Gen Z Employee: How Am I To See My Friends, Or Even Eat Enough Food to Stay Alive, When I Am Working an Incredible 40 Hours Per Week?!!

Generation Z wants to retire at age 21.

This country is doomed. You know that, right?

A Gen Z employee lamented in an essay published by Business Insider that her day job at the YMCA is, while rewarding, still "difficult" since it takes up too much of her time.

Piper Hansen graduated from college in spring 2023 and while she has only been working full time for a few months, she said it is depressing to have the 9-to-5 schedule.

"How can I make sure I'm eating well and seeing my friends and taking time for my hobbies?" she asked. "How am I supposed to fit my whole life into a 9-to-5 work schedule?"

Hansen explained that she wakes up around 7 a.m. for her 10-to-7 job, but by the time she gets home, she barely has time to walk her dog and make dinner before it gets dark.

"Then I have to make sure the coffee pot is ready for the next morning, and I have something to take for lunch the next day," she wrote. "I'm home for just a few hours before I get ready to go to bed by 11 p.m."

Maybe there aren't as many Girlbosses as the Media Propaganda Complex assures us there are.

...

In the TikTok, the young college graduate questioned how people are supposed to make time for friends or to date.

"I want to shower, eat my dinner and go to sleep," she said. "I don't have time or energy to cook my dinner either. Like, I don't have energy to work out, like that's out the window. Like, I'm so upset. Nothing to do with my job at all, but just like the 9-to-5 schedule in general is crazy."

...

The 23-year-old said it is "wild" how "there's only time to work and go home to rest before work starts again," arguing, "That's not how humans are supposed to live."

I mean, I do get the general complaint, but...

This letter from "Piper" was written in response to the TikTok by a young Gen Z woman complaining that with a 40 hour work week plus commuting time, there just was not a lot of the day left for her friends and dating life.

In the upload, Brielle, who asked that Insider only use her first name to protect her privacy, said that it was her first job out of college and that she worked from the office, which meant she had to commute into the city even though it took "forever" because she couldn't afford to live there.

She said she got on her train at 7:30 a.m. and didn't get home until "6:15 earliest," at which point, she said, she had no time or energy to cook dinner or work out. The 9-5 schedule and the commute wiped out her days, she said.

At the start of the video, the TikToker said she was "probably just being so dramatic and annoying" and acknowledged her situation could be worse. She said she could be working even longer hours but questioned how people were supposed to make time for friends or to date.

"I don't have time for anything, and I'm, like, so stressed out," she said toward the end of the video.

The upload appeared to resonate; it received 1.2 million views and more than 7,300 comments. Many wrote they could relate to the situation, as they shared that they, too, had limited time for their own personal lives and found the repetitive routine difficult to deal with.

"The 40 hour work week is beyond outdated and your feelings are totally valid," one viewer wrote.

I think someone lied to all of these non-Girlbosses about how AWESOME and FUN and EMPOWERING actual work is. And I think the videos released by non-Girlbosses "working" in the tech industry by drinking lattes all day is also causing a lot of bitterness in people forced to actually work in real jobs.

That girl has been laid off. If you're being paid to waste time at work all day, you should probably keep your good fortune secret from your bosses, rather than bragging about it on TikTok.

There's a whole trend of "Lazy Girl Jobs." The idea is to work very little, get a decent but not huge salary, and avoid all work stress.

I mean, it's not a bad plan. Non-ambitious people do have every right to seek work that suits them.

But the pay she says you can get for a "lazy girl job," $60-80,000, might make most girls stressed, as they're required to actually work for a lot less.

A self-declared "Lazy Girl Job Girlboss" had to warn her fellow Lazy Girls not to post about their Lazy Girl Jobs on TikTok.

If you watch tech girls bragging on TikTok about their jobs basically being Kindergarten Birthday Parties all day long, you might start to get resentful about the 40 hour workweek, too.

People "curate" their lives on TikTok and social media to brag. They create a false impression of how great their lives are. It's all fake.

But they do this because a lot of people believe them. They really believe you can make $80,000 per year doing practically nothing, and so anyone working harder for less is a chump.

Interesting, while the TikTok girls brag about how little work they do, the TikTok bros brag about the ludicrous amount of work (and gym training) they claim they do. This guy is parodying them.

9 This to some degree ties into the end of marriage and stay-at home moms.

Basically the guy could concentrate on working outside the home, the woman works on things in and around the home, and you've got an efficient division of labor. The person traveling in order to work wasn't also cooking.

You do kind of watch your life pass you by with the 9-5 schedule making eh money.

You make enough to live and pay your bills. Maybe you can retire someday.

Most of your waking hours are spent going to work, working, coming back from work, cooking dinner, and maybe an hour or two to fuck off before bed.

I work a lazy girl job and I'm fine with that. The brass ring is for suckers. I have a comfortable low six figure job and so does my wife. I probably spend three or four hours coding, one to two hours in meetings, random time in code reviews and helping others out when they can't figure out an issue. I have no commute and fairly low mental strain and stress most of the time.

I get time to work out and at least 2.5 hours per night with family. Then I have many hours with family on the weekend.

I'm happy with all this. I'm never going to be a multi millionaire. I'm never going to have the swanky company car or high class business trips. I don't care.

Ummm, yes it is. You work in order to live. In order to consume, you must produce. How rich you are is, in part, a reflection of how much "free time" you can muster.

The average American can usually muster between 118 and 128 "free" hours per week out of 168 hours total, all while still living with a roof over his head and food on the table and surrounded by electrical appliances as well as possessing furniture and clothing and often even a car. Yes, many of those free hours - 56 of them according to standards - are spent sleeping. That is still fewer than half of his free hours.

In Red China, the number of "free" hours is only between 84 and 96 before sleep. In Europe, the number is higher but not by much and they live less well - smaller homes, fewer appliances, fewer cars, fewer clothes.

Actually, searching 'supposed' produces 4 instances. Here's reality for you kids, 'Supposed' is in the psyche of the supposer. It is not a law of nature. Life has no regard whatsoever for your 'supposes'. If your expectations are built upon your 'supposes' then brace up for a lot of disappointment. Prediction: One crisis of rising espectations after another.

There's another piece to this, depending on where and what. I, for example, *was* expected to get part-time jobs when I was a teenager. I couldn't, not for a long time. People wouldn't hire kids. Technically, I could have started working at 15. Nobody would even give me an application. At 16, I would sometimes be given an app but never interviewed. I didn't have my first part time job until I was 18, but not for lack of trying. A lot of companies just didn't want to hire anyone under 18. I don't know if it was a liability thing or what, but the doors were just *closed* until I hit age of majority.

In another 10 or so years when I am hopefully retired, I really wonder if today's youth can do the job I and others before them were able to do?

Less stress with two eyes/sets of hands and you don't have to worry about how you're EVER going to have time to date someone while also working/commuting 60 hours a week.

200 One other bigger point that gets missed in all this...

Everyone wants stuff - goods and services...smart phones, food, massages, heating oil, whatever.

The ONLY way ANY of that becomes available is for someone to do work. If no one works, there is no stuff. If people work less, there is less stuff.

So...do you really want us *all* to have less stuff and more time? Because the complaint seems to be "I want to work less and have everyone ELSE work more"

I don't know how that works but I assume it's a lot like playing pro football.

Lots of kids throw the football in the backyard, then 1% go on to play in 7th grade. 1% of those play varsity ball in high school, and then 1% of THEM get to play on college teams. And then, you guessed it, 1% of those players get to turn pro.

I bet there are millions of "influencers" out there, but the ones making money are related to the people controlling the flow of information or the product. There are probably a few unassociated whores that make it big, but you could probably count them on one hand.

This used to be called "putting in your time." Everyone goes through it, but many are surprised by it. My first "real job" was 13-hour overnight shifts in a windowless operations vault in a basement. I hated it. Talk about "no life," because you lose a day on either end trying to get back to human hours. I did it for a few years and gained a lot of skills and experience.

Then dayshift work, 11 hour days, five days per week for another year or two. Then dayshift work on a "normal" 9-hour day with about 10 hours per week structural overtime. Then closer to "normal" 40 or 48-hour weeks from then on, barring crunch times.

But most people have to go through that at first because most new workers have fairly little value. To get paid enough, you work the bad hours or a lot of hours or both. Then you can do better later. Nobody seems to have told this girl that.

219 200 One other bigger point that gets missed in all this...

258 Consequences of the “pandemic” 1) white collar America awarded itself a free, extended vacation under the guise of “working from home” while blue collar and service workers had to go to work like always. 2) corporate bean counters during the “pandemic” realized they could make more money if they convinced their working slobs that half the staff working twice as hard was now the “new normal”. Hussle culture is dead. The “pandemic” killed it. I don’t fault younger workers for seeing through the hypocrisy.

As I understand it, there were a lot of tech adjacent jobs that did not require coding ability, like HR and diversity and corporate culture manager, that paid quite well and let young women say they were in tech when they really weren't. Now the hardish times are coming and those jobs are gone and the girls making 130k for nothing are learning that they were never in tech.

Me: "Well then, you need to decide what you'll do when management tells you you're going to that other shift, because I was told I'd be training you for that."

This is why the coming decline in housing prices is going to be a good thing for a whole lot of people. The monthly nut will remain about the same thanks to rising interest rates, but the price fall means you need a lot less for a down payment. Every $1k in price decline is a reduction of $200 for the down payment. It adds up, and adds up fast.

It is the silver lining to a declining housing market.

358 I think Becky Quick gets it right - the worst jobs are the ones where you have so little to do that you keep looking at your watch (I'm old). Great jobs are challenging, frustrating, nerve-wracking, but it's 2 hours past "quitting time" and you didn't even notice the time going by.

I would also suggest that those in less interesting jobs throw themselves into the work a little more. They are going to be there for eight hours anyway - why not spend the time helping customers instead of avoiding them? Those eight hours are going to go by much faster.

Fine. I'll address it so I can quote me.

About a year and a half ago and I got a new job in which I knew for a fact that internet use was monitored. Commenting on the phone is annoying. So I stepped back. Also I was spending time with that whore twitter.

And then serveral months ago, people decided to spread the absolute lie that I changed my mind on "gay rights" and I got my feelings deeply hurt.

Let me be very clear.

I do not support gay marriage. I think men cannot become women and vice versa. I cannot believe that adults have to be told not to do sex stuff in front of kids. Drag shows in front of minors is not something that should occur. I cannot believe adults have to be told not to show porn to fifth graders.

I, like any other human being, do not appreciate being called a pedophile.

415 Even though my primary path was music I made sure I learned a shit ton of different trades. I knew music can be unstable and unpredictable, so I had a plan B and C, and D, and on and on. These snowflakes don't get that. You need to acquire many skills and it takes time, but you gotta start somewhere, and thats usually at the bottom. If you like what you do its not really work, so pick something and try to be the best at it.

417 I work a lazy girl job and I'm fine with that.

Ugh, nightmares of carrying the on-call pager (as a software developer when computer operations went south).

For many years I worked 80-hour weeks, and mostly what I accomplished was avoiding life and setting unrealistic expectations from management.

A co-worker once told me, when I was bragging about my work ethic (long weeks, come in on weekends, etc.): "Most workaholics like alcoholics, they're running away from something." That really hit home since both of my parents were alcoholics ... whom I pitied.

447 Gen Z wants to retire at 21...and live off their Boomer grandparents and Gen X parents. Or at least tax the bejeebers out of older generations and get a sweet Universal Basic Income.

As a late Boomer whose Dad lived through the Depression and was the first in his family to go to college, worked his way through it, then went to med school, I can't even relate to this mentality. Let's just say in our house the ethos was "to whom much is given, much is expected." I didn't have to work my way through college or med school like Dad, but I never forgot that I'd been given a HUGE gift. I'm still grateful to my parents.

And complaining about waking up at 0700 for a 9-5 job?? Yeah, I WISH I could sleep in 'til 7, and get off at 5. Let's not even talk about night call...

I decided that it was as good a time as any to retire, so I did. I'm enjoying it but I also miss working.

I put in 52 hours/week.

463 There's a whole trend of "Lazy Girl Jobs." The idea is to work very little, get a decent but not huge salary, and avoid all work stress.

Oh, I have one of those jobs, *now*, after 22 years in the Navy at often 80-120 hours a week. It's mostly WFH, isn't particularly demanding, and even has occasional travel to Spain. Pays well enough ($70k/yr). I earned being able to work to live after breaking myself living to work.

464 Well, when 90% of these 20-something fetuses want to be "influencers" when they grow up, it's not hard to grasp that working an 8-hour day is oppressive.

Same ones complaining about "colonizing" who couldn't get the Mayflower out of port; same ones laughing "okay, boomer!" at a person who knows how to figure things out without googling it; same ones who claim to know what's what but can't define what a woman is and think Bin Laden's anti-American screed and Hamas' slaughter were justifiable.

Count me unimpressed.
