Daily Tech News 1 November 2023

Top Story

  • Seems to be a loose connection inside my laptop. That's why the problem is intermittent.

It can probably be fixed, I think I'll just turn it into a Linux server and stick it on a shelf, and take the other laptop (better screen and CPU but 16GB of soldered RAM) and use that as my Windows system.

  • The Day of the 4TB SSDs: Call of Duty Modern Warfare III requires 213GB of disk space. (Tom's Hardware)

I have - I think I still have it - a Sun Ultra 5 workstation with two 14GB disk drives.

That used to be a lot. Today that much storage would cost about a dollar.

Tech News

  • An AI-powered smoothie shop opened in San Francisco in September. Why is it closed already. (The Guardian)

Well, one, San Francisco, and two, as even the Guardian noticed, their customers seem to be AI-powered as well.

  • If Black 2.0 and Black 3.0 just weren't Black enough for you, Black 4.0 is now available. (Culture Hustle)

    These are real things.

Vantablack was invented in 2014 as a new pigment that absorbs approximately 99.965% of visible light (and ultraviolet and infrared as well). It's very striking, because light basically just disappears. It's not like the usual glossy or even matte black surface, it looks like someone cut a hole in the Universe.

And then the inventors sold the exclusive rights to use it in artworks to Anish Kapoor.

So another company came along and created even blacker blacks - 2.0, 3.0, and now 4.0 - which are available for sale to everybody in the world - except Anish Kapoor.

  • Elon Musk's plans to make X the "everything app". (The Verge)

It's an interesting read and provides some justification for the exorbitant price he paid for Twitter, though it's not clear how much of this he had in mind at the time and how much is post-facto rationalisation.

Some of the things mentioned, like end-to-end encryption, are great ideas that need to be more widely adopted (and will piss off the UK government no end).

Other things, like using Twitter to make payments, I'm a lot less keen on.

I do not want an "everything" app. I want a bunch of entirely independent, competing apps that each do one thing well, and that I can replace easily if they stop doing that thing well.

  • WeWork looks set to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. (Tech Crunch)

I keep forgetting that WeWork isn't already bankrupt. It's share price is down approximately 99.965% from its peak five years ago, with the company's valuation falling from $47 billion to $121 million.

A lot of that was bad timing, launching a huge office management company just before the Wuhan Bat Flu Death Plague locked everyone in their homes for three years, though a lot of it was that the company was run by idiots.

I'm sure somebody will miss them.

  • Sam Bankman-Fraud didn't ask where the $8 billion went. (The Verge)

Maybe it's just me, but that would seem to be an important question, somewhere between "where are my pants" and "why has my heart stopped beating".

The Return of the Queen

Haachama is back.

When I first got into Hololive, the English branch hadn't been announced yet, so a lot of what I watched was Kiryu Coco, who is Japanese-American and speaks fluent English, and Haachama, who was completing her final year of high school here in Australia at the time (she was just 16 when she joined the company) and speaks adorable English.

Anyway, she was laid low earlier this year by a double whammy of respiratory viruses that put her in the hospital, but she's better now and she returns in about three hours.

Spiders everywhere quiver in fear.

Disclaimer: Haachama-chama!

24 8 I watched the video, what the heck does "Haachama-chama!" mean?

Her official name in Hololive is Akai Haato, which translates to Red Heart. (Which is also the name of her first original song.)

Since she was one of the first talents to join the company, newer members would call her Haato-san to show respect. But since she was also the youngest person in the company by a good margin - a teenager when most of her colleagues were in their mid-to-late twenties - that made her uncomfortable.

So she made up the nickname Haachama, which is a child's way of saying Haato-chan, which is much less formal.

Haachama-chama is her way of announcing herself at the start of a stream.

31 1996(ish) My computer set up:

14" CRT monitor
IBM M series keyboard
1 GB hard drive
16 megs of ram
I cannot remember the video card, but the processor was like a Pentium 2?

Pretty much the keyboard is the only thing that has stayed the same. I had an apartment fire in 2002. The computer was trashed from water. The keyboard still worked fine even though it had all the water and a ton of ash dumped on it. It lost some key covers, so I asked my aunt at UofL ucs to hunt me down a 'new' M keyboard (the one I still use today.) I think the original keyboard was built in 87. The 'new' one is '91, I think.

I'd suspect that one reason why this AI-powered smoothie shop didn't have many (or any) customers was the $10 price mentioned in the original article. Their competitor was charging $7.50 (still about $5 too much) for the same thing. A 33% surcharge just you could say, "My smoothie was made by artificial intelligence!" is probably a bridge too far even for SF people and CA people generally.

You could get a renewed unlocked iPhone 8 off of Amazon for about 128 dollars, you could get a renewed unlocked iPhone 11 for about 274 dollars.

These phones will be more than capable, you do not need to spend 1000 bucks on an iPhone.

92 Of course, when Paul uses the word " saints " which is used about 11 times or so in scripture it means believers in Jesus. My TLM parish in the big city has a huge (it grew exponentially during Covid) All Hallows Eve party each year. The teens help host it by running the games, serving refreshments and constructing and manning the special "Saint _____" rooms, which highlight special saints each year.

The younger kids wear Saint costumes, play games and collect treats, many of which come with a note asking for prayers for the departed of the giver's family on All Souls' (Nov. 2)

The only gore involved is some of the older boys getting creative with a Martyr saint.

Looking forward to the pics from my friends.

176 P-shaw. The year was 1992, I think...

I had an IBM PS-2 that came with two new fangled 3.5" disk drives standard.

Went to the local PC shop looking to add a newer still "hard drive".

They had one - 20MB. They wanted $600 for it.

A 4TB SSD would cost $120K for that kind of price. LOLOL

Georgia was the masterstroke in the 2020 election.

Stacey Abrams never conceded, so if the (R) governor or the state acknowledges any fraud then she's got a case and it's off to the races.

I have a name like that. At some point, maybe college age, everyone seemed to just shorten it, like Billy or Tommy becoming Bill and Tom.

But now that I'm entering my second childhood, people seem to like the little boy diminutive again. I don't fight it.

Gonna cancel mail while you're gone?
Got to compare notes with a neighbor last night, who had stuff stolen from his mailbox, too. We lost insurance bill, electric bill, and box of microwave popcorn. He lost a drivers license.

Pisses me off the neighbors who call in the landscapers and not a one looks American. I cut my own grass. I've always cut my own grass. Locking mailboxes are really pricey but I guess I gotta do it.

192 Morning peeps.

Senator Reed is a lying sack of crap. "May" being the operative word in his statement because he really has no idea but feels the need to take a swipe at Tuberville. Which he felt was more important than what "may" have actually happened to the guy.

This.

Imagine if we had even 10, much less 100, representatives willing to stand up and risk their future investment fortunes do what Tuberville and Gaetz have done in the hopes of helping the children and grandchildren of the nation.

We could get this thing turned around. But alas...

195 Look closely at this accusation against Tuberville - he put a hold on these promotions because of Bidens changed radical pro-abortion policy. (They can still be approved by roll call vote, if Schumer wanted) so what do Dems and MFM say? "Ohmigod, Tuberville gave the marine commandant a heart attack!!" It's worse than just stupid, it is blood libel, just like the Muslims do to Jews.

196 The last post from a commentator on "Legal Insurrection" about the young man from Cornell who posted the threats said he had missed a couple of semesters because he was depressed. I am not a psychiatrist, of course, but I'm quite familiar with clinical depression and it generally does not lead to violence. You can get suicidal, of course. So, I'm guessing that this young man might have been schizophrenic which can lead to violence if not treated and also bizarre thought, or it may mean he was having side effects from anti depressents.

Or he may "just" be some violent anti Semite.

198 Musk's Twitter plans are post-facto. My belief in this is the following:

Musk originally suggested $44 billion. He had a change of heart - remember him trying to work the cost down with the thing about how many users are actually robots? But then the threat of a huge penalty for not going through with the deal was noted.

You should remember that Musk and Twitter, a short bit later, dropped the robot talk and he went through with the full price of $44 billion. Musk knows he overspent for it; he was trying to get out of it or it knocked down, but apparently he didn't have a leg to stand on.

So what happens when you pay an obscene amount for what is just a messaging app? Pay that amount even after the hangover has hit, like a shotgun wedding?

It's now your personal toy.

That's what is going on with "X". Elon Musk had second thoughts on a costly mistake, but had to go through with it. And if a large chunk of his fortune was going to those gobs, he's going to try and enjoy every dollar of that $44 billion.

Also - hard to believe it's been a whole year since that sale.

199 Fen,

He's probably never been properly diagnosed. People like to think a kid has "depression" because it's much less serious as schizophrenia. I believe it was his parents that said he was depressed. I doubt if he has been properly diagnosed or even on medication because of the shame factor.

Now that he outed himself as a loon he has a chance to get on some meds that will help him, hopefully.
