Saturday Morning Coffee Break & Prayer Revival

11 2523coffee.jpg

Good morning, I hope you all survived Thursday's festivities. Hard to believe this is the last Coffee Break of November.

***

Before we enter the Prayer Revival, just a few friendly reminders. (Rulz for those of you in Nimrod, MN)

1) This is an open thread. Feel free to lurk, opine and/or bloviate away. Just remember rule #2
2) Play well with others.
3) Running with sharp objects is frowned upon. However, we are not the boss of you.
4) Have a nice weekend or don't. Free will and free choice.

***

Thanks to Annie for the following...........

AoSHQ Weekly Prayer List

Please submit any prayer requests to me, “Annie’s Stew” at apaslo atsign hotmail dot com. Prayer requests are generally removed after four weeks unless we receive an update.

Prayer Requests:

10/20 – SB asked for prayers for his mother. She is in end-of-life care now. Prayers for his father are needed as well.
11/18 Update – Mom passed peacefully with her family around her. Continued prayers for SB’s father are appreciated.

10/21 – Sugar Plum Fairy asked for prayers for her dad, Mindful Webworker, as he has been pretty sick for the last few days. Prayers for recovery to full health and strength, and wisdom for her mom to help him would be appreciated.
10/28 Update – Mindful Webworker had an emergency surgery and is recovering well. They are not sure what happened, and tests are underway, but so far his prognosis is good. He is in good spirits and is recovering well. She sends thanks from the whole family for the prayers, and a special thanks to Muldoon for the limerick, which brought laughter to some dark days. Please keep praying, and thanks and glory to God for the doctors saving dad’s life.
11/18 Update – He is scheduled to have surgery the Tuesday after Thanksgiving, but for now, he is out of the hospital and home, where the coffee is good! Milady Jo could use some prayers, as she will be getting hip replacement surgery in Dec.

10/26 – Cybersmythe has been laid off for the third time in 15 months and asks for prayers and good wishes.

10/26 – Diogenes sent thanks for the prayers for his daughter. The surgery on a brain tumor went well and, while it’ll be a while before they know the final results, the docs were very optimistic.

10/28 – FenelonSpoke thanked the people who prayed for her township open space committee to buy land from her church. It has been approved. Now they just have to have enough money to last until this is all settled.
11/4 – She thanks God that the township voted to buy their land at the church.

10/28 - ME asked for prayers. He has been unemployed for nearly two years. He isn’t even getting interviews anymore; there have been hardly any in the last 6 months. The longer he is unemployed, the harder it seems to even get an interview. Maybe with the Lord’s blessing he could finally land a job before his savings completely run out. Which is right around the corner.

11/4 – FenelonSpoke prayed that if it was God’s will, there is a might showing for the conservative School Board candidates.

11/4 – Half Dozen sent thanks to the Horde for the prayers, and gave an update on his son’s health. He had a large tumor removed from the center of his brain stem in March. Then there was a month of rehab in the hospital, and on-going therapy to re-learn how to walk. He also had 6 weeks of radiation and chemo, just to be sure. He has returned to work part-time. Progress has been slow but steady. Small things wear him out quickly. His paralyzed vocal cord still has not recovered, so he speaks in a rough whisper, and his voice gives out before the end of each day. Next week, they will all be walking in the city’s 5K with him. It will be exhausting, but a good day nonetheless.

11/4 – Oddbob asked for prayers for his granddaughter. Without going into details, please pray hard for baby E. Thank you.
11/18 Update – Baby E is doing much better, but please keep praying. She and her parents (and grandparents) will need them for the long haul.

11/4 – Creeper asked for prayers again for his friend “Q”. We had prayed for Q, who had a bad back, and then had a temporary nerve stimulator put in, which helped tremendously. They installed the permanent stimulator last week, and it was a disaster. He woke up in excruciating pain, running a low fever, and vomiting. A CT scan found an ileus. It seems to have been caused by the stimulator, and if it doesn’t clear on its own, he will have to have it removed.

11/9 – JediArashi asked for prayers for his health and the meddling government situation related to pain medications. There are shortages already, and the DEA is “recommending” a reduction of 7.9%. He is a chronic pain patient and is terrified.

11/10 – Tonypete asked for prayers for Deb, Ben, and their little boy. Deb suffered a premature emergency birth of her long-prayed-for second baby. He did not survive. They are all heartbroken.

11/10 – Commissar of Plenty and Lysenko stuff sent his thanks for the prayers – that he didn’t even ask for yet! He had good news from the doctor yesterday. He will only have to have one surgery, not multiple.

11/14 – Jewells sent an update. She got the news that her cancer is progressing, and they are stopping the current treatment. They want to switch to monoclonal therapy as well as chemo. Prayers are appreciated, that the new drugs will work, and that the cancer has not spread.

11/15 – That Northerlurker what lurkd needs help. He commented that he is in the worst financial situation of his life, but the people in his town are reaching out to him to help. He added that the only thing worse than financial stress is asking for help.

11/18 – Tonypete asked for prayers for the repose of the soul of B. He took his own life suddenly and without any apparent reason. He is greatly missed by his family, his classmates, and his teachers. He was an 8th grader.

11/18 – Hadrian the Seventh thanked everyone for the prayers for his sister. She came through her heart valve surgery with no problems and is recovering nicely.

11/18 – DMB had a job offer in Sarasota, FL that was withdrawn. God, in His providence, had better plans for DMB. He has now relocated to Ft. Lauderdale, and is still unpacking boxes, but started his new job this week! Praise be to God!

11/19 – FenelonSpoke requested prayers for a 2 month old baby named Lillian, who has a UTI and possible meningitis. Please pray for healing.

11/21 – Paul asked for prayers for his brother Paul. Paul is very ill, and gets worse every day. He has had a long, painful, fight with congenital issues with his lymphatic system. He’s only 57 and deserved better. Please pray for a miracle and for his soul. Paul thanks the people here who make his day every day, but recently it hasn’t been enough to overcome his sorrow.

11/22 – Fox2! requested prayers for his newborn great-nephew, J, who is in the NICU. He turned blue overnight. Please pray for him and his family.

For submission guidelines and other relevant info, please contact Annie's Stew, who is managing the prayer list. You can contact her at apaslo at-sign hotmail dot com. If you see a prayer request posted in a thread comment, feel free to copy and paste it and e-mail it to Annie's Stew. She tries to keep up with the requests in the threads, but she's not here all of the time, so she may not see it unless you e-mail it to her. Please note: Prayer requests are generally removed after four weeks or so unless we receive an update.

2 Corinthians 4:8-9
We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed; we are perplexed, but not in despair, persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed.

27 I would like to ask prayers for R-someone in my congregation. His dementia is making him angry and verbally abusive, which is exceptionally hard for his daughters. His wife died several years ago. I guess prayers that rough places be made smooth for this dear family.

It occurs to me that as a cop, a former cop, he'd be a target regardless. I also admit it's equally likely someone in a seat of state or federal power directed that attack to happen.

I pretty much grew up on Community Coffee. They had a chain of their own coffee shops here --, CC's, it was called. The Sniffle Scare knocked those out, I guess. Flavored coffees to me usually taste kind of cloying, but I'll bet CC's would be better than most of them.

---
The issue (as I'm sure you are aware), is that once one decides that the Church Fathers were wrong about one thing, all things become subject to discussion.

The Church of England is an excellent example of just how quickly this process can accelerate. Ordination of women was highly contentious, and to square that circle, the Anglican Communion originally made special arrangements so that no one was compelled to receive sacraments by a priestess, nor (when women bishops were created), would a priest be an unwilling subordinate. Having opened the door a crack, within a generation all of the tenets of the faith are now under revision, hence the schism - which was driven not by the membership, but the hierarchy.

O.k. but maybe it would have been a good idea to address the two issues (homosexuality and pedophiles )and the ordination of women separately. However, I try to generally stay away from this topic because nobody's mind is changed and it tendsto bring out the "You're an abomination to God" folks." No; You didn't say that. You're a nice man. We have reached a point where layfolk think they understand Leviticus better than God that is bad enough, that the people who understand Leviticus better than God are neither Jewish nor Christian is the piece d'la resistance.

I am the furthest thing in the world from a literalist, but I am an internet nobody....having the Pope and Church leaders join in the mass formation psychosis is deadly for the faith and leads to having your congregation become defacto theme park employees ala the UK.

154 About quitting smoking, FWIW husband has not smoked in the 35 years we've been married but he did previously. He went through hypnosis and was able to quit cold turkey and not even want another cigarette. Don't know if that's an option for the smokers around here, but it might help support other methods.

162 Anyway you can quit cigarettes is good. I was a heavy smoker, 4 to 5 packs of Winston or Marlboro a day. (I was often working long hours back then and you could smoke at work.) That was over 40 years ago. I quit cold turkey, not because of health matters but when the price topped a dollar a pack I realized what I was spending a year and every frugal (read: cheap) bone in my body rebelled. I never picked up a cigarette again. It wasn't easy. I was a miserable SOB for a few months as I got the bad stuff out of my system but worth it.

BTW, I used to get bronchitis every year when I smoked cigarettes. Haven't had a case since I quit and my lungs are clear. My pipe smoking hobby (you don't inhale pipe smoke) is completely different for health concerns.

166 Not trying to encourage anyone to smoke, however-

if you really enjoy the nicotine addiction, just take up vaping.

You can get your hit of nicotine without all the cancer and other anti-health chemicals at the same time.

And if you want to quit all together, you can just walk your levels of nicotine down until it easy/easier.

Never smoke so I don't understand the need, but that seems the smartest way to do things.

Quit 'cold turkey' in Feb 1972 at the age of 24. Was up to 2 packs a day, especially after serving in the army for two years. I went through lots of Lifesaver mints (still use Breathsavers!), but it was, for me, the only way to knock the habit. Most of my friends did it the same way. Never went back, and as I look back, saved a ton of money over the years. One friend, couldn't quit. He died of lung cancer in October. Dealt with COPD over the past few years. Now, he's gone.

Then he got skin, prostrate and throat cancer, the latter requiring removing tissue from his esophagus, making him prone to vomiting. The last ten years of his life life were spend battling secondary sicknesses, and because he was an avid sportsman, he'd go deer hunting and come back with pneumonia. I think he was trying to die from that, and I'm not sure what it was that did him in, but his end was pretty awful.

Yes, and it's not like conforming to the world is the path to bringing people into pews, either. It's pretty much a death blow to whoever adopts it.

Still, sinners want to sin, and they want to do so convincing themselves that everything is fine. This is why we have to constantly affirm that sin isn't sinful.

But no nicotine anxiety because the vape juice had 2 pack a day level nicotine Started getting my taste buds back right away then slowly reduced the nicotine level to 0 over 3 years the trick for me was finding a vape juice taste that i liked also saved a lot of money and sinus issues decreased

222 Sharon,
Not that my opinion means anything, but I think you should get your CCL. Better to have it and not use it than be denied it in another year or two because the powers that be decide you're no longer worthy. And carjackings are a real thing.

You'd just have to figure out how to practice shooting from a seated position, like you're in a car. Or figure out how to open the door, get out, stand, aim and fire. It's a LOT! But your basics are sound and your shots are on target, so.......

I would aways ask in diesel mechanic schools why they couldn't containt the whole system. Diesel fuel, a catalyst and DEF in the same chamber. It seems to me a huge waste the way they do it.
Injection, compression, detonation, post injection, exhaust, atomized DEF (65% water btw), mixed, catalyzed, expelled as water vapor and nitrogen.
The heat generated in that process is unreal.
Heat is wasted energy and they intentionally make it.
Always seemed counterproductive to me.
Then the cost..

234 Certainly the Catholic Church (and Protestants) have "changed with the times". The end of selling indulgences, for example.

The questions are ... does the change get closer to God's will, or further away.

Also, what parts of scripture pertain mostly to the culture of the time, more than exact doctrine? For example, certainly older times were very "male authority dominant", for multiple reasons. Power and testosterone were perhaps more essential in rougher times, before firearms or computers tended to even the score a bit.

Jesus said render unto Caesar the things which are Caesars, imo because it was (basically) suicide to go against state authority. Yet our founders (righteously) went against their British government to form a more perfect union/nation.

Wrong doctrine must be corrected, but there is also cultural dogma that was only tied "making God's will functional in a "broken" culture. That cultural element can be "updated". But that process does get a little more murky at times.

Like, God rested on the 7th day, why did Christians switch to Sunday, the first day? I forget, but think it was a cultural thing. And why is it Sun Day anyway?

237 When I was in middle school and high school, I was given a diagnosis of asthma. Well, it wasn't technically asthma, but hyper-reactive lungs. So, inhaler, often needed steroids to recover from respiratory illness, etc. I was doing band (and marched), which actually helped.

I went to college and it got a bit better and when I moved out and was on my own, my lungs cleared right up. When I enlisted, they gave the hairy eye to my medical records, but when I crushed it on a PFT, they were fine with me joining (the recruiting shortfall didn't hurt).

In retrospect, what was going on was my mom and stepdad smoked like chimneys, a pack a day each, fully indoors, ash tray on the coffee table. I'd go home on weekend and people assumed I was a smoker.

Once I got away from it, I was fine, and I've gone from pretty common sinus infections to rarely getting them. I got sick in October and it was the first time since 2019. Still haven't had the Rona, either.

239 Way back when gay marriage was being debated I used to play chess with people from my club and one guy was this typical libertarian type who argued gay marriage was no big deal. He also made the argument that times have changed and no reason not to change with it. When others countered that marriage has been an institution between only a man and woman for thousands of years a small percentage of people shouldn’t be able to just change that established way of doing things. His reply was always ‘why not’.

Later I had opportunity to play him and right at the start I moved my pawn 3 spaces . He of course said you can’t do that and I said ‘why not?’ . I assume you can tell where I went with the rest of the conversation and won’t bore you with it. Unfortunately it did not result in changing his mind but it was fun making him contradict himself .

Not so much a prediction as a statement of where things stand today. Joe isn't going to get younger and smarter over the next year.

I also remember Mitch refusing to give any money to Trump aligned Senators and the same thing happening in the House. Still took the House so it's not like it was some sort of blue wave. 252 COFFEE & TEA STAINS ... The easiest way for me to remove these from mugs, carafes, urns, etc., is to use powdered dishwasher detergent (not pods) and hot water (boiling water if the vessel I'm cleaning is tolerable) ... I also found it best to make up a large batch of solution, allow the hot water to fully dissolve the powder, then gently pour some solution (from the top) into whatever vessels I want to clean ... I do allow the solution to sit for a bit, but am careful not to let it sit too long in metal vessels ... In fact, for my stainless steel stock pot (which I use all summer to make iced tea), I heat the water right in the pot, add a rounded teaspoon of dishwasher powder, simmer 5 minutes, pour out, then rub with a nylon scrub pad (with very little effort).

If we've learned anything, it's that snark and mockery can be fun, but are ultimately ineffective. Using clear moral language - which we gave up to the left - is much more effective.

Call evil what it is. The more strident we get, the more scared they become. That's why they're trying to burn churches and intimidate Catholics in particular. The Church is starting to find her voice again.

Remember when Catholics held an effective veto over movies? Weren't the movies better? We should get back to that.

291 269 That fraud, Andrew Gillym, only lost to DeSantis by about 30,000 votes in 2018. Florida greatly benefited from DeSantis, who was re-elected by a margin of millions of votes
Posted by: JM in /Ill -- Behold the Manchurian Candidate at November 25, 2023 10:48 AM (IBDwy)

I think most of us believe that the difference in margins was the amount of voter fraud that DeSantis was able to clean up. It's instructive to look back at Gillym, an unaccomplished drug addict, an empty scarecrow for the power brokers pushing him, who has completely vanished now that it's obvious he's no longer useful . That's who they wanted to give the Governor's office to.

303 But I was also hinting at some of the Sun worship and other idolatry that has permeated many of the "traditions of men" that are mixed into most institutional "Christianity". Traditions can be good though, and tend to bind us together (or used to control us).

---
Idolatry is where you infuse a spirit into a man-made object and seek favors from it by offering worship. The spirit "indwells" the object, facilitating communication and supplication. This is why when "the gods" failed them, ancients often smashed the idols in rage.

That's different from appreciating the beauty of God's creation and celebrating it with art that elevates the mind to holy things. The notion that images of saints or the Blessed Virgin Mary are somehow wrong essentially cedes all artistry to secular pursuits, with the result that our minds turn from Godly things and focus instead on This World.

We've been slowly transforming the aesthetic of our home to include more sacred images and as a result, God has a more active role in our daily life.

There was an early episode (Deathwalker?) where an immortality device is discovered, but it runs on draining the lives of others. Much talk about who should get it, and the Vorlons blow it up, saying "You are not ready for immortality."

Subsequently, Dr. Franklin is musing with Ivanova about what we could accomplish with longer, healthier lives, and she replies "Nothing, we'd just make the same mistakes, fall into the same traps." He accuses her of being a pessimist.

They can be looked at as art, but in churches are usually tied to doctrine (right or wrong doctrine). To the extent they are only art magnifying right doctrine, awesome. But many traditions are clearly from pagan origins, as is much of the doctrine.

As with the founding of the USA, "we must hang together, or surely we will hang separately" Franklin said. There is power in staying together, yet the old testament showed us there was often only a remnant that were really the faithful.

Evil takes over large institutions and wears them as skinsuits. YMMV.

350 People are certainly free to believe what they want. But I never understood the attraction of Old Norse paganism and Odin, Thor and Freyr. It's demonstrably borne of ignorance and built on beliefs framed by the narrowness of what the people knew at the time. It was shed for Christianity not as a matter of conquest but for good reason. It died off because its basis was demonstrably false.

365 "solar panel is still producing them. Were are they going?"

A tech guy told me some panels can produce over 100% rated output, as when snow reflects sun onto them. idk ...

But as for where the electrons go once capacity is reached ... a charge controller surely stops accepting at some point, so same as electrons in the wire to a light bulb, they stop flowing once the switch is off. They meet a "resistance" so they cannot flow. But they energize the wires up to a max voltage (VOC ?).

A real physics guy or electrician can correct me.

They are being bled off in all likelihood by your battery controller.

You can run a lot of equipment to the load trickle off of "useless solar" from a battery standpoint.

I had a lot of fun with Lad Olafson last summer setting up a solar array feeding an AGM battery.

367 They can be looked at as art, but in churches are usually tied to doctrine (right or wrong doctrine). To the extent they are only art magnifying right doctrine, awesome. But many traditions are clearly from pagan origins, as is much of the doctrine.

Posted by: illiniwek at November 25, 2023 11:12 AM (Cus5s)

The pagan gods are fallen angels, which is why their traditions and teachings often echo what is in the Bible. The distance of the fall varied by spirit.

Thus: you can say honoring one's ancestors is pagan, but it seems to be universal (until now, of course). That shows it is part of Natural Law. I believe Paul remarked on how some of the pagans seemed to have a better grasp of virtuous living than the early Christians - God was speaking to them, too.

I will also note that the "pagan influence" is also a function of Liberal Christianity's teachings in the 19th Century, which held that tried to use SCIENCE! to explain faith, and decode the Bible. Thus, pagan stuff was all over the place because the highest evolution of faith was naturally German Protestantism.

369 I seem to recall Toyota is heavily researching Ammonia powered vehicles instead of battery.
Posted by: Tonypete at November 25, 2023 10:10 AM (qoGsy)

Ammonia is an idiotic choice for motor fuel. It's a poisonous, choking gas, for one, if it escapes the tank. It can kill you dead. And there are no ammonia wells. It takes energy to make it, using natural gas as a source material. Gasoline and Diesel fuel already exist as fractions of crude oil, and the energy required to refine them to market quality is far less than that needed to manufacture ammonia.

371 " I believe Paul remarked on how some of the pagans seemed to have a better grasp of virtuous living than the early Christians - God was speaking to them, too." Posted by: Ace-Endorsed Author A.H. Lloyd

I can't recall that verse, but yes, Paul spent great effort trying to correct wrong practice, which quickly became wrong doctrine (in the early church), and before he died he said very few had remained faithful to right doctrine. ...

Then somehow the Council of Nicea creed became fundamental "scripture" for (eventually) even the Protestants (or you were cancelled). So they (Lutherans) made us recite that creed to clean up (dirty up) the original scripture.

Thanks for the historical references.

373 People are certainly free to believe what they want.

It's gaining more popularity because the gods are supposedly more masculine and warlike. No dying meekly on a cross!

There's a certain amount of D&D mentality in the younger generations - you pick your god, follow their rules, and are judged on that basis. The notion that no, there actually is a revealed God and that the pagans were rebel angels does not occur to them.

It's just like the "theologians" who find hidden goddesses in the Old Testament and claim "the patriarchy" overwrote it, but was too stupid to do the job properly.

377 Tea & Covfefe Staines, a tip for the cleaning thereof, via my fawlty memory, via "Hints from Heloise", circa late 1980s.

But, I've used it. I still use it, and it works.

Fill the vessel brim full, then drop in one (for a simple cup/mug, or more Effervescent Denture Cleaning Tablets. Up to a half-dozen for a full sized teapot.

Leave overnight.

We use this method to it's full effect, here at Casa New Dawn. Oh, and I had fun demonstrating it to the very Irish, very dedicated hot-tea drinker Herself New Dawn, who passed it along to her sister and niece in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Where, they follow this practice, to this day.

No, it wasn't "somehow," it was part of a very long series of discussions, and if you are so inclined, you can read about it.

The Catholic and Orthodox churches do not limit themselves to scripture as Protestants do, they also look at a much larger body of contemporary writings which give additional context.

382 "...render unto Caesar the things which are Caesars, imo because it was...suicide to go against state authority..."

Maybe. Consider also that the Lord said (believers) were essentially, "sheep among wolves" and that we were to "make disciples of all nations," (not make politicians...though some G-dfearers are called to fill that occupation, as Adrian Rodgers said, if not us, then who?)

Apostle Paul said "Let every person be subject to the governing authorities," the exception being if that authority blatantly contradicts scripture, as Peter stated in Acts, "It is necessary to obey G-d rather than men." Or, an Old Testament example, "those who decree unrighteousness as law..." and "make a man a transgressor (because of) a spoken word..."

A perfect description of current "hate speech" and "misinformation" edicts that we're all forced to embrace for Fundamental Transformation.
