabling free trade (for the most part). We have assumed their role in that regard, but arguably expanded on it.

Again, I think arguments for being the world's police force would be a lot easier sell if we were willing to secure our own borders.

The mask eventually slips off. and that is because complete dis-engagement was cute before WWII, but now it's nonsensical, detached from reality and comes from a world view that is colored in antisemitic tropes. 120 I frankly don't have any issue with degrading Russia by using Ukraine as an instrument. Every time Putin needed to boost his popularity he invaded under the pretext of protecting Russian citizens- which he insidiously flooded into those regions. As long as Russia has existed they've used this tactic. When they invaded Crimea, the world fundamentally did zero, and that encouraged Russia into further grabs and the Caucuses situation. I would have preferred we just starved them out by flooding the oil market and driving their economy into the ground- which is what Trump was doing. But Democrats had to attack our entire energy infrastructure and so the small minded idiots went the Ukraine route. By the way, "losing" Ukraine now will only encourage the Russians further and with China they will double down on trying to destroy us.

Ok. I'll bite.

Possible software duplication of ballot batchs.

Assume you have a stack of ballots that can be defined as a batch.

You run the batch through the scanner once and you will generate an image for every ballot. Each image will have a random variation in the positioning and alignment of the QR code due to minute differences in how each ballot was printed and/or fed through the scanner. The batch as a whole now has a unique "signature" in the form of where those QR codes are located on the ballot images in the batch.

Now if you were to feed that same batch of ballots through the scanner a second time, the alignment and position of the QR code on each ballot in the second bstch would still be different than the first batch even though you are scanning the very same ballots. This would be due to tiny random variations in how each ballot gets fed into the scanner. So even though you scanned the same ballots, the second rescanned batch would have a different QR code location "signature" than the first. [more at link]

158 >> By the way, "losing" Ukraine now will only encourage the Russians further and with China they will double down on trying to destroy us.

I see no indication this is true. In fact, the reason this idiotic war happened in the first place is because we, NATO, broke our promise to Russia constantly and kept expanding NATO eastward.

Putin knows exactly what we did in Ukraine to topple the government in 2014 which is why he took Crimea and the world did squat. He knows we were planning to invite Ukraine into NATO because we started telling the world in 2008 we would along with Georgia which he also invaded.

Under Trump that globalist push eastward stopped for 4 years and when Trump started to look into the corruption in Ukraine they impeached him over CIA created lies.

185 America’s media and political class is analyzing, debating, and shaping a narrative in Gaza that’s entirely different from the one being discussed in Israeli media. This gap, born from casual racism, deliberate credulity, and reflexive alignment with the US government’s party line, is creating a media failure...

Israel is engaging in massive population transfers and attempting to depopulate Gaza, and everything it does must be understood through this lens...to remove over 1 million people form North Gaza into refugee camps in South Gaza.

American media continued to frame every Israeli Defense Forces action...as part of some elaborate “hunt for Hamas.” The most prominent example is the weeks-long build up to Israel’s “raid” of al-Shifa hospital in mid-November.

Hamas fighters no doubt attacked the Israeli military convoy as it made its way to the hospital, but the reports heavily implying there was a shooting coming from inside the hospital were incorrect.

We have mounds of evidence, increasing by the day, of a policy of collective punishment and collective guilt. Those calling the shots in US media should start updating their framing of this conflict accordingly.

200 I would argue that it is very much in the US interest to keep a country such as Egypt as an ally, even if they are not a very good one. Reason: Egypt holds an incredibly strategic position in the world (always has, that's why it's always been important) and it has caused a lot of trouble over the past century. Currently they have a military dictator, al-Sisi, who keeps a tight lid on all the crazies for his own safeties sake. I argue that is the *highest* form of government that a place like Egypt can ever hope for, and it is very much in our interest to see that he and his government stay in power.

205 This Pax Americana talk is basically advocacy for a kind of empire. You can't have small, limited government at home and be the world's policeman. We could content ourselves with being the arsenal of democracy and profiting from our foreign policy, but sales don't provide the kind of influence and control that aid does, and we want client states. This is all just a rehash of what Bill Kristol called National Greatness Conservatism back in The Weekly Standard days, which is just a very euphemistic way of saying "I'm for the military industrial complex that Ike warned us about." It's a source of continuing amazement to me that the same people who characterize daily life in America as being like life under Antiochus Epiphanes then turn around and argue that the our government and politicians are the moral and just (and apparently competent as well) the moment their policymaking is directed outside our borders instead of at us.

They really aren't. They're losing thousands of men in the salient around Avdiivka, with very little to show for it. The Ukes are actually pushing south across the Dnieper and moving towards the coast. It's slow going, but they are moving forward.

302 The only reason Ukraine had the Crimea to begin with is because Khrushchev gave it to them in the 50s. This idea that the Crimea is ancient Ukrainian territory is ridiculous.

You really should read some history. This is a complicated issue of very long standing. You could argue that it goes back to at least Bohdan Khmelnytsky, in the Treaty or Pereyaslav, in which he allied with Russia against the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, who ruled part of Ukraine at the time. The tsar claimed it made Ukraine part of Russia. Ukraine disagreed.
Posted by: Archimedes

Oh please. I've read plenty of Russian history. Your "Ukraine, Good! Russia, Bad!" shtick is getting very tiresome.

The Ukrainian Cossacks never ruled Crimea. It was a Tatar Khanate before the Russian conquest, and thereafter the Riviera of the Russian aristocracy.

I have isolationist tendencies. The problem, as I see it, is that the other side has interventionist tendencies. They never see a region, or a conflict, that we shouldn't be involved in.

I'd be perfectly fine with saying, here's a small list of countries who's security we consider important and will protect... and the rest of you can look after yourselves. And then, if necessary, we enter the fray whole-heartedly. To win. As quickly, and brutally, as necessary. But, instead, we half-ass our way around things as a way to bleed the US of blood and treasure.

Mr. Yanukovich is being advised by Paul Manafort, a Republican strategist from the firm Davis, Manafort & Freedman, Inc., which has advised several U.S. presidents. Ukraine's outgoing president, Victor Yushenko, received American-style help and campaign advice from Hillary Clinton's campaign strategist, Mark Penn, who was president of the big American PR firm, Burson-Marsteller. The Ukraine is a gold mine for big American political firms, since it is one of the largest countries in Europe, has obscure and weakly-enforced campaign laws, and the major Ukrainian political parties are backed by big businesses, with money to finance professional campaigns."

There's just a wealth of well informed, smart people who are generally respectful and considerate, and most put-downs are factual and don't involve a lot of gratuitous nonsense.

Not too many days ago, some commenter and I don't recall who reminded someone that insulting American Jews was not much of an encouragement for them to come around to a conservative point of view. And that is completely correct.

Sefton's rant against Thomas Massie yesterday morning reflects quite clearly that deep and pretty disgusting predjudices lurk in each of us. Leaders, those hoping to make convincing arguments that bring people into a better mindset, avoid the broad-brush and deeply insulting language and dredged up stereotypes that were front and center of his comments. Today's discussion about natives of NY and NJ who are normal people appalled by the condition of domestic politics also makes the point. I don't know what Rep. Massie said because after reading a very sterotypical response, I stopped caring.

355 From a quick DDG!

Charles XII of Sweden was shot at Fredriksten fortress in Halden [Norway] on 30 November 1718. Researchers have now concluded that the shot could not possibly have been fired at close range by anyone among the king's own Swedish soldiers,. (The skull was photographed by Otto Mattsson at the opening of the king's coffin in 1917)

A mystery solved: Who killed the Swedish king Charles XII?
For centuries experts have debated who killed the Swedish King Charles XII. A new Finnish study in which the researchers shot at artificial skulls completely refutes the idea that he was killed by his own war-weary soldiers.

Posted by: runner at December 07, 2023 12:05 PM (V13WU)

1) I think in most cases it is a bad idea. It's bad not just on our side (the above discussion about the $10k hammer) but also for the people we are trying to 'help.' How deformed is Europe's priorities after sitting for 80 years under the umbrella of our 'protection'?

2) I think it is justifiable in certain circumstances (also enumerated above in the case of Israel as a trade partner, setting aside the whole stable democracy jazz.) The same argument can be made for Taiwan (and with the same caveats.)

Korea is an example of the dark side of both Israel and Taiwan example though. Could they defend themselves against NorKo? Do we NEED to be there? I dunno. I'd kind of tend to come down on no.

I like the 180 yard par 3's with an elevated tee. I use a soft eight iron.

Either it is just missing the outgoing mail truck, or they are having to keep taping a mangled box together.

It's a really, REALLY, good film.

It's essentially a WWII drama about love, loss and longing, about the spirit to prevail, about duty and coping with internal failures, with an angry 300ft nuclear fire breathing monster as a side story.

Imagine Spildberg, Miyazake and Michael Bay making a movie and you have Godzilla Minus One.

382 If oil is the justification to spend American treasure and perhaps blood in the Middle East, why settle for a half-way job of establishing an ersatz empire? Why prop up the House of Saud as puppet emperors on the promise they'll sell us cheap oil? Why not establish our own empire?

Invade, kill off the resistance, garrison troops to secure the oil infrastructure, bid out contracts to oil companies to produce the oil, bomb anybody who looks crosswise at us back into the stone age. Go full Roman, be the Khan, do empire right.

Why not? Can it be more expensive and less dependable than the current situation?

384 If the Maidan coup was a popular revolt why did the people vote for the same "pro-Russian" platform in their next election? Of course he either decided not to, or was unable to, end the war against those people...

When the Euromaidan Revolution began in late 2013, Poroshenko became an increasingly active and vocal supporter. He had worked long to try to steer the Yanukovych administration toward European integration. ...Poroshenko gave a speech on Maidan and used his Channel 5 television station to support and give voice to the protestors...
Campaigning as independent, socially conservative party that would be tough on both Ukraine’s entrenched corruption and new conflicts in the separatist republics in the east

385 It's not an either/or. Trump had effectively solved the problem, for virtually no money. Had he been allowed to complete the wall, we'd no longer be discussing this.

Posted by: Archimedes at December 07, 2023 11:19 AM

President Trump did not come close to solving the border issue. He came close to resolving the issue of not having a full border wall. But that is only a small part of the massive problem that is illegal alien invasion.

The bigger issue is lack of enforcement of immigration laws. And lack of enforcement of the existing border wall and fence. There are numerous videos showing border patrol actually facilitating the entrance of illegal aliens into the country. Not doing their jobs to enforce current laws.

There are also numerous immigration laws on the books which punish companies for hiring illegal aliens. Those laws are not enforced. There are also numerous laws on the books to deport illegal aliens for crimes of being here illegally and for committing crimes on top of being here illegally. Those laws are not enforced. This is in addition to the fact that we have states across the country who deem themselves "sanctuary" for illegal aliens.

That sound like a Realist foreign policy position, kind of like CBD mentioned. I am more there myself. I think our attempt at regime changes are bad. But, if a democracy , say it was not Israel in the ME, But an England or France, was surrounded by bloodthirsty enemies who attacked it, I would want to support it. We kind of did that in WWII. Initially , before pearl harbor. I do not know what Guyana contributed to US economy, but I know it is being invaded by Venezuela - Iran's partner in crime, and I think we need to offer help there.

Posted by: runner at December 07, 2023 12:20 PM (V13WU)

388 Americans should support Israel privately. America sucks at fighting wars in the middle East under ridiculous rules of engagement and getting the DOD to lord over the IDF would only interfere with the mission.

389 150,000 Russian tanks was the reason we were supposed to surrender Europe in the 70's. Don't doubt they ever existed.

But, I understand. My dad and his buddies were out in front of Elsenborn Ridge in Dec 1944, and to a man they thought they were cut up by King Tigers. When some historian pointed out 50 years later that there were only a handful of King Tigers on the whole front, the division newspaper editor said to me that once you'd seen one King Tiger, every German tank looked like a King Tiger -- for the rest of your life.

393 It's almost as if we're being given another chance to see if we can get it right.

Or maybe to get it wronger (blow the whole world up so we can start over with new species.) As it stands we're still the same ol' a*holes doing the same a*hole things with those same ol' a*holes in the same a*hole places. Thus we wind up in the same a*hole spot.

Time to remove those choices? Seems we can't count on Meter of Doom.

Not even Sun stunning Solar Flare doesn't do much of anything. We really need to get things moving and not sitting around waiting for Mother Nature to start something.

395 I used to be a neocon. Then I noticed that neocons did not want to block the borders. So I realized that their avowed goals were not their actual goals.

What's good for America?

Lock the borders, kick out the Muzzies, and pretty much all immigrants. Rebuild our industry. Get oil going in America, and nuke power. Build chip fabs so that we can slowly disengage from Taiwan. Stop all foreign aid.

We won't do that. It makes too much sense, and it makes it harder for grifters.

Posted by: Eric2 at December 07, 2023 10:01 PM (t7mrP)

396 CBD and his fellow travelers in the comments section are why elections don't matter as the interventionists will always be in power. You rant everyday against the globalist agenda, and then you turn around and give a full throated defense of American involvement overseas we'd find in 2005 National Review.

The sad fact is if a Republican president got us into the Ukraine war, this blog and most of these commentators would still be supporting that war purely out of partisan instinct. You smear isolationists as anti semites while the so-called responsible adults in charge of our foreign policy have so poisoned America's image that the rest of the world honestly sees is as the imperial forces of repression. Maybe a little isolationist policy would go a long way.

Posted by: Eric at December 08, 2023 12:12 PM (4aCYj)

397 I'm not proposing "abandoning our closest ally and the only functional democracy in the middle east," but I do worry that we're going to get neck-deep in another proxy war over there and I don't want that, either.

I think the best thing we can do for Israel is to just let them be. Let them conduct their maneuvers against Hamas without interference, or without so much as a comment from President shit-for-brains. Their right to sovereign defense is just as valid as any country's. But that doesn't mean we have to put American lives on the line or dump untold billions of dollars of taxpayer money down a hole.
