House Passes Aid Package for Israel In Face of Biden's Vow to Veto It
The Republican caucus was united, with the exception of Tom Massie, who routinely votes against aid to Israel, and Marjorie Taylor-Greene. They passed the $14.3 billion aid package with some Democrat support.
Biden is vowing to veto it, because, as he threatened at his prime time snarl, he will not allow any aid to Israel without funding his patrons in Ukraine. But it probably won't get to Biden. Because Biden has powerful allies in the Senate -- allies like Mitch McConnell, who also doesn't want to vote on one bill at a time. Incidentally, Johnson's House bill takes the $14.3 billion from Biden's "Inflation Reduction Act," so it's spending-neutral. I guess McConnell's against that, too. Biden also wants to spend $9 billion... on fucking GAZA aid.Of course. Of course. Incidentally, a "bearded female rabbi" got Biden to agree that Israel should enact a ceasefire with Hamas.
Ten Senate Republicans asked Majority Leader Chuck Schumer to reject President Joe Biden's request for $9 billion for Gaza humanitarian aid. It's simple: "As you know, sending aid to the Palestinians in Gaza is akin to funneling aid directly to Hamas." The $9 billion is part of Biden's plan for $106 billion for the border, Israel, and Hamas. It is common knowledge that any aid for Gaza goes to Hamas, which has controlled Gaza since 2007:Ukraine, of course, would get $61.4 billion, the majority of the request.
As we've seen in the past, this so-called "humanitarian aid" will likely be channeled through international organizations, including the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA). This is not speculation -- just last week, we saw reports that Hamas stole fuel and medical equipment from UNRWA, which the organization initially admitted but then subsequently denied. UNICEF medical kits were even found on the bodies of Hamas terrorists from the horrific October 7th attack. For over a decade, Hamas has stolen aid from UNRWA intended for the Palestinian people, and the organization has a well documented history of antisemitism. For example, UNRWA distributes educational materials that teach Palestinian children to hate Jews, and which glorify acts of terrorism.

Fair question. In the case of Ukraine, we never should have given them any money, and we shouldn't give those fuck knuckles another penny until we can account for those we've already pissed away. In the case of Israel, they're our ally and we should give them aid to the extent that we can support it.

An interesting thing happened near the start of the war - the Israelis couldn't get at the military commander of Hamas, Mohammed Deif, who doubtless is sitting in his command bunker under Al-Shifa Hospital, but they did manage to kill most of his family in an airstrike, including his brother.
The interesting thing was that Israel announced it.
I assumed that was a broad hint to Narsallah and the Hezbollah leadership - they may be sitting in their bunkers, but their extended families probably aren't.

Israel kept Iran's nuclear program in check, provided major intelligence boosts and Israel is also the reason we have functional missile defense (it has been a joint effort for a long time, with Israel pulling a lot of the weight). It's an actual military ally.

I don't recall Israel fighting alongside the US in any wars. And they're not working in the US's interest when it comes to Iran or missile defense or intelligence. If we get a small benefit from that, it's the least they can do. We do send them billions of dollars.
Same with Egypt. I'm sure you could point to times they have been helpful to us, but hardly seems worth the massive amount of money we send them.

The proxy war bit is the exact same selling point we get in the Ukraine war from those who support it. On the second bit, I really don't see what stake in Israel's existence we have geopolitically. The Cold War is over, and our own government has largely thrown in with Israel's chief enemy: Iran. Maybe there's a moral case for aid to Israel, but if Israel ceased to exist tomorrow, I think the world would mostly be the same (for everyone other than Israelis). Not that I want that result. The proxy war bit is the exact same selling point we get in the Ukraine war from those who support it. On the second bit, I really don't see what stake in Israel's existence we have geopolitically. The Cold War is over, and our own government has largely thrown in with Israel's chief enemy: Iran. Maybe there's a moral case for aid to Israel, but if Israel ceased to exist tomorrow, I think the world would mostly be the same (for everyone other than Israelis). Not that I want that result. Saudi Arabia is a key element(perhaps the most important part) of the American empire. Israel is a relevant piece against their rivals in Iran, and also shields Egypt(which while less important has the Suez canal).
Iran's chief enemy is not Israel or even Saudi Arabia, but the US. It could've been Russia, but history turned out in such a way that they chose to mark the US.
Ukraine is pretty much irrelevant.

Israel does support our wars. Most of that support is in kind rather than boots on the ground. We have gotten significantly more than a "small benefit" in military technology from the Israelis, primarily in missile defense and other defensive systems. Much of it was co-developed by both parties, but battle-tested and proven there. We have also gotten significant intelligence assistance. In terms of military investment, we probably get more actual effective return from Israel than any other country except possibly Britain or Japan.
We are also significant economic partners with lots of cross-investment and business operations. Israel is a real ally, not a paper ally - we do get something for our money.

Israel's chief enemy is more arguable, because their relationships in the region are situational. The enmity between them and Iran is not necessarily any more enduring than the one between them and the Arabs was. Their goals don't particularly conflict with most of the players in the region. They are aligned with the US and so enemies with Iran, but if they aligned with Russia that might no longer be the case(and instead go back to being against Egypt and Saudi Arabia).

Israel kept Iran's nuclear program in check, provided major intelligence boosts and Israel is also the reason we have functional missile defense (it has been a joint effort for a long time, with Israel pulling a lot of the weight). It's an actual military ally.

The Middle East is a stew of tribal hostilities but one organizing principle since the beginning of time is hatred of Jews by virtually everyone else in the region. It only got worse after Israel was created. If we sent troops into this fight the Middle East would explode against Israel. As of now Israel is only fighting Hamas.
There's a reason Iran calls Israel Little Satan the US Big Satan and calls for both our destruction on a daily basis.

Ukraine is only useful as a beachhead to invade Russia's core territories, which is as far as I know, not something we're interested in doing. Pushing Russia towards China instead of triangulating is also stupid.
The US position in the Middle East is how we support the US dollar. Before dismantling that position, it makes sense to dismantle the positions in Europe or Asia as they are more expendable.

Absolutely. It will *never* happen with the current government - they want that open border more than perhaps anything else. We need not just a border wall, but comprehensive border and alien control. A wall. Enforce the border with violence. Punish any city or state with "sanctuary" policies with both a direct elimination of any and all federal assistance in anything until it stops and prosecution of those who maintain those policies. Deport, rapidly, everyone here illegally we can put our hands on. Tax remittances back to Latin America at punitive rates.
All of that is - and should remain - independent of Israel, Ukraine or anything else. But it isn't, because the government wants to hold the border hostage* to get lots of money for an ally at war (Israel) and a non-ally at war that is operating a graft machine they want to skim (Ukraine).
* But only sort of. In reality, they will get their bill and do nothing about the border.

There's been those interested in scavenging from Russia since the breakup of the USSR, but the Pentagon's vision of the US's position has not included doing so and still does not include doing so in recent years to the best of my knowledge. Nor has there been an emerging consensus to attempt such a thing within the ruling class.

Well this comes to mind because it's in the news, but when looked at as a whole, it can come off as specifically questioning aid to Israel while we have 35k troops in Germany. Why so many troops in Germany? Who are we defending against anymore there?
We have for that matter only a few hundred troops in Poland, so it's not even like we're defending against the Russians.

Right, so you're talking about dismantling the empire as a whole. Which is certainly a defensible position and one I lean towards(I think many, including Trump see it as inevitable), but when any particular part of it gets discussed, usually people assume that a person is only talking about that part, in this case Israel. So an assumption is frequently made that it is a case being made against that country in particular.
The arguments for general dismantlement and a particular withdrawal differ because the assumed goals are different.

It's complicated because ours is a trade empire rather than a direct empire, and those are always complicated. Sometimes we get something directly in return (Israel is an example of that - we get a lot of military technology assistance and the alliance secures their high tech and biotech sectors (at the moment - it changes over time) that are mutually beneficial), but usually we don't. What we get in return is the thing most needed for consistent, long term trade: stability. At least in theory. Often, we get nothing or less than nothing in return.

The way I see it, the U.S. of A. has had enough wars in the past 20 year to last them the rest of the century. Ideally, it would be like cold turkeying an addict.
Cut them off completely, let the withdrawal symptoms hurt for a while. No more wars, anywhere. Bring all troops home. Fire 90% of the starry officers.
Then maybe.... maybe after they've been abstinent from all foreign adventures for a few decades, we might let them have a say in whatever else is happening in the rest of the world.

It's easy enough, if you don't assume everyone who disagrees with you on this simply must be an anti-semite even when their specific words betray no hint of anti-semitism. The problem here is more in the listener's ears than the speaker's words. In the same way that the left is permeated by irrational hatred of all things Jewish, there's a fairly irrational exuberance on the right for Israel. A couple of posters in the thread, for example, cite the Bible as their reason for supporting Israel. I accept their sincerity, but there's no way to have a rational debate with people who think God compels us to support this aid package. That's not meant as any sort of harsh criticism. I just think a lot of posters become much more heated/emotional when Israel is concerned than with other countries. No one here would say "wow, you must really hate blacks" if someone shit on aid for Africa.

The opposition to aid position being anti-Semitic tends to be more easily assumed thanks to that being a very big and public reason to oppose the aid that we're seeing from the Left right now. If the listener is prejudiced to assume the position is held due to anti-Semitic reasons, it is due to it being so common presently.

So Afghanistan, much like most of the Middle East, is complicated in its own way. The Taliban is really sort of a regional tribal federation, and they mostly aren't ISIS types with grand and international ambitions. Getting favorable relations with the most local bigwigs and tolerance from the rest on paper should've been doable.
Vietnam, though nominally communist, is US aligned today. Geopolitics can be weird.
