The YouTuber Mr. Beast decided to bring clean water to 500,000 people in Africa who had none. You might think, "Surely there's no way the left could attack someone for sparing half a million people of cholera and child deaths." He's white, so you're wrong:

American YouTuber MrBeast's latest video, in which he says he built 100 wells across Africa, has drawn a complex response online since it was published on Saturday. Some Kenyan activists and journalists said he has spotlighted the failures of the Kenyan government, while MrBeast, whose real name is Jimmy Donaldson, anticipates that he will be "canceled" following the reaction. The new wells will provide clean drinking water for up to 500,000 people in Cameroon, Kenya, Somalia, Uganda and Zimbabwe, Donaldson said, while an accompanying fundraiser to support local water aid organizations had raised more than $300,000 by Monday morning. Donaldson's 10-minute video also showed him donating supplies to Kenyan schools, such as new furniture, soccer balls, computers, whiteboards and projectors; building a bridge across a river to safely connect a village with the local schools and hospital; and donating bikes to a village in Zimbabwe to help children get to school.

Saran Kaba Jones, founder and CEO of FACE Africa, an organization working to improve water infrastructure and sanitation in sub-Saharan Africa, told CNN: "I've been doing this for 15 years, but we've been struggling to continue the work because funding, awareness, and advocacy all take work." And then, she added, "overnight, this person comes along, who happens to be a white male figure with a huge platform, and all of a sudden, he gets all of the attention. It's kind of frustrating, but it's also understanding the nature of how the world is." She praised Donaldson for shining the spotlight on the need for clean water supply but warned that "the issue is sustainability. It's one thing to go in and install the well, it's another thing for us to go back to three, four, or five years from now, and see if that well is still functional."
Kaba Jones told CNN that FACE Africa works in areas where "60% of wells are broken, and people go back to drinking from the creek because there was no infrastructure put in place for follow-up for maintenance for repair" and said she hoped Donaldson's well-building effort included this infrastructure. While much of the reaction to Donaldson's video seemed to focus on how it shamed the Kenyan government, its creator anticipated a backlash, saying on X that he "knows I'm gonna get canceled because I uploaded a video helping people, and to be 100% clear, I don't care." Aspiring Kenyan politician Francis Gaitho criticized Donaldson's video, saying on X that it perpetuated the stereotype that Africa is "dependent on handouts...and philanthropic intervention," though Gaitho's comments attracted criticism of their own.

It has been just four years since her eponymous origin story made $1 billion, but already the character seems emblematic of a fading, increasingly decadent realm -- a late Roman emperor sighing as Vandals urinate in the Forum. It doesn't help that the current story (hurriedly trimmed?) is so haphazard.

A scene in which kittens eat up space travellers to the strains of Memory, from Cats, allows a rare moment of welcome surrender to absurdity, but for the most part the picture makes no virtue of its incoherence. Pity Samuel L Jackson. Back as Nick Fury, he now comes across as a dignified janitor in a permanently collapsing skyscraper. All involved deserve better.

One guy told a story that one of the locals in the village he was working in decided to start a baking business - he knew how to bake bread and saved money to start it up.
So his first day he goes down to the village square and people start buying the bread. After he's sold a few loaves one of the town elders notices him and takes the bread saying "there are hungry children that need this more then you"

However, I would also caution any so-called conservative who is going to rag on the government for not doing it, not to relieve them of any blame, if it turns out they've been grifting (which is what governments do), but to note that maybe it's not so good to always be looking to government for solutions.

It helps to be designed to be 90 minutes rather than suddenly cut down. Remember Poseidon, the remake of the Poseidon Adventure? They cut out something like an hour to make it shorter right before release, and it did nothing to improve the film.
Having just gotten through Joe Dante's filmography (longest film, Innerspace, just under 2 hours), I do appreciate a short film, but it does need to be designed to be short.

Foreign aid in general is a bad concept and it keeps the recipients poor. The right thing to do is what you said - do it yourself, keep the state out of it. But the state doesn't want to be kept out, the state wants to steal, and it's easier to steal from foreigners.

The whole "let's help the poor Africans" thing is an ongoing scam. My niece majored in international development, and was sent to Africa to teach the poor African women how to make some obvious doodad or another (I can't remember which). That's just what they need: some affluent white girl with no actual manufacturing skills coming over to show them how to do basic things. That's when it dawned on me. I'll bet that same group of African women has sat through many such sessions with well-meaning but clueless white girls intent on saving the world. The organization that brings them over gets paid, so why stop?

They apparently don't like clean water from wells enough to incentivize the construction of water infrastructure. Possible that free wells discourage it, but either way the economics aren't there.

Having spent 3 years in South America working on mostly fruitless projects I have to agree with her on that. The vast majority of projects I saw that had been built previously by NGOs and various foreign govt's had fallen apart due to lack of maintenance. Then put to use to store potatoes or scavenged for useful material. The experience opened my eyes to the true cause of third world poverty. (the people/culture)

After about 5 years, nothing works like it should and there's no money to replace it or upgrade it.

I'd say it has a much wider spread of income/development standards than much of Africa, but the same pathologies exist.
There was a German engineering construction firm that offered to build a water remediation project for the Ganges that only used mechanical/hydro systems that would have clean up most of the pollution. They eventually offered to pay for the whole construction. The Indian government said no, we need it to be dirty.

There's the Bonchie perspective over at RedState, where he makes the "tired of losing" argument and insinuates it's Trump's fault or McDaniel's fault or yada, yada, yada. All talking points of the GOPe. In other words, typical RedState.
Then there's the Marjorie Taylor Green perspective at TheGatewayPundit which - I believe - nails the reason as being Republican base voters abandoning the party. And she doesn't insinuate anything, she blames it totally on the members who don't fight and just talk big while giving the Leftist everything they want. She goes right after them on topics like abortion, showing their cowardice for not calling it what it is, BABY MURDER. She takes them to task also for writing stern letters but little else.
No matter what you think of MTG (like her, love her, hate her), she's the one who's right in this point-counterpoint comparrison.
